The first work to boldly examine the widespread misdiagnosis and controversies that arise from our current diagnostic system, it serves as a wake-up call for parents and professionals to question why our mental health and education systems are failing our brightest children.

lives of children and American public schooling. Elizabeth Farrell was the founder of the first ungraded class in U.S. public schools, the developer of the basic principles and concepts under which special education still operates, and one of the founders of the Council for Exceptional Children. Good Blood, Bad Blood: Science, Nature and Myths of the Kallikaks J. David Smith and Michael L. Wehmeyer

Published in 1912, The Kallikak Family was a pseudoscientific treatise describing generations of illiterate, poor and purportedly immoral Kallikak family members who were chronically unemployed,

“feebleminded,” criminal, and, in general, perceived as threats to ‘’racial hygiene.’’ In the 100 years since publication of The Kallikak Family, the woman Psychologist Henry Herbert Goddard called “Deborah” has remained in the shadows of history, known only by the name forced upon her. Using new source material, Good Blood, Bad Blood tells her story in its entirety-in dramatic, narrative style-for the first time. It is a landmark publication in disability studies, vital to understanding of both this specific American tragedy and the history of efforts to manipulate the human population.

CEC Publications Program

CEC is expanding its book publications program to better meet the needs of its members and other professionals in the field of special and gifted education.

Starting in 2013, you can expect to see more books—in print and non-print media, including e-books—published and distributed by CEC on a wider variety of critical topics that address the needs of students and their teachers . The CEC publications program is integral to CEC’s success in achieving its mission as a professional association .

CEC’s niche in the publishing world is a very specific one: CEC publishes and distributes books and other products designed to help practitioners work more effectively in the classroom to meet the academic and non-academic needs of students with exceptionalities—in other words, professional development materi-als . CEC’s publishing focus encompasses: discussions and applications of proven teaching methods and strategies; curricular and instructional guides; professional

development materials, including both pre-service and in-service materials; techniques for working with particular populations of students; assessment materials and strategies; analyses of emerging trends and issues; policy materials; and other topics that address effective teaching and administration . Although CEC is not a commercial textbook publisher, many of its products are used as supplementary materials in undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation programs .

In addition to CEC’s own print and non-print publications, the Council also distributes, on a very selective basis, books and non-print media published by commercial publishers, as long as they address the critical concerns and professional development needs of special and gifted educators . In that catalog, you will find a selection of the newest of these publications of the highest caliber .

If you are interested in learning more about the CEC publications program, or if you are interested in sending us a book proposal, please go to www.cec.sped.org/Publications/How-to- Publish-with-CEC or call 1-888-232-7733 .
