Here is how it works: First you must be a Gill Red Angus customer. At marketing time, contact Gill Red Angus with the

marketing option you wish to pursue:

Hello ranchers,

This has been quite a year with calf prices climbing and cow numbers declining. Prices this past fall and over the winter have

been outstanding. Nearly everyone received more for their feeder calves this fall than last year, while prices in both cull cows

and bulls have been selling higher than ever as well. The demand is so strong and I don’t see it weakening, as the world

population is growing extremely fast (63,072,000 every year) while more and more farm land is getting covered up by city

and more pasture land is getting broken up and planted to corn. I don’t know, but it looks like we have our hands full growing

enough food. This also tells me that agriculture is sitting on top, as everyone needs to eat. With the declining cow numbers

the last two years, I believe prices in the fall of 2013 will be extremely high, and if the corn-belt has an average rainfall season

this year, $2/lbs for six weight steer calves will happen.

With that in mind, we encourage you to take a look at this group of bulls - we are very excited about them. The twos are

stouter than ever, really sound, and did great over the summer on grass and over the winter in the lot. These bulls are getting

better every year, but they should be as we have sold over 200 head of cows from the bottom half of the herd over the last

three years. We feel our cowherd is the best it has ever been. The yearling bulls weaned o! heavier than normal and have

done really well over the winter. The bulls are about 100 lbs heavier as they are stouter, thicker, deeper, and longer than years

past.

We are feeding the bulls a little di!erent than most. Last year, we went to a no corn diet which worked well and we have

decided to continue it this year, as we feel it is more digestible and easier on the animal. The ration for both sets of bulls

consists of silage (10 bushels to the acre), ground wheat straw and corn stalks, modi"ed distillers, sugar beet pulp and a liquid

mineral. By doing this, they seem to hold up great after being taken out of the lot and turned on grass.

The commercial heifers are also better this year. The replacement heifers will be heavier than years past, and are real

impressive. The bred heifers are about as good as you can raise them. If you are serious about the cow business and need

some replacements, you NEED to take a look at this group of bred and open replacements!

Last but de"nitely not least, we have really worked hard over the years making sure our customers get paid well for their

calves. This fall we traveled all over ND, SD, NE, and WY to calf sales bidding on your calves and it has truly made a di!erence

in what commercial Red Angus calves are worth. For the second year in a row, Mobridge Livestock and Gill Red Angus put on

the Red Angus calf sale in October where just over 6000 calves sold with only two of the consignors not having Red Angus.

This is the largest Red Angus calf sale in the country and the majority of the consignors are Gill Red Angus bull customers. It

is amazing the phone calls we get from feeders looking for Red Angus calves because of this sale.

Since thousands and thousands of bulls were pounded out last fall and over the winter, I would recommend you replace

them early. When it rains in April, the prices will be out of sight on every type of beef animal.

For your convenience, we have switched back over to Superior Livestock this year. It will not be on TV, but it will be broadcast

live over the Internet. You will be able to bid over the phone or on the net through Superior. As in years past, if you cannot

make it in person or on Superior, we can handle your bids for you. We have done this for several customers in the past and it

has worked great for them. Just let us know your needs and we will try to make it work.

A couple years ago Bob called us and decided he wanted the best Red Angus heifer calves available to breed and then sell as breds. This

All of his February heifers have averaged right at

$1900 each this fall, and they weighed them getting on the truck on December 22nd as they left, and they weighed on average 1225 lbs.

All of their weight comes from depth, muscle, and length of body. They are the perfect frame, and come from some top reputation herds. I

can’t stress enough that he only buys and breeds the absolute best. Last year the sisters to these heifers topped at $2500 and bottomed

at $1900 for an average of $2031 on 93 head. They should all calve in March except 5 head that will be in April, as they were ultrasound

120 Open Replacement HeifersEvery year we market some replacement heifers for our customers

through our sale. This year we have 120 head from 5 different

customers. These heifers have proven themselves to make great

cows for the owners. We have stayed in touch with past buyers

and they have all commented on how maternal, easy keeping,

and sound they are. They should be, as we work REALLY hard

to make sure the bulls we sell come out of this type of female.

Our customers heifers have always demanded top prices as the

reputation is out there that they make great cows. Depending

on the age of the heifers, they will range in weights from 700 lbs

to 850 lbs. A couple of these consignors calve in February while

another calves in April. But if they were all the same age, you

probably couldn’t tell them apart from each other.

the yearling bulls. He is awesome and a son of No Doubt. The only reason why

Well, we had to put in another heifer that would keep up with the

last 2, and here she is. This girl genetically is real exciting to me.

Let’s start with her sire, he is the great No Doubt bull, full brother

to Lot H1. We already talked about the Dynette line and what it is

capable of doing, so we won’t waste your time. So now let’s move

to the maternal side of the pedigree. Her dam is none other than

the great LMG Roxie 4110 cow, who is a maternal sister to LMG

Gills Diesel 7611, a daughter of the great LMG Roxie 1080 cow,

and granddaughter of the powerful LMG Roxie 818 cow. All three of

WKHVH�FRZV�KDYH�EHHQ�GRQRU�FRZV�DQG�KDYH�EHHQ�LQ�WKH�ÁXVK�FHQWHU�at the same time over the years. The Roxie cow line is what we feel

easy to look at. The Cinnamon cow line has been around here for

years and years. They are the kind that consistently does it year

We purchased the dam of LMG Miss Candy 1314 from OHR a few

years back at one of the Santa Sale’s. She is a big bodied cow,

ZKR�LV�UHDO�VRXQG�PDGH��HDV\�ÁHVKLQJ��DQG�KDV�D�JUHDW�XGGHU�DV�well. 1314 is the same, as she is a real deep made heifer, with a

lot of style. I really like her eye appeal and has that brood cow look

the high selling at the Midland Bull test in 2004 and bred cows

naturally until 2010 as a 7 year old. If stay power in your program is

Here is another big bodied heifer with a great look to her. She is

darker red, deep bodied, sound, and real broody. Her sire is a bull

we sold and AI’d to out of the great Brylor Pasquale 213P bull. His

0418 is the result of our Fall calving program which we decided to not

do anymore. Northern South Dakota isn’t the best environment to have

fall cattle if you don’t have the facilities to keep the little guys out of the

weather. So we didn’t turn a bull in with them in November and held them

open until June and mixed them with our spring calving cows and moved

but grass and mommas milk. She stuck out like a sore thumb all

summer long. But she isn’t only a heavy heifer, but she is a great

looking heifer out of a supper cow. She is real attractively made,

the kind that would work at the Denver Stock Show if that was your

thing. She is real deep bodied, has a big middle, real sound, long,

This is another good Addiction son with only an 80 lbs

birth weight but weaned off over 700 lbs. We purchased

his dam at the Santa Sale a few years ago from Lodoen

Cattle Company in North Dakota. She has done a real

good job for us as well and is out of the famous Larkabelle

WOW!!! Take a look at this guys weaning, 915 lbs and

only a 85 lbs birth weight!!! That is unheard of here and

most other places as well. His EPDs for both weaning

Once in a while we have a few calves that are born a little earlier and

was meant to be sold as a yearling but something wasn’t right and

they needed to be held over like a sore foot, or got a little sick and

never kept up with the others, or was found and weaned later, etc.

purchased at their dispersal. He has a lot of style and is

very sound. We have used him on both cows and heifers

and have liked what we have gotten. This guy has some

extra length of body to him that will really add some extra

In the fall of 1991 we had a mature dispersal sale. That summer we had a plan of

synchronizing the cow herd and AI’ing them to some popular bulls to help them sell. So we

did, we synchronized them and the next morning we went up to heat detect, and there stood

2 big Charlais bulls who came to visit from a mile away from a neighbors pasture. Needless

to say, they bred some cows. We had to give some money back on a few that were sold and

had a white calf, and we also had some cows we were keeping in there who had a couple

white calves as well. We kept those heifers as cows, and they made some real good ones,

and ever since we have kept daughters and granddaughters as replacements out of them.

These cows and their daughters are commercial but are sired by the same bulls that are in

their respected age groups. This guy’s dam is a great-great-granddaughter of one of those

original ½ Red Angus ½ Charlais born calves. So if my math is correct, this guy is 98.5%

Red Angus which would make him nearly pure Red Angus. We could have kept the papers

up on them and he could be a Registered as

a Category B, but we decided to just keep

them as commercial. The only thing different

about him from the others is he doesn’t have

EPD’s, papers cannot be transferred, and his

offspring doesn’t qualify for the yellow Red

Angus tag. Otherwise everything else is the

same. He is a real good bull and needs to get

time, he was quite sick and was set back probably 75 lbs from a

this guys dam, as she has one of the highest MPPA’s in the herd with a

111! She is a very well made, easy keeping cow, who has a nice udder,

Here is one of those older bulls that we held over instead of selling

as a yearling. We don’t try to make excuses for our cattle, but when

one has a case of foot rot as a calf and he comes out of it, but still

loses at least 50 lbs. to 75 lbs. We don’t think it is his fault. We

in the top of the yearlings a year ago. He has a maternal brother

own some cows together, lease some from him, and have

a few herd bulls in partnership. The cows we lease and

own together are actually ran out at his ranch and the

calves are then weaned and sent back here. We wean

the February and some March bull-calves in September

and sell as yearlings and then wean the rest a bit later

and bring them over later in the year. These guys are

then held over as 2’s and were never offered for sale as

a yearling. That is why this March calf and all the other

heaviest bull in the pen, but the genetics in him are

as good as it gets. His dam is the dam to Roxie 1080

and grand dam of Roxie 4110, both donor cows here.

She is also the maternal grand dam of Vin Diesel, and

she was a donor cow herself. She knocked a hip down

at the age of 13 and she raised this guy that summer.

So with having a bad hip and being 13 years old, she

CHANGES TO THE EPDS

Starting with the Fall 2012 EPD run, both Simmental and Red Angus EPDs are run as one – their EPDs are published

on the same multi-breed base and scale for growth and carcass EPDs. For the commercial cattleman, this will greatly

simplify their selection process as they will be able to directly compare growth EPDs (BW, WW, YW, Milk) and Carcass

EPDs (Marb, YG, CW, REA, Fat) across the two breeds, as well as compare EPDs of registered hybrids and composite

seedstock.

Yes, Red Angus EPDs will look differentProducers will notice some changes to how Red Angus EPDs will look. But, most importantly, the rank between animals

will not change. A power bull based on last spring’s EPD run will be a power bull on the new multi-breed base. Likewise,

a carcass bull will still be a carcass bull, and a low birth weight bull will still be a low birth weight bull relative to the rest

of the Red Angus breed.

Since average has changed, just because it is a BW of a -1, that does not make him a calving ease bull. Please use the

OK, here is a bull who has to sell as a commercial non papered

bull. This guy was purchased as embryos, they were put in,

calved out, and then the dam was blood tested and the seller of

the embryos can’t come up with a true pedigree. The pedigree

listed is who it is suppose to be and is believed to be who it is,

but it can’t be proven so that is why it sells as a non papered

bull. It surely doesn’t hurt the bull, but it is what it is. The EPDs

are parental average, but not made by the association. Anyway,

this guy is moderate in frame, real deep chested, and has that

easy keeping look to him. He will breed a lot of cows and do a

the spring bulls this year. He is a standout. The exciting

thing is his grand dam, LMG Miss Lydia 5073 raised the

heaviest calf we have ever weaned this year and it was a

heifer calf. She was born on Feb. 29 and was weaned at

220 days of age and she weighed 892 lbs actual weight,

and that was without anything but milk, grass, salt, and

mineral and sells as lot H11. The performance in this

cow family is unreal, and even better, these cows are

both moderate framed, but big bodied, long made, and

thick, which is how we try to make our cow herd to look.

This is a top bull and we thought pretty hard about keeping him. We really like

his dam and his pedigree. His sire is Grand Statement, the bull we purchased

with Lucht Red Angus and ABS Global. He really adds depth of body to his

calves and puts a good hip on them as well. His dam and grand dam are the

top cows at CT Red Angus. 2058’s dam is a Power Surge daughter, who was

claimed to be the best Rambo 502 son ever. We sold a few sons by him and

they were good. In fact one went to Sandy Willow Red Angus and they used

him real hard for several years. His great grand dam is the real good Velma

840 cow who we really liked, and we sold her last fall as a 13 year old cow.

For the second year in a row, we have a ½ blood Charlais, ½ blood

The company that did the collection was also collecting Thomas’s

Fire Water (past Charlais National Champion) the same time. They

must have had a rookie in there doing the work, as they mistakenly

poured the 2 bulls together and never told anyone it happened. All

of a sudden these buckskin calves started popping up around the

FRXQWU\��7KLV�ER\�FDPH�WR�XV�DV�ZH�ÁXVKHG�/0*�0LVV�/DVV��WR�Red Dawg and this guy was the result. It isn’t what we really wanted,

but he is a super bull calf, just like last years. Evidently Firewater

is a great bull, as he has had 2 sons here and they have both been

outstanding. Last year’s bull sold really well, and we had more calls

and bids on him than any other bull in the sale. If I remember correct,

we had 3 guys on the phone, a few in the stands and a couple online

all bidding on him. He ended up going just a few miles to the east of
