SESSION OVERVIEW

Opening Keynote: Building Cathedrals – The Power of Purpose

Building Cathedrals - The Power of Purpose is based on a story that has been told for over 300 years that illustrates the most successful people in life and business are those of purpose. The authors have traced the origin of this life-changing story to the world’s most famous architect, Christopher Wren who was commissioned to rebuild St. Paul’s Cathedral after the fire of 1666 that devastated London. In their thought-provoking book, the authors dissect the leadership qualities of Wren and revisit the fire of 1666, examining its redemptive qualities to London to our present lives as well. They introduce a “Cathedral” as a powerful metaphor of personal expression of purpose, encouraging us to find our “Cathedral” and to help others find theirs. The bricklayers provide a foundation for a refreshing look into employee engagement, corporate culture, and the dynamics that occur in today’s organizations. Included are true stories of people who are building “Cathedrals” after having experienced “personal fires,” but who, like London, have emerged better and stronger. Objectives:

Describe the leadership qualities that enable modern-day organizations achieve peak performance Understand team dynamics that occur in organizations Understand the relationship between the power of purpose and organizational effectiveness Identify specific steps to enhance employee engagement List the characteristics that enable us to emerge stronger and better after our own “personal fires.”

1A Strategic Track – Keeping them Happy: Deferred Compensation Plans for Key Employees

Discover various qualified and non-qualified plans that are available to attract, retain or reward key employees for consideration when developing and negotiating employment contracts. Get a good understanding of what plan types may be available and their applicable limitations. Learn how to design these deferred compensation plans for these key employees, and take a look at two case studies demonstrating real opportunities.

1B Total Rewards Track - Save More for Tomorrow – Practical Behavioral Finance Solutions to Improve Retirement Plans

Half of the American workforce lacks access to a retirement savings plan. Approximately one-third of those who do have access fail to join. Those who do join tend to save too little and often make unwise investment decisions. In short, the defined contribution world is in crisis and employees need help. Based on the book by Professor Shlomo Benartzi, this session will analyze the behavioral challenges that led to this crisis, which include; inertia, loss aversion, and myopia. In addition, we will explore the behavioral best practices that can be used to overcome these obstacles as outlined in “Save More Tomorrow.” The research and science in this book provides the behavioral tools and insights necessary to encourage employees to participate, save more and save smarter. A prime example of behavioral finance in action! Objectives: Introduce/educate the general behavioral finance principals from Professor Shlomo Benartzi’s book Save More Tomorrow and application of the PlanSuccess audit.

1C Employee Relations & Organizational Development Track - HR Leadership Role in Managing Faculty and Staff Disruptive/Abrasive Behavior

This presentation will address the challenges of managing those hard-to-deal with faculty and staff whose disruptive and abrasive behaviors create conflict in campus settings: the classroom, meetings, and other workplace environments. Various strategies for improving these stressful situations will be offered. Objectives:

Offer insight into root causes of disruptive/abrasive behavior Provide audience with opportunity to share their experiences/challenges Suggest strategies to manage these challenging employees and minimize conflict in the workplace

2A Strategic Track – Strengthening Leadership Development and Succession Planning Practices in Higher Education

Aon Hewitt recently conducted a survey of higher education institutions to identify the state of talent management practices, trends, and key priorities. Strengthening leadership development and succession planning practices was a key priority. This presentation will focus on practical examples and practices to improve leadership development and succession planning.

2B Total Rewards Track - Designing a Competency Based Model for Performance Management

Over the last several decades, academic research as well as tangible experience has shown that organizations with performance management initiatives perform better than their peers. These initiatives have not only improved traditional performance measures, but also increased customer satisfaction, employee engagement, employee productivity, and collaboration. Most institutions of higher learning utilize tools to ensure that their overall goals are consistently being met, yet fail to impact employee performance sufficiently. This session will examine several key performance management approaches with a specific focus on competency-based methods. Specifically, our discussion will focus on measuring key performance drivers, developing competency models, and evaluating individual and team performance. In addition, various approaches to integrating rewards will be included. Participants will leave with a strong understanding of the value of performance management, detailed knowledge of how to develop a competency-based methods, and key lessons learned from other institutions.

2C Employee Relations & Organizational Development Track – “You Can Be the Difference in making your College a Great Place to Work!”: Case Study regarding UofL’s Great Places to Work Initiative

In 2008, the University of Louisville elected to participate in the Chronicle of Higher Education Great Colleges to Work For survey – posting an overall satisfaction among faculty and staff of 66%. Our President and Provost launched the University’s Great Places to Work initiative (GPTW) to find ways to make UofL a better workplace for faculty and staff and set an institutional score card goal of achieving an honor roll satisfaction level of 75% by 2020. In 2009, overall employee satisfaction dropped from 66% to 64%. In 2010, overall employee satisfaction dropped from 64% to 62%. What happened and why did a well-intentioned initiative, supported by the executive leadership team, produce disappointing results in its first two years? This presentation is a case study regarding UofL’s Great Places to Work Initiative and outlines strategies the University employed to reverse its downward trend and improve employee satisfaction from 62% to 67% in 2012 – under the joint leadership of the Vice President for Human Resources, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, and Vice Provost for Diversity.

3A Strategic Track – Perception is Reality: The Importance of Pay Fairness

Both an organization's total rewards architecture and its culture can impact the way employees perceive the "fairness" of their pay. In addition, external forces like an employee's friends, family, and coworkers can influence perceptions. The increasing availability of salary data over the internet provides yet another point of triangulation as an employee considers the "fairness" of his or her pay. But if we know that we have designed fair and equitable compensation programs, why should we care about perception? In this session Mark Szypko will discuss Kenexa's latest research on the relationship between perceptions of pay fairness and employee engagement. Focusing on key drivers of employee perceptions of pay fairness, they will discuss what compensation leaders and organizations in general can do to improve these perceptions and maximize engagement across the organization.

Objectives:

Why employee perception of fair pay is important to your organization How both an organization's total rewards architecture and its culture can impact the way employees

perceive the "fairness" of their pay What compensation leaders and organizations can do to improve these perceptions and maximize

engagement across the organization

3B Total Rewards Track - Automating the Benefit Enrollment Process

In this session, participants will learn how to transform the way your institution manages your benefit program. Participants will learn how various cloud-based portals available in the marketplace today can support online enrollment, employee communication, benefits education and HR management for all benefits. The session will examine new technologies and ways they can be used to help you offer a comprehensive, fully automated benefits program while engaging and educating your employees.

Objectives:

Provide an overview of enrollment technology and various options available Give insight into what employees and administrators can gain in using these new technologies Answer any questions regarding automating the enrollment process and its overall effectiveness

3C Employee Relations & Organizational Development Track – Revolutionary Learning: Where Theory and Practice Collide

Searching for a way HR can fit into the academic mission of the institution and not be seen as merely an administrative function? Learn how two institutions’ HR departments actively worked with the academic side of the house to help graduate assistants and HR students gain “real world” experience in the campus HR office. Presenters will share details of the various projects and lessons learned. During group discussion, session participants will brainstorm possible projects or challenges in taking this idea back to their institutions. Learn to recognize the benefits of tapping into partnerships with faculty and students and leave the session with tools to develop an internal program on your campus.

Closing Keynote: Widening the Lens of Diversity

Often times when we hear the word diversity we think race. However the lens of diversity is much larger than race. Diversity must include gender, socioeconomics, mental and physical abilities, language, sexual identity, ageism, ethnicity as well as race. By the end of this presentation participants should be able to talk about diversity through a large and inclusive lens.
