As most of you may know, we have been trying to get our “New Website” up, because of so many things happening here, we are still running behind “but” we are going to go ahead and post the “Free Version URL” until we can get our .com completed. The URL is; www.attuky.webs.com, we will continue this version until we have filled all of the Free Space before moving to the .comphase of our website build.

ATTU has been hard at work developing a completely unique machine that will innovate the martial arts community in both Chi and Breaking. The manufacturing process should be completed by early spring as well as thee necessary documentation.

After extensive research in the area of true Chi development for Combat, we have discovered a unique concept of developing what is referred to as “JIN ENERGY”. This energy is from merging Kemetic Energy and Chi Energy into one EXPLOSIVE ELEMENT called “JIN ENERGY”. This unique development will allow practitioners to train and develop their striking techniques and increase their ability as they move forward in this unique training. The machine helps the practitioner to gain a greate understanding of body transitioning and demands that proper technique is continually present as well as the ability to utilize JIN ENERGY to complete the task.

The concept of developing the machine was inspired from training in the art of Baguazhang under Sifu Steve Kraselsky and our love for breaking as well as Makiwara training. Our Executive Vice President, Soke Nikko Gutierrez is a “GREATE” inspiration when it comes to Makiwara Training, his hands have been condition to the point that he literally uses a swinging log for a punching bag, total Old School all the way, I truly love that about him and many of the Grandmasters in our humble organization. Because of all the knowledge and true life experiences shared among allof these “GREATE and WONDERFUL” Grandmasters, mylife and our style of Sha Soo Doo Jitsu Ryu continues toevolve into a greate martial art system. 1

Grandmaster Winchell P.C. Woo

Written by Wayne Yee for Grandmaster Winchell P.C. Woo

Grandmaster Winchell P.C. Woo is an “old-time” master. He has been studying kung fu for more than 60 years. He started when he was 12 years old, which is late, compared to many other well-known kung fu masters of his time. He was first introduced to kung fu when he wrote on a chalkboard in a local market to log in all the incoming produce. One of the workers, Foon Sing, noticed his strong writing on the chalkboard, using up too many pieces of chalk compared to the other workers. This showed his strong chi even at an early age. Foon Sing was a Master trained at Baat Pai Temple and took the

young P.C. Woo under his wing to train him “from the top down”. Master Foon Sing was a famous kung fu master of his time, having trained over 30,000 students!

The young Ping Chiu Woo was, at first, hesitant to learn kung fu until one day, while out with Foon Sing, the Master showed him a kung fu skill that he would never forget. Coming out of a store where Foon Sing was clearly agitated by the owner of a business, he proceeded to pull out three red bricks from the building. One by one, he would hold the brick in one hand and break it in half with one finger from the other hand then toss the brick over his shoulder.

This so impressed the young P.C. Woo that he started studying kung fu from that day forward.

Grandmaster Woo was born in Canton, China and is the son of an American citizen, who was a U.S. Marine, who died while fighting in WWII. Young PC Woo grew up in China taking a great interest in kung fu and earned a reputation as a highly skilled fighter among his peers, also learning various skills from many well-known martial artists in different styles.

In 1960, Grandmaster Woo moved to Boston, Massachusetts and continued his learning under the highly skilled and respected Grandmaster Tang Kwok Wah. Grandmaster Wah’s lineage is directly descended from Grandmaster Wong Fei Hung, Grandmaster Lam Sai Wing, and Grandmaster Lam Jow. All are famous masters in a list of “who’s who” in the Hung Gar lineage with the reputation and skills to back up their place in martial arts history.

Page 22: 2013 January Issue

In 1967, Grandmaster Tang Kwok Wah bestowed Winchell Woo with the traditional Master’s Certificate, to open his own school to teach Hung Gar, continuing the lineage of an already impressive list of descendants. In that same year, Grandmaster Woo opened the Bamboo Hut Gung Fu Club, one of the first authentic kung fu schools in Boston. The Bamboo Hut Gung Fu Club performed legendary lion dances and unforgettable kung fu demonstrations for traditional Asian festivals, community gatherings and other various functions.

In the 1970’s, Grandmaster Woo was one of the founders of the New England Kung Fu Federation. He hosted the first Beijing Wushu team to come to New England to demonstrate their

amazing martial arts skills that had not been previously seen. In 1992, he hosted the Shaolin Monks in Boston during their world tour.

Grandmaster Woo maintains a notable relationship with the Shaolin Temple, having been invited by Shi Deli, a 31st generation disciple, to teach as their Master Instructor at the Shaolin Temple Damo Zen Wushu Academy in the United States. Grandmaster Woo is also an Honorary Chairman of the Academy.

Grandmaster Woo’s kung fu skills are extraordinary accomplishments that truly allow him to be listed as one of the top martial arts masters of the world. His Iron Body skill is still being demonstrated even at the age of 74, as he bends spears in 6 different pressure points on his body, which includes the throat, and has a cylinder block of cement broken over his back at the same time. At one demonstration, one of the spear holders failed to move in unison with the other spear holders. The result was a bent spearhead at 90º! This spear was positioned in his Dan Tien just below his belly button. Grandmaster Woo has perfected the skill of Gum Joon Jow, the ability to bring up the chi to protect all his important pressure points when needed.

6

Page 23: 2013 January Issue

Currently, Grandmaster Woo is concentrating his efforts to promote the 5 Elements Tai Chi form that he has created and only recently introduced to the public and made available for lessons. Taking all of the most important and useful techniques in his lifelong study in Hung Gar, Chi Gong, and his association with masters in other styles, Grandmaster Woo has combined them into one very beautiful yet practical form that promotes good health and self-defense.

7

Page 24: 2013 January Issue

All the movements in the 5 Elements Tai Chi form have practical applications, including the simplest Chi Gong movements that many practitioners regard as “only an exercise”. There are also breathing exercises from simple to advanced to promote the growth of chi, the life force of all living things. 5 Elements Tai Chi combines, not only the elements of Fire, Earth, Gold, Water and Wood, but also, the five animals found in Hung Gar, Tiger, Crane, Dragon, Leopard, and Snake. The 5 Elements Tai Chi form is a form for life. The more you study it, the more it reveals to you.

8

Page 25: 2013 January Issue

Grandmaster Winchell Woo is an Official Representative of Hung Gar for Lam Jow, Tan Kwok Wah, and the Hong Kong Association. Over the years, Grandmaster Woo has had schools in Boston, Belmont, Hudson and Springfield, all in Massachusetts, as well as Guangdong and Fushun, China.

He is also recognized by the following organizations for his skill and contributions to the martial arts:

• WOMA (World Organization of Martial Arts) • World Self-Defense Federation • The Dragon Combat Kungfu Society • World Soke Head Council of Japan • United States Martial Arts Association • United States Ju-Jitsu Federation • American Taiho Jitsu Association • Tang's Kung Fu Federation Chinese Siu Lam Kung Fu Association Greece • North American Grandmasters Council • Headmasters & Founders Assembly of Sokeships • Martial Arts Masters, Pioneers & Legends Hall of Fame • Korean Yudo & Hapkido Association • Pioneers Legends Hall of Fame

Grandmaster Winchell P.C. Woo resides in Massachusetts and can be reached through his school, Chiu Mo Kwoon, 164 Lincoln St, Boston, MA. The school’s website is www.hunggarboston.com

NAPOLEON MEANS BUSINESS

THE ART OF BUSINESS BASED ON THE MAXIMS OF NAPOLEON

By

STEPHEN F. KAUFMAN

INTRODUCTION

There is no need to attempt an introduction of Napoleon Bonaparte; his contribution to the

world and certainly to France is inestimable. He wa s, among many things, a major player in the

structure of western civilization, and regardless of the final mistakes that he made, his influence is

everlasting and, without doubt, quintessential in understanding warfare strategy based on desire and

total conquest of the world in its own form.

In my previous books I have introduced a vast majority of the world to the works of Miyamoto

Musashi's Book of Five Rings, Sun Tzu's Art of War, and the docu-fiction account of life in the court of

Miyamoto Yoritomo in The Shogun's Scroll. Along with the precepts for understanding conquest in the

Asian tradition, this present work will enable those biased for whatever reason to assimilate the same

intelligence used in the world traditions of the West. There is no diffe rence in application for the benefit

of personal victory in any theater of conflict, including the business of business. Napoleonic maxims illustrate in completeness and simplicity the knowledge that is required for

winning in business situations where p erhaps the ideal would be to compare business to warfare. I have

chosen to use the parameters of business rather than martial conflict to alleviate the constant cloying

and annoying barrage of death-dealing warfare that makes up the current ideology. The principles are

the same, however, with the exception I have pointed out in my version of the Book of Five Rings:

“There is a significant difference in not getting a deal signed and having your head cut off.” Learn from

Napoleon and recognize that my interp retation of these matters are lucid and extraordinarily functional. 10

Page 27: 2013 January Issue

Imagination is a requirement for intelligent and progressive management and leadership. Certain of

Napoleon's maxims are very obviously military oriented but can be readily translated in to a business

scenario. You may or may not agree with the precept I propose, but the validity of the condition will

always be realistic in regards to a commercial endeavor.

The fundamental ideas spoken of by Napoleon cannot be argued against. They are im mutable

and, as such, form an intrinsic aspect of study of any strategic complexity. I have chosen to incorporate

certain ideas throughout this work in the expectation that although in business we are not speaking of

killing in the physical sense, we are, however, thinking in terms of beating any form of competition.

It is curious that a book eventually takes on a life of its own. What started out as a guide for

business management based on the maxims of Napoleon can be a guide for maintaining visions of

accomplishment in all aspects of life.

NAPOLEON MEANS BUSINESS THE ART OF BUSINESS BASED ON THE MAXIMS OF NAPOLEON

By

STEPHEN F. KAUFMAN

Maxim I: Campaigns of a military nature are generally beset with physical c hallenges that must be

reckoned with such as mountains, rivers, deserts and cities. Each one has to be overcome at various

times.

Business Commentary: In the course of doing business, regardless of the venue that must be

approached, it is of considerable importance to realize exactly what and where you are moving towards

and the reason for doing it. This consideration by itself will always tell you precisely what has to be

addressed in terms of preparations and maintenance of resources. To accomplish your objective, all

must be dealt with in like manner, such as the need to deal with possible limited resources, the heights

to be scaled, and the torrents of rage that may accompany the passion of those involved with any

conquest in any endeavor. Though there may be a hierarchy by definition, each one in its own place

will represent specific problems that must be dealt with before additional progress can be made. It is

necessary to know the “territory,” or business climate prior to any irreversible decision is made.

Maxim II: When planning a campaign, the astute general must be aware of anything the enemy can

and may do. He must prepare beforehand whatever may be required to counteract the possibility. Plans

of a campaign may have to be changed in an ongoing p rocess. The brilliance of the general must take

into consideration the abilities of his soldiers and the obstacles to be overcome in the battle arena.

Business Commentary: In business, as with everything else that would be considered a valuable

accomplishment, it is virtually impossible to understand and to become aware of every aspect of a

campaign due to the frivolities of men. All known aspects must be carefully studied by managers, and

the objective to be gained has to be understood by his most trusted staff. Once an operation is begun, it

is essential that the leader be able to depend on the compliance of his people so that there is no series of

surprises that can interfere with the accomplishment of the goal. Any time an immediate plan is

thwarted for any reason, there has to be an alternative plan at the ready to alleviate any form of total

collapse of the intended outcome. It becomes more and more difficult to foresee a possible deterrent

when the leader is not completely aware of the intentions of h is working staff that includes sales,

marketing and product development departments.

12

Page 29: 2013 January Issue

Maxim III: Undertaking the conquest of a country, a general needs to consider two aspects of the

army: its vitality in neutral situations and in dealing with very great obstacles. Both aspects must be

supported, or if one is left to fend for itself, both will become vulnerable.

Business Commentary: Managers and leaders can never assume that orders and directives are being

followed in the manner that has been proscribed. Regardless of the sincerity of your associates and

those under your direction, there will always be the desire of someone to usurp you, though their

immediate intent may not even be obvious to themselves. Managers must be very astute in their hiring

practices. If you are attempting to maneuver in two different directions, you should understand that

each of the directions must be fully covered. Not to do so will only cause you to have to keep changing

your focus until you eventually lose control of both.

Maxim IV: When more than one army is involved with a conquest, each will have separate lines of

operation until all contingents are focused on one primary objective. This must be accomplished before

the battle begins, and it should never be done in the vicin ity of the enemy. This will enable the enemy

to unite his forces, and knowing your intentions, readily beat your advances.

Business Commentary: When you are involved with the possible takeover of a situation that promises

a potential for tremendous profit, you will generally need to have the cooperation of other parties to

assist you in your endeavor. It is essential that all involved understand what the eventuality is expected

to be, and each participant must understand their specific role in the venture. Under no circumstances

should anything be discussed or developed where it is possible for the opposition to become privy to

your intentions. The reason for this should be obvious, and there must never be trust where it is not

required. If you are considering the applications of your endeavor as a long range situation, such as the

takeover of a competitive corporation or business, why would you want input from those who are not in

favor of your adventure? The rampant jealousy and loose -mouth tactics of those not in complete

sympathy with your desires can seriously undermine your efforts. And remember, if someone is on

your side today, they may not be there tomorrow. The only one you can trust is yourself.

Maxim V: Wars are governed by basic rules for victor y. Every war must have a defined goal, and the

basic rules must be observed. As well, wars should only be fought with adequate resources proportional

to the obstacles to be overcome and the needs of the army.

Business Commentary: It is impossible to over come an objection if you are unprepared to back up your situation with adequate resources and associates in alliance with your ideals. In business, where

13

Page 30: 2013 January Issue

financial gain is a major aspect of management's focus, consideration of every participant's input mus t

be realistically met. You must endeavor to maintain complete and total domination of the outcome in

order to accomplish your goal. Do not expect others to be in accord with you if they have their own

ideas about what should or should not be accomplished.

Maxim VI: It is most important to know when to advance and when not to advance. Once an assault

has begun, it must be continued relentlessly until the objective is gained. Realize that there will be

times when your most ardent efforts do not succeed, and you must call into action your alternative

plans. The last thing to ever consider is retreat, which costs more in men and materials than the most

bloody engagement and debilitates the morale of an army. In full combat there is the equality of loss by

both sides when an impasse is not resolved. In retreat, the loss is primarily your own.

Business Commentary: If your plans are not clearly spelled out and understood by yourself, then how

can you expect others to agree with your objectives. When you begin a campaign it is essential to

continue on without hesitation to your goals and to have the resoluteness required for successful

accomplishment. If it is necessary to regroup and try to restructure your efforts, you will run the risk of

losing the cooperation of those who may have been in accord with your ideas in the first place. This

leads to the possibility of not being able to continue on in your quest and having to find others who will

work in conjunction with you. Each time you have to restructure your business plans, you are

essentially losing forward motion and, as well, losing your own impetus towards attainment. Be sure to

understand what it is you want to accomplish, and trust in yourself that you will attract those

Master Alan GoldbergBy John Sui

And the Winner is! Words spoken at the event now being called the “Academy Awards of Martial Arts.” Action Martial Arts Magazines Hall of Fame, the world’s largest event of its kind with over 1400 dressed in their best. One must wonder what Master Goldberg, Publisher and Promoter of the event is thinking looking out in this vast sea of martial artists. How did it all start? Over forty four years ago Alan Goldberg would set forth a path in Martial Arts that some of us could only dream of. Master Goldberg’s early training was in the art of Shotokan Karate. Having the honor of studying with such Famous Masters as Manard Miner and George Cofield. He would later on learn the traditional and non-traditional arts of Five Animal Kung FuAs the 1970’s entered, Master Goldberg would meet a young Master that would take him on the path to where he is at today. That young Master was Jason Lau. Sifu Lau is the disciple of famed Shaw Bros. stable Master Jiu Wan. Sifu Lau and Master Goldberg would form a student and Master bond that has lasted over thirty years. A friendship so close that they even spent five years living in a Shaolin Wing Chun temple with three other disciples (which he now holds the title of #1 Disciple of the Family.) Master Goldberg jokes of those days as saying, “Sifu Lau would wake up at 2:00 in the morning, telling his disciples it was time to train.” For Master Goldberg, it was like a dream. or sometimes woke up the next morning wondering was it or wasn’t it. “I would have lived there longer with Sifu Lau, but I was due to get married soon and my wife did not agree with my continued plan of living in a temple.” Don’t know why not? When Sifu Lau left New York City in the early 80’s, Master Goldberg was left with no one to train with. Sifu Lau suggested he train with the late Sifu Moy Yat of the Yip Man family. This would give Master Goldberg the opportunity to study Wing Chun under two different Sifus. Allowing him the chance to have a well-rounded education in the art. Known for his longevity in the Art, Master Goldberg is a Pioneer of Wing Chun in the United States.Master Goldberg is now teaching Wing Chun Kung Fu in the heart of Brooklyn to a small but dedicated group of students. The temple has been active for over Fifteen years and has had opportunity to expand it as a business. “I have had opportunities to expand, but I am really not interested in having a large school because it loses some of the tradition and close family ties that he has built with his students. The tradition continues as three of his oldest disciples teach in different areas across the U.S.A. Other students include actor Joe Piscopo of Saturday Night Live, Heavy-weight world champion Dimitrius “Oak tree” Edwards, who is notoriously known as the man who broke Mike Tyson’s ribs in a sparring match, World renown Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard Pearl. People associated with his Kung Fu Family include Phil Morris from the Seinfeld show and Joe Venery from the Oldies group the Tokens (The Lion sleeps tonight) Master Goldberg is the holder of Black Belt Magazines “Kung Fu Instructor of the Year 2005 “ and Holder of over 50 other Hall Of Fame Awards. He holds positions in many boards in major Martial Arts federations. He is a founding member of Martial Arts Grand Master International Council (MAGIC), a founding member of World Black Belt along with, Chuck Norris and Bob Wall Publisher of Action Martial Arts Magazine, the largest free magazine in the U.S. today, he created one of the nations hottest martial arts fads such as The Action Martial Arts Magazine Collector Cards. Master Goldberg created Law Enforcement Survival System (LESS), which was the only self-defense course taught to the NYC Emergency Service Unit of the Police Department. Starred in Great Karate Inspirations in which he represented the only person performing Kung Fu. He has an instructional video on Wing Chun produced by Yamazato Productions. , appearing in Rising Suns Production Martial Arts Masters , He has also just taken a position as Vice President of Shaolin Brand Products. Board Member to The Martial Arts History Museum, Martial Arts of China Historical Society, Black Belt Magazine (Festival of Martial Arts). He was also one of the promoters and Vice President of 21st Century Warriors, which showcased some of the legendary martial artists of our time. This event saw the return of Don “The Dragon” Wilson, Royler Gracie, Orlando “The Warrior” Rivera, Dan “The Beast” Severn and others battling it out on Pay-Per View.

My story about Sensei Gordon Garland and his contribution to the advent of Karate in America is one of amazement. Weapons maker Gordon Garland obtained his 7th Dan in Shuri –ryu and 5th Dan in Ryuko Kempo, and known to his friends as Kyoshi had done more for the advancement of Kobudo and the art of weaponry than any other person today. He contributed greatly to the understanding of the vast legacy of knowledge left by his friend and teacher Grandmaster Robert Trias. Sensei Garland started in a Phoenix dojo in the early 1950’s and saw karate grow from a handful of people practicing judo to the tremendous organization it had become at the time of his teachers death in 1989. Kyoshi Garland tells of Master Trias last advice that was given to his students in a seminar in 1989, “If only you knew what you just don’t know. And I have no time left to help you.You must go seek knowledge that is being shown today and if you find something you are doing different, then change it if you believe the new knowledge is correct.” In 1992 at a meeting of the USNKA and the USAKF, Sensei Garland was awarded the status of living Martial Arts Treasure, the first of this award to be given in the United States. In 1999 at the National Martial Arts Symposium he was given the Meijin Award along with such notables as Hanshi John Paschivas, Hanshi Robert Bowles, Sensei Jim Logue, and Kyoshi Dan Smith., for Karate during their lifetime.Sensei Garland made a comment on Karate and said “ There really isn’t anything new in Karate or Kobudo, There is only a greater understanding of what has always been.” Sensei Garland and I became very good friends in 1992 when I went and taught Wing Chun at a local Karate school that Sensei Garland was one of the instructors at. He actually introduced me to the owner’s and got me the teaching position. Over the next few months we had long discussions on Shuri Ryu and Wing Chun.I was fascinated at how he could barely touch you and the pain factor was immense. He was truly a Master of pressure point techniques. Also the weapons that he made were incredible. He used only the finest woods available to make his weapons with. He made sai’s,bo’s,and he also made the Te No Euchi whose origin is from Shorinji-ryu karate. I still have this weapon that he made for me, and it is a very beautiful piece that I will always treasure. It is of Japanese origin and uses many of the techniques of the Manrikik Usari. About five years ago I heard the news that my friend Gordon Garland had passed away. I lost contact with him over the years since we had taught at the Karate School, and I will always remember him as an honest and trustworthy person. We shared many ideas and viewpoints on the Martial Arts and both of us had great respect for each other. I am a very lucky person to have been able to spend many hours with Sensei Garland and learn about cultures that he was well versed in. He will be truly missed by the countless friends and students that his path crossed. He truly is a living legend of the Martial Arts.

Does your exercises contain martial arts intention? Why We Train the way we do - forging the body

by Sifu Richard Mieir-King

As we train, we should examine how we are training and why we are training in the manner that we do. We are martial artists. Yes, we do exercise to keep in shape. But do we simply do “exercise”? Or do you train your body in such a way as to exercise it, to promote health, AND also condition the body for combat? If we are ONLY doing exercise then the martial arts element may have been lost and there is no difference between what one is doing and joining a health club. In fact, what we do is very different from a health club. We do exercise, we do look for good body mechanics to have the best mechanical advantage when performing a technique, we do strive for health and sustainability of the body into our twilight years. BUT, the manner in which we do it is slightly different and there is another element to our training, combat. Our exercises have a very pointed intention, a martial arts intention. As martial artists training should have that intention. We should challenge ourselves to find, or create, that intention should we find it is not there. That is what we will take a brief look at. You can then examine and answer the question, does your training contain martial arts intention. I sometimes get strange looks because I do pushups on my fingertips. Sometimes people just do not understand that I am not just exercising, I am exercising with a purpose. The purpose, besides health, wellness, strength, etc, I am also making my body more combat ready. This is what sets us, as martial artists, apart from other forms of exercise. This extra element is both pragmatic and expedient, the weaponizing of our training and exercises and squeezing out all we can with the time we have and the exercises that we do. Lets look at a couple of exercises to get our minds kick started in the right direction. Then, perhaps, you will see ways to weaponize the rest of your exercise routines. PushupsLets examine pushups, which are commonly practiced and a great exercise but one we can get more martial arts intention from. From push up position, do not let your hips droop, keep the hips up slightly so you do not strain your back. My first go to exercise when doing pushups is to do them from my first row of knuckles, the second row of knuckles and/or the fingertips. And why not, it is great for the hands, simple enough to add, and requires no special, expensive equipment or devices.Doing them on my first and second row of knuckles, and the fingertips, kills 2 birds with one stone – exercise and conditioning, and it adds another level of discipline and difficulty. I really don't think of just doing regular push ups. It is another opportunity to develop my hands, to put them back into the “martial arts forge” again and make them a little stronger, a little harder. When teaching, if I have a student that is having difficulty with pushups on the palms then that is where I start them, but I do not leave them there. At first some may need to do these knuckle/finger pushups on a padded surface, like grass/lawn, carpet, etc. However, the goal is fingers and knuckles on a hard surface like concrete or a similar solid surface, or what the individual can tolerate, it isn't cookie cutter or one size fits all. There are a lot of variations of the push up to get them used to, and doing them on their knuckles/fingers. For martial arts, it's also about forging a tool which is highly effective and useful. But done in a safe way that is also healthy for the hands. Some of these exercises are just the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

24

Page 41: 2013 January Issue

I would add to all of this that it is preferable that you use Dit Da Jow on the hands when you do these types of exercises. Typically people think of just using Dit Da Jow with Iron Palm conditioning but we consider all of this to be a part of iron palm conditioning. So make sure you are using Dit Da Jow along with these exercises to get the most out of it. We have Dit Da Jow available as pictured below.

Reinforced Thumb Push UpsLets briefly look at a few other variations on how we can do pushups. For the hand position, imaginethat you are pointing your finger. Now, pull in your index finger but not all the way, so now you arepointing with the second knuckle of your index finger. Now, place the thumb on top of the index fingerso that the tip of your thumb and the second knuckle of your index finger are even. The tip of yourthumb and that second knuckle are your striking surface and the area you are going to be putting yourweight as you do your pushup. This will be difficult at first, so you might not be able to even hold thepushup position. If that is the case start slow, just easing weight onto this part of your hands. In timeyou will be able to go further and further. Once this is developed, the amount of energy that can befocused into this strike is quite powerful and can be used as a highly effective technique. A great dealof energy in focused into this small area which is the tip of the thumb and the second knuckle of theindex finger. Use caution when striking with this technique, it can cause a great deal of damage and soyou want to think of it as though it were a gun.

25

Page 42: 2013 January Issue

Leopard Push UpsLooking at the close up of the hands, see that I have broken down the hand position numerically to point certain things out. In numerical order, 1) curl and pull in the fingers tightly and as close to the hand as possible, the second row of knuckles is like a chisel, 2) from the wrist to the second row of knuckles make the hand as straight and flat as possible, 3) the weight will be distributed into 2 places, in #3 here the weight is on that second row of knuckles, out onto the "chisel" edge of the knuckles, 4) the other point supporting your weight in this push up position is your thumb. The leopard will also use the claw at times. Fingertip push ups will develop the claw but this will condition this second edge of knuckles for striking targets. You can learn the form, but it will be of reduced usefulness and impact (no pun intended) if this second row of knuckles you are using is not conditioned to strike with. The proof? Put your weight out on your knuckles in this position. If it isn't relatively easy, and if you can't do a push up in this position, you are not sufficiently conditioned to strike with authority. Once condition, this is a VERY effective strike. As a side note, you are also giving your thumb quite a bit of conditioning here and this is beneficial for techniques outside of the leopard where the thumb is used to strike at targets like a spike. How many pushups should be done in this or any of these drills? That will depend on the individual. Some people might find it difficult to even hold the position so that will be the first step towards getting the hands conditioned for this technique. There are quite a few exercises and drills for conditioning the hands. These and many more exercises and techniques are being compiled into instructional ebooks which will be available soon.

26

Page 43: 2013 January Issue

Elbow ConditioningThere are a number of exercises for the elbows and forearms. Here we will focus on a pushup typeposition for the elbows. Notice that I have my sleeves pushed up past my elbows. You want to putyour weight on your elbows, directly on a hard surface if you can do so. You may start off just holdingthis position. As it gets easier you can, from this position, walk forward, backward, side to side and ina circle. This is a good start for training, but there are many other exercises for the elbows in thisposition and other positions. This conditions the elbows so you can land solid blows with them. Aswith many of the other methods, the same warning is offered here. Use strikes with the elbows withdiscretion. The damage that can be done is severe. It is not like in the movies where a person is struckand then they jump back up to fight for 15 more minutes.

Leopard HopYou can see you start in a push up position. This time the palms are on the ground as we are going to be developing something different. From a lowered position push off with the hands and the feet quickly and suddenly so your body gets launched up into the air, as pictured. Then land in the lowered position. Repeat this sequence as many times as possible. Over time your strength will improve and the number of reps you can do will increase. This will develop explosive power in your arms and upper body and requires a great deal of back strength. This will also develop explosive power in your legs since, as you can see, you are pushing off with the entire body to get yourself up in the air, parallel to the floor. What is the purpose of this exercise? Here we are developing explosive energy which will be directly utilized in the hand strikes, jumping techniques utilized in the leopard form and explosive energy in the kicks as well as explosive energy in various other parts of the body.

27

Page 44: 2013 January Issue

Hanging And Pull UpsNow, lets look at something different. Lets look at pull ups. This requires no special, expensive devices or club memberships either, just something that will support your weight. I did this on my patio to illustrate that you have all you need around you. You can do pullups the regular way, and they are a great exercise. But, lets do them in a manner that will strengthen the fingers and benefit our martial arts practice. You can do this from a pole as you might for a regular pull up. I like to use a thick beam, such as one you might find on your patio or somewhere in your back yard. Instead of wrapping the fingers and thumb around the pole, you are going to just curl the fingers at the second knuckle, forming a right angle. Now hang from the fingers in that position. You can practice hanging as as long as possible and you can also do pull ups. This will vastly increase your ability to claw and use the fingers in a slashing fingers at soft tissue. When the hands are developed this can result in a great deal of damage so, again, this is a weapon you want to use with the same caution, reserve and respect that you would with a gun. In the photo sequence you can do pull ups in the regular manner with the body straight. You can also do it with you knees tucked up, your legs pulled back or the legs extended straight forward. These all add extra elements of difficulty to the exercise and place more demands on the fingers, which results in stronger fingers and hands.

If you need something extra to increase the difficulty of this exercise and that will work the hands and fingers more then you can practice hanging form 3 fingers by releasing with the pinky finger. Then release with the ring finger leaving the remaining 2 fingers that you are now hanging from. In the picture you can see the pinky releasing. In the last photo it is a bit more difficult to see the ring finger has released, it is a much more difficult position to hold and so it is hard to fully extend the finger for the photo, but the only fingers holding on in the 3rd photo is the index and middle fingers. Practice this cautiously and only proceed as you feel you are truly able to.

28

Page 45: 2013 January Issue

Dumb Bell ExercisesLets take some dumb bells and use them in a less dumb or mind numbing way. We will re-purpose this simple piece of equipment for our martial arts benefits and needs. Now, the easiest way to think of to use a dumb bell is to do your punches, blocks and various other hand techniques with the dumb bells. But lets add to that. These techniques will work the fingers, wrists, hand speed and your ability to move quickly, your ability to quickly grab and dig into your opponent and “bite” with your fingers with a higher degree of authority. A word of caution here, there is a possibility you could drop your dumb bell, so practice this keeping your feet safe and away from where the dumb bell might fall. It is preferred that you use a dumb bell like the one in the pictures. This type of dumb bell works best for when you are holding it by the ends as pictured in the exercises below. Holding the dumb bell in front of you, either in a vertical or horizontal position, practice a slight toss up and then catch/grab the dumb bell. Repeat this on left and right sides. Turn the hand palm up and toss and catch the dumb bell as well. When you catch the dumb bell in these exercises really grab it as though you are going to actually dig your fingers into the dumb bell. Now, move to the end of the dumb bell and grab the large end like you might grab a door knob. Practice holding it on front of you and pointing it straight forward. Rotate it clockwise and counter clockwise as though you are turning a wheel at the end of the dumb bell. Now point the dumb bell up as high as possible, then lower so it is pointed at the ground and repeat. Turn the hand so it is palm up and the dumb bell pointed straight up, now wag the dumb bell from left to right, then forward and back. Keep a good grip on the end of the dumb bell so you do not drop it. Alternate this in left and right hands.

29

Page 46: 2013 January Issue

Using the dumb bells in this manner will make your hand/claw/gouging techniques more effective and devastating. Applying locks, holds, ripping techniques, gouging with the fingers to any vulnerable and soft areas, and stripping away weapons will be improved. When you have invested the time, you don't have to wonder if your techniques will work, you know they will not fail you when they are needed. There are more conditioning exercises for the hands as well as other surfaces of the body. What we have covered here is just scratching the surface. As we develop the hands into an extremely effective weapon, it becomes a tool which we hope to never use, but a tool which we keep close at all times, a blade we keep razor sharp, should we need to use it. I have a number of my students can attest to the effectiveness of my applying locks and grabbing and gathering up of tissue and flesh with my hands and fingers. At the same time the health of the hands are improved. The hands are also NOT calloused or disfigured in any way. This was important in our training because the hands, as we developed them, were called and considered the “hidden weapon”. When the capability of the hands are not obvious then we are not showing any potential attacker our “cards” so to speak. If he knows our hands are developed and capable then it gives him a chance to prepare for and counter us. My instructor called this giving him a chance to “put his boots on”. ConclusionThere are a couple of old sayings I was taught coming in the door, “as much as it is up to you, live at peace with everyone”. The key section of that phrase is “as much as it is up to you”, because, in the end, it is not always left up to you. The other old saying was, “in times of peace, a warrior keeps his sword by his side”. Again, simply meaning, be peaceful, but prepared. So this is our preparation. There is a quote by James Allen which states, “Above all be of single aim; have a legitimate and useful purpose, and devote yourself unreservedly to it”. This is a good quote to keep in mind for we should have a single aim and a legitimate and useful purpose. That purpose is the underlying theme and tone of all that we do, martial arts, war like, for combat. Let us wrap our training and all that we do around that purpose so that, if we should ever need it, it will not fail us.

The actual ability to fight appears to have a “disconnect” with traditional martial arts training according to the non-traditionalists. Many of the street-fighting styles indicate that the traditional styles are void of practical application. Having started my training in 1958, I have seen numerous changes in the martial arts world over these many decades. In the beginning there was a ‘mysterious forbidden fruit’ sort of understanding of these foreign ways. The average person could not or did not have the patience or desire to learn something that was somewhat mythical. I remember bullies who tried to pick on me, saying that I fight like a “girl” because I kicked instead of simply using my fists. I was very proud to fight like a girl and remember thinking a girl fighter was the ultimate fighter based upon these old fashioned comments.

When I was in the 5th grade, 3 guys grabbed me across the street from the local bowling alley which was located about 2 blocks from school. They didn’t like me because my family was very poor and I wore shabby clothes and hand-me-down shoes that I got from the Boys Club (yes in those days it was not the boys and girls club). I didn’t have a father and my mother worked at a small coffee shop for $18 per month plus tips. The only way we were able to eat was those tips. The rent for our house was about $60 per month and it was always a struggle. I had a job after school to help pay the bills.

Anyway, back to the situation across from the bowling alley; two boys held me and one started punching me in the face. I grabbed his groin and squeezed with the tenacity of a bull rider trying to get my 8 seconds in before the buzzer. These boys were all a year older than me and the boy screamed so loud that the bowling alley manager rushed over to stop it and basically pull me off. I had survived this attack with some flare and style. The following year I went to another school and didn’t see those boys until we went to junior high school the following year. I met with each of those boys individually and gained their respect by beating each in a fair fight. The last boy, the leader of the pack, met me at school and I was suspended for a few months for fighting at school. As I found out, it’s not a good idea to ever fight at school or at work for that matter. It’s always better to walk away with a smile on your face knowing that ugliness was averted. My mother sent me to live with my Uncle Bill. He was the one who was responsible for introducing me to martial arts 7 years earlier. My uncle lived in Holden, Missouri, a small town where most of the residents lived on small ranches or farms on 1 plus acre parcels. My uncle was a pretty religious man who had turned to the Mormon religion and married a girl who was of that faith. I mention this because of how I felt my uncle would react to things and how wrong I was.

My uncle was short only about 5’4” tall and very muscular. He held brown belts in both karate and judo that he learned while in the Army stationed in Germany in the late 1950s. I had and still have a great deal of respect and love for him. Now back to the story; I went to school in this strange place or at least it was strange to me. The students were different than those in Oklahoma or Kansas in that they liked different things than I was used to. The boys were in knitting classes and they weren’t friendly to new-comers or maybe it was just how I remember it. I didn’t fit in; no one would be my friend. I would have to sit out in PE, since I was not chosen to play on any team and had to eat alone in the cafeteria. One of the boys kept picking on me in the line while waiting to get our lunch. He would tell me that if he couldn’t kick my butt, he’d cry, I replied by saying that he should start balling like a baby right then and there. He was not amused, but I was! One day I was in study hall in the library and was squatting down looking for a book, when this girl leaned over and asked what I was looking for. As she leaned over she was wearing a pendant on a chain and she was really cute, so for some reason, I can’t explain, I reached up and grabbed the pendant, pulled her down towards me and gave her a little kiss on the mouth. She smiled and I thought, that was a good move on my part and I was feeling sort of manly. The next day while I was sitting out as usual during PE in the gym; the door burst open and in walks this “fonzy-type” dude complete with the greased back hair, leather jacket and chain hanging from his pocket. He had a bigger friend with him and he walked over to me and said “I heard you were messing with my girl”. I said “I don’t know what you are talking about” he replied by saying that someone saw me kiss her in the library. I said “maybe you need to talk to her and not me”. I said “if she’s your girl, she’s your problem”. He pushed me and said “we’re going to fight”.

32

Page 49: 2013 January Issue

Of course by now all the kids in PE were watching and thought that this guy from high school was going to give me a beating and they were laughing and happy about it. I told the guy to go talk to her and he started to push me again and I hit him pretty hard in the side of the jaw. He went down like a stone in a deep pond. He was out and I looked at his stunned friend and said “are you next?” He said, “She’s not my girlfriend”. He helped wake up his friend and they left. All of a sudden the other guys were asking me to play on their team. I guess I was now accepted in some weird way. Things were finally palatable for me and I thought I’d be ok until the end of the school year. That was short-lived, since the one kid in the lunch line would not stop with the taunting. One day on the bus ride home he was sitting towards the front of the bus next to

his sister when he yelled back to me saying “come up here so I can kick your butt”. I said “why don’t you come back here”. He walked towards me and as he got close, I stood up and hit him in the mouth; he fell back holding onto the seat rails to keep from falling on the floor, so I continued to hit him over and over again. Blood was all over his face and his sister was screaming at me. The bus driver stopped the bus and separated us. The bus driver made me sit in the seat right behind him. I thought I was in big trouble now and my uncle was probably going to beat me up when he heard about this. To say the least, I was saddened by this turn of events.

I dreaded telling my uncle about the fight; however, as it turns out I didn’t have to, since by the time I had mustered up enough courage to tell him, the phone rang. It was the parents of the boy that I was fighting with. I listened as my uncle calmly told the man on the other end of the phone how his son kept picking on his nephew (I had mentioned a few times how this boy was picking on me). My uncle said that the boy got what he deserved. Then my uncle said something so out of character, I was a bit shocked. He told the man on the phone in an elevated voice that he’d be happy to come over and teach him manners if necessary!

33

Page 50: 2013 January Issue

My uncle explained to me that he went through something similar when he first came to Missouri and he understood what I was dealing with. Unfortunately I was asked to leave the school and my uncle had to send me back to Oklahoma to live with my mother. Of course in those days we didn’t have cell phones and quick communications. My mother had no phone and my uncle assumed I’d simply walk from the bus station to my house about 15 blocks away and be at home. I was 11 years old when I got off the bus downtown. I had an old suitcase in my hand and I headed to my house. When I finally got there, the house was empty. The family had moved. I asked the neighbors if they knew where my family moved to and they said they didn’t know. I was now on my own, with a dollar or so in my pocket, I searched for my family. It took 3 weeks to find them. I slept under small over crossing bridges and in empty train cars. I had to be very careful to spend the very minimum amount of money for food. When I did run out of money, I gathered “pop” bottles for refunds at the local store and was able to get enough money to keep going. When I finally found out where my family moved, I was very disappointed that they were living in a shack in an alley near the restaurant where my mother had recently started working. This little one room shack had tin walls and a tin roof with no kitchen sink. We had to wash dishes in the bathroom sink. I got a job at the boys club working the basket room for the gym and also mowing lawns as well as selling hotdogs at the local football games every weekend. I was able to get $60 together to rent a house around the corner that had 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. I moved the family in and we lived there until we move to California in 1967.

34

Page 51: 2013 January Issue

Of course my karate training came in handy every time I had to fight one of my mother’s many boyfriends over the years. I was a kid, fighting these grown up men that were abusing my mother and we had some pretty knock down drag out fights. I never cried and I never lost a fight, none that I’d admit to anyway. In my mind I always prevailed. I was promoted to shodan (1st degree black belt) in 1966 by Sensei Joe Spriggs, 8 years after I started training. I went from white belt to black belt and there were no color belts at all.In California, we had a fresh start and I continued to train by myself. I was afraid that if I found a karate school, it would be so different they’d laugh at me or would not even let me train. Just before I joined the Marine Corps, I had a very large and very tough fight with my mother’s boyfriend, Bob, who was a blackbelt in judo. He was an ok guy but I found some pills in my mother’s purse when she asked me to get something out of it for her. I recognized them from pills one of my school acquaintances showed me once and they were meth tablets. I confronted her and she told me that they were her boyfriend’s pills he had given to her to hold for him. I figured she was telling me the truth, since she didn’t even smoke or take any kind of medicine.

One night, I had a date, I was 16 years old and my little brother wanted to go with me on my date. I said no and told him to stop asking. All of a sudden Bob came up from behind and put me in a choke hold with both hands around my neck. I found out he was upset with me over the pill episode. At this point, I was looking at my mother’s face as I was being choked out then I reached up, released the pressure from his arm and threw him over my shoulders where he landed on his back. He instantly jumped up and hit me as hard as he could and I flew into the wall in the hall about 10 feet away. I came right back and started punching him back when he grabbed me and we flew into the lamp smashing it and as I got back up and started to continue, he said “get out”. I left and when I came home later, he met me at the door, telling me that he had been in many fights; since he was a member of the Hells Angles. He went on to say this was the best fight he ever had. He said I was a real challenge and he apologized. I accepted his apology and felt like I was finally starting to get some respect as a young adult.

I joined the Marine Corps, since I graduated from school early by taking and passing some challenge courses. My grandmother called the recruiter to talk me into joining. I did my time, spent 5 months over seas and was TAD in Okinawa in 1970 for a tournament in Naha at the Kadena Air Force Base. I took first place in kumite and in kata. I also spent some time in Cambodia on an LP (listening post) where I hurt both my knees and received an early discharge as an honorably discharged disabled veteran.

During these years, I continued my training and met my Shorin-ryu teacher in Hawaii, Miyagi Sensei. At this time there were a few known styles and as the years passed, I have noticed all of these other styles, many claiming to be around for a long time. There are those who pretend to teach mystical no-touch stuff, fancy mixtures with many pieces of pure arts and “street fighting” methods that promise to make you a killing machine.

35

Page 52: 2013 January Issue

I find it interesting that I keep hearing about street fighting as compared to a “martial art”. That is one of the silliest things I’ve ever heard, since I’ve been in many fights and it has almost always been on the street or an ally or hallway or building or sidewalk or somewhere other than a dojo. Should all these styles be called ally fighting, hallway fighting or sidewalk fighting? So many times the new-fangled styles are nothing more than parts of other proven “arts” without benefit of all the tuite’ Bunkai, kata as well as mind and body connection and time-required preparation. Sometimes a new style was designed to give some sort of power to a self-serving power hungry egotist with a narcissistic personality. In the end and after nearly 55 years of training, I believe that there are some very good combined styles and reasons for creating them, however, there is a huge void of humble, modest yet noble patriarchs of the martial arts that so many of us love!

Recovering from Hurricane Sandy

Back in November 2012 the East coast was hit by what is considered the most devastating Hurricane to ever come across our surroundings. New York was one of it's victims.

Upon hearing the forecast for the storm days prior, I as well as many at my work place just shrug it off as yet another storm like any other. Nearing the arrival of the Hurricane Sandy the forecast was more intense and new reports of its strength placed us all on high alert. So much so, my boss authorized my daughter and a few other dependents of several of my co workers to come to the safety of my work location. The need for man power was increased and an all around network of calls went into effect, in preparation of the arrival of Sandy.

38

Page 55: 2013 January Issue

My Borough of Staten Island was one that was hit the hardest. Midland Beach, New Dorp, Miller Park, Tottenville to name a few. In over 20 years I have resided here, I never witnessed such devastation from anything than what I have with Hurricane Sandy. When she hit, she hit hard. fear spread as windows were blown out out. Trees breaking in half hitting homes and cars. Power outages throughout the region and a great deal of Staten Island communities. After the storm I went home and discovered minimal damage in my immediate area, but in the surrounding areas, power outages many trees and telephone poles split blocking some of the streets., boats car, damages etc. as you can see.

39

Page 56: 2013 January Issue

Many calls were made checking on many of my friends and family members. Many I could not reach because of the lost of communications as well by many of my fellow Masonic Brothers who made the same attempts. After clearing my immediate area of trash and debris my daughter and I began driving around Staten Island. What she and I witnessed in the Midland Beach area caused me to pull over in disbelief and brought me to tears. As you can see in the pictures above that Jazmyn and I took, why. Checking around a little further, we immediately became participating in rescue and assistance. The first being delivery of water I purchased and began distributing to all that we saw on our way to assist a couple of my Masonic brothers with demolition and trash disposal.

40

Page 57: 2013 January Issue

I posted an immediate request for assistance on my Facebook timeline and the response was incredible. Relief efforts was immediate by neighbors, friends and different agencies in the area. People started calling, requesting an address for receipt supplies of clothing, water, food, blankets, etc. My Masonic community went into full recovery mode. The Staten Island Richmond Masonic Association, New York, (SIRMANY) consisting of 6 Masonic lodges on Staten Island established a receiving Station in one of the Masonic Temples located in Tottenville. This relief Operation was spearheaded by our very own Past District Deputy Grandmaster R.:W.: Robert E. Welsh of Great Kills Lodge #912 (pictured with my daughter Jazmyn).

41

Page 58: 2013 January Issue

Members of the entire district, their wives and even the children came in to assist and separate the clothing, food, baby and cleaning supplies etc. Deliveries to locations were constant to churches, pantries throughout the community. The first delivery of pods with supplies was met by an amazing desire and energy to help by many in the district. Even the Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons of the State of New York, M.:W.: James E. Sullivan (pictured above with Jazmyn), his wife Gail and Grand Marshal R.:W.: John W. Krupp, came in to assist on our very first day at the lodge.

The following are pics of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, the following day, throughout the community and other areas.

42

Page 59: 2013 January Issue

The Richmond District Masons without a second thought came out in full force to assist the community in recovery efforts, at the lodge and different locations as well. Here is a commentary of one of our youngest members pictured below;

"Members of Great Kills Lodge #912 were involved with thee relief effort. I helped organize in Tottenville on Sunday, November 4. Using Facebook, I organized a cleanup event that over 700 individuals participated in. Over 100 homes were assisted that day. The Staten Island Advance ran a story about it if you need that. I just want to point of some names that were there and made a huge difference in assisting me".

We are amazed at the response from our friends and fellow members of our Masonic family throughout the country. Donations were sent from Washington State, Wisconsin, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas etc. A very special delivery was escorted in by our Brothers from Chicago, The Widow Sons, pictured below with W.: Anthony Soscia who was also very instrumental in coordinating receipt of supplies for our community. A personal thanks to my Budo And Masonic Brother, W.: Fred Catanzariti pictured with his lovely wife, in Milford PA. Who sent in a box of clothing to us as well.

During one of our water deliveries my brother W.: Robert Parker Brown, Master of Beacon Light Lodge and I had the pleasure of meeting follow Staten Islander Teddy Atlas, former trainer of Mike Tyson, whose Foundation was out in full force assisting those who were misplaced, at a local Church in Tottenville. They also like the Masons were over whelmed with supplies as you can see. To our pleasure a local piano player came by with his dog to entertain the neighborhood.

44

Page 61: 2013 January Issue

A special mention and a great appreciative thanks to Bro. Elvis Krajev, owner of "Posh Babies" in Tottenville and member of Tompkins Lodge, who donated his valuable time and truck to relief efforts and especially the use of space in his warehouse for storage of excess clothing that we were overwhelmed with. Thank you Brother Elvis!

45

Page 62: 2013 January Issue

In conclusion, I want to thank every single contributor of time clothing, supplies, vehicles, generators, etc for everything you have provided to this relief effort. Special thanks also to the American Temple Training Union and it's Founder Sha Poe Ryu Anthony G. Elam, for spearheading the article on our efforts in last months issue of The American MA Master Magazine could only say that I am honored and a proud member of one of the most outstanding and generous Fraternities in the World, The Free and Accepted Masons. Am very proud of the Richmond District of Staten Island Masons, and The American Temple Training Union. Promoter/Matchmaker

Premier Fighting Championship

I started my MMA career as a vendor owning Need2bleed fight wear with my husband John back in 2007. At the time, I thought the sport was barbaric and couldn’t understand why 2 people would want to be closed in a cage and just beat each other. I remember going to vendor a show and NEVER going near the cage. Over time, as a vendor , I realized how important it was to help out fighters and got the understanding of how to sponsor a fighter. It was then that I got involved with going to a lot of different fight schools and camps to speak to fighters. I was AMAZED, to say the least, how hard they trained. It was in every discipline multiple times a week. It was at that stage of the game that I realized that MMA was not a barbaric men’s club, but a sport. A sport like many that is not just a pass time, but a life style. I began to understand the passion it took on so many levels to be able to put your body and mind through the pain of becoming a great fighter. I met people who are prominent in this sport that helped me grow in my understanding of how a fighter works, how they train and what makes a GREAT fighter. At that point, I knew I wanted to belong in this sport and found a passion in it for myself in the few years following that.

From there, after studying for a few years on the sport as a whole, I was ready to start managing fighters. With the guidance from some of the most prominent people in MMA in New England, I took on my first fighters. At first, it was very difficult to get the networking I needed to be an asset to my fighters but I felt with hard work, dedication and the passion I had, I could help them get to the top. It was during this time, that I realized how cut throat the business side of MMA is. The promoters, the contracts and even some of the other fight managers. I saw how difficult it was for an amateur to grow into a pro. I never

48

Page 65: 2013 January Issue

had a problem getting my pro fighters a fight, but when it came down to my amateurs, it was more than a light task. But, nonetheless, I vowed to keep pushing forward as the sport became such a chess game for me and I wanted more than anything to make sure that , fighters who I saw on a daily basis who would leave their families, leave their personal time and even some of their jobs, to grow in a sport that we saw as one of the most competitive things I have ever seen with my own eyes. As a passionate person myself, I saw the hole in which amateurs would grow to be shrinking because as the industry was growing… Promoters up in the upper parts of the region would only use local guys and not want to use fighters from Western Massachusetts because they couldn’t sell tickets from this far. That is when I decided I needed to make a change in the industry. I needed to help give fighters more opportunity to be able to fight.

That is where my story really begins.

In late 2009, I started to research how to become a Promoter in this state. At the time, the state was not sanctioned. They were however trying to get the UFC here. The UFC doesn’t do events in states that are not sanctioned so the Massachusetts boxing commission was busy trying to set in place their commissioners and had the daunting task of building its regulations. I thought, this is a perfect time for me to dig my feet in and REALLY see what I was getting myself into. I took the 2.5 hour drive (1 way) to Boston once a week, sometimes twice, to sit through HOURS of commission meetings to help myself get acclimated with the growing of a sanctioned state. I think this is where I really grasped my understanding for the sport and how it worked. It’s where I realized how important fighter safety was and what to do as a promoter and a matchmaker to help provide that.

49

Page 66: 2013 January Issue

Finally in 2010, The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission became sanctioned. I was one of the first Promoters to sit in front of the commission to get my Legal Promoters License. I was SO excited! I had one of the best matchmakers I had EVER done business, Jason Franklin, sitting by my side to get his license as the Premier Fighting Championship matchmaker. It was a proud moment for me to say the least. We walked away with the knowledge that we were ready to have our first event. With the new regs in hand, a legal license and the passion to grow in the sport, we slated our first event to go off on July 24, 2010 at the Hippodrome in Springfield MA. Premier FC made History by being the very first ALL amateur show under the Massachusetts state athletic commission.

50

Page 67: 2013 January Issue

After our first event, which was sold out, I walked away with feeling like although the night was great, I needed still to learn SO much. Over time, we grew in our fighter stable, grew in the industry and grew in our passions. However, in 2011, Jason had begun to find it very difficult with his family and other job to really focus the time and attention needed to continue as a matchmaker. We decided together to have me go for my Matchmakers license and did so in late 2011. He still to this day is in my back pocket whenever I feel I have a question. I was blessed to have him as my matchmaker and even more blessed to still have him as a friend.

The journey REALLY began after that. I knew how much time it took with Promoting and matchmaking, but I didn’t know how MUCH time with holding both licenses. I have a good friend Mike Polvere who is also a duel license holder as a great person who helped guide me in the beginning to stay on track. I thought, as my first REAL go around it would be GREAT to have an ALL amateur tournament. Again, my passion for being a Promoter/matchmaker was to help grow amateurs who were not getting a fair shake in their sport. I planned a 4 fight over 20 week tourney. WOW… did I bite off more than I thought. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. The physical and emotional strength it took not to fall apart during this time was intense. The fighters were asked to stop their lives focus on the almighty championship. The commission was asked to step back and although stand by me with my regs, let me grow this and see where it goes.

51

Page 68: 2013 January Issue

In April of 2012 Premier FC made history again by doing the first all amateur tournament and having it go to season. It was GREAT. These fighters stepped up. I’m not going to say it was always smooth… I had a fighter not show up to weigh INS and I had a fighter get injured so he couldn’t go on in the tourney. It was difficult, it was almost grueling at times, but in the end, we had AMAZING champs. These guys REALLY showed how powerful the mind is when beating their own bodies up over and over to get what they had dreamed. As a promoter, every hour I put in, as a matchmaker every hour I put in, as a friend to these guys and their families and as an MMA fan myself… although exhausted in the end, I was SO happy and thankful to EVERYONE involved.

I guess so far in this busy career of mine I have learned a lot of valuable lessons. I have learned as an MMA fan that this is one of the best sports and communities I could ever be involved in. I have learned as a fight manager that no matter how hard you push these amazing athletes, they push back even harder and show me how powerful one’s mind can be. As a promoter, I realize how difficult it is to make everyone happy and that at the end of the day, I can only live each minute 1 at a time, learn from it and move forward in hopes that the next one can only be better. As a matchmaker, I have learned that EVERY fighter has a family, a life and a story. That at the end of the day, those people in that life look at me to keep their loved one and friend safe and I take that task VERY serious. As a business owner, I have learned to say with all seriousness, what the word sorry really means and that the check is in the mail.. (Ha-ha).

52

Page 69: 2013 January Issue

I would like to thank SO many people who have helped me grow in this sport that I am learning in every day! There are a few top that really have helped me and pushed me forward to help Premier Fighting Championship become successful.

First, my family. My husband and kids have been AMAZING through my LOOONG hours as I have grown Premier FC. Having another full time job besides this has taken me away from my loved ones for almost weeks at a time but they have all been supportive and great!

Also, a small list of the many I have to thank but these people have really stuck by me and helped me in a time of need and growth.

Marco Alvan of Team Link,Gladiador Santos of Gladiador BJJ, Jason Franklin ,Steve Rita, Barbara Santiago, DJ Dube, Skylar Wesch, John Wesch, Sharon Mitchell, Annish Haynes, Mike and Carolyn Lally, Tony Carderella, Brett Charco, Scott Beiler, Matt and Beth Roy, Ryan Quinn, Sarah Payant, Joe Lennard, Jeremy Reipold, Travis Sinclair, Tracey Jarvis, Ricardo Funch, Tommy Marcellino, Mike Polvere, Pete Dilorenzo, FCAT, the mass commish , EVERY sponsor of Premier fc, and MANY MANY more who REALLY have stepped up and grown with me. Premier Fc is not about me or my licenses to carry it. It’s about the team of people who LOVE this sport and I cannot thank you all enough for helping us grow in this sport we all love!!

1. I was born in 1979 in the city kafir Saba and lived in the city netanya .

2. My mother said that she is the one who pushed me into martial art in order to stay away from the street and not to get involved with the bad influence environments .

3. My martial art life was influence from the great basics of judo, full contact karate but finally shaped by the art of jujitsu in the world jujitsu federation, it gave me the perfect basic to train wonderful and complete martial art and shaped my way of teaching. The most influence method that changed my conception of self Defense was KRAV MAGA which I first saw and practiced in the IDF as a KRAV MAGA instructor, then by a mistake I have meet a great KRAV MAGA grand master named as " Eli Avikzar" , Imi's best students who founded the Krav Magen ISRAELi, known as K.A.M.I who add and changed the KRAV MAGA techniques according to him experience and other martial art influence and created a new style hat was stunned me and absolutely convinced Me that this is what I want to do or the rest of my life.

4. In my eyes, KRAV MAGA in most sophisticated from its simplicity. It's a smart combat system that the main idea is not to concentrate on how it looks, you should ask your self all the time if this is the most natural movement or behavior? Will I, he, she, they do that in realty and most important, if its affective to all of the society spectrum.KRAV MAGA isn't a martial art discipline at all, we do not treat it like an art but sometimes when I look at he complete picture of training, I can realize that mastering the real life situation and creat a life saving solution is the actual art in the KRAV MAGA.

5. Me and ravid Mr ravid schimko are working in security academies. we train and teach every day between 6-8 hours a day and train average of 100 security personals a day.

6. In the short time we are working on the 2013 European Instructors course that will take place in Madrid Spain and to expend our self more and assist to establish new Imkm groups around Spain and Europe. We realized that somehow people afraid or hesitate to teach KRAV MAGA to children which we think its wrong and children are the future and we should give them the right self defense tools. In these days We dedicate our self in on designing the junior old children syllabus according to the official IMKM syllabus and required from us min 2 hours a day training and rethinking and by the next future we will set a junior or KRAV-kids special instructors course and to open a new kids groups around the world.

7. When we started to shape the Imkm guiding lines we started to ask each other annoying questions like "why you do this" or "why you put your leg here and not there?" At first we where very angry on each other but then we realized that this is what was missing to us all our life. when we asked a deep technical question we always answered as " this is what we do and keep practice it..". When you practice keep asking as much as you can to understand exactly why you do what you do, and if the answer doesn't satisfied you, keep exploring by your self and get to the right answer for better understanding even if finally you your conclusion Leeds you that Te technique is wrong and then ask again..

Hello everyone,

For those of you that missed this year's FMS Faultline Warrior Classic Championships, boy did you miss out. This was one of my favorite FMS tournaments. The competition was great. Tremendous support from all our good friends and FMS family. Special thanks to GM Rubi Navarro, Sensei Reed, GM Pulido and all the extended family that brought students, brought their energy and talents to make this a memorable occasion. Of course none of this would have been possible without the amazing FMS family starting with Master Schleeter, Inst. Boyd, Inst. Matulich, Inst. Moore, Inst. Kelso, Inst. Ferrito, Inst. Ameral, Master Terry King, Mr. Staley and the army of FMS family that were there.

The action was hot as we had several new divisions this year including the gladiators division where students picked two weapons each, and found one round with those weapons, then switched traded weapons with each other for a second round. Man that was fun to watch. The grappling action was great as were the forms and fighting divisions. One of the students competing was no other than the Mayor of Hollister, who also just so happens to be an FMS student (and here I thought Master Schleeter was the mayor of Hollister...). What an awesome display of skill and good sportsmanship. GM Linda Pulido was so inspired by all her students winning, that on the spur of the moment she decided to join in the women's black belt fighting division, which turned out to be continuous sparring. She did a tremendous job and took first place.

As usual after a full day of competition, we retired to Casa Schleeter for some great food, drinks and family company. Oh, did I mention we had the latest UFC fights, with GSP defending his title against Carlos Condit. Man was that a great event, filled with awesome fights. Too much fun.

On Sunday, we did a special FMS black belt camp, where we worked on advanced staff drills and techniques, demo practice for our Korea trip next year and a great session on FMS cane (dan jang sul). We had so much fun, just working on dozens of techniques from the inside and outside wrist locks with the cane, as well as so much more. Too much fun.

CONTRAST Surati MINISTER Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Contrast) himself will write to the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security related oppression that plagued GKI Taman Yasmin church in Bogor. "The police should have a minimum, they should have their limits in order to save lives," he said. Contrast assess a role for the law enforcement officers to make a hot conflicts like this. "There is uncertainty in our police force, they failed to protect, they are consumed by the economy and local politics. For those who are weak and have no political power, that enemy of the state. They did not bother to sacrifice a small community," he said. "Actually, of all the answers, we actually like doing more, we have to take it all. Highest institutions of law in this country already spend MA and the Ombudsman's decision as well. Less anything else," he complained. Haris also lamented the case with the GKI Taman Yasmin congregation has now become the international spotlight. "All I know this case has become an international concern. Would we take it to existing mechanisms, this means that we remain on the mechanism of the law," he said. The international community itself knows this case, following the arrival of Secretary-General of the World Council of Churches, Walter Altman who visited the church on Tuesday 11 October. Walter Altman also had a conversation with church leaders and already know how the problem. REPORTED TO INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COURT Prohibition against worshiping congregation of GKI Yasmin Church in Bogor, West Java by the local city government, continue to bring strong reactions from various circles. Islamic youth organizations also savor City Government action. Youth Movement (GP) Ansor, which is a youth organization under the umbrella of NU. GP Anshor even threatened to report the case to the International Human Rights Court. Chairman of GP Ansor Nusron Wahid, some time ago, issued a strong condemnation to the Bogor Mayor Diani Budiarto that does not comply with the ruling of the Supreme Court to unseal the GKI Yasmin Church. According to him, it has violated the basic rights of its citizens freedom of conscience, religion and worship, as guaranteed in the state constitution (Article 29 of the Constitution 45), and in the covenant of civil rights and political government of Indonesia has ratified. Therefore Ansor GP will report the matter to the International Human Rights Court, to investigate and help resolve the problem, until the GKI Yasmin congregation can worship with a decent run, and not on the pavement again. "Ansor will bring this issue to the International Human Rights court level, because this part of the high level of human rights violations," said Nusron, as reported Liputan6.com early October. Further Nusron who is a Member of Commission XI of the House of Representatives of the Golkar Party, also requested that the Bogor Mayor uphold basic human rights in worship according to their religion or belief, and also must protect the entire religious community. Freedom of religion and worship is a basic human right, which must be upheld all citizens, including the mayor. Mayor as local officials must protect and provide shelter to the religious community, "he said.
