O n behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff of Merrimack Repertory Theatre, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to MRT’s donors, subscribers and patrons. The 2013-14 Season contained

a strong mix of contemporary plays and modern classics. MRT began the season with the Tony Award-winning play God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton, and ended with The Reduced Shakespeare Company® in The Complete History of Comedy (abridged). In between we traveled to Steubenville, Ohio in 1967, a modern day bar in Philadelphia, were serenaded by Bessie Smith in a buffet flat, traveled to a converted train car in England, and fell in love with Sally Talley and Matt Friedman on the Fourth of July.

The successful Renovation Campaign concluded with the beautiful renovation of the Nancy L. Donahue Theatre in Liberty Hall in 2012 (FY13) with additional funds for artistic enhancement, allowing MRT to expand artistic programming. At the same time, MRT staff and Board began to implement initiatives to fight industry-wide trends in lower earned revenue and a plateau in contributed income. Due to accounting principles related to capital campaigns, the entire sum of renovation pledges was recognized in FY13, leading to a significant surplus. MRT then projected a deficit for FY14, but, it is important to note, a positive cash flow as renovation pledges continued to be paid on their planned three-year schedule. In April 2014, Artistic Director Charles Towers announced he would step down at the end of the 2014-15 Season. MRT Board and staff convened in June 2014 for a strategic session in which they discussed their future vision for MRT and determined a position profile for the artistic leader to achieve this vision. The search, led by AlbertHall&Associates, launched from that session and concluded in December 2014 with the announcement of Sean Daniels as the next Artistic Director of MRT.

MRT remains focused on its mission to “to advance the cause of human understanding by creating theatrical productions at the highest level of artistic excellence and making them affordable to the broadest possible community.” This mission statement keeps MRT poised for future success, ensuring that MRT is committed to artistic and financial growth while remaining a vital part of our community.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

FROM THE CHAIR & PRESIDENT

BOARD OF TRUSTEES WELCOME

MRT is committed to engaging the whole community, regardless of background or economic status, and offers a variety of ticket

discounts in order to stay accessible to everyone.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH INITIATIVESMRT’s Student Matinee Series provides opportunities for local middle and high school students to experience an MRT performance at the Nancy L. Donahue Theatre in Liberty Hall. Comprised of matinee performances in a professional setting, study guides integrated with the curriculum, and Post-Show Discussions with the artists, this program helps students explore and understand the issues and possibilities that MRT’s plays inspire.

MRT’s Young Company is a summer theatre program for grades 1-12. This year’s program also included a muscial theatre session for grades 6-12. During each two-week session, students create an original play together and perform for family and friends.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMSMRT offers four paid, full-time internships a year, in company management, stage management, lighting and sound, and wardrobe. Semester-long college credit internships are available in marketing, development, and public relations.

AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENTMRT hosts Post-Show Discussions with the artists after every Thursday performance, as well as special behind-the-scenes events to explore the themes and issues of its productions and the art of theatre.

This year, MRT also added a pre-show discussion, led by Maureen Stanton, UMass Lowell professor and author (Killer Stuff and Tons of Money: An Insider’s Look at the World of Flea Markets, Antiques, and Collecting), connecting with the subject matter of Equally Divided.

COMMUNITY OUTREACHMRT hosts UMass Lowell Student Night and Middlesex Community College Night performances. Students receive discounted tickets and a pre-show reception. Community ticket discounts include “$5 Night,” “Lowell Night,” rush ticket sales, and discounts for senior citizens, veterans, and students.

EVENTSSPECIAL

T he Friends of MRT is a fundraising auxiliary that hosts special events, social functions, and fundraisers. This vital group plays a pivotal role in strengthening Merrimack

Repertory Theatre’s base of support, often by introducing people to MRT for the first time.

WINE AND BEER TASTINGThe Harvest Wine and Beer tasting took place on October 23, 2013, and raised over $5,000 for MRT. Thanks to Tutto Bene Wine and Cheese Cellar, MRT was joined by eight wine and beer vendors. Lowell Beer Works donated multiple cases of their newest beers for sampling, and hors d’oeuvres were generously provided by Centro Restaurant & Bar, Blue Taleh, and The Dessert Yurt.

HOLIDAY BASKET RAFFLEThe Holiday Basket Raffle was held in the Sage Bank Lobby of the Nancy L. Donahue Theatre during the performances of Stella and Lou from November 29 through December 22, 2013. The Friends raised $12,521 in support of MRT’s productions and educational programs through ticket sales. Subscriber Jan Saks and long-time supporter Donna McKittrick each won a basket filled with over $1,000 worth of goodies.

MRT’S 35TH ANNIVERSARY GALAThe 35th Anniversary Gala was held on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center. This unforgettable evening raised over $87,000, honored UMass Lowell’s Chancellor Martin T. Meehan, and included a special performance from The Reduced Shakespeare Company®.

From top: Guests at the Harvest Wine and Beer Tasting; Nels & Carol Palm, and Jim Cullen at the Anniversary Gala; Jack Moynihan, Carolyn Walsh, and Dean & Carole Kenney at the Anniversary Gala; Guests at the Anniversary Gala (City Manager Kevin Murphy, Mayor Rodney Elliott, UMass Lowell Chancellor Martin Meehan, Ann Murphy, Laura Elliot, Dick Donahue, Senator Nicola Tsongas, Steve Joncas, Jim O’Brien).
