Studio Art Program Student Exhibition Procedure:1. Discuss your exhibition ideas with the current Program Director. Then reserve gallery space by adding your name and your exhibition details to the sign-up sheets outside the Loyola 13 door.2. In advance, discuss with the Studio Manager the times you will be installing and de-installing. We will ar-

range with Public Safety for you to have access to the gallery. 3. If you intend on making special arrangements or requests or installing materials you must inform the Studio Manager 2 weeks prior to installation.4. Provide an artist’s statement and photos for inclusion on the Studio Art web pages and or in the SA Handbook.5. If you plan on hosting an opening reception it will take place on the first day of your show. Discuss with the Studio Manager the details and times of the reception 2 weeks prior. You will be responsible for any refreshments provided (beverages must be non-alcoholic) as well as set-up and cleanup.6. Be prompt with your de-install. You are responsible for leav-

ing the gallery in a clean condition. This includes removing all artwork and/or props; removing all tacks, tape, labels and pins; spackling to fill holes; repairing or repainting walls and floor; and sweeping the floor. You are responsible for removing any equipment used and returning all equipment to their appropriate room(s). Dur-ing de-installation, you MUST return all furniture, bookshelves, or any other materials that were removed for the exhibition. Any lost materials will be replaced at your expense–exhibitors will be required to reimburse the Studio Art Program within 10 days.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS: UNIVERSITY AND DE-PARTMENT EXHIBITIONS, HONORS, AWARDS, AND PRIZES

Exhibiting Oportunities

The Lukacs Gallery, The Experimental Space and Gallery 10The Studio Art Program has 3 exhibition spaces dedicated to the installation of student work at Fairfield University. The spaces are The Lukacs Gallery, The Experimental Space and Gallery 10; all the galleries are located on the ground floor of Loyola. The galleries feature group and solo exhibitions by studio art majors, minors, and undergraduates enrolled in classes in the program.

The galleries offer students spaces to experiement with new ideas and gain experience with conceptualizing and visually organizing a working exhibition from start to finish. In prepara-tion for the installation of exhibitions, students learn through first hand practice how to select, organize, and plan pieces for an exhibition. Decisions about titles, numbering, lighting, and installation help to introduce some of the practical and technical aspects of exhibiting. Students will think conceptually about the dynamics of the space as a whole and as it relates to their work.

Studio Art majors and minors in their junior and senior years may submit to the current Program Director images of their most recent work to be considered for a solo exhibition. Or a student may be recommended to have a solo show by a Studio Art Professor s/he is studying with at Fairfield. Once approved to exhibit a student would follow the procedures below.

Honors, Awards and Prizes

The Mary Louise Larrabee PrizeEach year, the Department of Visual and Perform-ing Arts presents the Mary Louise Larrabee Prizes to a select group of students majoring or minoring in the arts at Fairfield. The awards range in value from $500.00 to $1,500.00 and were established in 1994 through the generosity of Mrs. Mary Louise Larrabee. Prizes can contribute to the expenses of any of the following: tuition, travel, accommoda-tions, living expenses, special courses, and spe-cial artistic projects. Freshman, sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply for this award. Look for an announcement with more information sometime around winter break. Consider to what experience you might apply a Larrabee Prize. Cop-ies of awarded proposals from previous years are available in Canisius 3 to help you generate ideas. If applying for the Larrabee Prize students are required to work with either Professor Chamlin or Professor Yarrington beginning on October 1. Students are responsible to seek out these full time faculty members as mentors who will help you polish your proposal, write a letter of support, and act as your advocate to the award committee. Be sure to include an itemized budget for your project. Arts & Sciences AwardsOpen competition to all students in the College of Arts & Sciences.January: Announcement of competition.March: Application deadline.April: Arts & Sciences Awards Night. Competition awards announced, Departmental awards announced, Lar-rabee Prizes announced.

Internships, Careers in the Arts and Graduate School Programs Information is available by Program Area in DiMenna-Nyselius Library, with the Office of the VPA Department Coordinator and in the Career Planning Center. Information is continually updated, so check regularly with all resources and your advisor.

Internships Request your applications early! With the help of your program director during the semester before the intern-ship plan your schedule and and submit your application .

Preparation for Careers in the Arts Junior/Senior Year Timetable• Collect information from the various outlets inside and outside the SA program and from your advisor. Contact department alumni.• Organize your portfolio by year, medium and subject.• Take digital images of your portfolio.• Continually update and revise resumé, and artist state-ment.• Actively seek internships.

ART INTERNSHIPS AND CAREERS

Digital Imaging LabThis Lab is where RCADE workshops as well as media classes are held. Its Apple workstations are loaded with the most current image editing and multimedia authoring software. Advanced Editing SuiteWith its nine Apple workstations, this room is used specifically for video editing. Each station is equipped with Final Cut Pro Studio 2, Apple iLife, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS2, and DVD Studio Pro.

From Curriculum to Career• Studio Art majors develop multiple drafts of their artists’ statements, resumés, and photograph their works in their Junior and Senior year.• Critiques prepare students to express their ideas verbally, and to learn to place their works in context relative to other artists. • Gallery and museum trips followed by written assignments give students exposure to a wide range of artists, galleries and museums.• We encourage our majors to intern in the arts, especially studio arts, which will give them a wide range of exposure and experience working for companies and individual artists. • Through Independent Studies students deepen their practice and exploration of subject matter. • Engagement with professional exhibiting practices is taught as students prepare for exhibitions on campus and sometimes off campus too.• Attend as many lectures by visiting artists as possible.• Professional Day - alumni are invited to share their experiences with majors in the seminar class.

Possible CareersThere will be posted on the Studio Art bulletin board in the SA hallway in Loyola a list of career possibilites.
