This is one of our annual fun events We plan to have races in the morning. While we are doing this the

chicken pieces will be cooking beautifully and the salads will be dressing nicely. Then we can relax and eat at about 2pm!

At Langham Farm from 11am Cost £5 adults, £4 young people. We set up the club marquee so we can shelter from any rain but do bring your umbrellas and wellie boots because the last two years have been wet! Games in the morning will be in kayaks and canoes , so also bring your paddling stuff and a towel as you might well get wet! This event is suitable for all, and family members are particularly welcome. But you must let Pam know you are coming so we can cater for you.

Cardington Slalom 15/16th June By Sam Nicol

Four club paddlers competed at Car-dington Slalom: Will Jones in K1 divi-sion 3, and in division 2 were Andy Lyall, John Kent and Ben Nicol. Ben also competed in C1 division 2.

The course at Cardington is a concrete culvert fed by the River Ouse. The course is tight, technical and shallow demanding a high level of concentra-tion to avoid pinning and/or beaching.

On Saturday, despite blustery weather conditions and heavy rain which saw the support crew retreat to vehicles for large umbrellas and waterproofs, Team Frome posted good results with close competition between good friends and rivals John and Andy.

Andy travelled home to Frome on Sat-urday evening leaving John, Will and Ben to compete on a windy but mostly dry Sunday. With a new course to master Team Frome's performance improved and after first runs John Kent lay in 18th with a clear run, Ben Nicol lay in 1st for both K1 and C1 and in division 3 Will Jones lay 8th. The tension rose for second runs, John Kent posted another clear run, 0.8 second quicker. Ben was clear also in both K1 and C1 runs and Will posted a 3 second improvement in his K1 run.

Ben held on to his first place in K1 but was beaten by 0.4 second into second place in C1. John's time maintained a mid table place and with an improved second run, Will came fourth in Divi-sion 3 missing out on third place by 0.1 second!

Shepperton Div 3/4 Slalom Saturday 22/6/13

Weather: Dry

Temperature: 17ºC

Attendance: Approximately 50 Enjoyment factor: High

Those attending Alex Hulin, Jamie Easton, Keiron Clark, John Kent and Andrew Lyall.

Shepperton is a weir slalom for those

unfamiliar with this one, but as it is aimed at beginners there was little water today apart from flow over one of the side sluices. There was still enough water to make it interesting - so carry on reading.

We arrived at 10am and unofficial

practice was starting. Our three boys were keen to get on the water as soon as possible with first runs sched-uled for 12 noon.

There were 20 gates to be negotiated and Div 4 could avoid gates 12 and 13

which were in the main flow of wa-ter by the side sluice.

Within the first 10 minutes of practice Frome Canoe Club was showing class with a roll from Keiran at gate 18. This was followed 5 minutes later with Jamie getting a bit close to the large

rock in the main flow and getting pinned on it sideways. The water was

running quickly over him and the boat, but to his credit he seemed very relaxed about the situation. After an-other minute it became clear that he wasn't going to be released without some action on his part. As I was

FCC shows class with a roll and a pinning

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

standing on the bank by the rock he asked me 'Do you think I should get out?' I answered that 'It would be a

good idea' and off came the spray

deck and out he came swimming down the river. Three more copper nose points to his name.

A few other competitors managed to pull his boat off the rock and it was undamaged so he got back in the boat and carried on with his practice.

Alex managed to avoid any problems

all day and had a much improved sec-ond run. After prize giving we were all ready to depart at 6pm and home by 8pm. Thank you John for taking us all again.

Results Keiron - 3rd (out of 18) in Div 4 K1 and promoted to Div 3.

Alex - 8th (out of 8) in Div 4

Jamie - 18th (out of 21) in Div 3

Andrew & John - 3rd (out of 3) in C2 Div3.

Although, Andrew and John were 3rd, their time was good enough to receive 476 points. The winner only received 500 points.

In summary a very relaxing day with some valuable experience gained by

the boys on their first moving water

slalom.

Andrew Lyall Ed - Congratulations to Keiran on his promotion. We mustn’t forget those copper noseclip points - one for the roll and 3 to Jamie for his swim!

Go Canoeing Taster Day

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

22nd June: we opened the club to members of the public and put on a taster day.

A big THANK YOU to Gine, Kyra, Ben L, George, Kieran, Charlie, Chris, Su, Josie, Gareth, Stu and Rich. Ben’s parents came to pick him up at the end and got roped in with the tidying up too!

The windy cool weather probably put many people off but we saw a steady stream through the day, with 50 giving it a go!

The feedback on the forms was fasci-nating: In the ‘what did you like least’ section there was ‘aching arms’ and ‘getting wet’. But an unexpected one - ‘wanted to go further downstream’. So at least we know that our young people in charge of the watery part of the day (Kyra, George, Gine, Kieran and Ben L) did what they were supposed to and kept everyone away from the weir! Well that’s not entirely true is it George? George got one of them teetering on the edge of the

weir. He said he was in control and that it was safe.

The ‘What did you enjoy most’ ques-tion elicited the expected comments like ‘I enjoyed it all’, ‘good fun’, ‘discovering a new sport’. But how about this – ‘The wind on the water just made it more fun’.

And finally ‘Great that a 7 year old could have a taster session – good in-structing too’

Yes we did have good and willing in-structors. Thank you everyone who helped.

Ed: We are sorry Tracy, that the kit room is not quite in the organised state that you left it the Wednesday before!

Maya Edwards, Amelia Edwards, Oliver Phelan, Jude Garrett, Konnor Gulliver, and Kallum Gulliver. Thank you Janine and Jonathan, the coaches who put the young people through the paces!

Number crunching - a slalom analysis by Andrew Lyall

After our great results at Langham Farm slalom I wondered how we compared to our club in 1983. Do we have more people doing slalom now? The figures below tell the story:

Frome Canoe Club is now a very successful club with a large number of male and female slalom paddlers. There is an increase of 150% compared to 1983.

Ed: Thank you for these stats Andrew. And of course we now have a Div 1 paddler after Cardington. Well done Ben! And Will Jones got promoted to Div 2 at Ogmore this weekend! But your figures do show a dramatic increase in uptake by ladies and girls which reflects the encouragement the club gives to our female paddlers in what is still a male dominated sport! If anyone in the club is interested in slalom, do please come along and give it a go. Ben Nicol and Jack Overhill are there every Wednesday at 7pm and will start you off!

£500, give or take the odd pound! (we are still waiting for some bills to be settled) but the provisional figure for 2013 is £502. A very big thank you to everyone who made cakes for sale in the cook tent at Langham Farm slalom. We couldn't possibly manage to earn as much money as this without your donations. So thank you. And a special mention for the people who manned (or womaned) the tent: Chloe, Tracy, Angie, Kath, Vicky, Sarah and our one and only chef extraordinaire - Gareth! Next year’s dates are 7/8th June!

Email answers by 15th July to [email protected]. First correct answer out of the hat wins a great big choccie bar!
