General Guidelines – Grade 4
Paper/Pencil Test
• A writing test booklet must be returned for all grade 4 students enrolled in the district and must contain:– a response; – indication the student was
administered an Alternate Assessment; or
– a reason the student was not tested.

Two sessions
• Two consecutive days• 40 minutes each
Flexibility during the 3-week window
• Recommend avoiding Mondays and Fridays• Recommend scheduling early in the window
Make-ups are required

Preparing Testing Locations
Plan ahead – check schedules.
Prepare testing location – remove visual aids/clues.
Provide blank scratch paper for students who wishto pre-write on paper.
Post a TESTING IN PROGRESS sign.

Test Security for Test Administrators The test prompts are not to be viewed by anyone
prior to test administration. The NeSA-Writing test prompts may not be copied. No coaching or feedback of any kind with regard to
the test content should be provided to students. Talking or sharing of responses should be
prohibited. Move around the testing site and ensure that
students are following instructions. See test administration manual for comprehensive
test security information.

Labeling Test BookletsPreID Labels (Grade 4 Only) – plain white
• Student data is taken from NSSRS.• Eliminate the need to fill in information on answer
sheets.• Embedded PreID data overrides information on
answer sheets.District/School Labels – orange stripe
• Intended for students without PreID Labels.• Use label and fill in demographic information on
answer sheets.Do Not Score Labels – blue stripe
• Please contact CIA office if you have special circumstances requiring Do Not Score label.

Labeling Test Booklets
School personnel must check labels for correct information and affix labels to answer sheets.Destroy labels containing inaccurate information before affixing to answer sheets.Do not attempt to remove incorrect labels from answer sheets – instead cover with the appropriate label.Do not write on labels.If a PreID Label cannot be used, use a District/School Label and fill in the demographic information on answer sheet.

Labeling Test Booklets
Place Student PreID Labels, District/School Labels, and Do Not Score Labels on the front of the test booklet in the designated area ONLY.The preprinted Blank Barcode indicates a test booklet is completely unused.

Completing Writing Booklets – Grade 4
Paper/Pencil
• All entries on a writing booklet must be made with a No. 2 pencil.• Do not take writing booklets apart! Writing booklets
that are disassembled cannot be scored.• You will need to make copies for local scoring and
appeals, but are not to take the booklets apart.

Not Tested Codes – Grade 4
Paper/Pencil
• Complete the field on page one of the test booklet indicating the reason a student was not tested.
IMPORTANT! All entries made in a NeSA-Writing test booklet must be made using a #2 Pencil.

Alternate Assessment
The NDE does not provide an alternate assessment for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities (1%).
• Districts are to assess Alternate Assessment students locally.− Grade 4 - Return a test booklet for the student and
indicate the student was administered an alternate assessment on page one of the booklet.

Accommodations – Grade 4
Paper/Pencil
• Accommodations for grade 4 students with IEP or 504 Plans and English Language Learners must be reported in the Accommodations field on page one of the test booklet.

Transcription Instructions
Grades 4, 8, and 11 – Paper/Pencil or Online
• One red envelope labeled “NeSA-Writing Transcription Envelope” is provided for each school. • Attach original student responses to writing test
booklets containing transcribed responses or printed copies of responses transcribed online and return with test materials to DRC. (See page 12 of Test Administration Manual for additional details.)
• Return red envelope whether used or unused.

Foreign Language Responses
Grades 4, 8, and 11 – Paper/Pencil
• Spanish translated test booklets which include the test instructions, rubric self assessment tool, and the writing prompt are available from DRC.• All students responding in Spanish or another foreign
language must do so in an English version of the paper test booklet. • Complete the field on page one of the test booklet
indicating the student responded in a foreign language.

Test Format – Braille & Large Print Districts are authorized to create Braille and large print
versions of the NeSA-Writing tests.
• Must be securely destroyed at the end of testing. For Grades 4, 8, and 11 – Paper/Pencil testers
• For student responses transcribed in a paper test booklet – indicate the student was administered the test in a Braille or large print format in the Test Format field on page one of the test booklet.
