WELCOME

This past year marked the begin-ning of many proj-ects that will forever change the face of our central city and take Downtown Atlanta to the next level. From the Atlanta Streetcar to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, 2013 fostered a re-surgence of energy and excitement throughout the community. On behalf of our organization, I am proud to be an integral part in help-ing partners from both the private and public sectors bring to fruition years of work and planning. LEADERSHIPAs I reflect on my last three years as Chairman of the CAP Board, I am honored to have been a part of an organization that has worked to maintain and strengthen Downtown Atlanta’s vibrancy and eco-nomic vitality for the past 72 years. We have entered into a new era of development and investment in the communi-ty that promises to bring exciting changes and additions to the city’s core. As I look towards the future, I am confident that CAP’s continuing efforts will result in the creation of a 21st-cen-tury Downtown that residents, workers and visitors alike will be able to enjoy as the heart of the Atlanta region for decades to come.

The significant accomplish-ments of the Atlanta Down-town Improvement District have been paramount in the surge of investment and revitalization that Downtown is currently experiencing. From the Ambassador Force and Clean Team to invest-ments in public spaces and transportation alternatives such as the Atlanta Streetcar, ADID’s work will continue to impact the lives of millions of residents and visitors each year.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORTATION The Atlanta Streetcar construction, including 2.7 miles of track, more than 240 power poles and three traction power substation units, began last March. Twelve platforms for streetcar stops, the vehicle maintenance facility and an Atlanta Streetcar mural were also part of the progress.

CAP/ADID’s Downtown Green Source program worked with a robust 2013 client base to provide alternative transportation options. More than 9.5 million vehicle miles traveled were eliminated by single occupant vehicles, more than 45,000 discounted monthly transit passes were sold and more than 10,600 Downtown commuters were registered in Georgia Commute Options incen-tive programs.

In July CAP/ADID kicked off the Downtown Atlanta Parking Assessment project to review the state of parking in Downtown and develop solutions for managing public perception.

PUBLIC POLICYCAP worked with city leadership to draft and define a new street-vending ordinance that will allow up to 31 vendors to operate in Down-town, and the Atlanta City Council passed the ordinance in early November.

CAP provided support for the fourth Annual GeorgiaForward Forum, bringing leaders to Atlanta to network and offer innovative approaches to solve our biggest policy challenges.

GeorgiaForward led the authorship of the state’s first-ever Civic Health Index (CHI). To announce the publication, CAP hosted a media event in Macon and traveled across Georgia to present the report.

The inaugural class of Young Gamechangers, an annual GeorgiaForward program bringing together the state’s brightest young leaders, completed work re-envisioning the future of Americus and Sumter County by identifying missed economic opportunities and presenting ideas for attracting and retaining young people, entrepreneurs and retirees.

Founded by CAP Members, Partner for Hope works to connect those feeding in public with appropriate social service providers. Following the 2013 formation of a Task Force, the effort gained the attention of media outlets and was granted the support of a LEAD Atlanta Cohort Community Project team.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CAP/ADID supported the creation of Sweet Auburn Works, an organization intended to implement preservation-based economic development. CAP published its Downtown Investment Map to spotlight $577 million in public and private investment in Downtown between 2012 and 2014. ADID’s Ambassador Program, along with the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, purchased a new mobile information cart to serve Downtown. In 2013, ADID’s Ambassador Force helped more than 900,000 visitors, workers and residents, providing 5,000 escorts to destinations within the DID, 700 vehicle-related assists and more than 100 medical assists. The Clean Team worked to beautify Downtown, removing more than 1.4 million pounds of debris and providing 24/7 cleaning services and ongoing landscaping. ADID installed a bocce ball court and table tennis area in Woodruff Park and expanded the exercise area and ATL Playground. In November, 20,000 daffodils were planted as a part of a worldwide living Holocaust Memorial. CAP supported the work of the Downtown Devel-opment Technical Advisory Committee to ensure the successful revitalization of South Downtown Atlanta in the context of planned investments in nearby large projects. With the City of Atlanta and the State Historic Preservation Office, CAP managed a federal Historic Preservation Fund grant to complete the Downtown Contemporary Historic Resources Survey to document contemporary historic resources built from 1935 to 1985.

MEMBERSHIPCAP launched Downtown Partners to engage small businesses, nonprofits and individuals in support of Downtown through CAP initia-tives. Enrollment in the program, which offers Partners many of the benefits enjoyed by CAP Members at annual dues levels of just $250 or $500, began in June and attracted 19 new supporters in its first six months.

CAP exceeded its 2013 Membership goal and attracted 29 new Members, representing a wide variety of sectors, including media, law, real estate, nonprofit, entertainment and hospitality. More than 240 companies and organizations are now taking part in the work of CAP as Members or Downtown Partners, a near 20 percent increase in the total number of supporters over the past two years.

More than 140 CAP Member representatives are now involved in Membership Councils organized around four major focus areas: Eco-nomic Development, Infrastructure, Marketing & PR and Quality of Life. Each Council met at least quarterly throughout the year, affording Members the opportunity to network with peers that share a passion for Downtown and provide feedback to CAP’s staff. Since their inception in 2011, several major CAP/ADID ini-tiatives, strategies and public policy positions have had their geneses in these meetings.
