Welcome to the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts! Did you know that during the past year, over 50,000 people visited the Center, with approximately 12,000 of these visitors under the age of 18? Did you know that over 1,529 artists participated at the Center and that we offered over 220 classes, 2 summer camps and 4 weeks of Kids Arts College? When people ask me What is the Suffolk Center?, these are just a few of the things I can tell them. The Suffolk Center is the Heart of Suffolk, where visitors can enjoy not only the visual, but also the performing arts. Our intimate Birdsong Theater and our BB&T and Hampton Roads Foundation Galleries are wonderful venues where our community can enjoy performances and events, and the Taylor Hall Ballroom, with its balcony and sweeping grand staircase, is unmatched in our city. Did you know that the Center hosted field trips for over 5,000 students to see productions directly keyed into the SOLs and that exposure to the arts positively correlates with higher SAT verbal and math scores, lowers dropout rates and reduces delinquency? Through private donations to the Jimmy Spain Education Fund, the Center offered over $20,000 in scholarships and programming last year. Did you know that the Center supports the economic vitality of Suffolk by serving as an engine for increased tax revenue for the City and that arts venues attract businesses because they enhance a communitys quality of life and help attract a young, educated workforce? We are very grateful for our hard working staff, wonderful board members, past and present, and to the City of Suffolk for their continuing support. I hope that you will join us by becoming a member of the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. 49% of our budget comes from donations and grants from individuals and corporations, so your support is vital. Memberships begin at the $20 student level and benefits are numerous, including discounts. Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to be a part of something special. Be a friend of the Center and join us!

I hope to see you often!

  • 5It is also important for citizens to know that the Center supports the economic vitality of the City of Suffolk by increasing local tax revenue. Last year visitors from all over the East Coast came to Suffolk to see a show, attend a reception, participate in a workshop or just stroll through the art galleries at the Suffolk Center. These patrons bring additional dollars to local hotels, restaurants, gas stations and shops which in turn support the City of Suffolks annual earned income through taxes.

I am pleased to announce that we have an exciting year planned for our 8th season. Please read on to learn more about the variety of opportunities for you, your family and your friends to participate here at the Center. We will continue to add to our programing as the year progresses, so please come by or visit the website (www.suffolkcenter.org) to discover the latest happenings at the Center. In closing, I would like to acknowledge the Suffolk Centers staff and Board members. I am fortunate to have a dedicated team by my side who are also passionate about their work here at the Center and who understand the importance, value and positive impact that the Center has on the quality of life in Suffolk. Together with you, our Investor in the Center, we are creating a wonderful ROI, Return On Investment, for generations to come.

    All the best,

    Jackie W. Cherry, Executive Director/CEO

    a message from our Director

    Dear Friends,

The Suffolk Center is for you! On behalf of the staff, the Board of Directors and our wonderful volunteers, I would like to express our gratitude for your support of the Center and for allowing us the opportunity to serve you. If this is your first visit, we welcome you! Come and join us again and again - become a member and be a part of our family! Whether you are attending a performance, hosting a business meeting, or watching your child showcase his or her talent, we want you to take advantage of and enjoy your neighborhood arts center.

It has become apparent while working with several organizations this year that many folks throughout Hampton Roads are not aware of the wonderful things happening at and through the Suffolk Center. With your help, I hope to spread the word and increase public awareness about the diverse programming, classes, exhibits, activities and opportunities that the Suffolk Center offers to all of our citizens while simultaneously supporting the economic health of the City of Suffolk.

As you flip through the 2013-14 playbill, you will find a few fast facts that may surprise even our most faithful supporter. It might be news to you that our rotating gallery exhibits are always free and open to all, that we offer over 200 visual and performing arts classes throughout year, that we work with the school systems to expose over 5,000 school children annually to the magic of live performances directly keyed in to their SOLs, that we take the arts into the schools through our Artists in Schools program, that we offer programs for at-risk youth, that we engage the community through public/private partnerships, or that more than 50,000 guests visited the Center last year. We are a resource for learning for all in our community, and we make a tremendous difference to our youth.

Turning 70 years young this year, Robertson continues to charm audiences with her humorous observations about life around her. This former Miss North Carolina, standing tall at six-foot-two, has an infectious personality, heart and sense of humor.

With seven nationally released DVDs, three books, hundreds of hours on Sirius-XM satellite radio and over 17 million YouTube hits, the demand for Robertsons family-friendly and engaging brand of comedy has grown exponentially. Some of her most popular anecdotes include Dont Go to Vegas Without a Baptist, Dont Bungee Jump Naked, and Dont Send a Man to the Grocery Store.

Robertsons witty depiction of everyday situations never fails to have audiences of all ages rolling with laughter. Dont miss this performance by a truly funny lady!

As a local Arts Educator I have had the privilege of teaching in all seven cities in Hampton Roads since 1999. These experiences have convinced me that the Arts have an overwhelming power to change lives. At the Suffolk Center I have taught Steel Drums to youth and adults who build their confidence through the arts and gain a sense of accomplishment and personal development. Furthermore, working at the Suffolk Center with underserved youth populations continues to show me how the arts develop greater self-esteem and inspiration among participants.

When Arts learning is combined with actual performance of the learned material the true beauty and the power of the Arts is revealed in the hearts of participants. I am grateful that the Suffolk Center provides such perfor-mance outlets for our classes. Forever etched in my memory is the time one of my students was overcome by the flood of applause so much that he did not know how to react. That experience brought to my realization that many people live their lives void of the praise that the Arts so straightforwardly provide.

The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts has captured all of these rich Arts experiences and enveloped them in an attractive year-round program. Moreover, with sensitivity to the needs of the community, the Suffolk

Center strives to make their classes and programs financially accessible and exciting to a wide range of individuals. I am proud to be a part of the excitement at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. Thank you for inclusion of my services and your commitment to the Arts.

100 Years of PlantersSeptember 14th November 2nd Free and Open to the Public

Little did Amedeo Obici know that when he moved his small peanut roasting business to Suffolk in 1913 it would lead to one of the most famous nut and snack companies in the world. For 100 Years, Planters has built a reputation of being an American icon for delivering consistently fresh-tasting nuts, and Suffolk is where it all started. To celebrate this milestone a special showing of Mr. Peanut memorabilia and collectables will be on exhibit.

Having been born and reared in Suffolk I was one of the fortunate ones to have attended Suffolk High School throughout that period of my life and those days were undoubtedly some of my very best days ever! Some 30 years later, in 1998, a group of concerned local citizens developed a plan to revitalize that great institution and now we have an absolute jewel close to downtown and available to people from all over Hampton Roads and elsewhere, in the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts!! My former good ole Suffolk High School is now serving as a full service cultural arts center which continues to educate and entertain many people of all ages, who take advantage of the tremendous number of shows, events, and learning opportunities!!

    a message from amemBer

It is my strong opinion that the Suffolk Cultural Arts Center continues to be a driving force in the Suffolk economic development rebound and will continue to do so as it caters to a widely varied populace of our citizens as well as those who are not from this area. As a real estate broker in the Suffolk area for almost four decades, I am always extremely proud to show them the Center when I am introducing new folks who are contemplating moving to this City. The Center will continue to be a big draw for those new people coming to Suffolk and thank goodness for those who had the insight in the late 90s to develop a plan for the former school which had been closed for several years. I am proud to be a Suffolkian and I am proud to support the Center and all it represents for so many people and organizations throughout this whole region! Billy Chorey Sr.

I enjoy being a volunteer and supporter of the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. It is a venue in Suffolk to hold events for entertainment and educational experiences that add to the overall culture of our community. It has been a place to socialize with friends in Suffolk and attracts visitors from throughout Hampton Roads.

The Center has been a catalyst of revitalization in downtown Suffolk, the home of our courts, municipal center, museums, shops, and great restaurants. Good first impressions add to the suc-cess of our city and the Center adds to an overall hometown feel.

I have the privilege of being the greeter at the Center and this gives me the opportunity of giving the first impression of who we are, what we do, and what we are all about. I like to think that I give a decent impression so people will want to come back and see us again. I often tell them we have something for everyone whether you are young, middle aged or consider yourself to be over the hill and picking up speed at a rapid pace. All kinds of classes for all kinds of inter-ests, shows with great performances, summer programs; the list

    goes on and on.

The Center is one of the jewels in Suffolks ever-developing crown. Our prices are affordable, we are easy to find and every season holds the promise of something different and unique. Special exhibits are featured throughout the year. There is space for weddings, parties and celebrations for special occasions.

This season WILL not disappoint. There is going to be something old, new or familiar that you can enjoy. Tickets to our performances make great anniversary, birthday and special occasion gifts. During the evening shows, you can eat dinner at Mosaic Caf, purchase unique gifts from Jesters Gallery Shop and enjoy a great performance. It doesnt get any better than that.

What more can you ask for? I have been a volunteer ever since the Center opened and if they paid me, I

would probably give the money back. Its that much fun.

COME ON DOWN AND SEE US SOMETIME!!
