It is with excitement that we begin the second quarter of the year. The first part of the year has been a success in part due to support from the community for several events. We have additional support for upcoming pro-grams that will enhance and

make the lives of our residents more productive.

I am proud of the work we are doing through our ROSS and FSS programs. These programs are vital to our residents and we are fortunate to have a strong and committed staff led by

Tena Hardy and Cecil Johnson.

This month we will hold another computer class that will provide our residents with the skills needed to help them find and retain employ-ment. We want to thank Franklin Synergy Bank for recognizing the value computer training can provide to our residents and agreeing to spon-

sor the program for the year.

Another resident resource that would not be possible without community support is the clothes closet. Thank you to Leadership Franklin especially Amy Kovar, Chuck Barber, Janine Moore, Dan Alexander and Jeff Smith for their work in making this a reality. Middle Tennessee Electric and Franklin Synergy Bank served as drop-off points for the community to provide

business clothing for our residents.

Parents have the opportunity this month to participate in a series of parenting classes sponsored by New Vision, Inc. that will help you nurture the relationship you have with your children. Parenting can be difficult and this class will help parents work through difficult issues or be prepared in the event an issue arises with their children. The pro-fessionals from New Vision, Inc. can help

you build a healthy and caring family.

As you can see much of what we do at the FHA involves teamwork and partnerships with other organizations and our community. These partnerships are a valuable resource that allows us to work together to better our FHA community and the larger commu-

nity in which we live.

As always, I hope you will take advantage of the programs being offered. These are designed to help you, our residents, work

toward self-sufficiency.

Tracey will be working with Michael Bishop and will be the face you see most often when you enter the

building.

Thanks to a grant from Franklin Synergy Bank, computer classes will once again be offered. You will learn basic computer skills in these classes which will help you search for a job and have a skill that is required by most em-

ployers.

The next class will begin at 9:00 am on April 15th and will continue on the 17th, 19th and 22nd in the FHA Community Center Redbud Room. The class size is limited so contact Tena Hardy at 794-1247, ext. 212 as soon as possible to reserve your

spot.

Ribbon Cut on New Clothes Closet

Leadership Franklin and the Franklin Housing Authority partnered to collect clothing and organize a new clothes closet for residents. The store officially opened on March 21st with a program and lunch hosted by Leadership Franklin. The clothing closet program is designed to assist residents that are working or looking for employment by providing appropriate clothing. Suits, slacks, jackets and other items are available. Residents that are currently employed or those that have earned credits may shop in the store. Contact Tena Hardy at 794-1247, ext. 212 or Cecil Johnson at 794-1247, ext. 207 for more information. Thank you to Franklin Synergy Bank and Middle Tennessee Electric for serving as drop-off sites for clothing. Also thanks to Marti and Liz Shoes for donating gift certificates.

To celebrate National Child Abuse Prevention Month, FHA is providing parenting

classes for parents to promote positive parenting skills that will focus on the well-

being of a child and understanding how to address children and youth in a nurtur-

ing home setting. Particularly in the field of child abuse prevention, addressing

child and family needs related to well-being is a critical part of reducing risks and

increasing safety and protective factors.

There are many aspects involved in raising a child such as the physical, be-

havioral, social, and cognitive areas of a child’s life. The parenting classes

will start April 4th at 5:30 at the FHA community center. We encourage all

parents to attend. Community service hours can be obtained by attending

these classes.

Childcare will be available with dinner and a door prize provided.

Resident Association Message

Fellow RA Members,

Thanks to the Franklin Fire Department for being our guest at last month’s Resi-dents’ Meeting. This month’s guest will not be announced. You will just have to be

there to see who it is.

As you know, the Residents’ Association Elections have been postponed until later this year. We urge all FHA residents living in Cherokee, Harpeth Homes, Johnson Circle and Natchez/Short Court to help strengthen our community by running for the Directorship in your areas. Through your leadership, you can help make positive changes in your areas such as improving living con-ditions for your neighbors, helping organize cultural and recreational activities and to foster a

sense of responsibility and community awareness among residents.

You don’t have to be a neighborhood Director to serve your community, all it takes is the willing-

ness to make changes that will improve your quality of life and the lives of people around you. You may have an idea for something positive in your neighborhood and we would love to help you with it or better yet, get your neighbors involved and make it happen. There are worlds of possibilities out there. It doesn’t matter what we do, just get out there and let’s do something,

something together.

Also we hope to start monthly Area Meetings in the weeks to come. Now, of course all meetings are open to all FHA Residents and we hope all residents will attend. Area Meeting will give each area the opportunity to speak on issues that matter to them, vote on things they want to see hap-pen in their neighborhoods. After all, we all live in different areas, so who better to know what is

needed in your neighborhood than you. So keep a look out for you area flyer, coming soon.

Together let’s change our community.

Youth at the Franklin Housing Authority are now participating through the ROSS/FSS pro-

gram in the First Tee program. This a great program that attempts to improve the self-

esteem of youth and instill a greater sense of purpose in their lives. First Tee is a golf pro-

gram founded by the son of Joe Louis, the most famous heavyweight boxing champion in

history. Joe Louis Barrow Jr. founded the First Tee program which has served 7.6 million

young people since 1997. The question is: Why the son of a heavyweight champ would be

involved in golf? Here is some history about his father.

On March 1, 1949, the longtime champion announced his retirement from boxing, stating

he intended to spend the rest of his days relaxing and playing golf. He had held the title

for nearly a dozen years (still a world-record reign to this day) and had made more title

defenses (twenty-five) than any other champion in any weight class in boxing history. His

professional record was sixty-one wins (fifty-three by knockout) with one loss. He attempt-

ed to make a comeback with his final time in the ring being in 1951.

The answer to the above question is that Joe Louis loved golf and was the first African –

American to participate in a PGA tournament. This was in 1952. That is one reason why his

son would also grow up to love golf and start the First Tee organization.

Easy 8 Can Soup Recipe

1 (15 ounce) can summer crisp or sweet corn 1 (10 1/2 ounce) can vegetable soup 1 (10 1/2 ounce) can Veg All 1 (15 ounce) can crushed tomatoes 1 (15 ounce) can sliced white potatoes 1 (15 ounce) can chili with beans 1 (15 ounce) can chili without beans 1 (15 ounce) can green beans 1. Dump all these cans in the crock pot. 2 DO NOT DRAIN ANY OF THEM! 3 Add some chopped up sausage if you like. 4 Heat it up on low for the day or high for three hours and serve.

The FHA ROSS program is offering interviewing classes on April 9th and 10th from 12-2 in the Redbud Room of the FHA Community Center. Interviewing skills are very important and crucial when you are trying to get that dream job. You want to highlight your positive qualities and avoid giving reasons for any employer to disqualify you. From the interviewing questions to what to wear is very important. For every resident that attends the interviewing class, you will have the opportunity to shop in the boutique for a suit. Also, you will have the opportunity to interview with local employers on the second day to

test your interviewing skills and maybe land a job.

There are only 6-8 slots for this class. If you are interested, please contact
