Ron Holmes was named McMurry University’s director of athletics March, 15, 2009. He oversees the 19-sport intercollegiate athletic program thathas built a reputation for one of the most successful programs in the nation.

HEAD COACH BARBARA CROUSEN

BARBARA CROUSENHead CoachWomen’s and Men’s Track & Field16th season

Barbara Crousen has established herself as a “trail blazer” and a leader inthe world of track and field. She is also the architect of the McM track andfield dynasty.

Crousen also holds the distinction of being the first-ever female – in anysport and at any level - to coach a men’s team to an NCAA national cham-pionship (when she won the men’s outdoor title in 2008).

In 2013, Crosuen guided the McMurry men’s team to runner-up finishes -both indoor and outdoor - at the National Christian College Athletic As-sociation (NCCAA) championships. The War Hawks’ women’s team wasthird at the NCCAA Outddoor meet. Individually, men’s shot putter PaulDavis won indoor and outdoor titles, had a school-record effort of 69’ 03/4” and placed fifth in the nation at the USA Track & Field Champi-onships.

Crousen also led the War Hawks’ men’s team to the 2012 NCAA III Out-door National Championship, the second in school history and bothunder her guidance. She will go down in McMurry history as the firsthead coach to lead a team of any kind to a national championship afterguiding McM’s men to that NCAA III Outdoor National Championship in2008, since it began intercollegiate athletics competition in 1923.

Since taking over the program in the summer of 1998, Crousen hashelped McMurry become a consistent track power in the region and na-tionally.

Since her first season in 1999, Crousen led the men’s team to 14-consecu-tive American Southwest Conference titles (1999-2012), exiting the con-ference in 2012 having never surrendered the men’s championshiptrophy. The McM women’s team won 10 ASC championships (1999-2004,2006-2009) under Crousen’s guidance.

During that time, Crousen was named the ASC’s men’s Coach of the Yearall 14 seasons and was named the women’s ASC Coach of the Year 10times.

In 2012, Crousen received the nation’s highest honor for the second timewhen she was named as the Men’s National Coach of the Year for NCAADivision III. She was also named the men’s NCAA III South/Southeast Re-gion Coach of the Year, marking the ninth time she has earned thathonor.

Crousen earned NCAA Division III Women’s National Coach of the Year in2001, as well. The women’s program finished fourth overall at the na-tional outdoor meet in 2001 and followed in 2002 as the national runnerup.

He is just the second head cross country coach in school history, following his mentor Bill Libby.

As a coach, Chandler has enjoyed success on the course with both the men's and women's teams. The men's team has been to the NCAA Re-gional meet all seven seasons under his direction and the men were the ASC runner-up six times.

In 2013, 3000-meter steeplechase compeitor Lauren Peery blasted past the previous McM mark, posting a new record of 12:09.82 minutes. In-doors, the women’s 4x800 relay quartet set school records for both indoors and outdoors. The men’s 4x800 set a new McM outdoor standard in2013, as well, placing ninth in the NCCAA meet. Sophomore Michael Dowd re-set his own 10,000-meters record at the War Hawk Classic(32:44.71).

On the track in 2010, Chandler saw distance runners Alaisha Guerra and Ken Wheeler each set outdoor school records for McMurry. Guerra's timeof 41:59.78 in the 10,000-meter race April 1 was a new school record and Wheeler's time of 3:59.88 broke a six-year record on April 16 in San An-tonio. In addition, Wheeler won the 2010 individual ASC title in the 1,500-meter run.

On the cross country course, Chandler saw Guerra win her first individual ASC title at the championship meet in 2011, and finish All-Region forthe second year in a row. She also was Academic All-American. Carla Lewis won her second individual ASC title at the championship meet in2009, and she went on to become the first female in school history to advance to the national meet after an eighth-place finish at the regionalmeet.

In 2006, he helped the women win their first ASC Championship in school history and when Lewis won her first ASC Championship. That year, the men placed fifth in the NCAA Regional meet and the women finished 13th.

In 2008, Chandler saw junior Ken Wheeler make the NCAA Division III national meet; it was the first runner under Chandler's watch that advancedbeyond regionals and the second in school history. Chandler's teammate Josh Hufstedler was the only other McMurry athlete to make nationalsin 1999. Wheeler finished 153rd out of 280 runners, the best placing in school history and he set the school's 8K record at nationals with a time of25:54.31.

Chandler was a four-year letterman in cross country as a student at McMurry before graduating in 2000. He won the ASC individual cross countrychampionship in both 1998 and 2000 and helped the men's team to an ASC Championship in 2000. 2013 IN REVIEW

The 2013 track and field season was one of transitionfor the McMurry University programs, as the schoolbegan its first season as a transitional member inNCAA Division II (after achieving unprecedented suc-cess in NCAA Division III the previous 14 seasons).

In her 15th season at the War Hawks’ helm, McM headcoach Barbara Crousen guided a youthful roster thatsported just five seniors between the men’s andwomen’s squads. The McM women welcomed backthree athletes who competed at the 2012 NCAA IIIchampionships. The men’s team returned eight mem-bers from its NCAA III national championship team of2012.

Unable to compete at the NCAA II championshipswhile the McM athletics program is in transition (andnot a full member), the War Hawks instead were a partof the National Christian College Athletic Association(NCCAA) championships for both indoor and outdoor.2013 was McMurry’s inaugural year as members of theNCCAA. The meets provided the programs with aglimpse of future NCAA II foes – like perennial NAIApowers Azusa Pacific, Shorter and Fresno Pacific –which, like the War Hawks, are NCCAA competitorswhile making the transition to NCAA II.

“The NCCAA meets were very good competition,” saidCrousen of her first encounter with the organization’smembers. “But that’s not too surprising when you lookat the teams that were competing. Many of thoseschools have outstanding histories in track and field.

“I think it also gave our athletes a bit of a glimpse ofsome of the teams they will likely face in the NCAA Di-vision II championships down the road.”

On the women’s side, the first season of NCCAA com-petition yielded a total of nine all-American honors. The War Hawks placed sixth at the indoor champi-onships and third at the outdoor finale.

Indoors, the 4x200 relay team – consisting of Paradise Hooper, PurityHooper, Tiana Alexander and Shanita Coleman – finished second toearn all-American status. The group was clocked in a time of 1:43.41.

Outdoors, the War Hawk women hit their stride, earning eight NCCAAall-American finishes…including four national championships.

Individually, Coleman won the women’s 400 meters and sophomoreMariah Steinbock won the women’s pole vault. Additionally, the 4x100and 4x400 relays each ran their way to NCCAA championships. The4x100 – Paradise Hooper, Coleman, Alexander and Purity Hooper –posted a school-record time of 46.49 (eclipsing the previous record of46.59 set in 2002) in its victory. The 4x400 was comprised of three of

the four members who ran the 4x100, with the exception of freshmanJasmine Williams (who replaced Alexander in the quartet) and set anNCCAA national record.

During the regular season, McMurry’s women won two team titles, taking top honors at both the Texas A&M University-Commerce Invita-tional and the Heartland-McMurry Invitational.

Junior Alyssa Fields earned NCCAA Scholar-Athlete status, as well.

As for the McM men, the group was the national runners-up – both in-door and outdoor – in its initial season as NCCAA members. The War Hawks’ were able to lay claim to three NCCAA crowns indoors,

CLEARING THE HURDLES - Sophomore Willie Poindexter earned the first three all-American awards of his McM career in 2013, taking a third in the 400-meter hurdlesand with both 4sx400-relay teams.

picking up eight All-Americans, overall. Junior thrower Paul Davisgave a foreshadowing of what lay ahead for him in 2013 by winningthe shot put with a school, and NCCAA, record attempt of 62’ 1”. Davisalso placed third in the weight throw and was named as the NCCAAField Events “Outstanding Performer,” as well as participating in theUSA Track & Field Indoor Championships.

Joining Davis with national championships was his brother JajuanAustin in the high jump, along with freshman Desmond Williams in thelong jump. Williams’ winning effort of 24’ 4 ½” was also both a schooland NCCAA meet record.

All-American placements were registered by Dillon Wilkins, with a sec-ond in the triple jump (an McM record 48’ 0 ½”), Trevon Odom with athird in the 200 meters, Isaac Hamilton with a third in the long jumpand the third place 4x400-meter relay team (Chevante Bell, WilliePoindexter, Odom and Lance Andrews).

Outdoors, Davis not only won the outdoor shot put – again setting theNCCAA meet record and again named the NCCAA Field Events “Out-standing Performer” - but also won the discus. He again earned a slotin the USA Track and Field Championships in the shot put, this timeplacing fifth outdoors as the highest-finishing collegiate competitor inthe nation. In the USATF Southwestern Association Championships amonth earlier, Davis broke the McM school record in the shot for thefourth time during the 2013 outdoor season, tossing it an eye-pop-ping 69’ 0 ¾”. He was also featured in the Sports Illustrated “Faces in theCrowd” section (May 6 edition).

Sophomore Chris Ogle notched the teams other NCCAA individualchampionship, winning the triple jump.

Individually, Grayson Morrow finished second in the pole vault toclaim his all-America award. Poindexter (400-meter hurdles), Austin(high jump), and Hamilton (long jump) all placed third in their respec-

tive events to earn NCCAA all-American accolades. Likewise, the4x100 relay (John Keith, Odom, Williams and Victor Cruz) was secondand the 4x400 (Cruz, Poindexter, Odom and Andrews) was third.

Zach Frazier was recognized as an NCCAA Scholar-Athlete.

The men’s team earned three regular season team championships in2013. The War Hawks topped the competition at the McM War HawkClassic, the Hardin-Simmons Invitational and the Heartland-McMurryInvitational.

“I was proud of not just how the teams responded in competition, butalso off the track, as well,” said Crousen. “These young ladies andyoung men carried the War Hawks name with pride and were goodambassadors for McMurry University. To me, that’s every bit as impor-tant as trophies and medals.”CRUZ CONTROL - Freshman Victor Cruz got his collegiate career off

on the right foot, earning all-American honors with McM’s 4x100 and4x400 relays.

MAKING A SPLASH - Distance specialist Lauren Peery - who was alsothe War Hawks’ top women’s cross country runner in 2012 - set aschool record in the gruelling 3000-meter steeplechase. Peery loppedoff more than 30 seconds from the previous mark when she ran a12:09.82 at TAMU-Commerce.

DOUBLE VISION: - McMurry’s women’s trackteam was bolstered by the addition of identicaltwin sisters Paradise and Purity Hooper in 2013.The freshman duo had opponents rubbingtheir eyes thinking they were seeing double, asthey earned three National Christian CollegeAthletic Association (NCCAA) All-Americaawards - including two championships - in theirfirst collegiate season...and all in the sameevents (of course!). The pair earned their firstall-America honors with the War Hawks’ 4x200relay team at the indoor championships. Theyfollowed that up by each running legs on boththe 4x100 and 4x400 relay quartets that wonNCCAA titles during the outdoor season.

Regarding student-athlete well-being, the FAR works with in-

stitutional offices to ensure that student-athletes are healthy

and succeeding academically. The FAR works with the Stu-

dent-Athlete Affairs Director and Athletic Academic Resources

Coordinator (AARC) to help athletes prepare for academic

success & life after college. The FAR also nominates out-

standing student-athletes for NCAA & conference awards.

Emily Germany (center) - a former student-athlete at McMurry

- serves as the school’s Athletic Academic Resources Coordi-

nator. She is the contact, resource, and mentor to all student-

athletes in regards to their academics. Some of the services

include, but are not limited to:

• Monitoring academic success utilizing a time management

system, student-athlete progress reports, and midterm reports.

• Creating improved plans when student-athlete fails quizzes,

tests, or do poorly on papers, progress reports, and mid-term

reports.

• Assisting student-athletes with utilizing time management

skills and a variety of study strategies.

• Assisting with locating appropriate offices on campus

that manage class registration, career services, financial

aid, student payment plans, work-study, drop/add forms,

change major forms, etc.

Reverend Bill Libby (right), a former coach and director of

athletics at McMurry, is the Student-Athlete Affairs Direc-

tor and responsible for fostering growth in the “life skills”

of the young men and women who don the War Hawk

colors.

Rev. Libby works with individuals on such important as-

pects of college life as time management, interpersonal

relationships and utilizing campus resources, to name a

few. The goal is to have these same techniques being

practiced in college, be put to use later in life.

McMurry University’s student-athletes have tremendous resources

available to them to help ensure not only their academic success,

but to help prepare them for achievement in the “real world” after

graduation, as well.

Under the leadership of Dr. Joel Brant (left), McM’s Faculty Athlet-

ics Representative, a three-person team works to make sure that

each student-athlete has all the “tools” needed to reach their maxi-

mum potential.

In September of 2009 President John Russell appointed Dr. Brant

to serve as Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). The FAR is a

position required by the NCAA and generally represents the institu-

tion to the NCAA (in conjunction with the President & AD). The

FAR position has two main areas of responsibility: academic in-

tegrity and student-athlete well-being.

In the realm of academic integrity, the FAR serves as an independ-

ent voice in the athletics administration. The FAR works with the

AD and Compliance Coordinator to ensure that NCAA rules are

being adhered to. The FAR works with the President & AD to en-

sure that all athletic policies conform to or support the institution’s

mission.

TRACK & FIELD FACILITIES

Wilford Moore Stadium, originally opened in 1937, was re-named in 2007 after one of themost successful football coaches in McMurry history. The Stadium is home to not only thetrack team, but also McM’s football team.

After pressure from the NCAA led to McMurry’s decision to drop its “Indians” nickname in2006, then Indian Stadium needed a new name, as well. Moore was the deserving choice forthe namesake of the football and track facility.

Moore coached McMurry for several years but was the head football coach from 1947-54when he led the Indians to a 48-25-5 record, guided the program to four conference champi-onships and was named the Texas Conference “Coach of the Year” in 1948, 1949 and 1953.His winning percentage of .610 is the highest among all the head coaches in McMurry his-tory with a minimum of 20 victories.

Moore’s stadium dedication ceremony took place in May of 2007 less than a year after theuniversity added a brand new track surface and new artificial turf in a $1.6 million project tooverhaul the surfaces.

McMurry successful track and field program also calls Moore Stadium home. The track pro-gram boasted greats like the late Bill Miller and 17-time all-American Hann Ollison. Ollisonhelped lead McMurry University to the first team national championship in school history in2008 by winning the NCAA Division III Outdoor crown.

In the spring of 2011, McMurry debuted the Bobby Lee Carter Throws Complex to the east ofWilford Moore Stadium. There, the War Hawks will have a hammer, discus and javelinthrows area.

The War Hawk men brought home another NCAA III outdoor track championship in 2012 -behind the efforts of senior “Outstanding Performer” Kevin Cunningham’s pair of titles in the400 and 400 hurdles - adding another title for the Moore Stadium occupants.

Following the school’s most accomplished football season and first-ever NCAA playoff berthin 2011, a $2.2 million renovation that included a new press box and private suites, conces-sion area, restrooms, events deck, elevator, entry concourse and chair-back stadium seatingwas completed in the fall of 2012 and the facility re-dedicated that September.

Although the site once held 4,500 people, reduced seating now has the stadium’s capacity at3,550 fan-friendly seats. The facility plays north and south for football with home seating onthe west side. The stadium is located on campus just south of South 14th Street on RossStreet, with ample parking located both adjacent to the stadium and in surrounding campuslots.
