Season Outlook

Season Outlook The EKU women’s soccer team reached new heights in 2012, posting the fi rst winning record (10-7-3) in the eight-year history of the program, achieving program marks for wins (10), conference wins (6), goals (22), assists (18), points (62) and shots (253) and going undefeated at home for the fi rst time ever (8-0-1). The Colonels also earned their fi fth consecu-tive berth in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, the longest active postseason streak in the conference. It was a historic season; however, it did not produce the ultimate goal of an OVC Championship. Enter Melissa Barnes. Barnes was hired as the program’s second head coach on February 13 and is charged with leading EKU to that elusive conference title. Barnes, a native of Prospect, Ky., made trips to the NCAA Tournament as an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington and Furman and she hopes to bring that winning touch to Richmond. Aiding her in that pursuit is the talented and veteran roster she inherit-ed. EKU will boast its largest senior class ever in 2013, and nearly all seven members of the class played key roles in the success of 2012. Leading that group of batt le-tested upperclassmen are Nikki Donnelly and Lauren Fant, both of whom earned fi rst team All-OVC honors last fall. Donnelly was one of the most feared goal scorers in the league last season, burying a program-record seven goals and dishing out two assists while sett ing team records for single-season shots (62) and career goals (15) in the process. Fant, meanwhile, delivered another big season on the outside of the EKU defense, playing the fourth-most minutes on the team (1,692) while using speed and aggression to get forward and score three goals, two of which were game-winners. Junior Emily D’Italia is also back. D’Italia was named fi rst team All-OVC in 2012 after establishing herself as the top center back in the league, playing all but two minutes on the year while helping the Colonel backline record fi ve shutouts and stifl e op-ponents to just 1.05 goals per game. EKU has been picked to fi nish fourth out of 11 teams in the OVC; however, with a deep, talented and hungry roster and a head coach with a nose for winning championships, the Colonels could be a dangerous team and a tough out come postseason play in November.

Goalkeepers From 2007-10, Stephanie Lynch was a rock for EKU in the net. After Lynch graduated, though, EKU has had to start a freshman goalkeeper each of the last two seasons. It appears that will change in 2013. Sopho-mores Erika Wolfer and Samm Melton are both back with a year of experi-ence under their belts. Wolfer started 17 games last season and notched four shutouts, allowing just 1.17 goals per game. Melton started three games while Wolfer was injured and fi lled in admirably, allowing only two goals and recording a shutout versus Tennessee Tech. Wolfer and Melton will be pushed by the arrival of Shawn Zellers, a rangy, athletic keeper out of Bethlehem High School in Bardstown.

“This is a very athletic team,” Barnes said. “We’re trying to mix in a litt le more soccer knowledge to help them use that athletic ability, but the tools are defi nitely there. If we learn to use those tools, we could be really dangerous. The following is a position-by-position look at the 2013 Colonels.

Defenders The EKU backline will have to deal with the graduation of Deja Ten-non, a crafty, athletic outside defender who played in more games than any player in program history. However, the personnel that is returning should ease that loss considerably. Fant will be joined on the outside by junior Paige Larkin, another experienced, athletic defender who has started all 40 games in which she has played since arriving at EKU in 2011. Sophomores Katie Bright and Merrissa Vault and freshmen Sarah Franklin and Mackenzie Nichols will also compete for time on the outside. D’Italia, who Barnes called “an anchor in the back,” will start at one center back position. D’Italia provides a physical presence on the Colonel backline but also has a nice touch with the ball, as evidenced by her program-record four assists last season, all of which came off corner kicks. The other center back position could be fi lled by senior Katie Collar, who redshirted 2012 but who Barnes referred to as “experienced, technical and a leader.” Freshman Mikayla Brillon, a California native, could also see time in the middle of the backline.

Nikki Donnelly will look to crown her career with a stellar senior season in 2013

Midfi elders “Everyone has experience in the midfi eld – which is nice,” Barnes said. “We can’t really go wrong with any of them, it’s just a matt er of fi nding the right mix of players to put out there.” That mix will include four seniors – Tess Akgunduz, Janelle Coates, Britt any Nomady and Kristan Paynter – as well as junior Devon Saini, sophomores Mikala Ferguson and Taylor Perkins and freshman Randi Schweitz er. Nomady and Paynter both started 17 games last season and both were extremely active on the off ensive end. Nomady, who is tied for second-all time in assists at EKU, fi nished second on the team with 35 shots, while Paynter scored the game-winning goal against confer-ence foe Eastern Illinois. Ferguson really come on late in 2012, scoring a goal and notching three assists all against conference foes to earn OVC All-Freshman honors. Coates, Saini and Perkins, meanwhile, have scored eight career goals between the three of them, while Akgunduz is a shrewd passer who can link up the fi eld. “We hope to use our midfi elders a litt le diff erent this year,” Barnes noted. “We want to possess more through them.”

Forwards As a group, Barnes referred to the members of this year’s att ack as “ath-letic, dynamic and pacy.” Donnelly leads that group. That native of Cincinnati should continue to be one of the top off ensive players in the league as she looks to build on her seven-goal performance from last year. Her scoring prowess was particularly on display during a September game versus conference and in-state rival Morehead State, when she scored two goals in the fi nal eight minutes of play to lead the Colonels to an improbable, come-from-behind 2-1 victory. Joining Donnelly up front will be juniors Kaylynn Brown, Ashley Ryan and Whitney Wallace, sophomores Dani Cant and Amani Thomas and freshman Nichelle Ryan and Cassie Smith. Brown may be the wildcard of the group, as her 2012 season was cut short by a knee injury right before conference play began. Before the injury, though, Brown was emerging as a true off ensive threat, scoring goals against Wright State and College of Charleston. Thomas notched two assists during her freshman campaign, one of which set up Donnelly’s game-winning goal versus Morehead State, while Cant scored the game-winner versus Transylvania in 2012. Barnes noted that Nomady might also see time up front.

Melissa BarnesMelissa Barnes

Head Coach • 1st Year at EKU (0-0-0)

Alma Mater: Furman, 2002

Melissa Barnes is beginning her fi rst season as the head coach of the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team. Barnes arrives in Richmond with a track record of winning champion-ships. She was an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington from 2008-12 and an assistant coach at her alma matt er, Furman University, from 2005-07. The Prospect, Ky. native helped lead both programs to the NCAA Tourna-ment. “Melissa personifi es the qualities we want in the leader of our women’s soccer program,” Acting Director of Athletics Simon Gray said. “She will recruit and develop elite student-athletes who are positive representatives of our campus and our community. Academic success culminating in graduation is a priority for Melissa and our athletics department. She also has a proven record of winning championships. Melissa is a person of in-tegrity focused on providing an inspirational student-athlete experience.” Barnes was most recently an integral factor in building the UNCW women’s soccer program into a powerhouse in the Colonial Athletic As-sociation. Working under head coach Paul Cairney, the 2008 CAA Coach of the Year, Barnes guided the Seahawks to unprecedented success during her fi ve years in Wilmington. In 2009, UNCW went 13-8-1 and reached as high as No. 3 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic Region rankings before winning the CAA Tourna-ment and earning the program’s fi rst-ever berth in the NCAA Tourna-ment. In 2012, the Seahawks compiled a record of 12-7-3 and fell just short of a second NCAA appearance, losing to Hofstra, 2-1, in double overtime in the CAA title game. Barnes was a part of 49 wins during her fi ve years at UNCW, and she coached 28 All-CAA performers, eight CAA All-Tournament selections and one CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player; however, Barnes also demanded excellence from her players away from the fi eld. The Seahawks won an NSCAA College Team Academic Award all fi ve years of her tenure and posted a team GPA of 3.40 or higher from 2010-12. Before her successful stint at UNCW, Barnes was a key factor in con-tinuing the winning tradition at her alma mater, Furman. As an assistant coach / goalkeepers coach at Furman from 2005-07, Barnes helped guide the Paladins to a 20-6-4 Southern Conference record and a spot in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. She also mentored 17 All-SoCon performers during

that two-year period. The South Dakota women’s soccer team was also a benefi ciary of Barnes’ winning touch. Barnes was an assistant coach / goalkeepers coach at South Dakota in 2004 and, during that one season, the Coyotes posted a program-best record of 15-6 and made their fi rst-ever appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Barnes was a proven winner before entering the coaching ranks, though. She was a four-year starter at goalkeeper for Furman from 1998-2001, earning All-SoCon honors three of those seasons and posting the 10th-best Goals Against Average (0.67) in the country as a sophomore in 1999. During her four years in the net at Furman, the Paladins compiled a record of 66-21-1, won three SoCon titles and made two NCAA Tourna-ment appearances. As a prepster, Barnes led South Oldham High School to Kentucky state titles in 1995 and 1996 and she holds the KHSAA career shutouts record with 56. Barnes received a bachelor’s degree from Furman in 2002 and earned a master’s degree from East Carolina University in 2010.

What Others Are Saying About Melissa Barnes …

“Melissa has been a huge part of our success at UNCW. She was an inte-gral part of our fi rst ever CAA Championship and NCAA tourney appear-ance. In addition, she helped recruit excellent student-athletes at UNCW throughout her fi ve years with our team. Recruiting and coaching are the two pillars to success in college sports. Melissa Barnes is good at both of them. She has a deep understanding of the type of players that her team will need and she has the natural talent to coach and motivate student-athletes. I know that the EKU team will develop as soccer players and as people under her guidance. Moreover, they will have a positive and rewarding experience in the process. EKU has picked a winner in Melissa Barnes.” – Paul Cairney, head women’s soccer coach at UNCW

“What a fantastic hire for EKU and a wonderful opportunity for Melissa. As a player, Melissa was a “coach on the fi eld,” leading by example and in words. Her time as an assistant under Andrew Burr at Furman and Paul Cairney at UNCW has been well spent in preparation for this moment. She has the work ethic, man management skills, and soccer pedigree to bring EKU soccer success on the fi eld, in the classroom, and in the com-munity.” – Brian Lee, head women’s soccer coach at Louisiana State University

“Melissa’s energy, leadership skills and soccer knowledge will make her the perfect fi t to be the new head coach at EKU.” – Andrew Burr, head women’s soccer coach at Furman University
