Remember the slow, old, ugly iikeyclub.org? Not anymore. Thanks to the help of

Technology Chair Akhil Sarikonda, not only has our District been fortunate enough to add

an ‘Anonymous Comment Box’, but an entire facelift. Our District is proud to announce

the ‘new ‘ iikeyclub.org with the same, familiar tabs you’re used to (Club Monthly Report,

etc. under Forms) as well as much more in a user-friendly interface.

What if I want to use iikeyclub.org on my phone/tablet? Will it look the same?

The new iikeyclub.org molds, or transforms to the fit of your device.

Camp

Camp Beautification

Day: June 11th, 9-2

Camp Visitors Day:

July 11th, 11-1

A handful of extremely devoted Key Clubbers from

the Chatham-Glenwood H.S. who’ve devoted their

time to beautify Camp Independence through

constructing picnic tables. Can you spot Lt. Governor

Abby Kauerauf in this photo?

Throughout the Summer, we as a District have been fortunate to develop close bonds with

the Spastics Paralysis Research Program. A program new to the Illinois-Eastern Iowa Spastics Research

program this year, Camp Independence, has been unveiled with flying colors. At Camp Independence,

in Ingleside, IL – north of Chicago, children a wide range of mental and physical ailments come

together for a week of teambuilding and fun. How do we as Key Clubbers play a role in their well-

being? As servant leaders, we have had the option to volunteer our time at the camp both June 11th

and July 11th for various projects.

On June 11th, many Kiwanis Family members from Illinois and Iowa were able to come together at

Camp Independence for the 2nd Annual Camp

Independence Beautification project.

On top of this tremendous accomplishment,

on July 11th, even more Key Clubbers, Circle K

Members and Kiwanians alike met for a

Luncheon and tour of Camp Independence.

Hello, Key Clubbers! My name is

Maria Palazzolo, and I have just

been elected as one of the eleven

International Trustees for our

organization. I am so thankful that

the members at the International

Convention gave me this

opportunity, and I am excited for

this upcoming year. The

International President will be

giving me three different districts to

advise for the upcoming Key Club year. While the three

districts will most likely not include the Illinois – Eastern

Iowa District, I will still be working with you guys because

you are my home district, and I love you all!

The three goals that I hope to implement as an

international trustee are to increase DCON attendance, to

create a program for orphaned Key Clubs, and increase the

awareness level of Key Club both locally and internationally.

These three goals are based on the actions that my club

took to become more active in the district and our

community. The ideas helped us, and I am hoping that by

helping governors and lieutenant governors implement

these ideas, the clubs will grow in membership and service.

Like I said, I am so excited for this upcoming year! If you

have any questions or just want to talk, my email is

[email protected]. Have a great year, Key Clubbers!

Hello I-I District Clubs!

Volume I, Issue 3 Illinois –Eastern Iowa District Secretary July 2013

Novak’s News

The 2013-2014 school year is just around the corner! I hope

you all are looking forward to the next year of service. One of the best

ways clubs can prepare for events, activities, and service projects is by

communicating with your Lieutenant Governor. On one of the next

pages is the contact information for the District Board. If you haven’t

talked to them lately (or at all), shoot them an email and ask for their

help; its what they are there for. If you don’t know which division

your school is, just email me at [email protected].

Additionally, to be fully prepared for the school year, every

club should submit a Club Officer Roster. A club officer roster is a sheet

of the contact information for the Board Members at a Key Club. It

helps us keep in contact with you throughout the year to give you help-

ful information about events and projects.

Filling out a Club Officer Roster is very easy! All you have to

do is fill out the excel spread sheet titled “Club_Officer_Roster” that

was attached to this email. It is also available on the district website

and being distributed by Lieutenant Governors. When you’re done,

just send it to me at [email protected].

Don’t know if your school has turned it in already for the 2013

-2014 school year? No problem! On the next page, there is a list of the

schools that have already turned it in. Our District is aiming to have

all of the Rosters in by the deadline, 9/9/13.

Thank you all for giving back you your communities!

Yours in Service,

Graham Novak

PAUER PRESS DISTRICT TREASURER NEWSLETTER

I hope you’re all enjoying your summer

break! I assume everyone is enjoying the

splendid sunny days by now. Personally, I’ve

been enjoying my summer so much that I’ve

sung Summer Nights from Grease a few times

(not well though).

The I-I district board convened for our

annual June meeting more than a month ago

and I’m proud to say that this Key Club year is

off to an incredible beginning! Not only do we

already have some new clubs chartered, but I

also achieved a goal of mine (along with much

help from Governor Will)—get the budget

approved! With quite a few revisions to the

budget prepared for last year, the new 2013-

2014 district budget has been approved by the

district board. This is a great accomplishment!

Feel free to contact myself or anyone on the

district board if you would like to know more

about the 2013-2014 district budget.

Since we’re speaking about budgets,

over the summer club treasurers should begin

to create a responsible budget for their clubs.

This can help the club organize the available

funds and prevent overspending. In this edition

of the newsletter, you’ll find important tips on

creating a club budget. If I can help in any

way, shape or form, feel free to contact me. I'll

be more than happy to help.

Together in service,

Alex Pauer

If any of the clubs in your division are on this list please make sure that they submit dues ASAP! Not paying dues means risking the club’s charter and losing a great opportunity to serve their community! I plan to send out an email to the clubs listed above, concerning their unpaid dues, in the near future. If you or your clubs have any questions about submitting dues or believe they have already submitted their dues, please don’t hesitate to contact me, I’m only an email or a phone call away. Refer to the contact information listed at the bottom of the page.

Dues deadlines to keep in mind:

November 1st Early Bird deadline

December 1st Final deadline

These dates may seem a lifetime away, but they’ll

sneak up on you very quickly! Be sure your clubs

know when/how to submit dues! I’ll send out quite a

bit of tutorials, how-to’s in the near future.

HOW TO:

CREATE A BUDGET

CAPTION YOUR PHOTO HERE

INSERT TEXT OR LOGO HERE. www.website.com

1. GATHER AND COLLABORATE EVERY EXPENSE SHEET YOU CAN FIND FOR YOUR KEY CLUB.

Since most Key Clubs have been in existence for a while, it probably won’t be too hard to find various budgets or

expense sheets. These can serve as guides for your new budget and can help you make tough decisions based

on decisions made in the past.

2. ESTIMATE THE AMOUNT OF MEMBERS IN THE CLUB.

The best way to estimate the amount of members in your club is to take a three year average. Basically just take

the average amount of members for the past three years and average them. Also, keep in mind if there are

increasing or decreasing patterns in the amount of members. Consider this trend when finalizing an estimate.

3. TAKE NOTE OF EVERY OTHER SOURCE OF INCOME.

If your school gives you a bit of funding each year to run Key Club; that’s great! Be sure to record that onto your

budget. Make sure every source of income is listed.

4. LIST YOUR CLUB’S ANNUAL EXPENSES.

This step may be the most difficult. Make a list of what your club usually spends money on and approximate how

much your club will need to spend on it. This is where the old budgets and expense sheets come in handy. If you

have those, you can use them as a guide to how much you should allot for each item. Be sure an advisor is

present when listing these expenses.

5. TOTAL YOUR INCOME AND EXPENSES.

This may be the easiest step. Just add them up!

6. ADJUST ANY VALUES AS NEEDED.

If your club’s expenses exceed your club’s income, that’s not good. It’s time to cut down on spending. See if

there are areas where your club could save money. In order for a budget to well...be a budget, the expenses

must not exceed the income. If your club’s expenses do not exceed the income, then you can either leave it, or

allot additional money to certain items.

And that’s it! You’re done! Thought it would never end, right? Make sure you look over your budget one more time to make sure all the values are correct and reasonable. Once the budget has been approved and set in place, be sure to review it on a regular basis to ensure that it is being followed and your club is not overspending.

Technology

Update July 2013

Akhil Sarikonda Technology Chair

THE NEW II DISTRICT WEBSITE IS LIVE AT IIKEYCLUB.ORG, CHECK IT OUT! TECH CHANGES IN THE FUTURE

Hello II Key Clubbers,

My name is Akhil Sarikonda, the 2013-2014 Illinois-Eastern Iowa District Technology Chair. I look forward to serving you all this coming year by assisting with any type of help your Club needs related to technology and renewing the current technology that is used in our District.

This year you may have already noticed some drastic changes with the II District website. The new website at iikeyclub.org is completely redesigned to provide more compelling information in a visually appealing manner. Look forward to finding many new resources on this website throughout the year. Additionally, if you would like to request certain documents or information to be added to the website, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 630-270-6211. I would also love to get any feedback on the website, so that I can make the necessary changes!

Also, as the Technology Committee Chair, I would like to encourage clubs and divisions to further make use of the various free Google resources that exist. Organizing your club online is one way you can further enhance your club because in today’s day and age everything is going digital and access to internet is much easier. If you are interested in making this work for your club, feel free to contact me so that I can assist you in this process.

Are you trying to make a website for your club? Then, make good use of the many free resources that will help you do so such as webs.com, weebly.com, and wix.com (some of the highest rated free website builders).

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions!

Yours in Service,

Akhil Sarikonda

Google Forms Throughout the month, Statistical Secretary Natalie Walgren and I will be working together to produce new Google Forms that are simplified and innovative. We hope to reduce the forms to make clubs submit information that is relevant for us to have.

Google Groups

Along with Secretary Graham Novak, I will be creating new Google Groups for Club Presidents, Secretaries, Statistical Secretaries, Treasurers, and Advisors so that it is easier to communicate information to the intended group of people. Be on the lookout for invites to the Google Group that are going to be sent out in the near future.

I-I District Project: What is Spastic Paralysis

What is Spastic Paralysis? It’s not a lone disease, but a series of them

(Alzheimer’s Spina Bifida, brain tumors, etc.), and they cause the central

nervous system to function incorrectly. Our District has raised money for

Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation every year since 1977. The

foundation was founded by Kiwanis, an organization that we work with a

ton! Our District alone has I-I District raised $35,000 for the foundation. This

year I-I District has a goal of raising $40,000 for Spastics! We need YOUR

help to reach this goal. I will be giving each division a personalized goal

for the year (which your Lieutenant Governor will be relaying to you).

Remember, that is a goal; we want you to go ABOVE and BEYOND those

goals! If we all work together, we can reach our goal for Spastic Paralysis, which actively seeks cures to Spastic Paralysis.

Hey Mighty I-I District!

I would first off like to thank you all for your

hard work and dedication to raise money for

Spastic Paralysis this past year. Together, we

raised a little over $35,000, which is outstanding!

Be on the lookout for your personalized

club goals! I am very confident that you will all

reach those goals, and even go above and

beyond them. Keep up the great work and

together we will reach our 2013-2014 goal of

$40,000!

Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Membership Development Chair on the I-I District Board. I am so excited to hear

from you! Some people think you have to be a Board member or a Club Officer

to start a new club, but this is certainly not true. Anyone can start a new Key

Club! So start thinking about your friends that go to other schools, get them

interested and contact me to get started on building a fantastic new Key

Club!!

Want to know how to recruit new members?!?!

The Key to new membership is attitude! If you are trying to recruit new Key

Club members you have to obtain a positive attitude. These potential members

are most likely nervous about talking to you so make them feel comfortable by

engaging them in an easy conversation. Be their friends’ first, then make them

feel like they are a part of something bigger, everyone wants to feel like they

belong!!

I would like to invite the youth leaders of your school to join a national youth leader training program called Key Leader. Found-ed in 2005, Key Leader is an international program in 7 countries and 39 states- and still growing.

Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today's young leaders. This life-changing event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development skill. A Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of leader-ship—it comes from helping others succeed.

Participants begin by attending a Key Leader conference, which is a weekend retreat. Large and small group workshops, dis-cussions and team-building activities take place over the course of the weekend. Students have opportunities to learn leadership skills that will help them to change their schools, communities, and world for the better. While ex-ploring leadership in a whole new way, participants will make amazing new friends and have experiences they will never forget. Positive, ongoing interaction with other Key Leader graduates offers continuing reinforcement, encour-agement and growth of leadership skills.

In April of 2014, the second Key Leader confer-ence will be held at East Bay Hudson Camp in Bloom-ington, IL. More than Key Club members are invited! Lead-ers of clubs, student organizations, and sports ages 14-18 are encouraged to attend. Registration information will come out in the fall. Please contact us with any questions you might have.

Awards

General Awards Info

As everyone knows, awards

are a great way to earn recognition

for your club and get your name out

there. Once again this year, the I-I

District is offering many awards

including distinguished

officers/members, Connect the K’s

award, and the Spastics Paralysis

award. The applications (you can fill

out as many as you want!) are pretty

simple to fill out, and then all you

have to do is mail the applications to

either Mr. Hall or Mylinh Tran by the

dates listed in the box below. They

will be ready sometime around the

middle of September, so be on the

lookout!

Annual Achievement

Report

The Annual Achievement

Report is a required report that gives

both our district and Key Club

International information about the

demographics of your club what

your club does to help your

community. And, the best part is,

your school could earn awards and

recognition on both the district and

international levels! If this sounds like

a good deal to you, be on the

lookout for the form on our district

website, iikeyclub.org under the

awards tab!
