One of the best ways to discover this beautiful part of the world is to let the locals show you around. APT have been offering expert guided tours here since 1927, and are widely considered as the destination experts, making sure you get the full experience of New Zealand and all of its natural and cultural wonders. What’s more, APT offer two levels of touring in New Zealand, so they can cater to suit all holiday budgets.

Driving the North and South Islands with an expert driver and tour director in tow means that you not only get to see all the incredible highlights that any visit to New Zealand must include – the big-ticket stops such as Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Fox Glacier, Queenstown and Milford Sound – but also unforgettable little hideaways and interesting spots that you would never have seen on your own. So often, it’s these unexpected gifts that really make a holiday.

One of our absolute favourites is APT’s New Zealand Getaway tour, a 15 day journey through the highlights of the ‘land of the long white cloud’. Starting in Auckland, head north to the Waipoua Kauri Forest to see the legendary Tane Mahuta, a giant Kauri tree they call the ‘Lord of the Forest’. The aquatic playground of the Bay of Islands is next, with a dolphin-watching cruise through Cape Brett and the famous Hole in the Rock, such a fabulous place to see these playful mammals away from the hordes of tourists.

Pass through the underground limestone caverns of Waitomo Caves, magically lit by thousands of tiny glow-worms; it’s hard to imagine where on earth you could experience anything similar.

Even famous spots like Rotorua can be experienced in a much more in-depth, unique way on an APT Tour. A two-night stay in Rotorua will have you immersed in the fascinating Maori culture with a

delicious Hangi feast, cooked with hot stones in an earth-filled pit under the ground, followed by a traditional song and dance performed by locals. Expect an unforgettable evening.

End your stay in the North Island in Wellington, including a visit to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (translated as ‘the place of treasures of this land’). Ride the cable car to the heights of the Kelburn lookout for those all important photo opportunities across Lambton Harbour to Oriental Bay.

Of course, the joy of a journey through New Zealand is the abundance of jaw-dropping scenery to admire. On the South Island you’ll be driven through some of the world’s most extraordinary countryside and coast. Heading along the west coast you’ll see Franz Josef Glacier, and on your way to the stunning Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park you’ll traverse the Milford Road, which is renowned as one of the world’s best alpine drives.

Queenstown is of course famously the home of thrill-seeking and adrenaline rushes, but it’s also a fabulous place to simply enjoy good food and memorable top night out. A thriving international community and abundance of youthful energy makes Queenstown the perfect place to relax and have fun.

With a perfect balance of day touring and free time, travelling with APT will let you experience all there is to offer, from majestic mountains and awe-inspiring coastline, to wondrous fiordland.

There really is so much to see and do in New Zealand, and on an affordable tour with some of the world’s top travel experts, you can be sure to experience everything this magnificent country has to offer.

A Holiday Experience like no other

A lot of travellers see a holiday in New Zealand as a once-in-a-lifetime event, as though you need to spend half your life saving a small fortune before hopping on the plane. But the surprising thing about travelling to New Zealand is that to do it properly, it really doesn’t have to cost you the earth.

Western Australia

Discover anextraordinary destinationAs one of the world’s largest states, it can be hard to grasp just how much Western Australia has to offer its visitors. From the wild Kimberley region in the North-West, to Perth’s cosmopolitan beachfront lifestyle and the gourmet escapes of the South-West, this is a state rich in diversity and extraordinary experiences. With so much to see there is no better way to discover Western Australia’s secrets than by planning a great Aussie road trip.

Perth, an Extraordinary Place

Fly with Qatar Airways, voted the ‘World’s Best Airline’, and experience their unrivalled signature 5 star service to take you to Perth in style. Qatar Airways operates daily flights from London Heathrow and Manchester via Doha to Perth.

1Ride a camel into the sunsetAustralia, believe it or not, is home to the world’s largest population of wild camels. In Broome, a resort town in Western Australia’s tropical North-West, you can hop on the back of a omesticated camel and take a sunset ride along Cable Beach.

2Explore the world’s best-kept secretThe Bungle Bungle Range was not discovered until 1983, when it was stumbled upon by a film crew and 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of its discovery. The range is now a World Heritage-listed site, and was featured in the 2008 movie Australia. They are located within the Purnululu National Park.

4Feed the wild dolphins of Monkey MiaWildlife can be notoriously elusive; however this isn’t the case for the dolphins of Monkey Mia on the Coral Coast. For over 40 years bottlenose dolphins have been rocking up here daily, typically approaching the shore up to three times a day, making an interaction almost guaranteed!3

Take a trip to the Moon...in your hire carThe Pinnacles Desert might only be 270km north of Perth but it feels like another planet. Spend just a few hours at the site and you’ll almost certainly find yourself fantasising about piloting your own spaceship or becoming a Jedi Knight. Best times to visit are at sunrise and sunset.

5Swim with the world’s biggest fishThe world’s largest fish, the whale shark, congregate at Ningaloo Marine Park to chow down on the local zooplankton, giving snorkellers and divers a chance to experience the thrill of looking them in the eye as they mooch by, propelled by a gentle swish of their supersized tail fins.

The Cook Islands

Sharing an easy, laidback lifestyle, colourful song and dance and a genuine care for others – this is what defi nes the people of the Cook Islands. Shaped by their traditional island heritage as well as a colonial European infl uence, Cook Islanders have managed to preserve much of their old way of life. This is authentic Polynesian culture at its best, and it’s a lifestyle the locals will warmly and enthusiastically encourage you to share in.

Perfect for escaping the colder weather and getting away from it all, the Cook Islands are a remote paradise where time seems to slow down. If you dream all year long of stretching out on powder-white beaches and bathing in warm tropical seas, you might fi nd your perfect holiday here. Living on what the locals call ‘island time’ means easing into a more relaxed pace, and taking time to enjoy the simple pleasures of life – sunshine, good company and of course, great food.

Your adventure begins on the island of Rarotonga, home to the Cook Islands’ capital city, Avarua – a typical welcome will see you being serenaded by Jake Numanga, a local musician who welcomes every fl ight into the Cook Islands by singing local songs as you wait by the luggage carousel, before you head to your beachside resort. It’s possible to travel round the island in under an hour, meaning wherever you stay, getting around on the island’s circular road is simple and quick.

The island is encircled by a colourful reef, providing clam waters perfect for snorkelling and kayaking, but the real hidden gems are often hidden inland. Travel on a 4WD day tour to the centre of the island to fi nd rainforest interiors fi lled with fascinating wildlife, hidden waterfalls and peaceful streams. At the markets in Avarua fresh produce such as seafood, coconuts and tropical fruit is unsurprisingly plentiful, but be sure to try local specialities such as wild roasted pig or breadfruit stew. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, sea cucumber is considered a delicacy – served with lemon and cooked green banana, it makes a very popular dish.

Neighbouring Aitutaki is home to one of the most stunning lagoons on the planet and truly is “one of the places to see before you die”. Catch a 40

minute fl ight from Rarotonga, making sure you have your camera to hand for views of the almost triangular atoll, before landing on a runway with turquoise waters at each side.

No stay is complete without a snorkelling tour, the shallow waters home to a myriad of marine life. Reward your exertion with a BBQ lunch at One Foot Island, complete with its very own post offi ce from which you can send those all important postcards back home. Aitutaki off ers a great range of accommodation, from great value beachfront rooms up to the luxury of overwater bungalows, but regardless of where you stay, the Cook Islanders’ warm hospitality is in abundance.

Of course, it’s not all about sunbathing and feasting. There is so much to do in the Cook Islands that your relaxing beach holiday might just turn into a full-blown adventure trip. Discover the island of Atiu, which translates to ‘land of the birds’, a raised volcanic island protected by a deep reef with mighty cliff s rising from the sea, around half the size of Rarotonga. Atiu has a long history of growing coff ee, visit one of the smaller plantations to try the rich tastes - which benefi t from fertile volcanic earth and swampy ground. Local celebrity Birdman George will take you on a guided tour to see some of the endangered species which inhabit the island, before exploring limestone caves - some of which are used as ancient burial places, and others that are perfect for a refreshing swim.

Our number one reason to visit the Cook Islands is that they’re still relatively undiscovered in the travel world - retaining pristine natural beauty and charm. With no buildings allowed higher than the tallest palm tree, you’ll never come across a view spoilt by a high rise hotel. It’s easy to experience all this for yourself - an ideal stopover point on your Australasian journey and a true ‘barefoot luxury’ holiday.

Air New Zealand connect to Rarotonga from the UK, via Los Angeles, making it a perfect stopover point en route down under.

Before, after or even between matches you can leave the city behind and soak up the experiences for which Australia is known for.

Head to Cairns and the Tropical North, where the Great Barrier Reef and Rainforest meet; or into the dusty Red Centre to enjoy the ancient Aboriginal culture. One of the most popular options is to pick up a campervan and discover Australia at your own pace.

If you have visited Australia before you can also take advantage of the regular fl ights into the South Pacifi c, and include a truly relaxing Island-style holiday. Fiji, the Cook Islands and Samoa are all easily accessible from Australia, and Austravel can help incorporate any of these into your Ashes trip.

It’s not often you get the opportunity to interview a Rock legend, so when the opportunity arose to speak to Francis Rossi Austravel couldn’t say no! Here he is speaking to Katie and Naomi our Marketing & PR Managers about Status Quo’s movie ‘Bula Quo’ which was fi lmed in the beautiful setting of Fiji.

Q. You’re one of the greatest all time Rock bands with more than 118 million records sold, what gave you the idea to do a fi lm after all these years?

Well when we did Coronation Street a few years ago we got all enthusiastic about the acting side of things and had a look at an initial fi lm script but it went no further. Then, early last year the fi lm idea was raised again with a revised script and we thought ‘great let’s do it’!

Q. Tell us about the fi lm and the role you played?

The fi lm is about a criminal played by Jon Lovitz, who is running a scam which involves the Chief of Police. The band and I then witness one of their dodgy dealings and we’re chased after by their guys for witnessing what we did. It’s a bit like a Carry On fi lm, as it’s a bit silly. The band and I got to play ourselves, it’s probably the closest people will have seen to our real personalities. You’d think playing ourselves would have been easier but we still felt we could have done some scenes better.

Bula fiji!

We had to watch our language a bit as we’re aiming for a young certifi cate, so we had to say things like ‘crikey mate let’s get out of here’ instead of what we would in real life.

Q. How was it working with Jon Lovitz, Craig Fairbrass and Laura Aikman?

I got on extremely well with Laura, I could adopt her as a daughter…if I was younger I would probably be in love with her. She was just delightful. And of course Craig, he’s done a lot of those macho fi lms, he was great to work with and got some good tips from him.

Q. What was a typical day like on set?

We were up at 5am every morning, on set by 7am and fi nishing by 6pm…I don’t think I’ve ever been so tired in my life! We did a couple of weeks of fi lming during

the day and then switched to nights, it was like having jet lag all over again. Whilst we were out there I would be ready to go to sleep by about 8pm, it was so nice to feel desperate to go to sleep. Compared to the end of gigs it can take a good two or three hours because you’re still hyped up from it, but after a day of fi lming we were just whacked. I think I need to get back out there as now I’m back I don’t seem to be sleeping as well as I was.

Q. Had you ever been to Fiji before?

No, I’d never been anywhere like it, I love the sub tropical climate it was so lush and green. I was watching a programme last night that was based somewhere that reminded me of Fiji and it made me just want to be back there, I just really enjoyed being in Fiji. I didn’t think I would, but I did, and the people were wonderful.

I got on extremely well with Laura, I could adopt her as a daughter…if I was younger I would probably be in love with her. She was just delightful. And of course Craig, he’s done a lot of those macho fi lms, he was great to work with and got some good tips from him.

Q. We were up at fi nishing by in my life! We did a couple of weeks of fi lming during

Q. How long were you in Fiji for?We were out there for just over a month, any other movie would have been out there for 2-3 months so we had to get in and get out. We just had to get on with it and make the most of the limited time we had out there.

Bula Fiji

Bula fiji!

Q. Where did you stay out there?

We were in a very plush area of the main island of Fiji, and stayed in a couple of diff erent hotels, I think it was the Radisson Blu, Intercontinental and First Landing. They were all lovely hotels.

Q. How was the food in Fiji, and did you have a favourite Fijian dish?

I had the best sushi I have ever had out there, and there was also a Thai Restaurant at one of the hotels we were staying that I had to keep going back to for more as their food was delicious. I would love to go back out there for a week or so just to eat in all the various places and then come home again.

Q. There is a well known drink in Fiji known as Kava that is known to numb your tongue – did you try it?

That’s an understatement, your head goes out to lunch and your tongue goes numb. I didn’t try it, I’m a good boy these days, I can’t go anywhere near it at all, there were a lot of people trying it around us though. It was very popular with the locals.

Q. Did you get much time to relax and actually take in any excursions in-between fi lming?

No we didn’t have a lot, but did manage squeeze in a trip on the sugar train that travels up the Coral Coast where we saw the Sigatoka Sand Dunes. We also got to take a Captain Cook cruise to the Mamanuca Islands, the islands had stunning white sand and we could have gone snorkelling, but we didn’t on this occasion, it was lovely and relaxing. To be honest what I really like to do to relax is to play Patience on my iPad.

Q. How did you fi nd the locals (Fijians)?

They are just so incredibly friendly, every time you see them they say ‘Bula’ and they have it on everything, there’s Bula water, Bula shirts, Bula everything! We didn’t know that it meant ‘Hello’ to start with. No matter where you go the maids say it to you, people who work in the hotel, kids who run by whilst we were fi lming, everyone says it as they pass, then one day some guy went ‘Bula Bula’, which sparked an idea for a song.

Q. I understand you were writing a new album whilst you were in Fiji, what inspired you the most out there?

It would have to be the people for sure. There was a song we had from the previous album that just didn’t quite work or fi t, but when we were in Fiji I thought I could rearrange it a little and it worked! It was like it was meant to be. Also one of our drivers, who’s name I can’t remember…I think it was snake or something like that, but he used to say diff erent phrases to us like ‘Karalarger’ which I also managed to put into a song. I’m fi nishing some more of the album today, and it’s due out the week before the movie in July.

Q. Where did the name of the fi lm come from?

Well, the fi lm was initially named ‘Care Factor Zero’, but

that was before it was rewritten. Whilst we were out there fi lming we decided it just had to be ‘Bula Quo’ because everything out there was around ‘Bula’ so felt that was a better fi t.

Q. How was making a fi lm compared to performing in front of thousands of Status Quo fans?

It obviously took us out of our normal comfort zones, but as we got into it we adjusted, with Rick and I not having done this before the director was great at getting more out of us. He would always give us pointers on how to make things better and improve the scenes and saying ‘well done that was great’, it felt like we were boys at school again being praised for doing something right.

Q. It looks like you and the band have a busy year ahead touring the world and your tours are pretty much sold out everywhere?

We always do yeah. We have cut down to around 120 shows a year, we used to be up to 160 shows. It’s just what you do, and we’re old school if you’re not working then you’re in trouble. The fact we are still wanted does kind of feed the ego and makes us feel current. It’s funny, we were doing some training in Hastings to do a diving scene in the movie, and one of the camera guys asked us ‘what are you guys doing these days’ and if we were still doing gigs – we weren’t too impressed.

Q. Will Status Quo ever slow down, and what are your plans for the future?

I’d like to slow down a little, but it’s not that easy. But loads of other things are

happening, with our Reunion Tour we are quite unique in that we are the only rock band in the world that was two bands and the original band can still be together as no one’s dead.

Q. Do you still get that nervous feeling before gigs? It’s not nervous; you get a bit of adrenalin like a slight rush. But not nervous, otherwise your heart rate goes up so you don’t talk correctly. It’s normally after sound check time I want to go and do it immediately, I can’t stand the wait as I just want to get out there and perform. I can’t watch myself though, I don’t like to know what I look like when I perform.

Look out for ‘Bula Quo’ OUT July 2013!

Q. Would you do a fi lm again? It was just so much fun we would love to do another one; but that will depend on how the fi rst fi lm does.

A day in the life...

Nomad Safaris is a multi-award winning company with a successful 25-year history transporting visitors in to the New Zealand backcountry. With a wide portfolio of tour options including Lord of the Rings and pioneer history tours by 4WD vehicle, quad bike safaris and guided walks, there is something to suit every traveller.Owner David Gatward-Ferguson not only oversees the running of the company but will also seize the opportunity to jump behind the wheel and share his passion for this land and it’s rich history.

Over to David to tell you more…There really is no typical day in the life of a Nomad guide – that’s the beauty of it. Every day is different; we’re flexible with our tours and try to tailor each one to suit the passenger, and of course every passenger is different. Even the scenery is ever-changing. With the variety of tours that we offer, one day you might be hiking in the mountains, the next you are four-wheel-

driving through a rushing river or even hopping in a helicopter on the hunt for Hobbits!

Over twenty years of doing these tours and I still never tire of the landscape and meeting new and interesting people every day. It’s a joy to show off our wonderful area and watch peoples’ delight in just getting back to nature.

The release of the Hobbit at the end of last year has brought a renewed interest in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and even after 10 years our Safari of the Scenes locations tour continues to be a top seller. Visitors love to be able to put themselves in the movies; even if you’re not a fan of the films the landscape alone is captivating and full of fascinating stories and legends.

One aspect of the tours that everyone enjoys is gold panning, it’s really hands on and connects guests with the gold mining history of the region. We so love this aspect of our tours, our daughter has become a world-class gold panner and has represented NZ in the Australasian Gold Panning Championships – a sport that many people will not even know exists!

The spirit of Nomad Safaris is offering small group tours that are fun, informative and get the clients in touch with their surroundings. This means no coaches, no crowds and, no microphones! Just the guides, their personality and their renowned Kiwi hospitality.

Wild Victoria

Wild Victoria!Victoria is nicknamed Australia’s ‘Garden State’, and it is home to some of the country’s best National Parks, including the Great Ocean Road, the Grampians and the Yarra Ranges. This means that there is an abundance of indigenous wildlife to spot – including kangaroos, koalas, wombats and echidnas.

The spectacular coastal drive east from Melbourne is one of the country’s best kept secrets, taking you through historic towns, surf beaches and the added opportunity to spot the local wildlife is an added bonus. One of the wildlife ‘hotspots’ on this route is Phillip Island, normally seen as a daytrip option from Melbourne to watch the famous Little Penguins each evening as they make their way up from the sea, but you can easily fi ll a few days here as there is plenty to do and see.

expertly maintained and serviced.

Discover New Zealand

with ApolloDriving in New Zealand is very easy, and being considerably smaller than Australia, means that a great deal can be experienced during an average two week stay. Our suggested itinerary makes use of the fact that Apollo have depots in Auckland and Christchurch, allowing you to explore both North and South Islands easily.

North IslaNddays 1-10: Journey from Auckland to explore the volcanic coastline of the Coromandel. Take a glass bottomed boat cruise, experience the unusual hot water beach, or marvel at the ancient Kauri forests. From here follow the Coromandel coastline before heading south towards Rotorua, the thermal heart of the North Island. As well as the renowned Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve take time to visit Paradise Springs, Skyline and the Agrodome. A tip here is to prepurchase the Executive pass – which includes entrance to all these and more. Another ‘must do’ is to experience the Maori Hangi. A short drive from Rotorua takes you to Taupo, with a suggested stop at the Orekai Korako Thermal Reserve en-route. Once at Taupo visit Huka Falls, where any adrenalin seekers should take a spin on the jet boats. Head onwards and west to the Hawkes Bay region, famed for its wine, food and scenery. Enjoy the famous Art Deco town of Napier and nearby Hastings. Great options are the ‘On Yer Bike’ cycle wine tour, or the Gourmet Odyssey for those who prefer to take things a little easier. Follow the Classic New Zealand Wine trail to the Wairarapa area, with its charming small towns and plenty of fine wine to sample. Victorian Greytown is a great stop point, with delicious pastries, chocolate and other goodies to indulge. Head over the Rimutaka Hills to Wellington, New Zealand’s vibrant capital city – visit the interactive Te Papa museum, take in the breathtaking views at Mount Victoria, or kiwi-spot at Zealandia.

south IslaNddays 11-14: Take the Inter-Islander ferry across to the South Island from Wellington across to Picton. We recommend pre-booking the morning trip across to give you plenty of time to reach Nelson, and also upgrading to the Premium Lounge to allow you to sit back and enjoy the views. With Nelson as your base explore the Abel Tasman National Park. Activities available to try out include kayaking, sailing or sampling the famed walking tracks. For a more leisurely day join a catamaran cruise or a sailing adventure. Head towards Blenheim and along the sweeping East coast to the small seaside town of Kaikoura. The coastline attracts an abundance of marine wildlife, including the Giant Sperm Whales, Hectors Dolphins and soaring Albatross. The Whalewatch cruise is highly recommended, and worth pre-booking to ensure you don’t miss out! Follow the winding road south through the Canterbury region to Christchurch where the campervan can be returned. Alternatively if you do have more time, head inland to the thermal spas of alpine Hanmer Springs, and towards the glacial west coast regions.

Samoa’s calling...

Samoa’s calling…

Landing into Samoa’s capital city, Apia, you’ll discover beautiful architecture, colourful churches and countless food stalls – with markets home to a variety of fresh home grown produce. Wander the seafront and stop to enjoy a few Valimas, the locally produced beer, while watching Samoans catching a game of Kirikiti (cricket).

1. Robert Louis Stevenson’s homesteadVisit the restored colonial homestead of Robert Louis Stevenson above the village of Vailima for an informative tour of his mansion with a local guide. Known to the Samoans as ‘Tusitala’ or ‘teller of tales’, the famous author spent the last five years of his life in his adopted home near to Mount Vaea. For those feeling energetic, head to the top of a 45 minute trail where you’ll find the stunning views over Apia and the bay.

2. Alofaaga Blowholes Head to south-west Savaii to see the roaring blowholes

close to the village of Taga. If you time it right you can join a local throwing coconuts down into the holes, before shooting up high into the air and out to sea.

3. Volcano Drive into the centre of Savaii and to Mount Matavanu, a volcano which last erupted in 1911, leaving lava fields scarring the earth down to the shores of the island. Meet local celebrity ‘crater man’ who will walk you to the rim of the crater for breathtaking views out over the western villages.

4. To Sua Ocean Trench There are few places in the world to equal the stunning sight at Lotofaga village in Upolu. To Sua translates as ‘big hole’… and essentially that’s what it is! With a 30 metre ladder down onto a swimming platform, it’s not somewhere for those with a head for heights, but you certainly won’t find a more serene and private swimming pool anywhere else in the world!

5. Lalomanu Beach With a host of hidden treasures it’s easy to get carried away with adventuring into the unknown, however make sure you include a visit to the stunning beach at Lalomanu. Explore the turquoise waters by kayak, or just choose to kick back with a beer watching the sun set, before a Samoan siva dance show with burning flames performed by the locals.

Often referred to as the “Treasured Islands of the South Pacific”, the ten Samoan islands are blessed with abundant waterfalls, high rainforests and of course, some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the world. With a landscape this diverse, it’s little wonder Samoa is emerging as a must-see destination.

““I would defi nitely recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for a tour to take them off the beaten track, and if you like mucking in and getting involved.

Why I Love... the Northern Territory

I was a bit apprehensive about doing the 5 Day

Adventure Tour to begin with as I’m not

into camping and normally like the

comfort of hotels. However the trip

was amazing! If you want to experience

Kakadu and Litchfi eld you need to maximise your

time in the area, rather than doing day trips opt for an escorted tour - as it is three hours from Darwin to get to Kakadu. Our tour had 16 people that varied in age from 15 to 65 years old. Our tour guide, Karl, was extremely knowledgeable and friendly – a typical Aussie and very down to earth. The tour was ideal for people who are looking for something more than just the standard tours, and want to be taken off the beaten track. The tour goes to some of the most remote waterfalls such as Twin Falls and Jim Jim Falls, the only way to access them is by a 4-Wheel-Drive. For accommodation we stayed three nights in permanent tents, and one night in standard tents under the stars – absolutely amazing, great opportunity to star gaze. In the evening when we got to each site it was time for everyone to muck in and cook tea – there was always plenty of food to go around and some of the meals were better than I can cook at home!!! Any dietary requirements can be met so aren’t a problem if they are advised at the time of booking.

DAY 1 - Early start to join the tour in Darwin. We were all introduced to everyone and Karl our tour guide gave us the overview of what we would be doing each day etc. It took us around 90 minutes to get to our fi rst stop Litchfi eld National Park. Here we had our fi rst opportunity for a refreshing dip in Wangi Falls and Florence Falls. After lunch in Batchelor we headed to Mary River Wetlands for a boat cruise where we saw a variety of wildlife as well as our fi rst sighting of Crocodiles or as our tour guide Karl would call them ‘snapping handbags’. Tonight we stayed at a permanent camp site Cooinda, which was going to be home for two nights. The site had a swimming pool, bar and shop - so plenty of facilities.

DAY 2 - Today we headed out to Ubirr to see the Aboriginal rock art. We had a short walk over the rocky terrain so that we could take in the views over the Nardab fl oodplains, where we had an amazing 360 degree view over the fl oodplains…simply breathtaking. After lunch we headed to Barramundi gorge where we had a 30 minute walk before cooling off in the plunge pools.

DAY 3 - This morning we realised why we need the 4WD vehicle, as it was a very bumpy journey to visit Jim Jim and Twin Falls. Both of these waterfalls are some of the most remote sites in Kakadu National Park, but worth the drive. We went to Jim Jim Falls fi rst, once there it took us around 40 minutes to walk through the bush and along the creek over rocky boulders to the base of the falls. Whilst there was no water over the top of the falls, due to it being dry season, the sheer size of the falls was amazing; we then had another chance to have a swim in the cool natural water. After Jim Jim Falls we went across to Twin Falls where we had a short cruise through the gorge to the falls, the falls were so remote and so beautifully peaceful. We then headed to Warradjan Aboriginal

Cultural Centre in the afternoon to learn about local Indigenous culture. Our accommodation for this evening was camping under the stars at Gunlom Falls which is located in the South part of Kakadu. Camping under the stars was an amazing experience, I don’t think I have ever seen the stars so clearly before!

DAY 4 - We climbed to the top of Gunlom Fall and it was defi nitely worth it. The highlight was our own infi nity plunge pool overlooking the amazing scenery. One of my favourite sights of the trip! We then headed over to Katherine Gorge where we would be staying for our last night.

DAY 5 - This morning we decided to hire a kayak (at an additional cost) and paddle through Katherine Gorge, it was so peaceful and great fun. However there is the option to do a short boat trip through the gorge if you fancy something more relaxing. We then started to head back to Darwin. Over the fi ve days we had been able to fi t so much in and you really did get to experience and see so much that Kakadu has to off er. It is certainly a trip I would love to do again.Top tip would be to make sure your swimming stuff is kept handy each day as there are plenty of opportunity for swimming and refreshing dips…which are very welcoming in the heat!!

I was a bit apprehensive about doing the

Adventure Tour to begin with as I’m not

comfort of hotels. However the trip

was amazing! If you want

Kakadu and Litchfi eld you need to maximise your

Claire, relaxing in

Alex- Travel DesignerWhere did you go?

Travelling with APT on one of their agent fam trips I headed down under to Melbourne and then on to discover Tasmania, where we visited Hobart, Port

Arthur, Freycinet National Park and Launceston. In Melbourne we took part in a walking tour – a great way to get your bearings in the city if you’re just there for a short visit. It was my fi rst visit to Melbourne, and I’d say it’s a must-see destination on any visit to Australia, especially if it’s your fi rst holiday to Australia.

What would you recommend?

I was so surprised with Tasmania as I think it is a stunning destination. Tasmania is a great alternative to beach and city stays, and the entire island state is an area of outstanding natural beauty. I would defi nitely recommend this to passengers who are repeat visitors to Australia, and it’s also a great place to twin with a visit to New Zealand for those interested in nature and wanting adventure. Discovering as part of a tour will allow you to see all of Tasmania – I’d recommend a 10 day tour for the full experience.

What was your highlight?

Highlight of the trip for me was Port Arthur, the tour brought history to life. Port Arthur is a former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula, and it’s best to visit in a day tour from Hobart. The visit to Australia’s most notorious prison was really informative and the

guide was excellent. If you’ve got time take a cruise over to the Isle of the Dead, or take part in a ghost walk in the evening through the haunted buildings of the prison.

Travellers’ Tales

Anthony - Travel DesignerWhere did you go?

I headed to Australia on an Austravel sales trip

and was lucky enough to visit Melbourne,

Adelaide, Sydney, the Red Centre and Perth,

however a highlight for me was our two days on Kangaroo Island, located just a short distance from Adelaide.

What would you recommend?

Though possible as a day trip from Adelaide, for me you really need to stay overnight – much of the wildlife come out to play in the early evening so you’ll get

to see kangaroos emerging in mobs to graze. You’ll also fi nd koalas congregating in the mornings when it’s cooler, and you’ll miss the crowds of day trippers. I’d also recommended upgrading to a fl ight over to Kangaroo Island, it saves you a lot of time and off er great views as you land.

Where’s next on your travel wish list?

I can’t wait to head to Darwin for an adventurous road trip down to Broome, and to experience the wilderness of the Kimberleys.

Katie- Product ExecutiveWhere did you go?On a 2 week trip I visited New Zealand – a whirlwind visit to both the North and South Islands. We stopped at Auckland, Rotorua and Taupo, before fl ying

down to Christchurch and travelling on to Wanaka, Queenstown, Fiordland and Dunedin.

What would you recommend?

If you’re short on time then internal fl ights in New Zealand help you maximise the places you can visit, and they’re also relatively inexpensive. Pick up a hire car and explore at your own pace – there’s so many places you can stop off at at the side of the road. We stopped for wine tasting at Rippon Vineyard in Wanaka, which off ered stunning views out over the lake and was one of those places you’d miss if you

didn’t get off the beaten track.

For me it has to be Fiordland – we travelled with Real Journeys on one of their overnight cruises, and this has to be the best way to see the stunning Sound after the daytrippers have left. After sailing out into the Sound we went kayaking to see penguins, before a night aboard the Milford Mariner. Waking the next morning it was pouring with rain, and instead of putting a dampener on our trip, it meant spectacular waterfalls all the way back to the jetty at Freshwater Basin.

Where’s next on your travel wish list?

I’d love to head back to the South Island of New Zealand, and to the area of Abel Tasman National Park, to kayak through the coastal paradise. There’d have to be plenty of sunbathing and snorkelling though, in between the paddling. Anthony

1. Port FairyThe coastal town of Port Fairy is a popular stopping point on the Great Ocean Road; named by the crew of the whaling vessel The Fairy, a whaling station was first established in the area in 1835. With a rich history, explore the streets to see charming traditional cottages, old stone churches, boarding houses and inns. Walking trails lead you to the fishing port, one of the busiest in Victoria, with fishermen unloading their catches of crayfish and abalone at the dockside.

2. Loch Ard GorgeNamed after the clipper that ran aground in 1878 with just two survivors, venture down the cliff steps to explore the hidden beach and read the story of the fateful evening.

3. Twelve ApostlesThis stunning collection of limestone stacks provides one of the most iconic images of Victoria; it’s worth the walk out to the end of the raised walkaway for views right down the coastline and spectacular photo opportunities. Late afternoon is a great time to arrive at the Apostles, with the day trippers gone for the day and the sun setting, you won’t get a time to view this majestic sight.

4. Port Campbell National ParkThis area of National Park was dedicated in 1964 in order to preserve and protect the limestone formations which appear along the coastline of the Shipwreck Coast. This later stretched inland to protect fragile grasslands and heathlands. Now home to some spectacular sheer cliffs, gorges and arches, it’s well worth spending some time in this fascinating area.

5. Great Otway National ParkCovering both coastline and hinterland in the Otway Ranges, the Great Otway National Park is home to the Otway Fly - head into the rainforest for a walk high above the treetops. If you don’t have a head for heights there’s plenty to explore on walking trails through beaches and forest.

6. Apollo BayTo the east of Cape Otway in the foothills of the Otways, Apollo Bay is a great coastal town in which to break your journey. Until the completion of the Great Ocean Road almost all access to the town was by sea, however once connected it became a popular tourist town and fishing port.

7. Kennett RiverOne of our favourite Austravel Secrets, Kennett River is one of the best places to spot koalas in the wild. Turn off the main Great Ocean Road and head up Grey River Road, and peering up into the gum trees you’ll see koalas in abundance, almost appearing to be precariously blowing in the wind.

8. Bells BeachHome to the world’s longest running surfing competition, the Rip Curl Pro Surf and Music Festival, join in with a paddle at Bells Beach or alternatively it’s a great place to kick back and watch the experts in action.

A drive to remember

FROM LEFT cLOckwisE: Great Ocean Road. Melbourne.

Beach in Victoria.

Voted one of the best coastal drives in the world, the Great Ocean Road is undoubtedly one of Australia’s most popular and scenic driving routes. The 151 mile stretch from Torquay to Warrnambool is Australian National Heritage listed, winding through varying terrain, whilst hugging the coast.Built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932, it is the world’s largest war memorial, dedicated to the memory of casualties of World War I. The rugged south west coast of Victoria was previously only accessible by boat or by rough bush track, and besides creating a fitting tribute to fallen soldiers, it enabled previously isolated communities to have a vital transport link with the rest of Victoria. The road was completed within the planned time, with only one unscheduled break in 1924 when a passing steamboat ran aground on the reef, spilling its cargo of 500 barrels of beer and 120 cases of spirit.

Today the Great Ocean Road is not just a way of getting from one place to another, the jaw dropping scenery makes for an exciting journey along Australia’s Southern coastline. This coast can be explored in a manner of ways, with day tours and extended tours available, but by far the best way is to tackle the adventure at your own pace with one of the fantastic self drives on offer, beginning from either Adelaide or Melbourne.
