Now in its 11th year, the Heritage House Tour is a fantastic way to get ideas for your own renovation, or to just savour the creativity and character found in the 10 private homes open on the tour.

Sure to be a highlight of this year’s tour is a fabulous stone clad house with a wrap around

porch in Mount Pleasant (above). Designed by architects Campbell and Bennett, and built in 1910 for Murdock McLean, a custom’s inspector, the house has been completely restored including a stunning entrance hall, paneled rooms, coffered ceilings, stained glass and beautiful fireplaces. A beautiful new kitchen addition has been added at the rear and is wonderfully woven into the original architecture.

Houses on the tour are spread throughout Vancouver neighbourhoods and range from small cottages to grand houses. Some are completely and beautifully restored and renovated, while others are without embellishment. Each has its own charm and its own story to tell. The full colour guidebook serves as your ticket and helps to navigate this self-guided tour. You can visit however many of the 10 houses you wish in whatever order works for you. The guidebook gives you the history of each house and tells you a little about what has happened to the house during any renovations that have taken place.

Come by yourself and meet people along the way, tour by bike, or put together a group of friends and carpool. It all works and you are guaranteed to have fun!

exposed to a plethora of stories and traditions, but learn to understand and appreciate an entire city’s

history and evolution spanning the past 125 years.”

HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!

Top Row: 2300 Balaclava Block, Spencer’s Department Store, Railway Club. Bottom Row: King Edward School Wall, Jericho Arts Centre, Arbutus Coffee.

Heritage building conservation policies and programs have been in place since the 1970’s. We thought it was time to ask the public what they think about heritage buildings. Where are the city’s heritage buildings, are we losing too many, and do heritage buildings help address the challenges of affordability, density and energy efficiency? Here is what you told us.

96.6% of Vancouverites love heritage buildings 96% think heritage buildings contribute to our sense of place88% believe too many are being demolished50% want to live in retrofitted heritage buildings and50% will pay more to do so72% believe that heritage buildings are part of an environmentally sustainable city

To those who answered the survey, THANK YOU! We love that you care. The next step is to develop a plan to ensure that the city’s heritage buildings and neighbourhoods are part of the solution to the challenges of density, affordability and reduction in green house gas emissions.

An exciting new exhibit by local artist Paul de Guzman is coming soon to The WALL at CBC. Paul was selected from more than two dozen proposals submitted by artists responding to

an open call for proposals posted by VHF in the early Fall.

Paul de Guzman’s exhibit will be the 4th WALL exhibition. Although still in the draft stages of development, the piece will use inspiration from the CBC Archives and be connected to the theme of Vancouver’s built environment which is the unifying theme for all WALL exhibits.

Exhibits on The WALL are funded through the donation of a percentage of revenue from the sale of coffee at the JJ Bean kiosk on the CBC Plaza. John Neate, Owner and CEO of JJ Bean Coffee, generously supports The WALL exhibits.

We encourage you to support this fabulous artist platform by liberally drinking coffee at JJ Bean.

Hastings Street, when it was named in 1886 after Rear-Admiral George Fowler Hastings, Commander in Chief Pacific Station,

joined Granville Townsite to Hastings Townsite. The bend in the road at Cambie Street is the result of different land surveys in

Gastown and Granville and Hastings Townsites. West Hastings is home to some of the city’s most significant heritage buildings such as Sinclair Centre, Credit Foncier, Ceperley Rounsefell, and some

of the city’s most distinctive temple bank buildings. Read more on our website.

Vancouver Heritage Foundation is a charitable

organization supporting the conservation of

Vancouver’s built heritage through public awareness

and education activities, granting programs that

encourage financial investment in built

heritage and fundraising to protect Vancouver’s built

heritage in perpetuity.

2012 was a good year for Vancouver Heritage Foundation with our 10th year of Heritage House Tours and continuation of our Vancouver Special, Mid-Century Modern, and Laneway House Tours, and many walking tours in the City. The Brown Bag Lunch and Learn’s at BCIT Downtown Campus have attracted a committed audience of regular attendees and new people who come for interest in one of our topics.

The plaques for Places That Matter continue to provide opportunities for people to celebrate sites that have meaning for communities around the City. I have had the pleasure of presenting several of the plaques – at places as diverse as the PNE Livestock Building and the Unitarian Church – and have enjoyed the stories and experiences that are shared at these gatherings. Through these events, Vancouver Heritage Foundation has been introduced to many people who have not come to our past programs, reaching new audiences interested in our city’s history. I encourage everyone to visit the new VHF website and find out about a Places that Matter presentation at a site with meaning for you.

The Board of Directors has been involved in several of VHFs special projects of 2012. A research project, undertaken with funding support from Canada Mortgage and Housing, investigated current public opinions on the value of heritage buildings in our community and their role in placemaking, affordability, and sustainability. The extent that Vancouverites value heritage buildings surprised even our Board who are keen supporters of retaining and renewing our built heritage. The survey results make a strong case for heritage – and interesting reading on our website. Our granting programs have been reassessed and were open for 2013 applications. In 2013, the VHF will look at new financial incentives to encourage energy efficiency and seismic safety as part of renewal of older buildings.

The Board is also renewing its membership in the next year. Mollie Massie, our past Chair, and Michael Hungerford, our Treasurer, both left the Board in 2012, with our sincere thanks, after years of active support for the Foundation. Several long-serving Board members will reach their ten year limit in 2013. Fortunately, we have attracted new members with enthusiasm and experience to support the work of our excellent and capable staff under the leadership of Diane Switzer, our Executive Director.

FALL RECAP ABOUT VHF

LANEWAY HOUSE TOURVHF hosted the 3rd annual Laneway House Tour this past October. On a beautiful fall day 500 people attended the tour visiting eight separate lane homes in Vancouver. Recent talks on the City’s density plans upped the interest in lane homes

and we were happy to be able to shed light on one idea for keeping older homes from the landfill.

A big Thank You to our hard working volunteers who welcomed the crowds, the sponsors and builders who answered attendee questions, and of course thank you to everyone who spent their Saturday with us.

THE SPECIAL VANCOUVER SPECIAL

The Vancouver Special has become a popular renovation site for Vancouver home owners. This year’s tour opened five Specials with varying levels of retention. Attendees commented on the diversity of renovation practices and price points, from the mostly original to the complete overhaul, as it gave them a range of ideas for their own homes. Many commented on the Trout Lake Special with a very contemporary upgrade including a dedicated yoga room and a Dunbar house with a renovation revealing amazing vaulted ceilings (pictured above).

OBERLANDER HOUSE RECEPTION

What a treat it was to hear directly from Architect, Barry Downs, and Landscape Architect, Cornelia Oberlander, about the building of the 1973 Oberlander House on Acadia Road at UBC. A group of sixty people gathered at the Oberlander House to hear from Downs and Oberlander about the house which was featured in the recently released Selwyn Pullan book “Photographing Mid-Century West Coast Modernism” edited by Kiroko Watanabe, Donald Luxton and Adele Weder. Pullan’s images, shot in the 1960s – 1970s, are stunning portraits of the exciting post WWII period of architecture in Vancouver. The book is available from the West Vancouver Museum, on Amazon and at local book stores.

Long overdue, VHF’s brand new website is up and running! Featuring easier access to tours, education, and grant information we are pleased with the new look that keeps with our modern branding.

Also new is vancouverhousestyles.com - an interactive web tool accessed from the website explains and identifies 16 unique Vancouver house styles and defines locally used architectural terminology associated with the various styles. Developed by a team of volunteers and summer students, the web tool is aimed at helping answer peoples’ basic questions about Vancouver houses.

Thank you to all our volunteers! We couldn’t do it without you. We hope you’ll join us in 2013 as we have returning favourites and some fun new events that need your help. Sign up now for the Heritage House Tour June 2nd, the Vancouver Special September 21st, and the Laneway Tour October 19th. New, is the expanded Mid-Century Modern House Tour August 17th. Don’t forget that another reward for volunteering is that we hold some seats for volunteers in our talks, lectures and courses!

If you are a regular volunteer, please send an email to [email protected] with the events you want to help out on this year. If you’d like to become a VHF volunteer contact Jen and include why you choose us and which events you’re interested in. We’d love to meet you!

HAVE YOU SEEN OUR NEW WEBSITE?
