Life after School Even if you’re not quite sure where you want to go with your life,we are certain we have the best range of A Levels that will put you on the platform to success.

Here at Queen Alexandra, you will learn in a fully supportiveacademic environment where our number one priority is you. You can pick a range of subjects that you enjoy and our Student Advisors are on hand to ensure that your courses of choice fit inwith your career aspirations.

Students (GCSE results depending) typically choose four A Level subjects to study in their first year (AS). Then to ensure students are fully supported and achieve to the best of their ability in the year leading to employment or higher education, students then continue with three A2 subjects.

One-to-One SupportSimilar to a form group at school, you will be allocated to a tutorial group where you will have a Pastoral Tutor. Tutorial groups are a timetabled part of your time at Queen Alexandra where you can gain one-to-one support from your Pastoral Tutor to ensure you keep on track. Our tutors have knowledge and experience to offer whilst encouraging students to be self-motivated and independent.

From the North East Sports Academy (NESA) to our new ‘Move It’ programme, charity activities and beyond, at Queen Alexandra we believe the key to a successful future is by getting involved.

Exchanges & Field TripsAt Queen Alexandra we believe in a combined approach to learning to put the skills you learn into practice with regular industry and university trips. Trips to Poland for History students, Blencathra for Geography students and the House of Commons for Sociology students, are just a handful of many exciting trips across various departments.

Debating Events & University VisitsDebating events are not only educational but can be excellent fun too! Across the year Queen Alexandra receives regular visits from local and national MPs, providing students with fantastic opportunities to not only get involved with professional and topical discussions, but also gainkey skills that make students more employable and attractive to universities.

Taking the next step to Higher Education is made easier with our regular visits to universities. With close connections to several universities and Higher Education providers, students truly are in the best place to learn about their options, UCAS and career prospects.

Supporting Local CharitiesAt Queen Alexandra we are proud supporters of charities and raise funds for a different causeevery year. Each academic year sees students vote for their charity of choice, and 2012-13 saw Queen Alexandra raise vital funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The nominated charity for 2013-14 is the North East Autism Society. Across the year the College hosts several fundraising events that students and members of the community can take part in.

North EastSports Academy (NESA)

One of the many advantages of studying at Queen Alexandra is that you become instantly enrolled into the North East Sports Academy (NESA).NESA provides all students with up to ten hours of free professional sports coaching per week across a wide range of sports such as basketball and football. With official links to the Newcastle Eagles Basketball Team and Newcastle United Women’s Football Club, students are in the best place to make top connections with key players in the world of sport.

As well as free coaching, students get access to the gym, strength and conditioning support, physio support and subsidised sports kits.

A number of our students who have combined their studies with a NESA sports programme have gone onto enjoy both academic success and sporting glory. Ross Wilson, a recent Queen Alexandra student gained a scholarship in the USA to continue his basketball career.

Move it! Fun and FitAre you looking for a new way to lose weight or get fit? Something that’sfun and you can get into with your mates? Then look no further, ‘Move It!’is for you! Move It! Is the new programme of activities organised by NESA and our new College Sport Maker, Sarah Bennett. The programme aims to offer you the opportunity to take part in activities at college during your free time. Some of the activities on offer to name but a few are:

Counselling & Welfare Service

We know that tackling an issue either in or outside college can be tough, whichis why we offer a free counselling service for our students. An issue can hold youback from reaching your full potential both academically and through life, so coming to see a counsellor is an effective way for students to discuss any issues in a safe environment. This service is available for all of our students, and our dedicatedStudent Welfare Co-ordinator is available for confidential discussions.

Student Support & Careers Guidance

When it comes to the next step in your career, we’ve got people on hand tooffer advice and we have close links with local agencies, business and industryambassadors, as well as regional and national universities. Our team of dedicated Student Advisors are there to help with any questions or concerns you may haveas well as offering careers guidance to ensure that you are well informed aboutyour future and how to get there.

The College’s Gateway and School Liaison teams have been accredited with the Matrix standard which recognises excellence in delivering information, advice and guidance on learning and work.

Financial Support

At Queen Alexandra we don’t want the costs of studying to hold our students back, which is why we offer a generous bursary of up to £1,200 for full-time learners. The QAMA (Queen Alex Maintenance Award) through Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College was created to help students facing financial obstacles and aims to help though funding for travel, subsistence, trips and costs of study such as books.

If you have an eye for detail and a passion for all things creative then this is the course for you. From shading to enhancing and honing technical skills, you will become equipped with advanced artistic qualities across many art formats. Students create a portfolio of art pieces across areas such as drawing, painting, mixed-media, sculpture, land art and printmaking. You will study key artists as well as developing your individual style and become familiar with explaining the inspiration and motivation behindyour work.

Entry Requirements5 GCSEs Grade A* to C plus a portfolio of work.

Study UnitsAS - Students will use a wide range of drawing, painting and printing techniques.A2 - Students produce a written and illustrated personal investigation on a Fine Art related topic of their choice.

AssessmentAS - Unit 1: Coursework (worth 60% of the AS grade). Unit 2: Externally set examination (worth 40% of the AS grade), ending with an eight hour exam split over two weeks to complete a final piece.A2 - Unit 3: Coursework (worth 30% of the A2 grade), practical work and a written study.Unit 4: Externally set examination (worth 20% of the A2 grade), ending with a 12 hour exam split over two weeks to complete a final piece.

The world of Biology is an exciting and unique subject allowing you to study both genetics and ecology along with the causes and treatment of disease and the fundamental science that explains all living systems. You’ll study a wide range of fascinating topics from molecular biology and genetic engineering through to ecosystems.

You will also develop your ability to understand how science works. You will plan and carry out experiments and develop your skills in interpreting data in the form of graphs and tables. If you have an interest in science and are thinking about going into a scientific or medical profession, A Level Biology is a great place to start.

Entry Requirements5 GCSEs A* to C including a Grade B in Biology and Grade B in Maths.

The emphasis is on you developing your own thoughts and critical views, as well as working on a creative project of your own with a digital storyboard or an extended step outline as part of your practical assessment.

By studying Media at AS and A2, you will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the media surrounding us, how it is put together and the impact it has on us and our everyday lives.

As part of the course you will research the codes and conventions of magazine design and use this research to inform your own production of a magazine including covers and inside spreads. The Media course will broaden your skills in studio photography, graphic design in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign as well as your journalism skills.

You will also gain analytical skills as you analyse media texts, documentaries, music videos, adverts and many more, gaining an insight into how the text has been put together and how the audience may respond to it. You will also explore how the media portrays various groups in society and understand more about the influence of the media.

You’ll visit Northumbria University and the University of Sunderland on study trips and the Sixth Form College has close links with the Tyneside Cinema.

Media Studies

The A level in Photography is intended to introduce students to a range of approaches to the subject, both contemporary and traditional. Students gain experience of the darkroom and black and white film based photography as well as exploring digital technology and digital imaging.

The aim is also to give students experience of the breadth ofthe subject as it is today so they will look at portraiture, documentary, narrative imagery, found photography, fashion photography, surrealism, experimental and abstract photography and much more.

You will use SLR’s, compact cameras, manual ‘film’ SLR cameras, studio flash and darkrooms to investigate digital and chemical photography. You will also be introduced to Photoshop anddigital imaging.

Entry Requirements5 GCSEs Grade A* to C and a portfolio of work.

Study UnitsAS - Themed project and an externally set assignment.A2 - Independently selected practical work and written studyand an externally set assignment and 12 hour practical.

AssessmentAS - Unit 1: Coursework (worth 60% of the AS grade). Unit 2: Externally set examination (worth 40% of the AS grade), ending with an eight hour exam split over two weeks to complete a final piece.A2 - Unit 3: Coursework (worth 30% of the A2 grade), practical work and a written study of 1500 - 3000 words. If you have a genuine interest in Sport, studying Physical Education at AS and A2 Level will take you through everythingfrom the active elements of sport and how the body works.You will learn about Anatomy & Physiology including: theskeletal, muscular, cardio-vascular and respiratory systems,and basic biomechanics.

You will study these topics in relation to performance, learninghow these systems can all be improved/trained. Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour. You will look at different explanations for the way in which humans (and non-humans) behave. You will also spend time analysing evidence and theories and comparing research in order to be able to reach conclusions about a variety of topics including mental illness and relationships.

You’ll look at how ideas and theories in each area of Psychology have developed, learn how to critically analyse evidence, and undertake some practical research. During your studies, you will have the chance to visit university psychology faculties, outside speakers will also visit the College to offer insight into particular areas of the subject. Psychology is an excellent basis for further study in the area of Psychology, or as a useful tool in many areas of study and employment including the Police, Nursing or Business Management.

Sociology is a contemporary subject, which is very much connected to the present. It explains the way in which society works and how individuals live together and co-operate through social institutions such as the education system, the family, religious institutions and the law. Sociology examines the development of society and the theories of those who have observed it, such as Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim.

Field trips include: visiting a Hindu temple, mosque and Church of Scientology in Edinburgh and a visit to Manchester Metropolitan University for a lecture on gangs.

Studying Sociology allows you to examine current affairs, how society works and the people within it. Field trips include a visit to the Hindu Temple in Newcastle. A variety of outside speakers will be invited to give talks to classes throughout the course.

A Level Spanish is open to those who have previously studied Spanish at GCSE. Studying a language at AS or A Level at Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College will help you to communicate at a higher level in the chosen language. You will also develop a deeper understanding of the countries and communities across the world where Spanish is spoken. During your A Level studies you’ll recap what you learnt in GCSE Spanish, learn new grammar, phrases and expressions.

You’ll learn plenty of new vocabulary, gain confidence in speaking and improve your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. Whether you want to use a modern foreign language for work, for further study, or for leisure, an A Level language course will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge.

Use of Maths is an AS Level Maths qualification, which is not quite as difficult as AS Level Maths. This programme is suitable for students who do not intend to be specialist Mathematicians but who want to learn how to applyadvanced Mathematics and Statistics in real and interesting contexts.

AS Use of Maths is designed to support courses that have a mathematical content, such as Sciences.

The Statistics module also supports students studying humanities subjects such as Sociology and Psychology.

By BusLocal bus routes 306, 317 and 442 stop outside the Sixth Form College. If you come from outside the region you can travel to North Shields using National Express coaches.

By Rail/MetroThe Metro rail system has a station in North Shields. The route is direct via Monument. If you are travelling on the national rail network you should arrive at Newcastle Central station and take a Metro to North Shields from there.
