The 2012-13 academic year was one for the record books as K-State continues to set a national standard for excellence both on the field and in the classroom. Student-

athletes scored record-high marks across the board in the latest NCAA APR ratings, while a total of236 earned recognition to the Spring Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and 73 student-athletesearned degrees last spring.

Our student-athletes also continue to turn in championship athletic performances as evidenced bythe fact that K-State became just the second Big 12 school and fourth BCS program since 1998 towin conference championships in football, men’s basketball and baseball in the same year. Additional highlights from 2012-13, also known as “The Year of the Wildcat,” included:

Now celebrating 50 years of support of K-State student-athletes,the Mike Ahearn Scholarship Fund, now officially known as theAhearn Fund, was founded in 1964 with the primary objective ofraising money from the private sector to assist with rising costs.

While fully-funding K-State’s scholarship commitment is the firstobjective, the Ahearn Fund has evolved into something much

more; an Excellence Fund to support a world-class student-athlete experience, including academic supportservices, equipment, sports medicine, strength andconditioning, and travel; as well as an advantage in

supporting facility enhancements, attracting and retaining outstanding head and assistant coaches, and supporting

Under the direction of athletics director John Currie, K-State Athletics enjoyed one of its greatestall-around athletics seasons in its long history in 2012-13. The school

became just the second in Big 12 history and the fourth since the start ofthe Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 1998 to win conference titles infootball, men’s basketball and baseball in the same academic year, joining Stanford (1999-2000), Texas (2005-06) and Louisville (2012-13).

The historic ride began in the Fall as coach Bill Snyder led the footballteam to an 11-win season and No. 1 BCS ranking en route to a berth in

the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The volleyball team advanced to the NCAATournament for the ninth time under coach Suzie Fritz, while LauraGalvan posted a school-record time at the NCAA Cross CountryChampionships. Both basketball teams went to the postseasonwith the men’s team advancing to the NCAA Tournament for thefourth straight season. Led by Olympian Erik Kynard, the track

and field team had 10 athletes earn All-America distinction andfive win individual Big 12 titles, while Petra Niedermayerovaset school records for wins en route to advancing to the round

of 16 in singles and double play at the NCAA Championships.Equestrian earned its third Reserve National Championship in

the past four years with four earning All-America honors. Baseballcapped the year off

by setting schoolrecords for wins (45)and league wins(16) en route to itsfirst NCAA Regionaltitle and trip to theSuper Regionals.

its 14th overall NCAA Tournament and ninth under the

direction of 12th-year head coach SUzIE FRITz in 2012.

The squad was also one of just two Big 12 schools to

>>K-STATE’S men’s basketball team has won 20 or more games

for seven straight years. Led by first-year coach Bruce Weber,

the ‘Cats won their first league title since 1977 and advanced

to the NCAA Tournament. Weber was named Big 12 Coach of

the Year and was a finalist for National Coach of the Year.

>>K-STATE’s rowing team enjoyed a successful 2012-13

campaign, as the Wildcats won two gold medals

(2nd Varsity 8 and Varsity 4) and a bronze (1st Varsity 8)

at the SIRAs Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

The team won its third Sunflower Showdown in a row.

The National Leadership Circle (NLC) of the Ahearn Fund is a comprehensive program forKansas State’s top level of annual donors to athletics. In appreciation for their annual impact onthe pursuit of athletic and academic excellence, NLC members are recognized with Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond levels and receive special benefits. In 2013, we are pleased to havenearly 400 members representing 19 states. NLC members accounted for 54 percent of the totalgiving to the Ahearn Fund this past year. This level of commitment from National Leadership

Circle members helps to fund scholarships for student-

athletes, sports medicine, academic support, and

Why is it important that I makemy pledge and send in at least25 percent of my contributionby March 3?

Meeting the March 3 deadline helps the staffprovide the best possible customer service,helps ensure fairness and enables the staff todeliver the fiscal accountability you deserve. Byindicating your intent to renew your AhearnFund membership by March 3 you guaranteeretention of your football seating and parkinglocation, provided you meet the minimum con-tribution level for the seating and parking area,renew your tickets and pay the balance of yourpledge by June 16. March 3 is also the datewhich we will calculate priority points for foot-ball seating and parking upgrades.

Additionally, having pledges in by March 3helps the department accurately project revenues, which assists with the budgetingprocess and is our commitment to being fiscally responsible in the coming year. Thebudget process begins in March with a completed budget published in late June.

Why is my total gift due by June 16?

To maintain the department’s goal for fiscal

responsibility and accountability; it is important that it can accurately project revenue for not only for planning but also forbudgeting purposes. The budget process begins in March each year and the books areclosed on June 30.

Once the fiscal year ends in June, an annual report detailing how your gifts were utilizedwill be prepared and distributed to all AhearnFund members. Of course, you may completeyour pledge in full at any time prior to the June16 deadline.

What happens if I don’t makemy pledge by March 3? Or mytotal gift by June 16?

It is important to meet deadlines established inthis membership guide to ensure that you retain your current seats and parking. If youmiss these deadlines your seats and parkingwill be placed on our open seating/parking listand if there is a request that matches any openseats we will move those who have met thedeadline into the open seats and/or parking.This is critical to ensuring fair treatment forAhearn members and season ticket holdersand giving those members who meet eachdeadline the opportunity to improve their seatsand/or parking.

What are the advantages to paying my gift by March 3?

Points are credited only as dollars are received.Completing your gift by March 3 means thatyou will get priority point credit for the entireamount of the gift, which could improve yourseats and/or parking. Points will be calculatedon March 3 and those totals will be used forfootball seating and parking upgrades. Pointscalculated on June 16 will be used for men’sand women’s basketball requests.

Can I pay my Ahearn Fund gift in installments?

Yes, you can make monthly payments towardyour Ahearn Fund pledge. Equal monthly payments can be charged to your credit cardon the date you specify. An important thing tonote if you are setting up a monthly paymentschedule for the first time, please make surethat the portion of the donation related to priority seating is 25% and paid by March 3 andthe balance is paid by June 16. We will work toaccommodate your requests in regards to yourpayment schedules. Please call the AhearnFund to personally discuss your options.

Can I join the Ahearn Fund if Idon’t have season tickets?

Yes, the Ahearn Fund is K-State’s National Fundfor Student-Athlete Excellence. Being anAhearn member, at any level, helps the department to achieve the vision of being amodel intercollegiate athletics program. Annual gifts to the Fund are the lifeblood ofKansas State Athletics. Those dollars allow thedepartment to provide a world-class student-athlete experience, maintain and provide on-going facility upgrades, attract and retain greatcoaches and enable a national recruiting reach.At the same time we pledge to operate in a fiscally responsible and transparent manner.
