2013 S EASON PREV I EWWith his largest squad ever competing during the

2013 season, head coach Joe Jaketic will try to use the Vikings’ depth to their advantage and contend for a top spot at the Horizon League Championship. The squad is made up of six returners including one senior, two ju-niors and three sophomores, and eight incoming fresh-men.

Junior Tori Holt is the top returner for the Vikings this season, owning six of the top-40 5K times in the past eight years. Holt was CSU’s top finisher during all seven races she competed in last year, and posted a career-best 5K time of 19:13 at the 2012 Horizon League Championship (Oct. 27).

Junior Katie Webb and sophomore Ashley Lydic also enter the season with top-50 5K times, and were both top-three finishers for the Vikings during all nine races last year. Webb recorded a career-best 5K time of 19:53 at the Otterbein Invitational (Sept. 22), while Lydic set a personal-best with a time of 19:54 at the Friendship Invitational (Sept. 15).

Ashley Berlin is the lone senior on the squad this year, returning for her final season after posting a career-best 5K time at the league championship last season. Berlin and Webb will serve as co-captains for the 2013 campaign. The final two returners are sophomores Amanda Kalain and Megan O’Keefe, who will be trying to build on a solid first year of collegiate running.

The freshmen on this year’s squad include Brit-tany Carson (Olmsted Falls, Ohio), Amelia Holt (Mount Vernon, Ohio), Shannon Kruger (Westlake, Ohio), Sarah Mallow (Blissfield, Mich.), Erin Pavick

(Cortland, Ohio), Alanna Shamrock (Cortland, Ohio), Jesse Stallings (Dover, Ohio) and Ashlyn Woods (Mentor, Ohio).

The Vikings will open the 2013 campaign at the end of August, and will compete in seven races before the Horizon League Championship which will be hosted by Youngstown State on November 2. The final race of the season for Cleveland State will be the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, which will once again be held in Madison, Wis. on November 15.

Entering his ninth season at the helm of the cross country team, Joe Jaketic will have his work cut out for him, as he continues to build the Viking program into one of the top teams in the Horizon League. A Cleveland State graduate in 1972, Jaketic has never been able to shake his enthusiasm for the Vikings, and that has truly carried over into his head coaching career.

Two years ago, Jaketic guided the squad to its best season in program history, culminating with a fourth place finish at the Horizon League Championship. CSU’s fourth place finish at the 2011 championship marked the highest finish in program history.

Over his eight years at the helm of the cross country team, Jaketic has continued to build the program into a Horizon League con-tender year-in and year-out. He has worked hard on the recruiting trail to bring in student-athletes that not only succeed on the cross country course, but also in the classroom since he has a personal philosophy that academics come first in his program.

During his tenure, 28 student-athletes have earned John Konstantinos Ath-letic Academic Honors, including eight who earned the accolade during all four years of their career. Since the 2005 season, the Vikings have earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors five times (2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008), been named Cleveland State’s ‘Best of the Best’ three times (2011, 2010, 2006) and won the Academic Progress Rate Award five times (2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008). Two of Jaketic’s recruits have also been named Cleveland State Valedictorians, as Brittany Elmlinger earned the honor during Fall 2012 and Kelly Zaleski picked up the award during Spring 2013.

Prior to becoming head coach, Jaketic served as the equipment manager for CSU athletics. He retired from that position in December of 2008 after 37 years. Jaketic ran cross country at Maple Heights High School and spent time running at Ohio University before transferring to run cross country and track at Cleveland State.

While a student at CSU, Jaketic was a member of the Viking cross country team and spent two years in the equipment room as a part-time job before being offered the equipment manager position in 1972.

Kate Patton is in her fifth season as an assistant cross country coach at Cleveland State. Patton was an assistant coach at St. Joseph Academy H.S. during the 2007 season, coaching the team to an 11th place finish at the OHSAA State Cross Country Meet. While at St. Joseph’s, she provided weekly nutrition presentations with topics including meal timing, calcium, iron and hydration. She also counseled athletes on appropriate pre-and post-run meals and hydration, while also analyzing runners three day meal records to assess if they were meeting the estimated nutrition needs.

A 2006 graduate of the University of Dayton, Patton earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Dietetics. She is currently completing course-work toward a Master’s of Education in Exercise Science at CSU. In addition, Patton is serving as a clinical dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic and is a member of the Left Ventricular Assist Device team. She completed a dietetic internship at the Clinic in 2006-07, working through a program that was comprised of 26 weeks of clinical, nine weeks of food service, four weeks of community and four weeks of sales and marketing. Patton is a member of the American Dietetic Association, the Cleveland Dietetic Association and the Cleveland West Road Run-ners Club. A two-time qualifier and participant in the Boston Marathon, Patton has also competed in the Columbus and Georgia Marathons.

Allison Lowe enters her second season as a volunteer assistant coach at Cleveland State, following a standout career in a Viking uniform.

Lowe was a four-year letterwinner at CSU from 2007-2011, and was the team’s top finisher during 29 races throughout her career. As a senior, Lowe led the Vikings to a fourth place finish at the Ho-rizon League Championship, their highest finish in program history.

Lowe, who graduated from CSU in 2012 with a degree in physical education, finished her career with eight of the top-10 5K times since 2005 - when Joe Jaketic became head coach.

After earning a masters degree in exercise physiology from Cleveland State last year, Lowe now teaches physical education at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin in Chardon, Ohio.
