2013annual report

board president

Greetings to all the members of our Zoo family! I have just completed my first year as

President of the Board of Trustees. You may have noticed the name change from Board

of Directors to Board of Trustees. I asked for this change because it places an important

emphasis on who we are: trustees who are entrusted with the care and well-being of

the animal population, dedicated staff, and the beautiful grounds which make up the

Sacramento Zoo.

You’ve probably heard about the many successes of the Zoo in 2013, including record

attendance, the addition of many engaging zoo babies, and the progress of fundraising

for the new Small Wonders of Africa habitat. In 2014, we look forward to the completion

of this important project, as well as a number of additional changes to the Zoo – all the

while keeping the small, family-friendly feeling that we all cherish.

One of the great successes of

2013 has been the Quarters for

Conservation program. It has

allowed us to contribute over

$100,000 to habitat conservation

in a number of African and Asian

locales. The message here is simple

and clear: Habitat Conservation =

Species Preservation. While the

tragedies of hunting and poaching

are the highly visible causes for loss

of rare and endangered species, by

far the greater danger is habitat loss

through agricultural expansion and

deforestation. The extinction of even

a single species should not be tolerated, and that loss can never be reversed.

Thank you for your loyalty and continued support of our Sacramento Zoo. I promise that

we, the Trustees, will continue to do our best to carry on the trust you have given us.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

Board President James Naify

The Sacramento Zoological Society 2013 Annual Report

Thank you for your loyalty and

continued support of our Sacramento

Zoo. I promise that we, the Trustees,

will continue to do our best to carry

on the trust you have given us.

“Thank you for your loyalty and continued support of our Sacramento Zoo. I promise that we, the Trustees, will continue to do our best to carry on the trust you have given us.”

2013 BOARD OF TRuSTEES

director’s deskboard president

Although not obvious to the casual visitor at the Sacramento Zoo, we achieved a

significant milestone in 2013 with the continuation of our accreditation from the

Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

We are extremely proud that the Sacramento Zoo has been accredited since

1975! AZA accreditation ensures that the animals you visit receive excellent care

every day, and that the organization has met mandatory, rigorous, professional

standards for animal welfare and management, veterinary care, behavioral

enrichment, nutrition and staff training.

Rest assured, however, that it is not a rubber stamp process to continue to

meet and pass the meticulous standards of accreditation. The 2013 application

process was a year in preparation with 230 questions on 26 double-sided pages

and included 186 attached documents covering policies and procedures at the

Sacramento Zoo. Three visiting inspectors took three days to examine every

aspect of operations including animal care, visitor services, conservation efforts,

educational programming, finances and safety.

The AZA accreditation is an objective measure of our long term commitment to

the animals, visitors and staff. Everyone in the Sacramento region should share in

our pride at this achievement as it is a true measure of the value placed on our

living world by the community in supporting an accredited Zoo.

I continue to be amazed by the

number of people who come to

the Zoo for education, recreation

and events each year. In 2013,

we broke a 23-year record for

attendance with over 540,000

visitors coming to our 14-acre Zoo.

It is our hope that each one makes

a connection with the animals and

leaves knowing we are doing our

part to make sure the Sacramento

Zoo stays a viable community

asset for generations to come.

The Sacramento Zoo celebrated two outstanding achievements in 2013:• Record-breaking attendance of 540,514 visitors enjoying

family and friends at the Zoo;

• Accreditation was awarded to the Sacramento Zoo by the

Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). This prestigious

stamp of approval is granted to only 221 zoos and

aquariums nationwide who meet the rigorous standards

necessary to be accredited by the AZA, and is a testament

to the quality and excellence of our 14-acre Zoo.

Special events continued to highlight the Zoo’s many

opportunities for family fun, adding an additional 16,070

people to the overall visitor number. Warm summer evenings

hosted Twilight Thursdays’ live music and car shows in June

and July, and Ice Cream Safari offered a new time slot in

August. King of Feasts and Wild Affair rounded out parties

for adult fans. Other popular events included ZooZoom, Boo

at the Zoo and Dreamnight, demonstrating that there is truly

something for everyone at the Zoo!

New animal faces included 37 infants from numerous species

born at the Zoo, including a Wolf’s Guenon, Sumatran Tiger,

Mongoose Lemur, four Black and White Ruffed Lemurs, two

Red River Hogs, a Red Panda and seven Burrowing Owl

chicks. Staff happily greeted each new arrival and visitors were

overjoyed observing the youngsters with their proud parents.

Other new additions to the Zoo included a male Jaguar, two

King Vultures, a Sitatunga, a Bongo and juvenile Ostriches.

The Reptile House was full of life with a new Smooth-fronted

Caiman, Blood Python, Golden Mantellas, Madagascar Giant

Day Geckos and Oustalet’s Chameleon.

The Quarters for Conservation program continued to be a

popular way to encourage conservation awareness. Three

wishing wells at the Zoo’s entrance enabled visitors to vote

for one of three selected programs; a staggering 379,282

votes cast! A variety of programs supported by Zoo visitors,

volunteers and staff raised over $100,000 to aid worldwide

conservation efforts, with 30 projects in 18 countries receiving

financial and in-kind assistance.

The veterinary department, in collaboration with the Wildlife

Health Center at the uC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine,

continues to provide cutting edge healthcare to all animals at

the Sacramento Zoo. In 2013, 563 animals representing 161

species were examined, resulting in 3,584 individual medical

records. One special case involved Castro, the Zoo’s beloved

male Sumatran Tiger. Diagnosed with lymphoma early in 2013,

he continues to defy the odds. Despite oral chemotherapy and

surgery to insert a ureteral stent, he gained 40 pounds and is

doing well – a testament to the quality of care he is receiving.

The Zoo was named as a recipient in a community giving

campaign launched by the Sacramento Kings. The

“SacramenTENs Assist” campaign donated ten percent of

all season tickets sold during a ten-week period from August

through October with funds going to ten local charities.

Kudos to the Kings for their innovative fundraiser benefitting

nonprofits!

A special note of thanks to the Zoo’s dedicated group of 1,677

volunteers who donated their time and talent in 2013 to the

tune of 41,898 hours at a variety of duties. Whether working

with animal care staff, scooping ice cream at a fundraiser,

leading a group of school children on a Zoo tour or lending

their professional expertise to the organization by serving on

the Board of Trustees, we thank them for their enthusiasm and

passion for the animals and the Zoo.

The commitment to animals and

wildlife conservation could not

be greater or more important

to staff and volunteers. The

Zoo contributes significantly to

AZA’s conservation breeding and

management plans known as

Species Survival Programs (SSPs),

48 of which are managed by

Sacramento Zoo staff members.

A total of 578 individual animals

representing 137 species reside

at the Zoo. Of that number,

81 species are in danger of

going extinct (listed as either

Vulnerable, Endangered or

Critically Endangered). Eighty of

the species housed at the Zoo

are managed cooperatively as

part of our participation in AZA

programs.

The

Sacramento

Zoo supports

more than

two dozen

conservation

efforts in

the united

States and

18 countries

around the world with financial and in-kind

assistance from a variety of programs supported

by Zoo visitors, volunteers and staff.

The Quarters for Conservation program and

its success has been a huge help in reaching

$100,000 of giving during 2013. This program is

a great example of the Sacramento community

working hand in hand with the Zoo to make a

global impact.

The 2013 recipients that received funding from

the Quarters for Conservation program were the

local Riparian Brush Rabbit Recovery program,

the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary project and the

Masai Giraffe Conservation program. Each of

these species plays an important part in their

local ecosystem and is facing trouble in their

natural habitat. Three new projects will receive

support in 2014 with votes from Zoo visitors:

Tiger Conservation in Sumatra, the Pacific Fisher

Health Project, and the Galapagos Penguin Lava

Nest Project.

Look for the Quarters for Conservation wishing

wells when you enter the Zoo and cast your

vote for conservation. And don’t forget that

two percent of all Zoo membership fees go

directly to support conservation projects. Your

donations do make a difference!
