I- LETTER FROM THE CHAIR:
4
2013 encompassed many changes in Health Care. Working together with 283 faculty members, nearly 52 residents and several hundred Technologists & Technicians, nurses, administrators, and staff who make up the department, we have made rapid strides toward achieving those goals. This year we achieved an overall annual productivity of 5,521,930 tests, which could not have been reached, without our dedicated manpower (1,215 employees). With the appointment of new Heads of Laboratories, Heads of Units and Laboratory Directors and with the creation of an Executive Committee, the Department now has the infrastructure it needs to continue its path.
All through 2013, we continued a steady expansion in our three major missions; Laboratory Services, Teaching & Training and Research Activities. In the Laboratory service arena, we continued to push ahead with the implementation of Quality Assurance System at our Lab Branches. The New ER Lab at the New ER Hospital has opened and in addition to a new ER Blood Bank. The Japenese Lab underwent major changes and developments in its infrastructure & we expect it to further blossom in 2014.
Teaching & Training activities also remained very strong. Our goal is to train Clinical & Chemical Pathologists who will make a difference whether they chose a career path in academic medicine or in clinical practice. In addition to the pre– Master & pre-Doctorate teaching & training programs we now offer regular training to the Egyptian Fellowship Board Students in addition to 2 weeks condensed summer training program to undergraduate students. We continued the partnership we formed last year with the Training Program in Regenerative Medicine (TPRM) of the University of Toronto in Canadawhich introduced Regenerative Medicine in Cairo University. TPRM offered regular weekly lectures from September 2013 to April 2014 that will be webcasted from Toronto and were displayed at an auditorium in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) in Kasr Al-Ainy. This was the a first building block for the Regenerative Medicine Unit that was inaugurated in 2013 that will hopefully start running by mid 2014.
In the Research arena, several research projects were funded by the faculty under the roof of the 2-5yr plan for the Research activities of the Department, which involved all 4 specialties of the Department (Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology and Chemistry. As for our Faculty publications, over 50 articles were published in international Journals, several of which were in the high impact journals. Our yearly ClinChem Conference legacy was held in April 2013 under the title Is Regenerative Medicine a hope or hype? That was held at the Learning Resource Center at Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine. Another source of pride was the work of our Faculty Staff in a collaborative initiative with the Egyptian Society of Laboratory Medicine in organizing ESLM 2013 Conference, which was held at the Cairo International Conference Center in April 2013. In summary, the Department remains strong and undergoing carefully planned incremental growth, reflecting both our role in academia and in Laboratory service. With the opening of the the new Labs and units we look forward to gradual recruitment of several more staff and also to working closely with all of our other colleagues in the Faculty and Hospital to build our research, teaching and clinical enterprise in a fashion that melds with programmatic directions of the University as a whole. Frequent error messages received from instruments.
Improper temperature control.
Non convenient laboratory circulation between outpatient clinics and main laboratory.
Limited small secretarial area inconvenient for IT introduction.
Constructions;
Compartmentalization of units leading to more effective temperature control through
split air conditioning unit.
Dividing the outpatient sampling unit and creating a new storage area.
Creating a separate secretarial area with introduction of the IT system.
Relocation of the autoclaving and media preparation unit of the microbiology section
in a separate area instead of inside the main lab.
Construction of a hematopatology unit.
New instruments;
Hematology;

The activities noted below showcase a few of those activities carried out by our Faculty:
1. Awareness & Training sessions in Infection Control all across Kasr Al-Ainy Hospitals. 2. Awareness & Training sessions in Hospital Safety Measures. 3. Annual Laboratory check-ups for employees who are prone to Hospital acquired
infection. 4. Laboratory Testing as a part of the almost monthly Medical Convoys by Kasr Al-Ainy
