A River of Time Commissioned Work Prologue(Organum)I. Perception( lowingthroughacurvedlens)II. Memory(abrokenglassshattersbacktogether)III. Convergence(fromthesynthesisofpastandfuture, thepresentemerges)Epilogue:ThePersistentIllusionofTime
I have become fascinated in recent years by the idea of timeandthescienti icstudiesthatcontinuetounravelonlydeeperlevelsof mystery about the nature of time. Once thought to be anunyieldingandconstantmeasure, timewasdisplacedby relativitytheory as being bendable and subject to gravity. Contemporarystudies in physics seem to indicate that at the smallest andmostfundamental levelsof theuniverse, paths thatwillbe taken in thefuture effect the paths of the past, rendering any perception ofcausality empty. Most recent thinking on the nature of timesuggests that the very concept of time may arise with ourconsciousness, proposing the (somewhat unsettling!) idea that akey component onwhichwe base our experience of theworld issimply an apparition. This gives aphorisms about watched potsnever boiling, watched clocks never ticking, and time lyingwhenyou’rehavingfunawholenewmeaning!Italsoleadstothefurtherunsettlingideathatanythingandeverythingweperceivemayhaveno basis in any objective “reality” and that there is only ourperception. This piece is a re lection and meditation on these thoughts. This work is constructed on a set of interval cycles that isestablished in the Prologue through an imitative melody on aconstantrhythm. Here, anhomagetoorganumre lectstheideaofhumans—through all but themost recent history of time—as theconstant of the universe. (“Organum” is a centuries‐old musicalgenrethatfocusedonaconsistentmodeofrhythmandthe“perfect”intervalsof4ths,5ths,andoctaves.) Movement I focuses on time as linear, but warped andinconstant— lowing forward, but faster, slower, and blurred.MovementIIallowsthemusicalmaterialsonwhichthepieceisbuiltto low backwards just as, at a level we can not perceive in theuniverse, the future seems equally likely to low toward the past.MovementIIIisconstructedfromthefundamentalmusicalmaterialoverlapped onto itself, rendering the passage of time a vacantconcept. Finally, in the Epilogue, the original opening melody recursagain, but accompanied now by the overlapped beginning andending of the cyclical musical materials, signifying the idea thatthough our perception goes on as it ever has, it goes onwith theknowledgethattheprogressivepassageoftimemaybenothingbutillusion.
