The effecT of LighT
Why We need natural light
According to the evolution theory, mankind has developed under sunlight. Sunlight is
therefore completely natural and we feel well in it. Lack of sunlight may lead to general
weakening and may support various conditions. A czech proverb says ‘A sunny day
keeps the doctor away’. 120 years ago most people used to work under open sky. on
the contrary, today we spend most of the day in buildings under artificial light. The quality
of artificial light, which can be defined as its similarity to sunlight therefore becomes
important.
light and darkness
The darkness as a counterpart to light is equally important. only in darkness the
melatonin, the sleep hormone, rises to regenerate our body, scavenge free radicals and
remove cells that run out of control. it is therefore important that we are not disturbed
by light at night. Neither the light itself, nor the darkness alone, but the rotation of these
polarities is what keeps us alive.
effect of light on health
The sight is one of the pathways light affects us. Scientists (p. 5) have been investigating
the effects of light on our nervous system and hormones since 1950’s. The major
breakthrough came only in 2007 when a new photoreceptor has been discovered on
human retina: the photosensitive ganglion cells. These are neighbours to rods and cones,
but their function is not visual. They project to central nervous system the information
whether it is a day or night. Biological master clock, located in our brains under the
crossing of optic nerves get synchronized by light and it measures our circadian
(approximately a day-long) rhythm of alertness and sleep. The photosensitive ganglion
cells are mainly sensitive to blue light and when there is enough of it, they signalize
the brain it’s a day, time to be alert and active. NASLi light approaches sunlight in this
manner as well.
Mall-illuMination
The illumination under open sky at noon can be 20-100 thousand lux. The illumination
in interiors is often hundreds to thousands of lux. This is just one per cent! Need for light
is growing as one is getting older. A pensioner needs about fifteen times more light than
a child for the same task. Activating effect of light on nervous system largely depends on
the blue component. Warm white contains about one third of blue compared to sunlight.
People are often disappointed with the quality of light of compact fluorescent lamps that
replaced the banned incandescent bulbs. NASLi provides much better colour rendering.
What light is the best
The ideal light is of course the sunlight. Artificial light may approach sunlight from different
points of view, for example in intensity, in tone similar to some phase of the day or in
rendering of colours. it is advisable to use more intense, colder light for work and less
intense, warmer light for rest. Before going to sleep, dim warm light resembling sunset,
containing minimum amount of the activating blue can be recommended.

Prof. fritz hollwich (*1909 - †1991)was a german ophthalmologist, professor of ophthalmology and a director of ophthalmological clinic.
he worked in Munich, Jena and Münster. in his inaugural dissertation form 1948 he distinguishes
a visual and energetic path of the sight apparatus. Three quarters of total light are considered to have the
energetic function and only one quarter to have a visual function. The energetic function is demonstrated
by observing the levels of hormones and other substances in the body. Blind patients who regained
sight after cataract operation helped him to demonstrate how vitality is enhanced and substances
are returning to their natural levels when light can strike retina again. Prof. hollwich observed stress
hormone levels decrease in his patients after he had daylight fluorescent tubes installed in his waiting
room. in this way he contributed to a better light in hospitals.
he is an author of many medical methods, more than two hundreds specialized publications and of
many books. There are ten or more editions of his Textbook of ophthalmology, which is even after sixty
years still considered to be one of the cornerstones of modern ophthalmology. Prof. hollwich cofounded
international ophthalmological Academy. in his works, he also refers to John ott, a pioneer of better
artificial light. from the work of prof. hollwich one can feel truthfulness, scientific verity, german
precision and courage to present things the way they are.
dr. John ott (*1909 - †2000)was an American camera man and self-learned scientist. While working on the time lapse pictures for
Walt Disney‘s Secrets of life series he found that some of the plants do not blossom and finally fade under
warm fluorescent light. Step by step he discovered that artificial light that lacks some colour can have
adverse effect on plants and animals. Large importance is given to the blue light, which is weak in warm
white light. ultraviolet light, which normally does not pass window or spectacles glass is also considered
important. Dr. ott demonstrated that a light more similar to daylight can soothe school kids, but also prison
inmates. in this way he demonstrated how different kinds of light affect our hormonal system that,
in the end, controls our body and our feelings. Dr. ott was the first to talk about mallillumination.
he is a founder of Time Lapse Research foundation, Bio ecological Research institute and ott Lite
company, which is one of the first producers of fluorescent tubes with rare-earth elements that enrich
the spectrum of the light produced, enhancing the colour experience.
Dr. ott published several books, several tens of articles, made several thousands of lectures. in 1957,
he was awarded a title of honorary doctor of natural sciences by Loyola university of chicago. John ott
is an example of great enthusiast, unlimited by school indoctrinations, a pioneer of better illumination
who gained respect of both laic and scientific public.
dr. franz halberg (*1919)
was a Romanian scientist living in uSA, founder of chronobiology, the science of time order in the living
realm. he coined the term circadian rhythm. Member of the german Leibniz society, five titles as
Dr. honoris causa.
Prof. helena illnerová (*1937),
czech biologist and physiologist, priority in discovery in melatonin secretion is controlled by brain’s
biological clock. ex-chairman of Academy of Sciences of czech Republic and the Learned society.
chairman of czech uNeSco commission.
Prof. russell grant foster (*1959), British neurobiologist and flunder of photosensitive ganglion cells on human retina. one year after this
discovery elected fellow of the Royal Society.
dr. norman e. rosenthal (*1950)is a Southafrican psychiatrist living in uSA. in 1984 he published an article on seasonal affective
disorder (SAD) and it‘s healing by phototherapy. Dr. Rosenthal is an author or coauthor of more than
two hundred specialized articles. he published four books: Winter Blues, The emotional Revolution,
St. John‘s Wort and how to Beat Jet Lag.
dr. Jacob liberman (*1947),is an American ophthalmologist and author of Light - medicine of the future and Take off your glasses
and See. he is an inventor of the eyePoRT eye training device and system.

Represents the content of activating blue components in a given light, compared to D65 daylight under the same illuminance. This component of light is
responsible for stimulating the brain. According to an article Light an Biological clock in czech magazine Světlo (Light), 6/2010, pages 56–58, iSSN 1212-0812.
Ri special indices of colour rendering
These provide more detailed information on rendering of particular colours. The first eight samples are tints used to calculate Ra. Rendering of saturated colours represent indices R9 to R12. in particular, R9 (deep red) is often poor in mainstream fluorescent lamps with red objects appearing darker and less colourful in such light.
gAi gamut area index
„A colour Space coverage index.“ Represents the verity of colours regarding their saturation. in Japan, it is often used along Ra. The average of Ra and gAi is one of the best predictions on how people will perceive the verity of colours of a given light source.
TcP correlated colour temperature
(overseas called ccT.) Represents the warm or cold tone (chromaticity) of white light. Defined as the temperature of the body emitting only thermal radiation most similar to the light of the given light source.

We consider the standards on luminaire compliance the legal minimum, and we believe these standards are too benevolent or ignorant of some issues.
for this reason we have developed our own stringent system for testing lighting products, which we call hLS.
capacitive coupling between leads conducts higher frequencies to the mains.
increasing distance lowers the noise transfer.
Decreasing the area enlaced lowers the noise radiated.
Ballast output voltage contains noise and higher harmonics.
inserting of an output filter lowers the noise radiated.

schools
The standard prescribes Ra ≥ 90 for art classrooms in art schools.
Dr. John ott found pupils being able to concentrate better, and
for a longer time, under fullspectrum lighting. Better visibility of
colours makes the classwork colourful and more interesting and
thus more efficient. The cold tone of light brings an uplifting feeling
of daylight.
kindergartens / nursery school
According to observations of John ott, children are more calm
and stay focused to a particular activity for a longer time under
fullspectrum lighting, this also applies to restless and hyperactive
children. vibrant colours are more likely to grasp the children‘s
interest.
households
Research papers from around the world, as well as our own
research and long term experience with our customers confirm
the activating effect of fullspectrum lighting to human biorhythms.
These natural daily cycles can be supported with the proper timing
of the right light, but they can also be disrupted by improper light
at an improper timing. fullspectrum light makes it easier to get
up and wake up in the morning. it also keeps us alert and active
during the day. on the contrary, in the evening it is better to
switch this activating light off and use only dim warm light about
60 minutes before going to sleep. This has a similar effect to
sunset: our rhythms will attune to relax, rest and regenerative sleep.
healthcare - treatMent rooMs
and surgeries
The standard prescribes lighting with Ra ≥ 90 for treatment rooms,
operating rooms and other healthcare venues. Diagnostics of
certain conditions largely depends on the staff ability to distinguish
colours, eg. yellow in jaundice and the lack of redness in hypoxia.
under general fluorescent lamp light (Ra 80) these colours may
be difficult or even impossible to distinguish. fullspectrum is a
synonym for high colour resolution.
healthcare - other rooMs
ongoing research shows cardiac patients feel much better,
recover faster and sleep deeper if they are exposed to an extra
portion of light during the day, compared to the general standard.
Best results are observed when blue-rich daylight-like light is
used. The experiments of prof. hollwich and Dr. Wurtman show
a decrease of the stress hormone in patients after fullspectrum
lighting has been installed in the waiting rooms.
APPLicATioN exAMPLeS
dentistry and dental laboratory
The standard prescribes lighting with Ra ≥ 90 for dentistries.
Tcp ≥ 6000 k is an additional requirement for dental laboratories. The
dentist needs to distinguish not only the colours of tissues, liquids
and tooth, but also the colours of various indicators and supportive
materials. implant colour has to be selected in a way that it would
mimic the neighbouring tooth colour in daylight. When the choice is
made under artificial light, this must be closer to sunlight, as much
as possible, so the patient would be satisfied with the result.
care/nursing hoMes
According to recent research, it is possible to enhance the quality
of life for the elderly and, at the same time, lower the expenses
on medication and night service, provided that the occupants are
subjected to intense blue-rich light during the day. People are more
lively and self-sufficient during the day, more likely to find joy in
some activity and get more tired, and finally sleep better at night.
artists and art restorers
Sunlight is an ideal light to judge matching colours, however, it is
not available all the time and in the required place. if general artificial
light was used for colour matching, the restorer could easily make
restorative colour appear matching, however, daylight would reveal
the difference. fullspectrum lighting is a great choice for colour
matching.
night-shift
During work at night, it is vital that workers keep alert during the
whole workshift. Blue-rich fullspectrum light activates the human
nervous system, thus keeping us alert and more active. it has been
proven that more intensive cold light can lower error rate, accident
rate, combat absenteeism and increase productivity even in daytime
hours. fullspectrum lighting provides better perception of colours,
making the surroundings more pleasant and vivid.
quality control checkPoints
Quality control, checking colour proofs in multicoloured print,
sensory evaluation in industrial varnishing or the evaluation of
colours of different materials or chemical indicators are largely
dependant on the proper distinguishing between colours. Again,
sunlight is an ideal light, but it is not available every time and
everywhere. The standard prescribes artificial light with high verity
of colour rendering, which is offered also by fullspectrum lighting.

We encourage everyone interested in trying the products of healthy Light to follow the following
procedure that has been verified by many and leads to satisfactory results. We recommend starting
with little changes to provide enough time to get used to the new light. it would be a pity to install an
expensive luminaire just because it was bought without consideration. The need for light varies with
seasons the year and different living things need different light during the day. Need for light is also
affected by age, children need less light than the elderly.
We at NASLi provide professional consultation and design of interior lighting in offices, households
and production floors with focus on colour quality and circadian activation.

A great improvement can be as simple as changing a fluorescent lamp, installing a kitchen lamp or
using a stronger bulb on the toilet or lavatory. A living room can get more life with a new desk or floor
lamp. We perceive up to 90 % of information by sight. comfortable illumination is therefore followed
by safety, alertness, productivity and quality of workmanship as well as wellness and vitality.
The level of illumination can be measured using a lightmeter. in this way we can check whether
the light is strong enough for the given task. There is no standard for household lighting, but
recommendations can be found in literature and eN 12464-1 standard can be used as inspiration.

fullspectrum sunshine simulator helps to overcome seasonal affective disorder (SAD), depressions
induced by lack o sunlight, feelings of anxiety, lack of energy, fatigue, mood swings or decreased
performance.
fullspectrum sunshine simulator is easy to use. Just spend 15 to 30 minutes with the luminaire in
your visual field, about 1 meter distance. it is not required to stare into the light, you can comfortably
read, enjoy your hobby or work with a computer.
NuBeS luminaires are designed for minimum electromagnetic trace. New generation electronic
gear provides optimized current waveforms and low electromagnetic emissions. Lamps are
connected to the ballast with shortest possible route and the interconnection pattern is symetic and
additional filters are used to minimize electromagnetic interference. These luminaires can be used
as a stationary sunshine simulator.
how to overcome winter depression – SAD and winter blues (book in czech) provides one of the
most complete collections of information about SAD so far published in czech language. Readers
will find how SAD occurs, who is likely to experience it, what are the symptoms and how it can be
treated using light teraphy or other efficient methods and much more.

Many of the luminaires are shipped with intelligent
ballasts, that allow two different wattage lamps to
be installed in the same luminaire (Stella, gaudium
and some Pompa types). T5-ho high output
lamps, can be exchanged for T5-he high efficiency
lamps with lower power and lower luminous flux.
in this way, you can choose the most beneficial
configuration, keeping in mind efficiency and
maintained illumination at the same time.

Luminaire design is a creative process of seeking the balance between technical, functional and
esthetical sides of the product. Besides the classical technical parameters, we in NASLi work with
activating effects of light on human nervous system. Works of professor hollwich, a discoverer of
the association between quality of light and stress, have been a great inspiration for us in NASLi.
This is why we are nearing artificial light to sunlight.

These are special fullspectrum pendant luminaires for medical, dental,
veterinary, laboratory and similar workplaces. Thanks to an electronic
ballast, the light is flicker-free and more eye-friendly than classical
lamps using magnetic ballasts with a starter. The high colour rendering
index ensures true undistorted colours, as well as a better resolution
of fine detail, so you will feel much less eye fatigue after a whole day‘s
work. The optical systems used ensure a good even illumination of the
work area, with minimum glare.

The work of prof. hollwich (p. 5), eminent ophthalmologist, confirms both biological importance of
fullspectrum light as well as essential nature of certain colours and results of their deficiency in everyday life.
cool white fluorescent lamps with poor colour rendering were banned in germany thanks to his research.
Personal experience is the best way to understand the difference of NASLi light.
Mercury in fluorescent lamp is a source of concern and questions. Mercury is liquid at room temperature
and it evaporates, contaminating the air. The vapour of this heavy metal is dangerous and neurotoxic.
A fluorescent lamp contains about 1/100 of the mercury contained in a medical thermometer. As the lamp
is sealed, the vapour is locked in the tube. Proper recycling is vital so the lamp mercury is never released
to air. in case of lamp break: open the windows and vent the room for at least 15 minutes. keep outside
the room during this period.

amalgam (an alloy of mercury with one or more metals)
makes dosing of mercury to lamps more precise, easier
and safer. Amalgams make controlled evaporation
of mercury during lamp operation possible. in case of
amalgam lamp break, the amount of mercury released
to air is much lower than in lamps with liquid mercury.
Mercury does not evaporate from amalgam at room
temperature. Amalgam lamps need more time to reach
full luminous flux and they may experience difficulties
while starting at low temperatures.
Torches, candles, paraffin lamps, gas lights,
incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lamps, arc lamps,
LeDs… the sources of light are constantly
developing, while their goal stays the same: to imitate
sunlight in place and time where it is not available.
fluorescent lamps and especially LeDs make bring
a new way of nearing to sunlight: not only the intensity,
but also the chromaticity can change during the day,
as inspired by sun on sky. This live – biodynamic –
light brings a motivating variable element to static
interiors while respecting our day cycle more closely
than any constant light.

Special phosphors with rare earth elements (lanthanides) are used in nasli fluorescent lamps. A Mixture of
these compounds emits light across the whole visible range, producing a rich white light that contains every
colour. for the sake of acceptable decreases in efficacy we get light that enables us to distinguish small colour
nuances, much like that in daylight. This is not possible under mainstream fluorescent lamps.
Lamps with excellent colour rendering (Ra ≥ 90) are required by eN 12464-1 standard for a long list of venues
and visual tasks in healthcare, dentistry, dental laboratories, art schools, print industry and quality control stati-
ons. our customers report great experience with our products in offices, schools, kindergartens, nursing houses,
photographic and art studios, DTP stations, fine mechanics and electronics workplaces, chemical and biological
laboratories. colour enthusiasts use NASLi lamps at home as well.
The lamps conform to all requirements on safety and performance, eRP and RohS directives and can be used
in existing luminaires without any modifications. T8 lamps can be used with electronic or magnetic ballasts.
electronic ballasts are preferable as lamps last longer, consume less energy and eliminate flicker, being more
comfortable on the eyes.

consume less energy and provide more comfortable flicker-free light.
our mission is to develop, produce and market light sources which are as close to daylight as possible. We would like to offer more visual comfort to
everyone who relies on artificial lighting. Light quality is our primary intention and our priority is to provide high quality products that are durable and
energy efficient. The lamps conform to all requirements on safety and performance, eRP and RohS directives and can be used in existing luminaires
