What is College for Kids and College for Teens?College for Kids (CFK), through the School of Continuing Education (SCE), is a hands-on enrichment program for children ingrades K5-8, who have high academic potential, motivation, a talent, or an interest in computers, math, science, languages,creative arts and humanities. Now in its 33rd year, the program consists of one and two-week classes taught by UW systemfaculty or highly qualified and experienced instructors. All programs at UW–Milwaukee provide an "academic edge." Class size is limited to 16 students unless otherwise noted.

College for Teens (CFT) is the same great program as CFK but for students entering grades 9-12. (*Classes may include grades 6-8.)

Please note, Kindergartners must be five years old by June 10 and must have prior five-days-a-week school experience. When registering for CFK or CFT, use Fall 2013 grade levels.

Program Information

When are Classes?Classes are Mon.-Fri., June 17-Aug. 9 andare held on the UWM campus, unlessotherwise noted. Specific class dates/timesare included in course descriptions.

Registration Policy Once your child/teen is registered there areno refunds or transfers. Refunds are madeonly for classes cancelled by CFK/CFT.

How Do I Register?Registration opens each year on Jan. 15.Call, fax in your registration, or go online tosce-kids.uwm.edu. (Mailed registrations addseveral days to the registration process andlessen the likelihood of availability in yourdesired class.) If Jan. 15 falls on a holiday orweekend it will open the next business day.

Confirmation of RegistrationWithin two weeks of your registration, yourreceipt and parental permission forms aremailed to you for completion and return. Allparticipants are encouraged to have theirown health insurance as limited secondaryaccident insurance is provided by the University.

Before and After Care• Early Morning Drop-Off: 7:30-9am - $25/week or $45/two week session• Late Afternoon Pick-Up: 4-5:30pm - $25/week or $45/two week session

We offer two options to make things easier for kids and parents. For a minimal charge,supervised care is available before and after the program day. So come early or stay late,however you must sign up for the whole week.

Before Care (7:30-9am) and After Care (4-5:30pm) will meet in the Union Terrace Room.Chaperoning child to or from class is included in this fee.

• Please note: College for Kids/College for Teens only supervises students while they are enrolled in a class or are registered for before andafter care. Students enrolled in back-to-back classes or before and after care will be chaperoned to their next destination. No extendedsupervision (longer than the 30 minutes between consecutive class times) is available between 9am-4pm for those not enrolled in classduring any part of the day.

• Please have your child bring a copy of this schedule to class each day so we can make sure they get to the correct class.

Adventures in Aquaponics!

aquaponics / ˈækwəˈpɒnɨks / is asustainable food production system thatcombines a traditional aquaculture (raisingaquatic animals such as snails, fish,crayfish or prawns in tanks) withhydroponics (cultivating plants in water) ina symbiotic environment.

Have you participated in an aquaponicsprogram or project at school and WANT TOLEARN EVEN MORE? Find out about all thebehind-the-scenes science that is makingaquaponics front page news in the field ofscience and technology! This two-weekworkshop will take your aquaponicsknowledge to the next level!

The summer workshop will be held Monday - Thursday from 9am-1:30pmfrom July 22 - August 1. Topics may include:

A newintroduced mussel called the quagga is the invader.

REAL CHALLENGE: Imagine you and yourteam of investigative reporters arechallenged to determine who ecologicallywins, the zebra mussel or the quaggamussel and to tell the story to others. To dothis you and your team must mount aninvestigation using video, digital imagesand your knowledge of science to searchthe Milwaukee River, the River Basin, andLake Michigan to locate those dreadedinvaders, and identify the abiotic and bioticfactors that support them. Check InOn your child’s first day, check in at theUnion Terrace Room, where you will makesure you’ve filled out all the properpaperwork. You will then receive yourCFK/CFT drawstring backpack andwristband. (Please note: you need to do thisfor your first class only. The lines may belong, so please arrive 30 minutes early.)

Pick Up – Drop OffYou may pick up or drop off at the UnionCircle, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., or inside theUnion in the Terrace Room (SW corner on the ground floor).

The instructors will bring their students tothe Union Terrace at the end of class time.You must pick your child up within 15minutes of the end of class (i.e. if class ends at 11 am, pick up must be no later than 11:15am). Students will be allowed towait for their ride either inside at the UnionTerrace or outside at the drive-up. (Pleasemake sure your child knows where theyare meeting you.)

You will be charged $7 for each 15 minutesyou are late. (i.e. 4:16-4:31 would be $7,4:32-4:47 would be $14 and so on). If yourchild is not picked up within one hourCFK/CFT will contact the UWM police. Yourchild will not be allowed to return to classesuntil the fee has been paid.

Only students who have a signed parentalconsent form indicating that they can leaveunattended will be able to leave without anadult. If your child is to go home on theirown, make sure you sign that form. Thesestudents will be given “orange” wristbandsto wear throughout the program.

WristbandsWristbands are given out on the first day of a session and are to be worn each day of the program. If your child is enrolled in morethan one session, he/she can receive a newband at the beginning of each session.Please bring the old wristband back in orderto get a new one. It is your responsibility tomake sure your child wears the wristbandeach day. This is the way we identify ourstudents. The colors tell the staff whatprivileges the child has, such as leavingcampus unattended or not being included inpictures. It also verifies that your child is inour program. Your child will not be allowed to participate in class unless he/she has thewristband on.

MealsLunch and snacks are not included. Feel free to send food along with your child.Only students with orange wristbands canpurchase food on campus.

Drawstring Backpacks!All participants will receive a FREE CFK/CFTdrawstring backpack! Backpacks are handedout on the first day when you drop off your child.

What Not To BringPlease do not bring games, toys, tradingcards, electronic devices and other similarmaterials to classes unless the instructor has requested you to do so. CFK/CFT is notresponsible for lost, broken or missing items.

Disciplinary InformationDisruptive students are taken to the CFK/CFT office and their parents are notified.Continued disruption results in removal fromthe program.

Children with Special ConcernsIf your child has special needs or requiresmedication during camp please contact usbefore enrolling. This will ensure that we canaddress all of your concerns.

Other Important InformationDo not leave your car unattended in theUnion Circle, you will be ticketed by campuspolice and there is nothing CFK/CFT can doabout it! A parking ramp is available just tothe east of the Union Circle.

If students are enrolled in back-to-backclasses they will be supervised in the UnionTerrace room, unless you have given thempermission to be unattended.

ScholarshipsNeeds-Based: To be eligible for a limitednumber of needs-based scholarships, thestudent must be eligible for free or reducedlunch program. Needs-Based recipients willbe notified by phone the 1st week of May.

DPI Pre-College Scholarship Program:Applicants must be going into 6th grade orabove, have a 2.5 grade point average incore courses and be eligible for the free orreduced lunch program.
