Ladies and Gentlemen, The Musicians of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and I are committed to bringing the �nest possible performances of a wide range of orchestral music. This past season was �lled with many highlights. We introduced a number of important works to our classical audiences for the �rst time, including Strauss’ monumental Alpine Symphony and Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. Other memorable performances included Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony, Verdi’s Requiem and a complete performance of Daphnis et Chloé with Dance Kaleidoscope. All of this was possible because of great support of our community. I feel like we achieved so much together, and to each of you, I o�er my thanks and look forward to sharing many more wonderful performances with you.

Not only did we present more concerts, create more inspiring programs, reach more people and connect with more communities, but we did it with a balanced budget – for the second consecutive year – under the insightful direction of Chief Executive O�cer Gary Ginstling and his talented colleagues. Included in this annual report is a review of our achievements on and o� the stage and an analysis of our �nancial information, which demonstrates our commitment to operating within our means. Thanks to everyone who supported the ISO in this extraordinary e�ort to reach such lofty goals. Your support makes all of this success possible. As we transition to a new chapter in the ISO’s board leadership with incoming chair Vince Caponi, I’m con�dent that we can continue these positive trends in sustainability, especially with our commitment to growing the ISO’s community of supporters and patrons. We’re already o� to a great start in increasing our footprint, with our new ISO Lunch Break Series, 317 Series and Palladium Series. Our work is never done – and we are very optimistic about the year ahead. As I conclude my term as board chair, I’m proud that this great city has a �rst-rate Orchestra, a committed ISO board, a talented sta� and crew, a strong support network and a passionate community.

Dear friends, On behalf of the ISO Board of Directors, I’m pleased to report that the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s 2013-2014 season had all the ingredients in place to claim and celebrate success: the outstanding musical leadership of Krzysztof Urbański, Jack Everly’s unwavering commitment to excellence in the Pops tradition, ambitious programming by Time for Three, a strong season of diverse musical experiences for all ages, substantial growth in subscriptions, overwhelming generosity from our donors and sponsors and greater “buzz” in the community about who we are, what we o�er and how we make an impact.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s mission is to inspire, entertain, educate and challenge through innovative programs and symphonic music performed at the highest artistic level.

THE 2013-2014 SEASON: A YEAR IN REVIEW

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra opened its doors to the entire community on Saturday, Sept. 21, for a celebration of its opening season and to thank its patrons, fans, donors and sponsors for the extraordi-nary support it had received this past year. The event was �lled with free activities and music-making, which culminated in a free concert featuring the ISO and Music Director Krzysztof Urbański. More than 1,100 patrons enjoyed the day-long celebration.

A day later, the 2013-2014 season kicked o� with the formal and festive Opening Night Gala, featuring renowned violinist Hilary Hahn performing Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy and the ISO presenting Brahms’ lyrical second symphony.

The 2013-2014 season of Lilly Classical Series concerts was packed with big, bold and beautiful works – Verdi’s Requiem, Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony, Strauss’ Alpine Symphony – that showcased Music Director Krzysztof Urbański’s vision. Urbański also continued his passion for introducing Indianapolis audiences to signi�cant works by Polish composers Szymanowski, Lutosławski and Górecki.

Urbański’s inaugural recording as Music Director, featuring Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Zuill Bailey and selections from Smetana’s Má vlast, was released in 2013.

Realizing Maestro Urbański’s dream of collaborating on culturally adventurous projects, the ISO, Dance Kaleidoscope and Clowes Memorial Hall presented the fully-staged version of Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé – considered one of the composer’s greatest masterpieces – in two performances, June 13-14, 2014. Supported by a lead grant from Lilly Endowment Inc, Daphnis et Chloé was arguably the most ambitious artistic collaboration of the three organizations to date, as Ravel’s masterpiece is rarely attempted in full-scale in the United States.

With DK Artistic Director David Hochoy’s original choreography and the ISO’s superior performance, it was easy to agree with NUVO Newsweekly’s concluding statement in its review: “All parties to bringing about this extravaganza are to be commended for superlative execution throughout the two-hour program.”

JACK EVERLY — OUR “KING OF POPS” — CONTINUES TO INNOVATE AND ENTERTAIN

In the Printing Partners Pops Series, Maestro Everly opened the season with great fanfare as the world premiere program, On Broadway with Kander & Ebb, set the symphonic stage for the memorable music of legendary songwriting, team John Kander and Fred Ebb. In addition, Everly continued an ISO pops tradition of transforming a musical to a full symphonic production with Cole Porter’s Anything Goes, featuring the all-star cast of Rachel York, Gary Beach, Judy Kaye and Max von Essen.

Pops subscribers and fans also got a taste of the diverse pops season through the songbook of Barbra Streisand, performed by award-winning, singer/songwriter, Ann Hampton Callaway; the �lm Singin’ in the Rain with full orchestra accompaniment; a weekend of the music of the Baby Boomers; the father-son duo of pianist Rich Ridenour and trumpet player Brandon Ridenour in I Love a Piano!; a Valentine’s weekend of romantic standards conducted by Steve Hackman; and the acrobatic delights of Cirque de la Symphonie.

The hard work and talent of Maestro Everly, �ve-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Sandi Patty, guest artists The von Trapps and the Yuletide cast and crew made this year’s 28th annual Duke Energy Yuletide Celebration an all-time hit for 40,000 concertgoers.

For the ISO’s Thanksgiving event, trumpeter Chris Botti performed his award-winning hits in front of a packed audience at the Hilbert Circle Theatre; Conductor Laureate Raymond Leppard continued his tradition of celebrating the season with his special program, Classical Christmas; and Handel’s liturgical masterpiece, Messiah, was the perfect complement to a month full of musical holiday traditions.

BREAKING NEWS: ISO BUCKS INDUSTRY TREND!

At the conclusion of the indoor concert season, the ISOreported substantial growth in overall ticket and subscription sales. Of note:

• Total number of tickets sold for indoor concerts increased by 18 percent from previous year.

• FY14 subscription sales for classical, pops and family increased 30 percent over previous year and are at their highest level since the 2008-2009 season.

• ISO sold a record number 6,569 student tickets – a 50 percent increase from last year and most student tickets ever sold in a single season.

• And most notably, new subscribers make up a large chunk of the ISO’s success in subscription sales – new classical subscribers are up 126 percent; new pops subscribers are up 248 percent; and new family subscribers are up 400 percent!

“IT SURE BEATS EATING AT YOUR DESK!” — ISO LUNCH BREAK SERIES ATTRACTS 2,000

With support from the Efroymson Family Fund and the Margot L. Eccles Arts & Culture Fund, the ISO added a series of one-hour concerts to its summertime schedule, designed to engage and entertain downtown Indy’s lunch crowd for a low price. More than 2,000 concertgoers enjoyed this new concert experience of great classical masterworks while they munched on delicacies from local food trucks parked on Monument Circle. Orchestra musicians dressed in their “street clothes” completed the look of this inviting community gathering of music lovers.

TIME FOR THREE — “IF IT’S GOOD, WE’LL PLAY IT!”

Classical masterpieces get an unconventional twist when ISO artists-in-residence Time for Three design the Stella Artois Happy Hour at the Symphony Series. And audiences continue to respond with their patronage and outspoken enthusiasm.

This season, Tf3 members Zach De Pue, Nick Kendall and Ranaan Meyer invited rap artists, percussionists and folk artists to the stage, keeping their musical vision intact – “If it’s good, we’ll play it,” remarks Kendall. Since Time for Three’s curation of the Happy Hour in 2008, the series has more than doubled in average attendance.

X” MARKS THE [INNOVATIVE] SPOT

The Hilbert Circle Theatre was the spot for TEDx Indianapolis – the self-organized, local conference that shares big, creative ideas from speakers through unique performances, TEDTalks videos and activities. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performed as part of the musical lineup, becoming the �rst Orchestra to ever participate in a TEDx event.

OUTDOOR PERFORMANCES MORE POPULAR THAN EVER

Great summer weather and a dynamic schedule of concerts gave the ISO one of the best outdoor seasons yet, with revenue for Marsh Symphony on the Prairie surpassing last year’s all-time sales record. In addition, the ISO delighted thousands more outdoor music-lovers with three free performances in Indy Parks located on the east, south and north sides of town.

STUDENTS ON OUR STAGE, IN THE LIMELIGHT,IN OUR HALLS IN RECORD NUMBERS

The ISO continues to counter the perception that “it’s di�cult to attract young people to symphonic music.” Case in point: all previous records were broken when 6,569 students purchased tickets this season, and 70 percent of those student tickets were for classical concerts!

Students didn’t just attend, though. They also demonstrated their musical talents. Fifty high schoolers representing 20 schools in central Indiana were chosen to perform next to their professional counterparts in the Orchestra during the Side-by-Side concert. Fourteen-year-old violinist Nathan Meltzer won the Michael Ben and Illene Komisarow Maurer Young Musicians Contest and performed with the ISO for a special event on Eli Lilly & Company’s campus. And young composer Troy Armstrong won the ISO’s Marilyn K. Glick Young Composer’s Showcase and premiered his work, Supercell, in concerts in April.

STUDENTS DISCOVER THE SYMPHONY

The grandfather of all ISO Learning Community programs is the Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Discovery Concerts. Started in 1937, this program introduces the symphonic experience to more than 16,000 elementary-aged children. This year, Assistant Conductor David Glover added elements of interactivity into the full-orchestra program and challenged the to students think beyond the score. For instance, for Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony, students built a “Beethoven rainstorm!”

MAKING AN IMPACT EARLY IN CHILDHOOD

Aligned with the city and state’s commitment to providing early childhood education, the ISO’s Learning Community presented seven PNC Great Beginnings Making Music in the Early Childhood Classroom workshops. In addition, the ISO collaborated with the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library to provide 14 Making Music sessions for pre-school children and parents/caregivers at Indianapolis Public Library branches. Due to the positive reaction of these programs, the ISO plans to expand its services to families with young children beginning in 2015.

FUN FACT: STUDENT PAYS IT FORWARD After an enjoyable concert at the ISO with her family, Maya, a fourth grader, wanted other families to have the same experience. She contacted symphony subscribers who were willing to donate unused tickets and distributed them to interested classmates at school. The end result: Maya distributed 48 tickets to deserving friends who might never have had the opportunity to go.

TEACHING MUSIC, SHAPING LIVES,ENCOURAGING SUCCESS

As a �agship program of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (MYO) continued its mission to engage students in activities that encourage positive behaviors and success in school and in life. MYO Artistic Director Betty Perry, sta� and music educators led a full schedule of rehearsals and concerts for more than 200 participants. One of the greatest success measures was met once again – every senior graduated high school and pursued a post-secondary education. And even more encouraging, these students live in areas with the lowest graduation rates!

In addition, members of the ISO’s young professionals group, FORTE, led special workshops on college preparation and career choices for the MYO middle schoolers and served as mentors, counselors and life coaches for the students. With the love of music at the core, this deeper connection between our young professionals and our young minds is part of the success story of both FORTE – as leaders – and the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra – as our future leaders.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY OF BUSINESS LEADERS

Companies and businesses of all shapes and sizes typically face similar challenges: how to retain a high-quality workforce, how to create alignment and how to keep employees engaged in the company vision. The ISO’s “Art of Leadership” program was created to help address these challenges, using the unique environment of an orchestra setting. This year, employees from Eli Lilly & Company and Dow AgroSciences took part in the workshops and commented on how the sessions were “engaging,” “practical” and “fun” – especially the drum circle!

WINNING AWARDS FOR SERVICE

Assistant Principal Contrabass Robert Goodlett was awarded the Renato Pacini “Patch” Leadership Award for his volunteer service, commitment to music education and dedication to the ISO. In addition, librarian Susan Grymonpré, Principal Flute Karen Moratz and Principal Bassoon John Wetherill were recognized for their 25 years of service.

LETTER FROM THE TREASURER

(FY13). For the second consecutive year, the ISO ended the year with a balanced budget, posting a general operating surplus in FY14 of $266,255. The results during FY14 were particularly encouraging in the area of ticket sales. Earned income from ticket sales increased 13.7% over FY13. Total number of tickets sold for the ISO’s indoor concerts increased by 18% in FY14 over the prior year. Subscription sales for the classical, pops and family concerts increased 30% in FY14 over FY13. Subscription sales were at the highest level since FY09, mainly due to a renewed focus on marketing subscription packages launched in the spring of 2013. The ISO’s Marsh Symphony on the Prairie outdoor concert season achieved a 15% increase in ticket sales over the prior year to successfully close out FY14.

The ISO also had another successful fundraising year in FY14 with over $9.73 million in contributions. Both FY14 and FY13 had contribution levels that far exceeded any previous year in the history of the ISO. This new level of fundraising could not have been achieved for the second consecutive year without strong community support, and we are extremely grateful to the thousands of individuals, corporations and founda-tions who have invested in the ISO.

The ISO Board of Directors is committed to ensuring that the institution continues to present artistically compelling performances and

path towards this goal.
