With the wide array of golf courses in close proximity to the Fresno State campus, Bulldog golfers have the opportunity to refine their skills on Fresno’s finest courses, all of which offer a variety of challenging layouts and conditions. “Fresno State is fortunate to have the opportunity to play excellent golf courses within 25 minutes of campus,” women’s head coach Angie Cates-Moore said. “Having such a wide variety of courses to play affords us the opportunity to choose the course that will best prime us for the next tournament. This is a huge advantage for our players.” “We’ve got the short courses and the long courses. We’ve got hills, courses with big greens, small greens and

extremely fast greens,” men’s head coach Mike Watney said. “These are all conditions you must be familiar with to develop your game to its highest potential.” Fresno State golfers develop their potential by playing the following different golf courses regularly; Belmont country Club, Brighton Crest Country Club, copper River Country Club, Fort Washington Country Club, Fig Garden Club, Riverbend Golf Club, River Park Golf Center, Riverside Golf Course, San Joaquin Country Club, and Sunnyside Country Club. The men’s golf team will host the Fresno State Lexus Classic at Fort Washinton Country Club March 5-6 and the women will host their Fresno State Lexus Classic March 12-13 at Copper River Country Club.

The Bulldogs tee off the spring season in San Diego, Calif. at the Farms Collegiate Invitational. The ’Dogs will then travel to La Quinta, Calif. to compete in The Prestige at the PGA West, Greg Norman Course.

Following the first two spring tournaments, the Bulldogs host the Fresno State Lexus Classic at the Belmont Country Club. The Fresno State Lexus Classic will be held on March 4-5 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The ’Dogs hit the road again as they travel to compete in the Bandon Dunes Championship, Cal Poly Match Play Championship, Western Intercollegiate and Winchester Invitational.

The Bulldogs close their spring season at the MW Championship in Tuscon, Ariz. where they have the potential to take home the victory.

“I’m really looking forward to the spring,” head coach Mike Watney said. “I love our schedule and I love this team. It is always hard to get to the postseason but this team certainly has the skills to win the MW championship and to advance to the postseason. Plus, another thing I like is that 100 percent of the team is on track to graduate. It is the same will to excel that propels student-athletes to college degrees and conference championships.”

As the men’s golf team wraps up its 2012-13 season, they will say goodbye to the strong leadership and skill of four seniors including Rufie Fessler, Johnny Partridge, Jack Mulroy, and Rich Gilkey.

“I’m proud of these four seniors,” Watney said. “They have led by example. They are dedicated student-athletes and are all on track to graduate.”

HIGH HOPES AS ’DOGS ENTER SPRING SEASON

AS THE FRESNO STATE MEN’S GOLF TEAM WARMS UP TO TEE OFF ITS SPRING SEASON, THE ’DOGS REFLECT ON THEIR FALL SEASON AND HOPE TO BRING HOME THE BIG VICTORY IN 2013.

2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW

With the return of seven members from the 2011-12 team and the addition of four new players, the Bulldogs kicked off their first season in the Mountain West Conference and proved they have the ability for a championship title. The team is anchored by senior Rufie Fessler and junior Nate Jessup, who are tied for fifth place in the MW ranking, and freshman Troix Tonkham, who also sits in the top 20 of the MW ranking.

The Bulldogs opened up the fall season with their best team finish at the St. Mary’s College Invitational in which they took fourth place. Jessup and Tonkham both had their best season finish at the St. Mary’s College Invitational. Jessup shot even par and tied for eighth place and Tonkham shot one over par and tied for 10th.

The Bulldogs continued their fall season in Fairfax, Calif. at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by No. 1 Cal where Fessler took a top 10 finish. The Bulldogs then traveled to Stockton, Calif. to compete in the Pacific Invitational. The Bulldogs battled on the course and Jessup fired his best score of the season with a nine under par, 207.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the spring season in paradise at the Warrior Wave Intercollegiate in Kauai, Hawaii at the Princeville Golf Course.

The Bulldogs face a full spring schedule with seven tournaments including their host tournament the Fresno State Lexus Classic.

“We’ve had a solid fall,” head coach Mike Watney said. “Nate and Rufie both averaged 71+ for four tournaments. However, I feel there is a lot more that these guys and the whole team can accomplish. We’ve had four different guys shoot 65 or better in tournament qualifiers. That is some major firepower that we haven’t had for a long time.”

1990 squad to the best finish in Fresno State golf history - a fifth place showing at the NCAA

Championships.

The members of Watney’s golf teams have suc-ceeded academically as well. Since 1989, 19 All-American Scholars have been named under him. In addition to coaching numerous Academic All-WAC honorees, he tutored 1996 Academic All-American John Barrington.

Watney’s influence on collegiate golf has brought the NCAA Championships to Fresno in 1983 and the NCAA Western Regional as well in 2000. A member of the Professional Golf Association for 18 years, Watney has numerous coaching honors to his name. He was chosen as the 2007 inductee into the GCAA Hall of Fame. He was named the Southwest Region Coach of the Year in 2002. In 1996, 2000, 2003 and most recently 2010, he was honored as WAC Coach of the Year. He earned Big West Coach of the Year honors six times in the 1980s and was named NCAA District VIII Coach of the Year for the first time in 1987, and then again in 1994.

Watney is also recognized internationally, serving as a liaison between Japanese and U.S. golf. He accompanies six of the Unit-ed States’ best collegiate golf teams (four men’s and two women’s) to Japan annu-ally. As the tournament director of the Topy Cup, Watney is in charge of everything from pairings to com-petition rules. He has served as chairman of this now prestigious tournament since 1996. He also has welcomed a miniature tournament with Keio University in Japan for the last few years.

Many of the players Watney has produced have gone on to succeed on the PGA Tour and throughout the golf profession. Watney’s neph-ew Nick, a three-time All-American who also played golf for Fresno State, is a star on the PGA Tour who has captured four PGA tournaments, including the WGC-Cadillac Championship and AT&T National in 2011, and the 2004 Nationwide Tour Championship. Former Bulldogs and brothers Kevin and David Sutherland are also experienced PGA Tour players. Todd Rose, Joe Acos-ta and Tim Loustalot, all students under Watney, went on to play professionally as well. There are also numerous former Bulldog golfers who work at Valley courses, including

Mike Paniccia, Mike Schy, Ed

Luethke, Eric

Peterson, Paul Wightmen, Ken Collins and Todd Hansen.

While attending Fresno State as a student, Watney was a golf standout who earned honorable mention All-American honors in 1973 as well as first-team all-conference accolades. Watney is also a 1969 graduate of Bullard High School in Fresno where he competed in football and golf.

After graduating from Fresno State, Watney served as an Assistant Golf Professional at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, Calif. One year later, he returned to Fresno and served as an Assistant Golf Professional at Belmont Country Club. He then joined the PGA Tour in 1978, where he had two mini-tour victories and several top finishes.

Watney and his wife Paula have four children, Josh, Kelly, Heidi and Dustin. Josh played golf for Fresno State from 1997-2000. Watney was born Jan. 6, 1951 in Los Angeles.

MIKE WATNEYHead Coach Mike Watney entered his 35

season at Fresno State this year and has re-ceived many honors during his time here, but

the one received in 2007 may be his best. In Janu-ary of 2007, Coach Watney was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame. When asked about his success, his answer came

with no hesitation.

“It’s the players and the community. Our team has been blessed with outstanding young men who were also excellent golfers. Fresno State is a truly great school with awesome people and this community is the friendliest place on earth. It is where my family and I want to live and working here has been a joy. I’m humbled, honored and grateful to the GCAA for this award.”

Watney most current honor came in November 2012 when he was inducted into the Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame.

As the Fresno State head coach, Mike Watney has established a level of excellence and

tradition. From winning conference championships to coaching All-Americans, Watney has propelled Bulldog golf into a nationally prominent and highly competitive golf program.

A 1973 graduate of Fresno State, Watney became the head coach of his alma mater in 1979. In his first season coaching the Bulldogs, he led his team to a conference championship and a 12th place

finish at the NCAA Championship, which laid the foundation for future Bulldog golf success.

The 1987 season was one of Watney’s fin-est as his Bulldog squad was named the

Jones Sport Co. Most Improved Team in the nation after finishing the season

ranked third nationally and placing ninth at the NCAA Championship.

In 1994, Watney coached a five-man lineup comprised of two juniors, two sophomores and one freshman that won Fres-no State’s first golf WAC Championship and saw former `Dogs Joe Acosta and Jon Bettencourt fin-ish first and second. The Bulldogs went on to tie for second place at the NCAA West Regional.

Throughout his time at Fresno State, Watney has tutored 29 All-Amer-

icans. His squads have captured 12 conference

championships, including six consecutive titles from

1986 to 1991. He led his team to Western Athletic Confer-

ence titles in 1994, 2000 and 2003. His teams have qualified

for 16 NCAA Championships and 17 Western Regionals in the 23

year history of the championship qualifier, including 15 appear-

Men’s golFSEASON IN REVIEW

FALL SEASON Upon securing his victory of the Outlaw Cup over Labor Day weekend, Bulldog Brian Sunker entered his final fall season with the men’s golf team. The Bulldogs began their fall season at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash., where the tournament was shortened to only 18-holes due to extreme weather conditions. The ’Dogs took full advantage of the shortened tournament and placed in a tie for sec-ond place.

The Bulldogs then traveled to the beautiful south shore of Lake Tahoe to compete in the Wolf Pack Classic. The ’Dogs returned to action just two weeks later at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Senior Bhavik Patel finished the tournament in the top ten with a tie for seventh place. The Bulldogs wrapped up their fall season with the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif. Sophomore Nate Jessup fired his lowest round of the season, a three-under, 68 and helped the ’Dogs finish the tour-nament even-par, 284 with an 11th place. The ’Dogs ended their fall season on a high note with the third-best score in the final round of the tournament.

SPRING SEASON The Bulldogs teed off the spring season in paradise at the John A. Burns Invitational in Hawai’i. Sunker wrapped up the tournament by firing his lowest round of the season, a two-under, 70. The Bulldogs then traveled to Southern California and competed in the Pepperdine hosted North Ranch Intercollegiate.

The ’Dogs finally returned home and opened up March with their tour-

nament, the Fresno State Lexus Classic. The Bulldogs battled scat-tered showers and high winds in the final round of their home tourna-ment and finished in 12th place.

The next couple of tournaments took the ‘Dogs south where they com-peted in the Callaway Farms Invitational, hosted by University of San Diego and the Lamkin Grip Match Play Challenge, hosted by Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. The Bulldogs posted a 5-0 victory over Utah State in their first match at the Lamkin Grip Match Play Challenge and held off Claremont to close out the day. The ’Dogs proceeded to the champi-onship round in which they lost to Seattle University. The Bulldogs then competed at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. where Rufie Fessler led the ’Dogs in a tie for 14th place. Fessler closed the month of March as he was named WAC Golfer of the Week.

The ’Dogs final tournament before the WAC Championship ended with a 10-over, 874 and Winchester Classic team title. The Bulldogs also saw a top 20 finish from five athletes.

The Bulldogs concluded the spring season at the WAC Championship in Henderson, Nev. at the Rio Secco Golf Club. The ’Dogs 2011-12 season came to an end with a third place finish at 22-over (287-301-298--886). Sunker, competing in his final tournament of his collegiate career, made his first career hole-in-one in round one and finished the tournament in a tie for 10th place. Sunker’s final round even-par made him eligible for the All-America Scholar award. Nate Jessup took the top spot for the ’Dogs by tying for 8th. The third Bulldog to place in the top 10 was Jack Mulroy who joined Sunker in a tie for 10th place.

INDIVIDUAL HONORSFRESNO STATE LEXUS CLASSICThe Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic began in 1964 under the direction of former Fresno State golf coach Larry Pape. From 1967 through 1974, seven of the eight Classic individual champions went on to PGA stardom. Stanford’s Tom Watson won the title in 1969 and USC’s Craig Stadler won back-to-back championships in 1973-74. Fresno State won its first Classic in 1973, led by All-American and current head coach, Mike Watney, who finished one stroke behind Stadler. Other big names that have competed in the tournament include Johnny Miller, Ray Leach, Bobby Clampett, Scott Simpson, Willie Wood, Billy Andred, Arron Oberholser, Mike Springer, Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney and Tim Norris. Fresno State has claimed a total of six team championships and six individual championships in 43 tournaments throughout the years. In 2002, Nick Watney became just the sixth collegiate golfer to win back-to-back Classic titles. He joins the likes of Jerry Heard, Craig Stadler, Mike Brannan, Bobby Clampett and Sam Randolph.

Fresno State Athletics has been working closely with a nationally renowned consultant, a broad-based President-appointed ad hoc committee, and the Offi ce of Civil Rights to remedy all past gender equity issues and create at Fresno State a model Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletics program relative to Title IX compliance. Several projects have been completed to date, including a state-of-art aquatics venue, and construction scheduled for another cornerstone project, a sports medicine center.

Fresno State’s competitive level continues to be among the leaders in conference and regional play, and several teams have achieved national

rankings. Since 2005, conference championships and advancement to NCAA Championship competition has been achieved in the sports of women’s basketball, track & fi eld, women’s soccer, baseball, women’s golf, softball and men’s and women’s tennis, with four enjoying a Top-20 national ranking, and baseball capturing the 2008 National Championship. Additionally, Fresno State student-athletes have advanced to post-season competition in the sports of football, men’s basketball and equestrian. The success of Bulldog student-athletes led Fresno State to three Western Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cups in a fi ve-year span (2007-08, 2008-09 & 2011-12). Additionally, Sports Illustrated’s SI.com ranked Fresno State the nation’s 18th most accomplished NCAA Division I athletics program for 2007-08.

Prior to his arrival in Fresno in July of 2005, Boeh spent the previous 10 years as the Director of Athletics at Ohio University, where he led the program to exceptional levels in numerous categories and earning numerous conference championships.

In 2001, The Sporting News ranked Ohio’s department 32nd among the 115 NCAA I-A institutions, the highest ranking of any non-BCS program. The ranking included evaluations for competitive success, fan support, integrity and equity. Ohio earned an “A” rating in graduation rates and NCAA compliance and posted an eight-year high graduation rate of 73 percent in 2004.

Under Boeh’s leadership, Ohio was extremely aggressive in its efforts to achieve gender equity and compliance with Title IX. Three women’s sports programs were initiated during Boeh’s tenure, and in 2004 The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that Ohio ranked second nationally among all NCAA I-A institutions relative to the equity of men’s and women’s sport program expenditures.

Additionally, numerous women’s facilities were constructed; sports budgets were restructured and decision-making procedures were reorganized to establish what Boeh refers to as an “authentic gender-neutral environment.” Annual fundraising totals rose more than 500 percent and Ohio Athletics concluded the University’s Bicentennial Capital Campaign by exceeding its $10 million departmental goal.

Some of the more visible changes on the Ohio campus during Boeh’s tenure were the facilities for student-athlete support services, practice and competition. In all, 44 facilities saw major renovation or new construction and Ohio’s athletics physical plant was recognized as being among the best and most effi cient in the Midwest.

In addition, Boeh served a term as the Mid-American Conference (MAC) representative to the NCAA Management Council, the NCAA’s

most prestigious governing body for athletics administrators. Boeh also served as the chair of the MAC Athletics Directors’ Group and member of the MAC Executive Council.

Prior to his tenure at Ohio, Boeh served as Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs at Northwestern University, overseeing areas such as development, marketing, ticket operations, sports publications, media services, game management and broadcast properties. Boeh also led the popular “Expect Victory” campaign, Northwestern’s fi rst-ever multimedia marketing effort.

Preceding Northwestern, Boeh served the University of Maine as Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Administration and Development. He also spent time in a variety of roles with the Big Ten Television Network, The University of Illinois, and his alma mater, Loras College of Iowa.

The Chicago-area native received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education with a minor in History at Loras in 1981, and a Master of Science degree in Athletic Administration from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1988.

MEDIA/PHOTO CREDENTIALSRequests for media/photo credentials should be submitted online at gobulldogs.com/media at least 48 hours prior to the event. Priority is granted to full-time employees of media entities that cover Fresno State athletics on a regular basis, which includes coverage of press conferences, open practices, home and road games, and to visiting media members. Freelance and amateur photographers not on assignment are not eligible for photo credentials, except by prior approval from the Fresno State Athletics Communications Office. Credentials may be picked up in the Athletics Communications Office prior to the day of the event.

Note: Web sites that sponsor message boards, message centers or chat rooms where people are allowed to post anonymous information will not be issued credentials. If a medium has an online site that sponsors these anonymous forums, they may continue to receive credentials under its traditional medium (newspaper, magazine, radio, television), but will not be granted additional passes for online staff.

PHOTO REGULATIONSPhotographers may walk around the perimeter of the playing areas, but not on the putting greens or tee boxes. Still photographers are asked to remain a reasonable distance so

shutter sounds do not distract the golfers while they swing. The Fresno State Athletics Department reserves all commercial and non-commercial rights to the use of film, videotapes and still photographs of its athletics events, student-athletes, staff and facilities.

INTERVIEW POLICYRequests for interviews with student-athletes and coaches should be made through the Fresno State Athletics Communications Office and should be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure availability. The Fresno State locker and training rooms are closed to the media.

WEEKLY RELEASEFresno State’s weekly release and statistical package is available in a PDF format on Fresno State’s website at gobulldogs.com the week of each event.

RESULTSComplete team and individual statistics/results will be provided to each member of the working media. After the conclusion of the event, final results will be made available via Fresno State’s website at gobulldogs.com. Media members wishing to receive them via email are asked to contact Steve Weakland prior to event day.
