FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

The 2014-2015 academic year is now underway — classrooms, hallways, dorms, and playing fields are abuzz with the excitement of new opportunities as approximately 125 new students and 13 newly minted faculty members

have brought a vibrant and fresh sense of excitement to Pomfret. Some 235 returning students and about 65 veteran faculty members have come back rested and ready for the challenges that lie ahead for us all over the next nine months. These months will provide an almost impossibly rich diversity of experiences for students and adults alike. Our students will benefit from an amazingly talented, diverse, and committed faculty, and from a staggering number of academic, athletic, artistic, and co-curricular offerings. Our faculty will benefit from new resources, from the fresh perspective of an unusually gifted new group of colleagues, from new opportunities to collaborate and create, and from a multifaceted and talented group of students with whom they will work as we

strive to be a recognized leader in the field of education. In short, I can promise you that during the next nine months truly exceptional learning, leading, and living will happen on this campus.

It is not lost on me that this will happen as a function of the generosity of so many philanthropic and dedicated people who choose to support Pomfret. In my travels I have the chance to talk with hundreds of people, all of whom have their own connection to Pomfret. Parents, grandparents, alumni/ae, trustees, friends of the School, former faculty members — no matter what the nature of the relationship, they all share some common feelings about this great School. Perhaps the most pervasive and repeated comment I hear about the School relates to the care, commitment, and connectedness of the faculty at Pomfret. While I can speak from experience about only the faculty of the past four years, my sense is that throughout its history there have always been those adults who have touched the lives of our students in amazing ways. Sadly, the past year said goodbye to two legendary Pomfret figures, Wye Garfield ’43 and Anne Ranhoff, who transformed the lives of countless students. We also bade farewell to longtime members of the Pomfret community, Ginny P ’91 and Marshall Eaton ’70 and Kathe Atwood, who before retiring this year together gave more than 100 years of service to this institution. The comments I have had from various stakeholders about the contributions of these five people alone would fill the pages of this report.

Everyone has his or her own reasons for supporting Pomfret, but what seems to resonate most clearly and consistently is people. Last year parents, grandparents, alumni/ae, and friends made donations in honor of 24 current faculty members, including beloved long-term teachers Jim Rees, Chip Lamb, Deb and Brad Davis, and the three aforementioned retirees, to name just a few. It seems that so often the reason for giving is inextricably linked to the people of this School and the programs they direct, which is how it should be.

At Pomfret we are fortunate to have so many people and programs that are truly worthy of your generous support. I am grateful to you for everything you did last year to help the work of our Advancement team keep pace with the growth and improvement in our program and curriculum that has been the direct result of The Pomfret Purpose, the strategic plan we adopted a year ago. Great things are in store at Pomfret again this year, and I hope we can count on you to continue to invest in this amazing place. Our dreams are big, matched by my confidence in the future of this School.

Thank you for your dedication to Pomfret and for supporting our faculty in everything we do to create the very best student experience possible.

Sincerely,

J. Timothy Richards, P ’15Head of School

Reunion MomentumThe Class of 1964 used the occasion of their 50th reunion to make a statement about their connection to each other, to the School, and their desire to give that connectivity a lasting, purposeful presence on the Hilltop. As an alumni/ae engagement and participation tour de force, the evolution of their gift, the Class of ’64 Terraces, came to represent far more than the sum of its parts.

Class of ’64 Terraces

6

Page 7: 2013-2014 Annual Report

If you get Jock Dix ’64 talking about the Class of ’64 Terraces you will hear about the evolution — an almost five-year twist-and-turn journey — from scant idea to tangible presence on

the Hilltop. Jock will tell you the story of The Terraces — how he and his classmates, already planning ahead in 2009, began a tentative, “informal dialogue” about what might make a lasting and impactful gift when they gathered again in May of 2014. Alumni/ae Association President Paul Fowler ’64 will tell you about “The Five Architects” (Jock, Class Secretary Peter Clement, Frank “Flash” Fuller, Mark Simon, Paul Steege) and how they embarked on a journey, literally and figuratively, of collaboration and reconnecting — all with the goal in mind of honoring Pomfret.

You will hear about the consensus that “we needed to do something cool," and how an idea came to Jock in the middle of the night, and the email he sent out. And the fact he thought none of his classmates liked the idea because his email address was incorrect and that initially, he got zero responses. But in fact, they loved it. “Pomfret School,” he proposed, “does not have a garden. No outside quiet place for contemplation of the issues that we, as students, had to wrestle with in our time.”

The goal: “to find something that sets us apart from other classes and other gifts given to the School on the occasion of a 50th reunion.” From the architects and beyond, the possibilities of providing a

landscaped retreat for solace and contemplation was embraced by the class as a whole. It seemed an appropriate way to connect their own hallowed experiences, as children of the “sixties,” with the students living life on the Hilltop fifty years later. You will hear about the cross-country design meetings and, the architects’ charrettes. According to Paul, they gathered from “Centerbrook and Pomfret [to] Florida, San Francisco, and Philadelphia.” “We sketched and drew and sketched and drew,” Jock says. And you will also hear about the design that emerged, the fundraising that followed, and the successful presentation of the plans to the Board.

But what captures your attention throughout the telling of the story is the joy.

“We had more fun on this project than we thought we were ever going to have,” Jock says. “It was the joy of rekindling friendships.” The idea to make “a gesture…that truly reflects the diverse interests and pursuits of our class,” was a unifying element. “The original concept was certainly idealistic and more romantic,” he says, “but it was an exercise in exciting the class and capturing their imagination. I wanted everybody to have a chance to imagine, dream, and contemplate without any restraint or preconceived notions.”

In the end, it rose above the gift. “The excuse to get us all together,” he says, “became the inspiration. We hopscotched all across the country.” Proud of their accomplishment, he believes his class (the last one, he says, “brought in” by Head of School Dave Twichell, Honorary ’62, P ’67 ) is a “poster child [of sorts] for organizing an alumni/ae group and getting something done.”

“Even people,” he said, “who we thought were lost forever were happy to be found.”

“Converting my contributions in appreciation for the past into a gratifying

investment in his future.”

10

Chuck Henry ’52, GP ’13, considered a “most loyal donor,” connected with his own fondly remembered Pomfret experiences and memories reinforced by a grandson’s, Charlie Gruner ’13, education on the Hilltop.

“Shortly after my graduation from Pomfret, I came to realize the significant positive effect the School had upon me. I began to support the Pomfret Fund while in college, and have continued to do so modestly, but consistently, ever since. Sixty years later, I was pleased to find my grandson benefiting even more from the same experience — converting my contributions in appreciation for the past into a gratifying investment in his future.”

Emma and Toby Calvert P ’17 gave generously to the Pomfret Fund in recognition of the tremendous experience their daughter is having on the Hilltop. “It is not difficult to give back to a school that has already, in one year, done so much to build up our daughter’s confidence and understanding about what hard work and taking chances can lead to. The community spirit alone was a driving force behind our willingness [to give back to the School].”

Connecting as Grateful Parents, with Expectations Met

Page 14: 2013-2014 Annual Report

Thanks to the commitment and collective efforts of Senior Class Gift co-chairs, Jim and Subha Barry P ’14 and Jeff and Lindsay Paul P ’14 ’17, and the generous response of a connected class of senior parents, a benchmark sum of nearly $400,000 on behalf of faculty professional development was raised this year. Their generous effort helped create an indelible gift to the School and set a great example of the power of working together for the future of Pomfret.

Jim and Subha Barry, parents of Jay ’14, connected with the “great legacy…of the wisdom and knowledge gained on the Hilltop.” Jeff and Lindsay Paul, parents of Chappy ’14 and Sam ’17, were inspired by Pomfret’s faculty and their feelings of both “responsibility and opportunity…to be at the forefront of inspiring young adults…and make a difference in their chosen paths.”

Working together, they and the other dedicated parent volunteers in the class made connections with their fellow parents and, augmented by a matching gift from Jim’s company, honored the faculty with the largest Senior Parent Gift in the history of the School.

This list acknowledges those donors who made cash gifts to the Pomfret Fund, capital projects or an endowed fund that results in them ranking in the

Top 100 donors of the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

For twin sisters Jo Anna Galanti Fellon ’02 and Christina Galanti Dickson ’02, the connection to Pomfret manifests itself in support that is financial and time and energy-related. Both are consistent supporters of the Pomfret

Fund (via monthly gifts), but with their equally engaged presence as career mentors, they are convincing examples of the power of keeping connected — and the myriad of ways to give back. Fully immersed in successful careers (Jo Anna is a Senior Tax Manager at a nationally ranked CPA firm; Christina, Director for a global pharmaceutical company). Both are active members of the Alumni/ae Association Executive Council (AAEC). The involvement is a family affair. Their husbands, who are not Pomfret graduates, also contribute time and advice with the gusto of true Griffins. “Some spouses don’t understand about Pomfret,” Christina said, “but our husbands get it!” Not content with sharing their wealth of experience only when invited to the Hilltop, early last summer the sisters, joined by their spouses, hosted a career networking event at the Penn Club in New York City. Nearly thirty alumni/ae attended. A second such gathering has already been added to the School’s spring 2015 calendar.

When asked to trace the roots of their commitment it came as no surprise that their connections to the School — and even their sometimes identical answers — came from cherished, empowering experiences and memories. For Jo Anna, “the major reason I’ve stayed so close to Pomfret is that it created for me, from a very early age, an awareness of the importance of community. Pomfret provided me a great foundation, teaching me the balance of work and life,” she said. “Our days on the Hilltop were so jam-packed

with academics and athletics. Everyone had friends and mentors. [Life was incredibly busy] but we had a very balanced life.” Giving back was “the only natural progression of the relationship. We did not know or appreciate at the time what a sense of community it gave us.”

“We didn’t want it to stop. We didn’t want to leave,” both continued, finishing each other’s sentences: “We never wanted to feel as if [those days] were over.” They did leave, and kept the Hilltop close. Clearly it wasn't over. “We left Pomfret and grew up,” Christina added, “but Pomfret never left us.”

When it comes to networking with the AAEC, both spoke of the importance of giving back, in the same way they felt they benefited: by being able to develop their distinct talents. “We came to Pomfret as two different people,” Christina said. And they flourished as individuals. “Pomfret,” added Jo Anna, “gives you the strength and the confidence” to try anything. Christina called it “the confidence to try new and different things, to find yourself trying new things and being okay” with it all. “That confidence,” she said, “keeps you going in both the collegiate and professional arenas.”

As role models for alumni/ae engagement, Jo Anna and Christina hope to inspire their fellow Griffins to become involved, as they did. Their Pomfret Fund support, AAEC leadership, the networking, and career mentoring are examples of the many creative ways one can make an impact on the future of Pomfret — as many ways as there are alumni/ae. “We want others to give back,” Christina said, “both monetarily and in the more unconventional ways that we have.”

Christina Galanti Dickson ’02 and Jo Anna Galanti Fellon ’02 with their husbands and brother Michael join Anne and Head of School Tim Richards P’15 at the Holiday Reception in New York City in December 2013. (l-r): Tim Dickson, Christina, Anne and Tim, Michael Galanti, Brian Fellon, and Jo Anna.

It’s a Family Affair... Inspiring others to give back in ways that are truly unique

Page 26: 2013-2014 Annual Report

On the eve of his 50th reunion, Justin Klein ’65 can still recall the lifeline of support he was thrown from his advisor (Per-Jan Ranhoff) in his first year. The helpful seeds of that nurturing touch took root and flourished into an adult life committed to philanthropy and — as a successful Philadelphia-based attorney — an unofficial calling dispensing career advice. Now serving his third term as a Pomfret Trustee, Justin has been involved in almost every aspect of Board leadership. Prior to his Board service, he was Alumni/ae Association president; and before that, class secretary. He speaks ardently about the “personal satisfaction” of Board service. (Last year he earned a

spot in the Philadelphia Business Journal’s top ten of Philadelphia’s “most outstanding board directors.”)

For Justin, it’s all about the connections, both past and present. His enthusiastic engagement as a career mentor via the Pomfret Career Network keeps everyone on their toes. “He has been an invaluable resource and mentor to me as I pursue law school and a legal career,” says Stephanie Bradford ’08. “He has been incredibly generous with his time, advocating on my behalf during the law school admissions process, and even writing me a letter of recommendation. My experience exemplifies why I am so grateful to have graduated from a school like Pomfret with such an actively engaged alumni/ae network."

Connections, Past and Present“An invaluable resource and mentor...”

Nick Storrs ’56 (pictured second from the right) with his classmates and Chick Cole, Honorary ’56 at their 50th Reunion [in 2006].

Before he passed away in April of 2012, Richard S. “Nick” Storrs ’56 honored Pomfret in numerous ways, and on many levels. He was an active, diligent alumnus and a thoughtful supporter. He spent numerous years as class agent and he was instrumental in drawing a good crowd back for the Class of 1956 50th reunion in 2006.

One of his favorite activities was staying connected with his classmates. According to his wife Jean, Nick understood the simple but powerful effect of the “verbal support of reconnecting.” Jean remembers, “We made a number of campus visits over the years… I loved watching it grow.”

An active volunteer in his own community, Nick always kept Pomfret in his sights. Among other tributes to the School, he chose to make “one final gift.” It came as a surprise, and Jean remembers receiving the celebratory call from Tammie LaBonte in the Advancement Office, telling her the School had just received Nick’s generous surprise gift at a time when they weren’t sure they were going to meet their budgeted goal. Thanks to his forethought (and a little serendipity), Nick’s gift put Pomfret “over the top!” Tammie said, “We knew Nick had to have been looking down and smiling.”

“He did not make a lot of bequests,” Jean added, “but this was definitely one he wanted to do.”

Two years prior to his passing, as part of a Volunteer Profile feature, Nick was asked why he stayed so involved, to which he replied, “Pomfret is my school, located on the hill with the valley below. What a beautiful site, with all of the colonial buildings… The desks are different than in our day; the football players look bigger and tougher; the Ben Grosvenor isn’t there for lunch any longer, but the spirit sure is still there.” So is Nick’s.

Kate Lindsey P ’02, ’09, who served on the Board from 2006-2010, connected to the teaching, the faculty, the nurturing, the values, and the balance. Kate recently made a bequest to the School’s endowment, to both show support for and enhance faculty enrichment.

“When I first brought my son John to the Hilltop in the fall of 1998,” she says, “I was struck by the great sense of excitement and joy [I saw] in the older returning students.”

Katie has tremendous respect for all faculty on the Hilltop. She speaks particularly fondly of math teachers Ted and Ellen Browne P ’17, who she feels saved her son John ’02 in math “because they gave him the confidence to succeed.” Pomfret, she feels, “provides students with a strong value system and dedicated teachers who are always trying to find ways to ensure that their students will succeed, both in the classroom and in life. Somehow, remarkably, Pomfret balances students’ learning with students’ ‛leaning in’ — allowing them to gain the knowledge that they need to be global thinkers and prepared for college, while at the same time encouraging them to grow, explore, be creative and challenge themselves to take advantage of all new opportunities.”

“It is easy to make Pomfret one of my priorities,” Katie says. “They certainly made my children theirs.”

A Creative, Connected Way of Paying it Forward. “I would not have gotten the internship and the experience without his help.

He was really, really helpful.”

Jim Seymour ’65 is a man of many connections — and clearly relishes every one. He is a Renaissance man of ideas and interests, with an infectious desire to share and connect people and experiences. His favored advisor at Pomfret was English teacher and wrestling coach Hagop Merjian, a man he remembers and admired (and stayed in touch with) for his “ambition and impact.” Jim is appreciated in the Advancement Office for his “tremendous work” in a variety of Pomfret initiatives, from the Grauer Institute to the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and the Pomfret Alumni/ae Career Exploration Series (PACES).

Describing himself as a “strategic advisor to private equity firms,” a good day at the office for Jim involves positioning investors’ money as a “tool for economic and

social development and positive social impact.” A better day is when he is able to pay it all forward with his own tools of passion and experience. At last winter’s PACES Expo Jim connected with Kate McNaughton ’14. “I met Mr. Seymour during the Alumni/ae Career Fair night,” she said. “We connected because we both live in Rhode Island and both love to travel; he spends a lot of time working with companies overseas. He offered me help in finding a summer internship.”

“I would not have gotten the internship and the experience without his help," Kate added. "He was really, really helpful, and I’m really grateful to him.”
