Pacific Lutheran University is proud of KPLU’s many successes and contributions—providing information and entertainment to the largest audience of any station in the Pacific Northwest, and to thousands of online listeners worldwide. KPLU’s thought-provoking special series, expert news coverage, and award-winning jazz and blues lineup reflect PLU’s commitment to lifelong learning, community service, and appreciation of music with a uniquely American heritage.

This annual report celebrates another stellar year for KPLU. The radio station’s achievements are made possible through the generous support of those who listen, the business community, local and regional foundations, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and in-kind support from Pacific Lutheran University. Your partnership is an investment that guarantees the independence and integrity of KPLU’s programming and supports its goal of enriching life in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Sincerely,

Thomas W. Krise, Ph.D. President Pacific Lutheran University

I became General Manager of KPLU less than a year ago, in February 2013 after spending almost 12 years in senior administration at American Public Media and Minnesota Public Radio.

Fiscal year 2013 was a significant transition year for me and my family and for KPLU/Pacific Public Media. Eight months of the fiscal year was under the watch of long-time public media leader Paul Stankavich, who retired from KPLU in January of 2013. His careful guidance and deft understanding and planning for the multi-platform

future has put KPLU/Pacific Public Media in an ideal place in this time of significant turbulence for broadcast media and journalism. I am so pleased to report that KPLU is incredibly well-positioned to build upon the many accomplishments the KPLU team has built over its 47-year history.

KPLU’s service and many achievements are made possible through the generous support of those who listen, the business and corporate community, local and regional foundations, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and in-kind support from Pacific Lutheran University

Thanks for listening and supporting KPLU. We couldn’t do this work without you!

Best wishes,

Erik NycklemoeGeneral ManagerKPLU/Pacific Public Media

Every week, over half a million people listen to KPLU on the radio and through digital streaming. More than 250,000 visit KPLU’s website and its social media sites.

KPLU has more than 30,000 members in the Puget Sound region and from around the world.

In December, KPLU spearheaded its first-ever Public Radio Day—a collaboration with four other Northwest public radio stations—a year-end fund drive in which a winter “warm kit” of a hat and gloves would be donated to a homeless shelter (through United Way) for every $120 pledge. As a result of the five-station effort, nearly 1,200 warm kits were distributed to people in need. KPLU surpassed its fundraising goal by almost 100%.

News and JazzKPLU News hired for three positions: Martha Kang as Online Managing Editor, central to maintaining www.kplu.org as a dynamic, real-time news and jazz resource; Ed Ronco as Morning Edition producer, working with the host to take the show to the next level including reporting and breaking news; and Katherine Banwell as the new local host of Weekend Edition Saturday.

KPLU News is committed to exploring the needs of minority and other diverse audiences, including:

LAW AND JUSTICE - an in-depth feature on mothers in prison who’ve lost the rights to their children; gun violence; local reaction to the Supreme Court striking down the Defense of Marriage Act.

YOUTH AND EDUCATION – the annual homeless count and homeless students; a two-part series about getting kids’ attention in the classroom; a food aid program for students; a conversation with a psychologist following a school hazing incident, about what schools, families and the community can do to stop it.

BUSINESS AND LABOR - workers picketing for higher hourly wages; how the lack of federal funds impacted people and places in the Pacific Northwest during the government shutdown; a Seattle architect who gave up his practice to provide food and clothing to the homeless full-time.

SPECIAL REPORTS - a three-part series on issues important to city voters; a profile of “Foodball” on the Olympic Peninsula which collects significant amounts of food and money for the needy.

SPECIAL REPORTS - a three-part series on issues important to city voters; a profile of “Foodball” on the Olympic Peninsula which collects significant amounts of food and money for the needy.

ELECTION SERIES - “A Leading Question,” in which the KPLU News team profiled the nine Seattle mayoral candidates by asking them to relate a time when his or her leadership was tested; and “Tourist in Your Own Town,” a series of sound-rich, in-depth reports on special places throughout the region with a special history and strong sense of place.

KPLU’s 2013 mentoring project pairing Western Washington high school jazz bands and professional jazz musicians culminated in the release of KPLU School of Jazz – Volume 9. Each year’s CD raises money for the schools’ music programs.

KPLU presented a sold-out live radio musical at Nordstrom Recital Hall in downtown Seattle—the fourth installment of the adventures of Jimmy Jazzoid, the brainchild of Midday Jazz host Dick Stein.

AwardsKPLU received many awards for its coverage during the past year. The highlight was for KPLU’s 2012 pre-election series, “If it’s legal…Five ways pot could affect your life.” It won a number of awards: National Edward R. Murrow Award presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association; the National Sigma Delta Chi Award for Public Service in Radio Journalism presented by the Society of Professional Journalists; and the National Award presented by Public Radio News Directors.
