2013 SOFTBALL SEASON PREVIEW

4

The Gardner-Webb University softball team will look to take the next step in 2013, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs will look to advance past the Big South Softball Championship Semifinals game, where GWU has been in each of the last two seasons, and into the Championship game for the first time in the program’s history. Head Coach Tom Cole, who is in his 13th year as the leader of the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ softball program, has a number of key returners in 2013 headlined by two-time Big South All-Conference performers Samantha Meenaghan and Morgan Baker, as well as experienced starters in Melinda Dulkowski, Jordyn Arrowood, Jessica Childers and Alyssa Gutierrez. Along with the experience, as GWU returns seven starters from a team that posted 28 wins a year ago, and the addition of four newcomers, the GWU roster in 2013 will be full of both speed and versatility as a number of different players can and will play multiple positions throughout the season to give Coach Cole an abundance of line up options. “We are very excited about the upcoming season for many reasons. We feel that this pitching staff could be the best pitching staff we have had since I have been at Gardner-Webb,” commented Coach Cole. “The defense behind these pitchers could also be the best ever, and our offense is going to surprise a lot of people. We cannot wait to get started.”

Pitching The pitching staff will be comprised of a trio of juniors in returners Childers, Gutierrez and newcomer Ashley Rhyne. Both Childers and Gutierrez return for their third year in the circle for GWU, as each recorded 23 starts last season, registering 13 wins and 12 complete games on the season. Last season, Childers led the Runnin’ Bulldogs with 86 strikeouts and held the opponents to a team-best .255 over her 27 appearances. “Jess is an outstanding pitcher who is as good as any pitcher in the conference. The thing that I appreciate the most about Jess is her warrior mentality. She just keeps battling. She has had two solid years and we expect this year to be her best so far.” Gutierrez had a strong sophomore season last year for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, as she posted five wins and 50 strikeouts in 106 innings of work. “Alyssa is another battler. She fears no one and always wants the ball. Alyssa improved tremendously between her freshman and sophomore years, and she has continued to improve. She was extremely valuable last year, and we expect even more out of her this year.” With the departure of Cindy Boomhower, Rhyne will also see a lot of innings in the circle for Gardner-Webb in 2013, as the junior transfer from Walters State Community College was tabbed the 2011 Pitcher of the Year for the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association and set a new school record for both strikeouts with 412 and wins with 55 during her two

year stint as a Senator. “We are very excited about Ashley Rhyne. She pitches like she has no idea how good she is. All she does is go out on the mound and get people out. She’s intense and very workmanlike. We see her having the same success at Gardner-Webb that she had at Walters State.”

Catching With four-year starter McKenzie Morenus having graduated, playing time behind home plate is wide open between a trio of Runnin’ Bulldogs in Elizabeth Williams, Taylar Pridgen and Meenaghan. Williams, who has the most experience at catcher for Coach Cole’s squad, has logged a number of innings behind the plate over the last two seasons and will look to make the best out of her chances in 2013 after sitting behind Morenus, who is on the coaching staff this season. “We have high expectations for Elizabeth this season. Her stick is her biggest strength. We expect to get a lot of people on base and we’re looking for her to drive them in. She definitely has the power to do it.” Pridgen, who is a sophomore that saw limited time as a pinch runner and in the outfield last season as a freshman, came to Gardner-Webb as both a catcher and outfielder and could see time behind the plate for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2013. The left-handed hitter has really improved with her bat at the plate in her second season at GWU and is a constant threat on the base paths with her both her speed and base running capabilities. “We were very excited when Taylar chose Gardner-Webb two years ago, and we feel that she is now ready to make the most of the God-given talents that she has been blessed with. To her credit, Taylar worked very hard on her offensive skills last year, and because of this we believe that she will be a key weapon for us this year. We can see her playing both at catcher and in the outfield.” Meenaghan, perhaps GWU’s most versatile player on the roster, could also see time behind the plate this season. The 2011 Big South Freshman of the Year has a strong arm and is a vital part of the Runnin’ Bulldog line up at the plate offensively. “Sammie is exceptional. She is scary offensively, she has a cannon for an arm, and she is just a pure athlete. Sammie has played multiple positions for us since she arrived two years ago, and we see her doing the same this year. We expect her to see playing time at both catcher and second-base; and we expect her to excel at both.”

Infield All four starters in the infield in 2012 return this season in Baker, Meenaghan, Savannah Burns and Arrowood. Baker, who was named to the Big South All-Conference First-Team for the second straight year in 2012, will start at first-base for the third straight year.

Last season, Baker led the team with nine doubles and was second on the team with 23 RBI. The redshirt-junior, who hit .301 and recorded a .449 slugging percentage last year, will again find herself in the middle of a very strong offensive line up for Coach Cole’s squad this season. “Morgan is another extremely talented athlete. She can play anywhere on the infield, but it’s her smooth glove and soft hands at first-base that allows her to make every other infielder we have even better. Morgan makes the most difficult of plays look easy, and as a hitter she is just as talented. Her stick is big and powerful.” Behind Baker at first-base will be freshman newcomer Scarlett Harris. Harris, who like Baker has a very big bat, was a two-time All-Region, two-time All-District and two-time All-Conference selection at Bandys High School. “When I recruited Scarlett what attracted me to her was her stick. She didn’t just hit home runs, she hit bombs. She has the potential to do some serious damage with her bat.” Beside Baker at second-base will be Meenaghan, who started 51 games at second-base last season for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, and went on to lead the team and the League with a .409 batting average. The 2012 NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region First-Team selection also led the team and League with 74 hits on the season and scored 35 runs on the year from her leadoff spot in the batting order. “Sammie did start 51 games last year at second-base, and you can now see how she has gained confidence at that position. She’s much more comfortable there, and she uses her speed and quickness to get to balls that a lot of other players can’t reach.” Sophomore Mariana Gallardo and freshman Jill Blank will also compete for playing time at second-base, as both young players can play in both the infield and outfield. Gallardo, who started three-games at second-base last season, saw action in 30 games as a true freshman in what was a very deep roster from top to bottom in 2012. Blank, who was a three-time First-Team All-Section honoree, was named to the All-State First-Team and the All-Conference Team at Conestoga Valley High School in Leola, Pennsylvania last year as a senior. “Mariana is a talented young lady who can play both infield and outfield. She will specifically be competing for an outfield spot, although she can also play second-base. Mariana is an athlete who works hard, strives to get better, and is very coachable.” “Jill is another extremely versatile athlete who will be competing for playing time at second-base and in the outfield. Jill had a very strong fall and she has continued to impress us this spring. She is someone who just continues to get better and better each and every day. You tell her something and she immediately makes the adjustment.” At shortstop will be Burns, as the sophomore

started 33 games there last season as a true freshman. Burns, who played in all 56 games for GWU last season on the left side of the infield, was a sure-handed fielder with the glove posting a team-high 121 assists on the year, while recording 40 hits, 23 RBI and 18 runs scored at the plate. “When Savannah came into the program last year she wanted to play shortstop and when she got the opportunity she showed everyone just how talented she really is. Savannah has a great glove, exceptional range and a very good arm. She is the keystone to our infield.”While Arrowood will back up Burns at shortstop, the senior will also start at third-base for Gardner-Webb for the second straight year. Arrowood, who has started and played in 154 games for the Runnin’ Bulldogs over her first three years at GWU, recorded a .945 fielding percentage last year at the hot corner and was tied for the team and Big South Conference lead with 16 sacrifice bunts on the year. The speedy slap hitter, who has 23 career stolen bases, will be asked to provide leadership both on and off the field for GWU this season. “Jordyn is a very special young lady in that she will do whatever the team needs her to do. She can play any position on the field except pitcher, and she can play them all well. Jordyn is willing to sacrifice her own personal stats for team victories. Every championship team needs a player like Jordyn.” Depth at third-base will come from two veterans in Rachel Jablonski and Brittney Morrow. Jablonski, who started 37 games at third-base as a freshman in 2011, moved to more of a utility player last season and will do so this year as well, as the junior is capable of playing a number of positions in the infield for GWU. Last season, Jablonski scored six runs on the year and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage for the season. Morrow, who is one of only three seniors on the team this season, will be asked to provide offense for Gardner-Webb, as well as be a leader both off and on the field for a team that has seven underclassmen and four newcomers. “Rachel is a hard worker who loves the game of softball. She will be used primarily at third-base, but she can also play second. Rachel is a very solid player who brings quality depth to the program.” “Brittney is also a third-baseman who we are very blessed to have. Brittney is a senior who leads by example, always puts the team first, and will not be outworked by anyone. The contributions she makes to this program are priceless.”

Outfield For the second straight season, the Runnin’ Bulldogs outfield will be deep across the board, as Coach Cole has as many as six different players that could see time in any of the three positions – left, center and right field. Headlining the group is Dulkowski, a redshirt-senior that has played in 143 games during her time

at GWU. Dulkowski, who was a 2011 Big South First-Team All-Conference selection as a redshirt-sophomore, played in 54 games last year for Coach Cole’s squad, posting a team and League high 16 sacrifice bunts on the season. Not only did she record 38 hits and 19 RBI on the year in 2012, but she also led the team with seven stolen bases and five outfield assists a year ago. “It was really tough losing Melinda her sophomore year, but now that we have her this year we are extremely grateful. She is just as talented as she always has been, in fact, she’s even better, but now she brings a maturity to the outfield that is extremely calming. She plays with confidence, and that makes everyone better.” Sophomore Kellie Beres, who came on strong at the end of her freshman season last year, played in 40 games last season, starting 24 of them in either left field or right field. Beres, who was 5-of-6 in the stolen base department last season, provides speed and quickness in the batting order for GWU. “Kellie was talented when she arrived at GWU last year, but through hard work and determination she has become even better. She has gotten faster, she has learned to play better defense, and she has improved offensively. I expect this to be Kellie’s breakout year.” Gallardo, Pridgen and Blank will all also see playing time in the outfield in 2013, while freshman outfielder Brenna Blakley, who was a two-time All-Conference selection from Hopewell High School in Huntersville, N.C. intends to redshirt due to an injury.“Breanna is a talented young lady whom we are excited about. We’re disappointed that she won’t be able to play this year, but we’re optimistic that she will recover completely and be able to contribute in the future.”

Schedule The 2013 softball, which includes 32 road games and a 20-game road swing from mid-February to the end of March against teams such as Auburn, Georgia, Middle Tennessee State, Charlotte, Minnesota and Morehead State, will once again be a very challenging slate from start to finish for Coach Cole and his squad. “Our schedule is a typical GWU schedule. When we step out of conference we will be playing some very talented teams. We’re disappointed that we don’t have more home games, but for a variety of reasons we had to postpone some scheduled home games until next year,” stated Cole. “But, we’re looking forward to playing, and we really don’t care where we play.” GWU opens up the season with a non-conference doubleheader with the Furman Paladins on Saturday, February 16th, and then will turn right around to host Morgan State in a twin bill on Sunday, February 17th. Opening weekend will be the last time that the Runnin’ Bulldogs will be at home for over a month, as the next five weeks, GWU is slated to play 20-games all on the road and away from Varsity Field in Boiling Springs, N.C. The season-long road trip kicks off with a

doubleheader at USC Upstate on Wednesday, February 20th, in Spartanburg, S.C. and then continues that same weekend, February 22-24th, in Wilmington, N.C. where the Runnin’ Bulldogs will take on Morehead State, UMBC and UNC Wilmington at the Seahawk Classic. The following weekend, March 1-3, GWU will head south to compete at the War Eagle Classic hosted by the Auburn Tigers in Auburn, Ala. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will open the tournament with games against both Southern University and Auburn on Friday, March 1st, and will then take on Middle Tennessee State on Saturday, March 2nd, and Minnesota on Sunday, March 3rd. After a four-day break, Gardner-Webb will face off with the Charlotte 49ers in a non-conference twin bill on Friday, March 8th, in Charlotte, N.C., before taking a week off to prepare for its Big South Conference opener the next weekend. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will open up its 2013 conference slate on March 15th & 16th, as GWU will take on the Fighting Camels of Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. for a three-game series.Gardner-Webb will then step out of conference play to take on the Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday, March 20th, in Athens, Ga. for a single game, before returning to Big South action with a three-game series on March 23rd & 24th at Longwood University in Farmville, Va. Coach Cole and his squad will finally return home on March 27th, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs will open up a four-game home streak with a single game against Presbyterian, before hosting Coastal Carolina for a three-game conference series on March 29th & 30th at Varsity Field. GWU will then hit the road for a midweek non-conference doubleheader at Western Carolina on Wednesday, April 3rd, prior to hosting the Winthrop Lady Eagles in a three-game conference weekend series on April 6th & 7th. The next 10 games will all be on the road for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, as Gardner-Webb will play twin bill on Tuesday, April 9th, against Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C. and then travel to Lynchburg, Va. for a three-game weekend series at Liberty on April 12th & 13th. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will step out of conference play one final time on Tuesday, April 16th, to take on the North Carolina A&T Lady Aggies in Greensboro, N.C., before wrapping up its regular season road slate at Charleston Southern on April 20th & 21st in Charleston, S.C. Gardner-Webb will wrap up its 2013 regular season slate with a three-game home series against the Radford Highlanders on April 27th & 28th at Varsity Field. The 2013 Big South Softball Championship Tournament, in which all nine teams will participate in this season, will be held at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. on May 9-12.

GARDNER-WEBB SOFTBALL

The winningest coach in Gardner-Webb softball history, head coach Tom Cole enters his 13th season at the helm for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2012-13. Cole came to Gardner-Webb in 2001 and produced immediate results, supervising GWU’s transition to NCAA Division I status and directing the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a school-record 36 wins in just his second year in Boiling Springs. Coach Cole recorded his 400th career win on May 10th, 2012, as Gardner-Webb defeated Campbell 4-2 in the first round of the 2012 Big South Softball Championship Tournament. For the second straight year, the Gardner-Webb University Runnin’ Bulldogs came up one win short of reaching their first ever Big South Conference Championship game in 2012, as head coach Tom Cole’s squad fell to No. 3 Charleston Southern, 8-0, in the semifinals. Yet the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ had a strong season, as their 28 wins was the most in one season since GWU posted 35 wins in 2007 and was the fourth most wins by a Gardner-Webb team in a single season in their 12-year NCAA Division I history. As a team in 2012, the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ 383 hits ranks third in GWU’s NCAA DI single-season history, while the team batting average of .267 ranks fourth in the team record books. GWU’s 196 runs is tied for the third most in a single season in their DI history, while their 27 home runs is the fourth most for a team in a single season. GWU also recorded 174 RBI as a team on the year in 2012, which is the third most for a Runnin’ Bulldog team in their Division I era and totaled 136 walks, only 10 shy of the Gardner-Webb Division I single-season record for a team. On the defensive side, the Runnin’ Bulldogs turned 20 double plays on the year, tying their Division I single-season record set back in 2007. In 2012, Gardner-Webb had six players earn Big South Conference postseason honors, the most that the Runnin’ Bulldogs have had in a single season since joining the Big South in 2008-09. Sophomore Samantha Meenaghan and redshirt-sophomore Morgan Baker earned First-Team All-Conference honors, both for the second straight season, while senior McKenzie

Morenus, redshirt-senior Cindy Boomhower and freshman Amanda Gomes were all named to the Second-Team All-Conference Team. Both Morenus and Boomhower also earned a spot on the 2012 Big South All-Tournament Team, while Gomes was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second-Team. Senior Jane Savage, who was named to the Big South All-Academic Team for the second straight year, was named the 2012 Big South Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was one of four recipients for the Big South Conference’s 2012 George A. Christenberry Award. Meenaghan, who was also named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic All-Region First-Team, led the League with a .409 batting average which ranks second overall for a single season in GWU’s Division I record books. The sophomore’s 74 hits not only led the Big South, but also was a new school record surpassing the previous record of 73 hits set by Abbie Looper in 2007. She also finished the season tied for third in the Big South in triples with three on the year and was fifth in runs scored with 35, which also ranks fourth overall in GWU’s DI single-season record books. Morenus was fifth in the Big South with a .554 slugging percentage, which ranks eighth overall in GWU’s Division I single-season history. Her team-high eight home runs, placed her in a tie for seventh for the most home runs in a single season in GWU’s DI history, while her team-high 33 RBI put her in a tie for ninth-place in the record books. Boomhower was first in the Big South with four saves, third in the conference with a 2.10 ERA, third with 45 batters struck out looking, and fifth with 13 wins. Her team-high four saves is tied for the most in a single-season by a GWU pitcher in the program’s Division I history, while both her team-best 2.10 ERA and 13 wins are third in their respective categories in GWU’s Division I single-season record books. The two-time Big South Pitcher of the Week also posted her first career perfect game on March 9th, defeating UNC Wilmington 6-0 at the Winthrop/

adidas Invitational. In 2011, Coach Cole took a very young team that consisted of only one senior, five juniors and 12 underclassmen to an 18-28 overall record and a 6-12 Big South Conference record on the year. The Runnin’ Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Softball Championship Tournament for the first time in their Big South history, falling short of the championship by one game. GWU had four players earn all-conference honors, as Samantha Meenaghan, Melinda Dulkowski and Morgan Baker were all named to the Big South All-Conference First-Team, while junior Jane Savage was rewarded for her work in the classroom with a spot on the Big South All-Academic Team. For the first-time in GWU’s Division I history, the Runnin’ Bulldogs had a freshman receive the highest conference honor it can, as Meenaghan was named the 2011 Big South Freshman of the Year for her stellar play throughout the season. Meenaghan was also named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association University Division All-State Team, making it the third straight year that both Coach Cole and GWU have had at least one player receive this end of the year honor, and to the Big South All-Tournament Team. As a team in 2011, GWU hit .258, which ranked third in the Big South Conference and fifth in GWU’s Division I single-season record book. The Runnin’ Bulldogs posted 311 hits and scored 132 runs on the season, while five different players hit over .260 on the year, which was led by Meenaghan with a .360 batting average on the year, which ranks fourth all-time in GWU’s Division I single-season history. In the circle for GWU in 2011, Cindy Boomhower, who also earned a spot on the Big South All-Tournament Team, led the way with a team-low 2.76 ERA and a team-high 134.1 innings pitched en route to eight wins and eight complete games. Freshman Jessica Childers proved to be a solid starter in the circle, improving throughout the season, as the righty led the team with 10 wins, 109 strikeouts and

RUNNIN’ BULLDOGS

held her opponents to a .265 batting average on the year. Fellow freshman Alyssa Gutierrez tied with Childers for the team lead in saves with three on the season, as GWU’s pitching staff recorded six total saves on the year, the most in a single season for a Runnin’ Bulldogs team since 2002 when GWU tallied eight saves. The Runnin’ Bulldogs, which were 12-4 in 1-run games in 2011, also allowed only 222 runs for the 2011 season, which ranks as the fourth least amount of runs allowed in a single-season in its Division I history. Gardner-Webb finished the 2010 season in a three-way tie for third-place in the Big South Conference regular season standings, turning in an 8-10 conference record on the year. Overall the Runnin’ Bulldogs were 22-32 on the season, its first 20 win season since 2008, but were even more impressive at home where they posted an 11-6 record. For the second straight year, the Runnin’ Bulldogs softball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Championship Tournament, this time falling to the host and No. 6 seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The Runnin’ Bulldogs had four players receive postseason honors for the second straight year, as senior first-baseman Christa Fullwood and sophomore utility player McKenzie Morenus both earned spots on the All-Conference First-Team, while junior pitcher Cindy Boomhower and senior catcher Mandy Ward both were named to the Second-Team All-Conference. Coach Cole’s squad also placed 15 members on the 2010 Big South Presidential Honor Roll, a huge academic achievement for the Runnin’ Bulldog softball program. Fullwood, who was named to the All-Conference Academic Team, also earned a spot on the NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region All-Second Team and the North Carolina All-State University First-Team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. Fullwood was also named as a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Finalist, a first in GWU’s history.

The end of the 2010 season saw the rewriting of GWU’s Division I career record books, as departing seniors Christa Fullwood, Melody Harrell, Mandy Ward and Christine Murray all left their mark on the Gardner-Webb softball program. Fullwood finished her career as GWU’s DI career leader in batting average (.380) and in fielding percentage (.992). Fullwood ranks second in career RBIs (107), second in doubles (31), third in home runs (20), third in total bases (272), tied for third in extra base hits (56) and fifth in walks (61). Fellow teammate Melody Harrell wrapped up her career second in extra base hits (57), second in total bases (292), second in runs scored (105), tied for second in triples (9), third in hits (190), tied for third in doubles (30), fourth in at bats (666), fourth in RBIs (103), fourth in home runs (18), fifth in batting average (.285) and fifth in stolen bases (37). Harrell is also the only Runnin’ Bulldog in GWU’s Division I history to have at least 100 RBIs and 100 runs scored in her career. Catcher Mandy Ward finished her four-year career at GWU as the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ DI leader in home runs (26) and ranks third in RBIs (106), third in fielding percentage (.984), third in runners caught stealing (36), tied for third in extra base hits (56), tied for third in doubles (30), and fourth in total bases (265). Right-handed hurler Christine Murray, who shattered GWU season records as a junior, finished her career as the leader in strikeouts per seven innings pitched (7.47) and second in strikeouts (471). Murray also ranks third in wins (31), third in complete games (33), third in innings pitched (441.2), third in shutouts (8), and fifth in ERA (3.46). For the Gardner-Webb softball team, 2009 was a season of firsts - the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ first year competing as members of the Big South and the first ever appearance for Gardner-Webb in the Big South Softball Championship Tournament. Despite a very young team, as the roster consisted of seven freshmen and only two seniors, Coach Cole did not allow the youth to perturb the Runnin’ Bulldogs, as GWU picked up 19 wins on the season.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs entered its first ever Big South Softball Championship Tournament in 2009 as the No. 5 seed, but turned some heads in the three-day event. Gardner-Webb went 2-2 in the tournament, defeating No. 4 Charleston Southern in the opening round and then eliminating No. 6 Coastal Carolina in the first elimination game of the championships. While at the tournament the Runnin’ Bulldogs made history, as in the 12-8 win over No. 6 Coastal Carolina, the two teams combined for 20 runs, the third most in Big South Softball Championship history. GWU had four players receive postseason honors, as junior first-baseman Christa Fullwood and sophomore utility player Kelsey Witter both earned spots on the All-Conference First-Team, while junior shortstop Melody Harrell and junior catcher Mandy Ward both were named to the Second-Team All-Conference. The four all-conference selections were the most ever to date for a GWU team in one year since the Runnin’ Bulldogs moved to the NCAA Division level in 2000-01. Fullwood along with Christine Murray were both named to the 2009 Big South Softball Championship All-Tournament Team as well. In 2009, Gardner-Webb’s Christa Fullwood also made waves nationally, as at the conclusion of the season, the junior was ranked seventh in the nation in batting average with her average of .460 on the year. Fullwood was also ranked 23rd in the country in on-base percentage at .519 and 48th nationally in slugging percentage at .719. Fullwood also was named to the All-Conference Academic Team and also earned a spot on the North Carolina All-State University First-Team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. The 2008 Gardner-Webb team was able to reach the A-Sun Tournament for the third consecutive season by earning the No. 6 seed. Cole and his squad went into the tournament and shocked No. 1 seed Lipscomb by a 3-2 score. The team competed just as hard in the classroom, finishing with the No. 2 grade point average

(3.45) in the country among all NCAA Division I softball programs while 10 GWU players were named All-American Scholars. In 2007, Cole guided the program to a 10-7-1 record in the A-Sun and a 35-26-1 overall mark, recording its first-ever postseason win at the Division I level. The Runnin’ Bulldogs, with solid all-around team play, earned the No. 2 seed in the league and advanced to the conference championship for the first time in the program’s history. The team broke nearly every major offensive statistical category en route to a second-place finish in the league during regular-season play. The 23.5 game improvement from the 2006 campaign marked the eighth-best turnaround in Division I history. Melody Harrell finished the season ninth in the NCAA with 1.09 RBIs per game after amassing 51 in just 47 games. Abbie Looper, after blasting one final triple in her career in the second round of the A-Sun Tournament, ended her season 14th nationally in triples per game (0.10). Off the field, Joanna Ward earned first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III honors. Harrell garnered A-Sun All-Freshman team accolades. After the 2007 season, Cole took over the reigns of the Michigan Ice professional softball team for the final three series of the season. While with the Ice, he was able to coach his former student-athlete and former assistant coach, Lani Shaffer, who was playing her second season with the team. With only one senior on the squad and 11 underclassmen, Cole led his young 2006 team to a 12-38 record, finishing 7-13 in the Atlantic Sun despite having to deal with multiple injuries to the pitching staff. The seven wins were good enough for a spot in the conference tournament. Jessi Williams, who led the team in seven offensive categories, was named Second-Team All-Conference and Second-Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III. In 2005, Cole saw his Runnin’ Bulldogs post a 19-33-1 mark while suffering through a plague of assorted injuries, which hampered the squad

all season. Not all was lost however, as Rachael Riopel was named Second Team All-Atlantic Sun and was tabbed by CoSIDA as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Third-Team. The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association also selected Riopel to the North Carolina All-State Team. Cole guided Gardner-Webb to the nation’s 14th-best turnaround in 2004, as it posted a 30-32-1 record to improve 10.5 games from the previous season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also went 11-9 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, good enough for a sixth-place finish and the program’s first-ever appearance in the A-Sun Championship. After leading the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a spot in the A-Sun Championship and just the third 30-win season in school history, Cole was voted as the A-Sun Coach of the Year by his league peers. Now with 12 seasons under his belt in Boiling Springs, Cole owns a 273-371-3 record at Gardner-Webb, making him the only coach in school history with over 200 career victories to his credit. Off the field, Cole’s teams have been extremely successful, as on three separate occasions, he has had the program rated in the top-20 academically by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In 2008 the team finished with the No. 2 grade point average (3.45) in the country among all NCAA Division I softball programs, while 10 GWU players were named All-American Scholars. Following the tremendous 2007 campaign, Cole’s team had 10 student-athletes garner NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete awards. The team finished fourth nationally with a 3.493 GPA. In 2006, he had nine earn NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete status while the team placed seventh with a 3.43 GPA. After the 2005 season, five were named to the NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete roster. In 2003, the team was 20th in the NFCA with a 3.24 GPA. Eight of his student-athletes were named NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete. In 2012, senior Jane Savage was not only named the 2012 Big South Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, but she was also one of only

four recipients of the Big South Conference’s George A. Christenberry Award, which is given to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average among all the student-athletes in the Big South Conference. All 12 of Cole’s teams have recorded a GPA of at least 3.07 since his arrival at GWU. In 18 years as a collegiate head coach, Cole has put together a 402-539-3 career record. He picked up his 300th career victory with a 6-0 win over Presbyterian on March 18, 2008 and his 400th in a 4-2 win over Campbell on May 10, 2012. Prior to coming to GWU, Cole was the head coach at NCAA Division III Elmhurst (Ill.) College. There, the Jamison, Pa., native inherited a program that had to forfeit the last two games of its previous season due to a lack of players. Cole wasted little time in turning around the struggling program and during his five seasons there, became the winningest coach in the history of the program. In 1997, Cole was named the CCIW Coach of the Year and the NFCA Division III Midwest Regional Co-Coach of the Year. Before his tenure as Elmhurst, Cole spent two years as an assistant at Kutztown (Pa.) University with the softball and women’s basketball teams. From 1988-92 he was the head softball coach, head women’s basketball coach and a physical education instructor at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Cole also served a five-year stint as athletics director and head coach for softball, girl’s basketball, and volleyball at Orlando Christian (Fla.) High School. Cole earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation and parks administration from North Carolina State University in 1977. Cole then went on to get his master’s degree from Florida International University in 1989.

GARDNER-WEBB SOFTBALL

Former Gardner-Webb standout Stacie Smith (Reichert) returned to Boiling Springs as an assistant coach on Tom Cole’s staff in August 2007 and is now in her sixth year as the pitching coach for the Runnin’ Bulldogs softball team in 2012-13. For the second straight year, the Gardner-Webb University Runnin’ Bulldogs came up one win short of reaching their first ever Big South Conference Championship game in 2012, as head coach Tom Cole’s squad fell to No. 3 Charleston Southern, 8-0, in the semifinals on Saturday night. Yet the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ had a strong season, as their 28 wins is the most in one season since GWU posted 35 wins in 2007 and is the fourth most wins by a Gardner-Webb team in a single season in their 12-year NCAA Division I history. With the entire pitching staff returning in 2012, Smith had experienced arms to rely on in Cindy Boomhower, Jessica Childers, Alyssa Gutierrez and Jessica Milligan. The two-time Big South Pitcher of the Week also posted her first career perfect game on March 9th, defeating UNC Wilmington 6-0 at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational. Jessica Childers collected a team-high 86 strikeouts on the season and posted eight wins overall, while fellow sophomore Alyssa Gutierrez moved from the bullpen to a starter in 2012, recording five wins on the year. Under Smith’s guidance, Boomhower finished her career at GWU first in GWU’s Division I career record books in walks per 7 IP (1.73), tied for first in saves (7), second in wins (36), second in innings pitched (547.2), second in ERA (2.56), tied for third in complete games (33) and tied for third in shutouts (8). She also finished her career ranked fourth in strikeouts (372) and sixth in strikeouts per 7 IP (4.72). With a very young pitching staff in 2011, Smith relied on redshirt-junior hurler Cindy Boomhower

to help lead a group of arms that included a sophomore, a redshirt-freshman and two true freshmen, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs looked to continue to add to its success in only its third year in the Big South Conference. In 2011, Boomhower, who earned a spot on the Big South All-Tournament Team, led the way with a team-low 2.76 ERA and a team-high 134.1 innings pitched en route to eight wins and eight complete games. Freshman Jessica Childers proved to be a solid starter in the circle, improving throughout the season, as the righty led the team with 10 wins, 109 strikeouts and held her opponents to a .265 batting average on the year. In 2010, her third season as the GWU pitching coach, Smith helped to guide Cindy Boomhower back from injury in 2009 to a place on the Big South All-Conference Second-Team. Boomhower posted a 2.53 ERA on the season and held her opponents to a .257 batting average while striking out a career-high 136 batters. Christine Murray collected a team-high 142 strikeouts in 2010, as the senior hurler tied with Boomhower with three shutouts on the season. Under Coach Smith’s tutelage, Murray finished her career as the leader in strikeouts per seven innings pitched (7.47) and second in strikeouts (471). Murray also ranks third in wins (31), third in complete games (33), third in innings pitched (441.2), third in shutouts (8), and fifth in ERA (3.46). In her second season with the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2009, Smith had a tough task of mending together a pitching staff that was devastated by injuries and untimely illnesses all season long. Despite the obstacles, she helped junior hurler Christine Murray to 11 wins and a place on the 2009 Big South Championship All-Tournament

Team. In the regular season conference games only, Murray was first in the Big South in innings pitched (90.0), strikeouts (98), and games started with 13. On the overall season, Murray was first in the conference in strikeouts (193), third in the conference in opposing batting avg. (.250), third in innings pitched (181.1). Murray was twice named the New Balance Pitcher of the Week, coming on April 6 and April 23 and recorded a streak of 23 consecutive innings without issuing a walk. During her first season as an assistant coach, she helped her alma mater to the fourth-best ERA in the school’s Division I history. Smith also helped rookie Cindy Boomhower record the fewest walks per seven innings in GWU’s history, allowing just 0.91 walks per seven innings pitched. Smith also directed Christine Murray to first place in the record book for strikeouts per seven innings as she struck out 7.46 batters every seven innings pitched. Smith, formerly Reichert, who topped multiple single-season and career categories for the Runnin’ Bulldogs during her playing days, returned to Gardner-Webb after coaching at Frostburg State from 2005-2007. She etched her name in multiple categories throughout her career. Upon graduating, she was the single-season leader in wins, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and shutouts. She topped the school’s record book for career wins, saves, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, strikeouts per seven innings, ERA and shutouts. During her freshman season, she recorded a team-best 69 strikeouts while tallying a 2.36 ERA. Smith led the team in wins her sophomore campaign while amassing an impressive 2.12 ERA in 28 appearances. She earned Second-Team All-Conference honors her junior year and was named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association All-State Team. She posted 18 wins and led the A-Sun with a school-record 213 strikeouts. She also tossed a career-best 1.71 ERA. Reichert finished her career in 2005 by posting 166 strikeouts in 183 innings with a 2.33 ERA. Smith received her Master’s degree from Frostburg State in May 2007 in Human Performance. Stacie married Tyler Smith in the summer of 2012.

GARDNER-WEBB SOFTBALL

Diana Deal, a former standout softball player for Appalachian State University, enters her third season as a full-time assistant coach in 2012-13 and her fifth year overall on head coach Tom Cole’s staff having served the previous two years as a graduate assistant coach. Deal assists in everyday happenings of the GWU softball program including on the field coaching, recruiting, travel and field upkeep. Deal also assists head coach Tom Cole with the Runnin’ Bulldog hitting and offense. As a team in 2012, the Runnin’ Bulldogs 383 hits ranks third in GWU’s NCAA DI single-season history, while the team batting average of .267 ranks fourth in the team record books. Sophomore Samantha Meenaghan, who was also named to the 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic All-Region First-Team, led the League with a .409 batting average which ranks second overall for a single season in GWU’s Division I record books. The

sophomore’s 74 hits not only led the Big South, but also was a new school record surpassing the previous record of 73 hits set by Abbie Looper in 2007. She also finished the season tied for third in the Big South in triples with three on the year and was fifth in runs scored with 35, which also ranks fourth overall in GWU’s DI single-season record books. Senior catcher and designated player McKenzie Morenus was fifth in the Big South with a .554 slugging percentage, which ranks eighth overall in GWU’s Division I single-season history. Her team-high eight home runs, placed her in a tie for seventh for the most home runs in a single season in GWU’s DI history, while her team-high 33 RBI put her in a tie for ninth-place in the record books. With the departure of three of its top-four hitters from 2010 due to graduation, Deal had to help tutor a lot of young players at the plate in 2011 as well as shift a number of returners around in the line up. As a team in 2011, GWU hit .258, which ranked third in the Big South Conference and fifth in GWU’s Division I single-season record book. The Runnin’ Bulldogs posted 311 hits and scored 132 runs on the season, while five different players hit over .260 on the year. Freshman Samantha Meenaghan led GWU with a .360 batting average on the year, which ranks fourth all-time in GWU’s Division I single-season history, and was named the 2011 Big South Freshman of the Year as well as to the Big South All-Conference First-Team. Joining Meenaghan, who was also named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Team and the Big South All-Tournament Team, on the First-Team All-Conference Team in 2011 was redshirt-sophomore outfielder Melinda Dulkowski and redshirt-freshman Morgan Baker. In 2010, the Runnin’ Bulldogs had four players hit over .270 on the season, as senior Christa Fullwood led the team with an average of .389 and was in the top-five in the Big South

Conference in almost every offensive statistical category. Also in 2010, GWU knocked out 342 hits on the season, the fifth-most in GWU’s Division I single-season history, and scored 196 runs on the year, the third-most in a single season for the Runnin’ Bulldogs since 2001. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also blasted 38 home runs, the second most in a single season since GWU hit 52 as a team in 2007, while the team’s 96 extra base hits ranks third in the record books for a single season. Deal, formerly Diana Cook, came to Gardner-Webb after a stellar playing career at Appalachian State. While with the Mountaineers, Deal virtually re-wrote the school’s record book. For a single season, she ranks first in walks, games played and started while also being etched in the record book as second for runs batted in, and third in both doubles and home runs. On the defensive side, Deal was first in fielding attempts, putouts and double plays. For her career, she is first in fielding attempts, putouts, and double plays turned, as well as in walks. Deal is second in at bats, runs scored, games played, games started and in home runs. She also finished her career by notching third-place overall for career RBIs and total bases. Deal also brings a wealth of coaching knowledge to an already strong staff. Deal was a camp counselor from the fall of 2003 through the spring of 2006 at Appalachian State youth softball clinics, instructing beginners to advanced students in softball skills and strategies. For three summers, she was a volunteer assistant coach for the Cabarrus County Challengers ASA softball team. Deal graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education K-12 in December 2007 from Appalachian State and received her Master’s degree in Sport Science and Pedagogy from Gardner-Webb in August 2010. Diana married Jeff Deal, a N.C. State Highway Patrolman, on August 14, 2010.

Gardner-Webb had six players earn Big South Conference postseason honors, the most that the Runnin’ Bulldogs have had in a single season since joining the Big South in 2008-09. Sophomore Samantha Meenaghan and redshirt-sophomore Morgan Baker earned First-Team All-Conference honors, both for the second straight season, while senior McKenzie Morenus, redshirt-senior Cindy Boomhower and freshman Amanda Gomes were all named to the Second-Team All-Conference Team. Both Morenus and Boomhower also earned a spot on the 2012 Big South All-Tournament Team, while Gomes was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second-Team. The two-time Big South Pitcher of the Week also posted her first career perfect game on March 9th, defeating UNC Wilmington 6-0 at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational. Picked to finish sixth in the Big South Softball Coaches Preseason Poll, the Runnin’ Bulldogs turned some heads as head coach Tom Cole’s squad posted an 11-10 Big South Conference record. The 11 conference wins was the most for a GWU team in a single-season since joining the Big South in 2008-09 and ties the program’s record of 11 conference victories back in 2004 as Atlantic Sun Conference members. The Runnin’ Bulldogs started the season off with a doubleheader sweep of Morgan State at home in which two players blasted their first-ever career home runs in the two wins. After back-to-back losses on the road at Furman, GWU returned home to sweep North Carolina A&T in a non-conference twin bill and push their record to 4-2 overall and 4-0 at home. However, the undefeated home record would not last for long, as the next day the Runnin’ Bulldogs suffered a sweep to the hands of USC Upstate to fall to 4-4 overall heading into the Seahawk Classic. At the Seahawk Classic, the Runnin’

Bulldogs went 2-3 overall for the three-day event, falling to Kansas and twice to Fairfield, yet swept host UNC Wilmington in their two meetings in the tournament. A road contest at No. 7 Georgia proved to be too much for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, as the Georgia Bulldogs defeated GWU 14-1 in five-innings in Athens, Ga. Gardner-Webb then competed at the 2012 UF Lipton Invitational hosted by the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. There, GWU opened up the tournament with an 8-6 win over Tennessee State, yet dropped the next four games, two to No. 3 Florida and two to Eastern Michigan, to give the Runnin’ Bulldogs their longest losing streak of the season to date. GWU bounced back to drop Tennessee State 6-5 in the final game to snap their losing skid and move to 8-12 overall on the year. The win sparked the Runnin’ Bulldogs who next defeated Albany 2-1 and UNC Wilmington 6-0, in which Boomhower pitched a perfect game, pushing their winning streak to three-games in a row. Yet, the second day of the Winthrop/adidas Invitational did not go as well for GWU, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs dropped back-to-back games to Bowling Green and St. John’s to fall to 10-14 on the year. With tournament play over, Gardner-Webb remained out of conference play to sweep South Carolina State in dominating fashion on the road before splitting with UNC Greensboro at home to move to 13-15 overall heading into Big South action. The conference season did not start the way that Coach Cole and his squad had planned, as Liberty came into Boiling Springs, N.C. and swept the Runnin’ Bulldogs at home to put GWU at 0-3 to start the conference slate. After a 6-4 road win at Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb took one of two on the road from Coastal Carolina and then returned home to take the first two games of the three-game series versus Campbell to move to 17-20 overall and 4-6 in Big South action.

GWU would next step out of conference play one final time to host the Charlotte 49ers, as the two teams split the midweek doubleheader in Boiling Springs. The Runnin’ Bulldogs then hit the road for a three-game conference series with the Winthrop Lady Eagles and after dropping the first game 1-0, GWU posted back-to-back come from behind victories over the home team to improve to 20-23 overall and 6-7 in conference play. Looking to get over the .500 mark in conference play, Gardner-Webb returned home to take two of three over then second-place Charleston Southern in a weekend conference showdown to advance to 22-24 overall and 8-8 in conference play with five games left in the regular season. A doubleheader sweep of Presbyterian, 7-1 and 3-2, would wrap up the Runnin’ Bulldogs home slate and put GWU at 24-24 overall and 10-8 in the Big South heading into their final conference series of the year. At Radford, the League leaders at the time and eventual regular season champions, Gardner-Webb posted a 4-1 win on a complete game by sophomore hurler Jessica Childers to start the series. However, the Highlanders would take the next two, as

Gardner-Webb finished the regular season at 25-26 overall and 11-10 in conference play. After waiting a week to see where they would finish in the Big South regular season standings, Gardner-Webb finished in fifth-place, giving them the No. 5 seed in the 2012 Big South Softball Championship Tournament presented by Musco Sports Lighting. With the No. 5 seed, Gardner-Webb, who drew the No. 4 seeded Campbell Fighting Camels in the first round, used a late three-run seventh, including a two-run home run off the bat off redshirt-junior Melinda Dulkowski, to upend the Fighting Camels and advance in the winners bracket. In the next round, the Runnin’ Bulldogs would battle the top-seeded and host Radford Highlanders in a marathon contest before the Highlanders scored in the bottom of the 10th to earn the 1-0 win and knock GWU into the losers bracket. With their backs against the wall, GWU came out swinging as Morenus blasted two home runs and fellow senior Lindsea Hutchinson hit a monster bomb to left field against the No. 7 Presbyterian Blue Hose to defeat PC 11-9 and move on in the double-elimination tournament. After a 6-2 win over No. 3 Charleston Southern moved the Runnin’ Bulldogs one win away from the championship game for the second straight season, Gardner-Webb simply ran out of gas in their next contest, their fifth in a three-days, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs fell to No. 3 Charleston Southern 8-0 to end their season. While the Runnin’ Bulldogs will lose a lot of talent and experience with the graduation of Boomhower, Morenus, Hutchinson, Savage and Michelle Primm, Coach Cole’s squad still returns 13 players that have started double digit games over the last two seasons, including all-conference performers in Dulkowski, Baker and Meenaghan, as well as a number of young players biding their time this season who will look to have breakout years in 2013.

HISTORY OF GARDNER-WEBB Gardner-Webb’s journey from a boarding high school to a thriving regional University is marked by remarkable growth, great determination, and unyielding perseverance. In 1903, the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist Associations conceived a vision of an institution of learning where young students would enjoy “the best possible educational advantages under distinctive Christian influence.” On December 2, 1905, the Boiling Springs High School, Gardner-Webb’s predecessor, was chartered. Even today, the University’s relationship with area churches is still strong. The institution was transformed into a junior college in 1928, and only survived the catastrophic Great Depression through God’s providential grace and the tireless efforts of numerous trustees and local champions of Christian education. Then in 1942, N.C. Governor and Shelby native O. Max Gardner began devoting time and energy toward strengthening and guiding the College. In

recognition of his efforts, those of his wife, Fay Webb Gardner, and their families, the school’s name was changed to Gardner-Webb College. After World War II, the College experienced steady physical growth and academic development. New buildings sprang up, enrollments increased, and by the end of the 1960s, the College was ready to transition to a four-year institution. In 1971, Gardner-Webb earned its full accreditation as a senior college, and nine years later it began offering its first master’s degree in education. In 1978, the College became an early pioneer of modern distance education by launching the groundbreaking Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners (GOAL) Program. The GOAL Program enabled working adults to take evening classes close to home and complete their bachelor’s degrees, a truly novel idea for its time. Today, Gardner-Webb’s GOAL classes are available at 16 centers across North Carolina. The institution officially became Gardner-

Webb University in January 1993, and in 2001—four years shy of its centennial—the University began offering its first doctorate (Doctor of Ministry). Today, Gardner-Webb offers a host of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including four doctoral programs in ministry, educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, and as of 2012, nursing practice. In 2006, Dr. A. Frank Bonner was inaugurated as Gardner-Webb’s 12th President, ushering in the University’s latest era of remarkable growth. Under Bonner’s leadership, Gardner-Webb has achieved record enrollments, built impressive new buildings like the newly opened Tucker Student Center, and earned national acclaim for academic quality and student achievement. Most important, though, the University has reaffirmed its commitment to the guiding and sustaining principles of faith, service, and leadership, and to preparing graduates for lives of lasting impact, “For God and Humanity.”

An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Education Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 21 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of thirteen certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education, Wellness and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must challenge and pass the Board of Certification Exam to become Certified Athletic Trainers (AT). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE10 Principles of Performance

1. Attention to Detail * It is the mission of the athletic performance staff to carefully research, plan, and effectively execute every particular detail of training the student-athlete.

2. Testing and Evaluation * By looking at Anatomical Composition, Measurements, evaluating athletic skill, and goal setting.

3. Train Movements, not Muscles * Athletes. Not body builders. Athletic skill such as running, jumping, throwing, and shooting occur in different planes of motion, and all require proper neuromuscular recruiting patterns. * Terminology such as: push, pull, vertical, horizontal, transverse, linear, lateral are used when involving training.

10 Principles of Performance

4. Train Explosively * Utilizing appropriate training methods, student-athletes have the opportunity to take full advantage of their fast twitch potential.

5. Functional Mobility and Postural Control * Athletes are required to move their bodies and / or objects in a desired range of motion, while demonstrating coordination and control. * Flexibility, Range of Motion, and having a understanding of the relationship of anatomy while executing positions / movement patterns is essential.

6. Periodization and Variety * It is imperative that a successful training program utilize proper progression levels, periodized intensities, and volume design. * Exercises and drills must show variety to peak athlete interest, sustain performance levels, prevent overtraining, and cultivate competition.

10 Principles of Performance

7. Specificity * It is important to not only train the athlete in the movements required, but in the energy system required of the sport.

8. Diet and Recovery * Proper nutrition and rest help meet the energy demands of training. The body requires six separate types of nutrients in order to function at peak levels. It is important to consume a balance of these different types of foods to supply the necessary nutrients.

9. Attitude * You have no control over what the other guy does. You only have control over what you do.” - A.J. Kitt

10. Develop Trusting Relationships * It is very difficult (if not impossible) to disrupt or break up a team whose foundation is built on trust, loyalty, and integrity.

Chuck BurchGWU Vice President for Athletics

16th Year Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 16th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 31st year overall in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Runnin’ Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last five academic years.

Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ in 2006-2007. In 2009-10 the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball program won their first-ever Big South Conference Regular Season Championship and made an appearance in their first-ever postseason appearance in the WNIT. The following year in 2010-11, the GWU women’s basketball team won the school’s second Big South

Conference Championship, the first in women’s basketball, and punched their ticket to their first-ever NCAA National Championship Tournament. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and currently serves as the Dean of the Graduate School as well as a professer in the Physical Education Wellness and Sports Studies Department. The couple has three children, Travis, Danielle, a recent graduate of Brevard College (N.C.), and Amy a freshman at High Point University.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The 2012-13 academic year features the Big South’s largest membership (12) and sponsored sports (19) in its 29 years of existence. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 16 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball and men’s soccer for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic

plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, begins play this season with eight members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 29-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 280 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last eight years -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and

as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. This past season, the Big South had a record 41 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 10 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also won its first football playoff game (Stony Brook), had the national women’s basketball Rookie Coach of the Year, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade (Coastal Carolina, Liberty), and had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference in 2011-12. In addition, Liberty was the first men’s golf team in Conference history to win an NCAA Regional, and the Flames went on to finish 10th at the national event. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won six PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 100 Academic All-Americans in its 28 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last three years.
