Brian Eshenaur is aplant pathologist, a certified NewYork State nursery professional and aWestern New York-based educatorwith NYS IPM.
Lamb says:“Due to regular rainfall most grow-
ers had a good year and there are lotsof beautiful trees available despiteseeing a bit of Phytophthora, a kindof root rot, in the fields.
“The fresher the tree the better, which is a good reason to buy local. The branches should be springy andsmell good. A few loose needlesaren’t a problem but you should-n’t get handfuls when you brushthe branches.”
Eshenaur says:“The best way to preserve the
tree’s freshness is to keep plen-ty of fresh water in the treestand. If possible, when youbring it home, make a newcut from the bottom of thetrunk if you think the treehas spent some time on thetree lot and the cut stumplooks weathered and dirty. That way you’re sure to haveopen ‘pipework’ to keep the waterflowing to the needles.”
• Firs and pines have the best nee-dle retention and can last for a monthor more indoors. However if buying aspruce tree, plan to have it in thehouse for just a week to 10 days.• Look for a tree with a good solid-
green color. Needle yellowing or aslight brown speckled color could
indicate there was a pest problemand could lead to early needle drop.• Don’t be afraid to handle and
bend the branches and shoots. Greenneedles should not come off in yourhands. Also, the shoots should beflexible. Avoid a tree if the needlesshed or if the shoots crack or snapwith handling.
• Christmas trees should smellgood. If there isn’t much fragrance
when you flex the needles, it maymean that the tree was cut toolong ago.
• If possible, make a freshcut on the bottom so the tree’svascular tissue (pipe work) isnot plugged and so the treecan easily take up water. Then,if you’re not bringing it into
the house right away, get the treein a bucket of water outside.
Once your tree gets moved to insidethe house, don’t locate it next to a
radiator or furnace vent. And alwaysremember to keep water in the treestand topped off, so it never goesbelow the bottom of the trunk.
County Cooperative Extensionoffices often have lists of localChristmas tree growers.
You can also check the ChristmasTree Farmers Association of New Yorkwebsite at www.christmastreesny.org/new-york-state.html.
For a list of tree farms inPennsylvania, visit www.christmas-trees.org.
According to the PennsylvaniaChristmas Trees Growers Association,Pennsylvania ranks second in thenation in the number of Christmastree farms, and fourth in the numberof Christmas trees cut each year andacres in production. Pennsylvania ishome to over 1,200 farms coveringnearly 35,000 acres that producealmost 1.2 million cut trees each year.
Tips for selecting the best Christmas tree: ••••••••••••••••
Many varieties of firs and pines suitable as Christmas trees are available at your local farmsand retailers.

Keeping Time: The Photography of Don Hunstein The Unseen Archives of Columbia Records
Bethel: The exhibit highlights the 30-year careerof Don Hunstein as in-house photographer atColumbia Records in New York City from the1950s through the 1970s. During that time, Hun-stein photographed thousands of rehearsals, recording sessions, and candid moments of someof the era’s most important musicians and singers. His position at Columbia Records gave himunique access to Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, BarbraStreisand, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel, and countless others, and his photographs cap-ture the true spirit of the performers and theirtime. When Hunstein arrived in NYC in 1954,Columbia Records was growing and wanted tocreate an in-house photo department to handlepromotional photography, album artwork, andbusiness photography. They hired Hunstein, andhe kept the position until Columbia dismantledthe in-house studio in 1986.Through the first half of the20th century, ColumbiaRecords was well known forits recordings of classical andother symphonic music, jazz, and popular music, resistingthe trend toward rock ‘n’ roll. That changed when a youngfolk singer on the label, BobDylan, made the shockingmove to electrify his music, which initiated their shifttoward rock ‘n’ roll.

More than a food store, or a place to shopSTORY AND PHOTOS BY ANYA TIKKA
Sharing and education aboutfood are just as important asproviding the community with
fresh locally grown produce, saidCalin Riffle, the owner of the newlyopened Farm N’ Go store explainedabout her philosophy.
Her message is that using localbusinesses year round, not just onSmall Business Saturday, is beneficialfor everyone. She manages the storemostly on her own, while her partnerDavid Morris works in the HeirloomAcres farm, where most of the pro-duce comes from.
“Upward of 80 percent of productson grocery store shelves containGMOs,” she explained, referring togenetically modified organism.“…and that’s a big reason why we feltwe have to set up shop, and not justdo the farm markets, but to be hereall the time.”
Calin also wants to make foodaffordable, and she’s already plan-ning to hang up signs offering per-manent discounts to senior citizens, veterans, and firefighters. She alsowants to educate people about thefood options available, health andenvironment, and how choosing tostay local helps to put the moneyback to local economy.
“We farm using sustainable meth-ods, permaculture,” Calin said, avoiding using the word “organic,”feeling it’s now too commercialized. She said her farm and many of hersuppliers are not certified, becauseshe wants to avoid interference intheir farming methods.

A shop for four seasonsSTORY AND PHOTOS BY FRANK RIZZO
The chill of winter, the ice andsnow, keep the mind far fromthoughts of lawns and gardens,
but maybe it’s not a bad idea to startthinking of new tools it will take totackle outdoor jobs come next spring.
In the meantime, there is the threatof ever present snow and the possi-bility of losing power to your house.
And of course, it’s the holiday sea-son. Maybe someone on your wishlist needs a chainsaw, or a weedwhacker, or a log splitter.
For these and much more, JohnEschenberg’s in Callicoon is the placefor all seasons for a wide variety ofpower equipment.
Started by the late John Eschenbergin 1947, it is now run by his sonDennis and has been providing highquality outdoor tools in the westernend of the county for decades.
Dennis is the genial guide throughthe two showrooms filled a “kid-in-a-candy-store” worth of new shinytools. The shop is an authorized deal-er for such highly regarded productsas Husqvarna, Stihl and Simplicity.
Here one will find gas-poweredgenerators, ride-on mowers, shred-ders and chippers and backpackblowers.
Dennis has been working full timeat his father’s shop since 1967, andstarted helping out as a pre-teen in1959.
“There were no working papersthen,” he said with a laugh. “My paywas getting free room and board at
home.”Service is the other component of a
quality shop. Dennis, along withtechnicians Raymond Olsen (27years) and Daniel Sattler (“he’s beenwith us on and off since he was akid”) need to keep up with ever evolv-ing technology and have to takeonline or in-class courses to maintaintheir certification.
Dennis has seen a lot of changesduring his decades in the business.
“Computers in a chainsaw? I haveto laugh. Whoever would havethought it?” he chuckled.
For info call 887-5350.
One of the two showrooms at John Eschenberg, Inc. is filled with a plethora and miscellanyof outdoor equipment.

Joe Pond always
ready to serve
DAN HUST | DEMOCRAT
Joe Pond stands in front of a
huge map of the world inside
his Grahamsville office, which
he now rents out to another
law firm.
A friendly contest in Neversink
BY DAN HUST
GRAHAMSVILLE — Joe
Pond’s campaign motto is
apropos of both the man and
the rulers upon which it’s
emblazoned:
“Measure Twice. Cut Once.”
That commitment to thor-
oughness is what Pond
promises he’ll bring to the
Neversink Supervisor’s seat.
It’s based on his years not
just as an attorney but as an
all-around handyman, from
his Grahamsville home to his
bright red 1946 Farmall trac-
tor, which he affectionately
calls “Ruth” after the original
owner, Ruth Baxter.
The 75-year-old Pond is a
household name all over the
Town of Neversink actually,
thanks to a myriad of com-
munity activities.
Currently a commissioner
with the Grahamsville Fire
District, he’s served the fire
department for 42 years.
He’s also a proud member
of the Neversink-Rondout
Antique Machinery Associa-
tion (where “Ruth” gets spe-
cial attention).
As an attorney with an
office in the heart of Gra-
hamsville for the past four
decades, Pond earned his
reputation as an honest
lawyer, but he also supple-
mented that income at vari-
ous times as a real estate bro-
ker, title insurance agent and
income tax preparer for indi-
viduals and small businesses.
“So I know what the small
businessman is up against,”
he remarked.
He also understands town
government, having served
as both a town board mem-
ber and town justice in Nev-

home in Grahamsville. The man behind McCarthy Construction, he
also can be found touring the region with his “Hog Heaven BBQ,”

Mark McCarthy
loves Neversink
the way it is
BY DAN HUST
GRAHAMSVILLE — Mark
McCarthy is as generous
about his rival for the Nev-
ersink Supervisor’s seat – Joe
Pond – as Pond is about him.
In fact, this may be the
mildest race in Sullivan
County history.
“He’s not my ‘opponent,’ ”
McCarthy affirmed on a
warm autumn day outside
his Grahamsville home. “I’d
be just as happy if Joe
ersink.
In fact, he was both from
1975 to 1980. But when the
state mandated the positions
be held by separate individu-
als, Pond opted to stick with
being justice, and he contin-
ued in that capacity until
1989.“But there comes a point
when you’re limited as a jus-
tice,” he related. “You can’t
engage in political activities.”
Now, more than 20 years
on, he’s finally engaging in
those political activities, run-
ning on the Republican and
Independence lines.
Yet his biggest campaign
promise is “to stay the
course.”
No rocking the boat here.
becomes supervisor. I’ve
known the man for many,
many years, and he’s right in
line with my thoughts.”
McCarthy is a bit younger
(50) and running on the
Democratic and Conserva-
tive lines, but just like Pond,
he’s a community guy
through and through.
“I love this place. I’ve lived
here my entire life, and the
community has been good to
me,” he explained. “The rest
of the world changes at a
drastic rate, but Neversink
has always been a bedroom
community.”
Raised on Pepacton Hollow
Road, McCarthy has lived in a
century-old log cabin on Big
Hollow Road for the past
dozen years. He’s lovingly
restored it and added on,
showcasing his skills as a car-
penter and owner of
McCarthy Construction.
