Joy Johnson is a Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia with a long standing interest and leadership in the field of gender and health. She was appointed Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health commencing January 2008. In this role she works with the Canadian gender, sex and health research community and stakeholders to identify research priorities, develop research funding opportunities, strengthen research capacity, build partnerships and translate research evidence to improve the health of Canadians. Dr. Johnson has a productive program of research focusing on health promotion and health behaviour change. Drawing on a broad array of theoretical perspectives her work explores the social, structural and individual factors that influence the health behaviour of individuals. A major thrust of her work focuses on sex and gender issues in substance use and mental health. She has obtained millions of dollars in research funding from national funding organizations and has published over 160 papers in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Johnson’s work has been recognized with numerous awards including the UBC Killam Research Prize. In 2010, she was recognized as one of British Columbia’s 100 Women of Influence.

Cynthia C. Harper is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the School of Medicine at University of California, San Francisco. She is a faculty member of the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health. Dr. Harper received her doctorate in demography and public policy from Princeton University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on contraceptive technology, access to care and policy change for improved reproductive health care in the US and abroad. She has conducted research on emergency contraception that supported clinical and national policy changes in the US. She is currently working to address unintended pregnancy in the U.S. through improved training and education for providers and at-risk women on high efficacy contraceptives.

Dr. Mary Stephenson is internationally renowned for her expertise in recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). Her training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, reproductive immunology and genetics has facilitated her ability to link clinical care to the laboratory. Dr. Stephenson has led several randomized controlled trials to assess therapeutic interventions for RPL and infertility, collaborating with Dr. Mary Ensom, Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC, to optimize dosing of medication during pregnancy. Dr. Stephenson also has long-standing collabo-rations with geneticists at UBC to study the genetic basis for miscarriage, and identify specific miscarriage genes which could lead to developmental defects in early pregnancy.

In 2004, Dr. Stephenson moved from UBC to the University of Chicago, where she established the largest Recurrent Pregnancy Loss program in North America. Since 2005, she has been rec-ognized as one of the Best Doctors in America®. In 2010, Dr. Stephenson (Co-Editor) published “Early Pregnancy,” the first textbook to embrace a multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and management of recurrent pregnancy loss. In 2011, Dr. Stephenson completed the presti-gious Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program. In July 2012, she assumed the position of Department Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Dr. Stephenson is an Associate Editor for the journal “Human Reproduction” and is on the Editorial Board for “Fertility & Sterility.” She is a leader in the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), where she provides expert opinion on recurrent pregnancy loss. Dr. Stephenson is clearly one of the top researchers in the field and is highly sought after as a speaker for national and interna-tional meetings on reproduction.

1. To assess the impact of the age restriction in the U.S. on over-the-counter access to EC for various populations, including teens, undocumented women, low-income women, and general populations in need of EC.

2. To identify areas of expertise of pharmacists in the U.S. in their expanded profes-sional role with reproductive health services.

3. To evaluate potential contributions of pharmacists to women’s health and wellbeing if oral contraceptives were to be available OTC.
