2013 ANNUAL REPORT

ABOUT THE TIMING OF THE ANNUAL REPORTThe annual report for the calendar year 2012 came to readers in the Autumn 2013 issue of the Forum. Since then we have adjusted the production schedule and will return to producing four issues a year. We have a bit of make-up work to do in this report. Each Winter Issue will contain the annual report of the previous calendar year. Statements of financial position for Mortar Board, Inc. and the Mortar Board National Foundation will be reported after formal review by an accounting firm and acceptance by the National Council and Board of Trustees, so they will necessarily lag by a year.

COLLEGIATE CHAPTERSNew members are the lifeblood of our Society. As our National President Marty Starling has written, we must talk about Mortar Board and encourage college students to aspire to membership. Our section coordinators are mobilizing as effective leaders to improve the collegiate experience for all their chapters’ members, which in turn will increase Mortar Board’s service to campus communities. Our Society added 5,135 initiates in 2013 and, although chapter accounts are not all cleared for 2014, we initiated 4,802 in 2014. We have 175 active collegiate chapters. Honorary members continue to bring distinction to our Society. In 2013 there were 42 honorary members chosen by 24 chapters, and in 2014 there were 53 honorary members selected by 28 chapters. Member fees, paid once upon initiation, were raised to $80 in 2013. They had been $75. The collegiate chapter conference fee was increased in 2014 to $350 from $250. In 2013 Mortar Board added the Epignosis chapter at Alcorn State University, which was installed by National President Susan Herndon Caples (The University of Alabama, 2006). National President Starling installed the Black & Gold chapter at Pacific Lutheran University in 2014.

THE MBAA AND ALUMNI CHAPTERSMortar Board’s 15 alumni chapters continue programming beneficial to their members. All of our alumni chapters face the “graying” issues so common to membership organizations like ours, an issue that was tackled at the 2014 Alumni Summit in Atlanta. The Milwaukee Alumni chapter decided to close its operation in 2014, donating its treasury of more than $7,000 to the Mortar Board National Foundation. Chapter leader Mary Ladd Loots (The University of Iowa, 1952) wrote about the members’ decision to cease operations in the Spring/Summer 2014 Issue of the Forum. The Chicago Alumni chapter was born in 2013 and held several creative get-togethers. Interest in the Indianapolis Alumni chapter’s reinvigoration may lead to a great opportunity for members in central Indiana. Mortar Board is grateful to alumni who support members and collegiate chapters by their attendance, hosting, connections and financial gifts. The MBAA has 370 members! Membership, which is annual ($45) or for a lifetime ($600), includes a subscription to both the print and digital issues of the Forum. MBAA members have been valuable volunteers for national operations like individual and chapter award reviews.

AWARDSThe Ohio State University Mabel G. Freeman chapter won the Ruth Weimer Mount Chapter Excellence Award in 2013; and, for the first time, two chapters shared the prize in 2014: the Barbara Cook chapter at Purdue and the Xi Phi chapter at The University of Nebraska at Kearney. This was the Purdue chapter’s second win. Since the award was first given in 2002, 12 chapters have received this top honor. In 2013, our most improved chapters were the Cap & Gown chapter of Mississippi College and the University of South Dakota’s Keystone chapter. In 2014, Iota chapter at Lawrence University earned the most improved distinction.

Excellence in Advising Awards in 2013 went to the advisor of the Akraia chapter at University of Vermont Maggie Rosa (University of Connecticut, 1965); Margot Smith (San Diego State University, 1965), who advises the Tolo chapter at the University of Washington; and Glenda Guyton (Carson-Newman University, 1974), who advises the Hypatia chapter at The University of Alabama. In 2014 Francisco Delgadillo (Texas Tech University,

2014); Amber Messersmith (The University of Nebraska at Kearney, 2000); Louise Douce (The Ohio State University, 1970); and Will Self (University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2014), who ably advise the chapters where they were initiated. Excellence in Advising Awards with Distinction in 2013 went to Dianne Portfleet (Hope College, 2011) and Sally Steadman (University of Wyoming, 1968) who, respectively, advise the Alcor chapter at Hope College and Azalea chapter at the University of South Alabama.

Distinguished Lifetime Members honored in 2013 were Bill Butler (University of Miami, 1990) and Jan Wissman (Kansas State University, 1962). In 2014 Betty M. Nelson (Purdue University, 1988) was the recipient. The Emerging Leader Award was presented for the first time in 2013 to Leslie Lang (University of California, Berkeley, 2005); Joseph B. Lee (Northwestern University, 2008); and Maureen Richmond (Purdue University, 1996). In 2014 Sonya Laddon Rahders (University of California, Los Angeles, 2011) was selected for this honor. Alumni Achievement Award winners in 2013 were Steven Biondolillo (Boston University, 1976); Julie Eddleman (Purdue University, 1991); and Marion Ross (San Diego State University, 1965). In 2014 David Coleman (Bowling Green State University, 1982); Glenda Earwood (Auburn University, 1973); and Kay Moore (The Ohio State University, 1964) were the recipients. Intentions to nominate for all alumni awards are due each year on November 15.

NATIONAL CONFERENCEBoth the 2013 and 2014 conferences were held at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel. The onboarding opportunities for new chapter leaders are intense, and the camaraderie among the 250-or-so participants is effusive. Advisor programming, orchestrated by national volunteers, was very successful in 2014 and will expand at the 2015 conference in Phoenix, July 31-August 2. In 2014 the National Office staff instituted the Conference Advisory Board to help with not only the execution, but the planning of the conference. The CAB proved to be very successful.

NATIONAL COUNCIL AND GOVERNANCEIn 2013 National President Caples passed the torch of leadership to National President Starling. Over the past several years the National Council, working with exceptional standing committee chairs, has refined the method of governance and moved all modifications to the Bylaws of Mortar Board, Inc. to a Special National Conference, which is held virtually in January each year.

MORTAR BOARD NATIONAL FOUNDATIONIn 2014, long-time president of the Board of Trustees, past National President Sally Steadman, handed the gavel to past National President Denise L. Rode (Northern Illinois University, 1971). In 2013 and 2014 the Board of Trustees of the Mortar Board National Foundation (MBNF) presented $34,000 and $35,500 in graduate fellowships to deserving members, after a very demanding selection processes. Applications for fellowships in 2015 are due March 1. The Foundation has been instrumental in supporting chapters’ individual projects and also much of the conference and all advisor development programming done by our Society. In 2013 the Foundation established two new endowed funds, the Barbara I. Cook Endowment Fund and the Sally Watlington Fund. In 2014 the Jane K. Smith Gift Membership Fund became fully endowed. Thanks to the fund founders’ generosity, anticipated named endowments from Denise L. Rode and Betty M. Nelson were begun in 2014. The Foundation depends upon members’ annual giving to add to endowed and operating funds. The Society is grateful to members’ generosity, and a list of donors for 2013 follows.

ADVISORSThe Society places extreme value on advisor acquisition and support. Advisors are essential to chapter success. Our signature advisor education program LEAD (Leadership Excellence and Advisor Development) was conducted in both 2013 and 2014 for 18 and 20 participants who rate this day-long program very highly. In both 2013 and 2014, advisors were assisted in attending LEAD and the national conference by the Mortar Board National Foundation Trustees’ Challenge initiative.
