About this report

This report covers AECOM’s fiscal year ending September 30, 2013. It includes details of AECOM’s direct operations, those we acquired, and others still in the process of integration.

Safety, health and environment (SH&E) report managementThe report was developed by AECOM’s SH&E, legal and corporate communications teams. This is AECOM’s first company-wide report focusing on SH&E.

We’ve created this annual report to give our stakeholders a closer look at our safety, health and environment (SH&E) best practices, goals and performance, including areas where we acknowledge needed improvement. Throughout the report, you’ll find a mix of projects located around the world, which highlight some of our SH&E best practices in our operations.

Derived from AECOM’s Core Values, the ultimate goals of our new “Safety for Life” program are simple — to prevent work-related injuries or illnesses, damage to property and/or equipment from our activities, and adverse impacts to the environment from our ongoing projects or operations. And our recently updated guiding principles, our nine “Life-Preserving Principles,” will drive AECOM’s employees to proactively commit to achieving these goals.

Demonstrated Management Commitment — Our executive, senior and project managers will lead the SH&E improvement process and continuously demonstrate support and commitment.

Participation — Our employees will be encouraged and empowered to become actively engaged in our safety processes through their active participation in safety committees, training, audits, observations and inspections. Employees will be encouraged to participate in health initiatives and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Budgeting and Staffing for Safety — Our safety staff will be competent, fully trained and qualified to provide technical resources to our internal and external clients. A budget to support safety activities will be included within project proposals.

Pre-Planning — Our design, engineering, project and construction management teams will deploy effective risk-mitigation efforts to design, plan and build safety into every project. Pre-project and pre-task planning will be an effective tool in protecting our employees and the environment.

Contractor Management — Our project staff will work closely with our subconsultants, subcontractors, contractors and joint venture partners to provide a safe work environment for employees and members of the public. Our goal of SH&E performance excellence will be equally shared by all project participants.

Recognition and Rewards — Our employees will be recognized for their efforts in working safely and their support of our safety efforts.

Safety Orientation and Training — Our employees will be provided with effective safety training in order to identify and mitigate hazards in the workplace to prevent injuries to themselves and others who may be affected by their actions.

Incident Investigation — Our managers and safety professionals will investigate all recordable incidents and serious near misses to identify contributing factors and root causes in order to prevent a reoccurrence. Lessons learned shall be identified, communicated and implemented.

Fit for Duty — Our employees are responsible to report to work each day fit for duty and to not pose a health or safety hazard to themselves or others.

Foreword: Safeguarding our business

Following a year marked by extensive efforts to further enhance our robust safety program, it is my pleasure to share AECOM’s first company-wide safety report with you. At AECOM, safety is one of our most important Core Values. And as a global company with more than 45,000 employees, we understand that safety must remain an essential part of our DNA in order to achieve our purpose — to create, enhance and sustain the world’s built, natural and social environments.

From how we work inside the office to every decision that we make on a project site, the value of maintaining a healthy, vibrant workplace; protecting facilities, equipment and the environment; and, most importantly, ensuring the safety of our people; is emphasized every step of the way.

We will continue to focus on embedding safe business practices into AECOM’s culture. We will also continue to enhance our culture through a number of efforts, including: comprehensive online training and management system assessments; regular communications such as our safety bulletins, posters and videos; and company-wide recognition of programs such as the United Nations’ World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

At AECOM, the importance of safety isn’t confined to our offices and project sites. We also make it clear to our people that we genuinely care about their well-being, even after they leave the workplace, by encouraging safe behaviors at home, commuting to and from work — and 24 hours a day, every day.

To further our commitment to safety — in a visible way and through a global platform — AECOM participates in the world’s largest corporate social responsibility initiative, the United Nations Global Compact. As part of this effort, we remain dedicated to fairness, human health, environmental quality, ethics and the advancement of society — and its 10 principles remain etched into our strategy, culture and day-to-day operations.

Our efforts to optimize AECOM’s commitment to safety have helped earn a number of awards for our overall safety program, as well as individual projects. A few examples from fiscal year 2013 include:

– We were honored with two 2013 International Business Awards in the Health, Safety and Environment Program of the Year category in Asia, Australia and New Zealand as well as Canada, and the United States. These awards recognize AECOM’s successful accident and injury prevention policies, strong safety awareness programs, and strict adherence to environmental and occupational health and safety laws;

– DuPont named AECOM a finalist in the Safety Performance Improvement category for our work across the Middle East — particularly for safety initiatives established for the Etihad Towers project in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.; and

– Our San Francisco Public Utility Commission project in the United States received the industry award for Exceptional Performance in Safety from the American Public Works Association.

Views from our chief safety officer Safety for Life at AECOM

We are committed to keeping our employees safe and becoming the industry Safety, Health & Environment (SH&E) leader as we work toward a goal of having zero incidents in the workplace. This report is intended to give you a closer look into our deep SH&E culture and its successful application to our business practices.

To help meet our SH&E goals, we launched a new program titled “Safety for Life” at AECOM. More than just a motto, this comprehensive program includes processes and tools that employees can incorporate into their lives to ensure that they return home safely to their families each day.

In this report, you’ll read more about our processes, tools and best practices. For example, our Australia New Zealand operation has developed a process for desktop audits, which reviews the current execution of AECOM’s SH&E processes on projects. Immediate feedback is provided, and our people quickly close any identified gaps, which can also improve overall project performance.

As part of the Safety for Life program, we updated AECOM’s SH&E policies as well as our guiding principles. We firmly believe these “Life-Preserving Principles” will enhance AECOM’s ability to achieve its goal of zero employee injuries and no property damage, as well as foster an environmentally friendly and sustainable workplace.

As a global company operating in more than 140 countries, AECOM is constantly evolving to achieve excellence in everything we do. During 2013, we performed an in-depth review of the company’s safety processes and performance. This enabled us to identify opportunities for even further enhancements — ranging from gaining additional senior leadership support in business lines and geographies to implementing new processes. The fiscal year 2014 SH&E plan has 13 items, which include enhancing our:

– Risk analysis of potential hazards on projects we are bidding for during the business development phase;

– Internal communication on the importance of improving our safety culture, on executive and senior management support for SH&E, and on how employees can work to improve safety;

– Process of recognizing and rewarding employees for outstanding safety performance;

– System for creating lessons learned, so our organization prevents incidents from recurring; and

– Reporting near misses in order to identify root causes and reduce the risk of a serious incident occurring.

These items have been placed in a timeline and will be tracked monthly for progress. Many of these new processes were already in place as we kicked off the new fiscal year during October 2013.

Because of our increased focus, AECOM has shown a substantial reduction in its experience modification rate (EMR). This number is derived from a formula based upon the frequency and severity of injuries related to the amount of payroll, and is used in the U.S. as a prequalification tool. Moving from .66 in fiscal year 2012 down to .53 in fiscal year 2013, AECOM’s EMR is lower than many of our direct competitors’ and provides us with an advantage on bidding projects. And we are continuing to actively support our SH&E activities to continue this enhancement.

Our SH&E team is committed to advancing our best practices in safety processes and procedures. With a goal of having zero incidents in the workplace, we are dedicated to becoming the industry SH&E leader as we help our clients address their evolving, complex needs.

“Safety for Life” is a comprehensive internal program that drives AECOM toward proactively incorporating our safety standards and innovative techniques into everything we do — with an ultimate goal of achieving zero work-related injuries and/or illnesses; preventing damage to property and the environment; and maintaining an overall environmentally friendly and sustainable workplace.

Safety for Life MissionTo guide the architecture, construction and engineering industries as a safety thought leader by embedding a culture focused on health, safety, risk management and sustainability into all of our business activities.

Safety for Life VisionAt AECOM, we not only understand the immediate benefits of operating with safety as the cornerstone of our company culture, we also see the positive impact it has on our business development efforts. This is why maintaining a healthy, vibrant workplace is of primary importance to us as we uphold our commitment to acting as good corporate citizens by:

– Adopting measures that mitigate risk; preserve facilities, property, equipment and the natural environment; and protect the safety and health of our people — employees, clients and the end users of our projects.

– Practicing active safety leadership and training our professionals to design processes and projects in a manner that reduces strategic and localized risks and impacts.

– Continuously improving and updating systems and procedures to adhere to ever-changing occupational safety, health and environmental laws and licensing requirements across all levels of government — and, where no specific regulations exist, continuing to adhere to AECOM’s high standards, stakeholder expectations and the appropriate industry practices.

– Tracking our safety performance metrics and maintaining a high level of transparency with our employees, stakeholders and clients during this process.

As part of our dedication to safety, we understand that it is important to provide our stakeholders with interim targets to assure we maintain constant and steady improvement and focus throughout our regions. As a result, we actively measure and track our safety and health performance using two principal metrics:

Total Recordable Injury Rate (TRIR): The total number of work-related incidents that result in injury and/or ill health requiring medical attention beyond first-aid, restriction of work activities and/or absence from the workplace in order to recover. This number is then normalized to provide a rate of occurrence per 200,000 hours worked. Thereafter, the resultant rate is used to measure the frequency of all work-related injuries/illnesses. During fiscal year 2013, AECOM’s TRIR improved by 22 percent.

Lost Time Injury Rate (LTIR): The number of work-related incidents that result in injury and/or ill health and absence from work for one or more days. This number is then normalized to provide a rate of occurrence per 200,000 hours worked. The resultant rate is used to tabulate the relative severity of work-related injuries/illnesses. Since 2010, AECOM’s LTIR improvement increased by 44 percent.

To further promote safety in our work culture and improve safety performance, we also plan to implement LifeGuard, an online safety observation system that will record and measure site and office observations, both negative and positive.

Quick technical points:

- The application is built using HTML5. - To store the application, users simply bookmark the app on their device. - Once bookmarked, the app runs within the device’s web browser — no custom native application is required. - This can operate as a standalone application — no interaction with the server or post-backs need occur. - The application is cached but refreshes from the source when the mobile device has internet access ensuring that team members have access to the latest process. - The static nature of the application, the fact that there is no third-party store deployment and no dynamic content means security is not an issue.

Safety for Life initiativesThe Safety for Life program includes processes and tools such as online training and management system assessments, regular communications, access to enterprise-wide safe-work-method statements, and an incentive reward card that recognizes and rewards proactive safety behavior. Some examples include:

– As a sustainable replacement for printed material, the Safety for Life: Incident Reporting Tool is a secure Web application that provides instant cross-platform access to the most current data procedures to follow during an incident.

– In the wake of sociopolitical unrest that has gripped many nations, AECOM has designed comprehensive travel management safety and security systems that provide our employees with a safe zone, if needed, when they are travelling or working abroad.

– Hosted by the United Nations’ International Labor Organization, AECOM celebrates World Day for Safety and Health at Work by hosting “Safety Week” across the organization. In 2013, the theme “Prevention of Occupational Diseases” encouraged employees to reflect upon and learn about the importance of safety, health and environment strategies through a variety of activities aimed at making safety part of everyday life.

– As part of Safety Week, employees created more than 30 one-minute videos for a competition to win fun prizes and promote a culture of safety.

“ The prompt reporting of hazards, near misses and incidents is critical to providing a safe workplace for our employees and ensuring proper and timely treatment for injuries. The incident reporting app is an excellent example of AECOM’s dedication to sustainability and the Core Value of Safety.”

Safety for Life around the globeThe projects featured in this report reflect our commitment to ensure that employees go home in the same condition in which they came to work. Embedded in our DNA, a safety culture is inherent in every project. And our clients and partners have noticed. With accolades ranging from BP to the U.S. National Safety Council, our 45,000 professionals around the globe understand the importance and value of safety.

With an advanced safety culture, many of these projects utilize innovative safety strategies and techniques on some of the world’s most challenging projects — from the New Port Project in Qatar, to the Central-Wan Chai Bypass Project in Hong Kong, to the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.

AECOM incorporates safety into all of its projects, located in more than 140 countries around the world. These orange dots represent the projects featured in this report.

Setting the trend in safety: Caterpillar Safety Award In March 2013, AECOM was recognized for its safety practices by Caterpillar — marking the first time the manufacturer formally recognized a consultant with a Safety Award for facility development projects in China.

The award commends AECOM for achieving zero incidents in one million hours worked during 2011 and 2012, while acting as construction manager for four Caterpillar projects in China. AECOM partnered closely with Caterpillar to ensure that safety was a priority at every stage of each project — especially in the contractor evaluation and working plan.

AECOM’s entire team demonstrated a strong commitment to safety while emphasizing that keeping the workplace safe is part of every employee’s job. Strict safety training programs included site safety orientations, high-risk work safety trainings and certification, and toolbox talks. Employee health was also of paramount importance during the project — with a focus on heat stress prevention, installation of site rest sheds, as well as housekeeping and hygiene at the sites’ temporary dormitories. In addition to equipping all workers with personal protective equipment, employees with outstanding safety performance were recognized at monthly Safety Day events — further driving the safety culture down to the working level.

“Implementation of a successful site safety regime is a key driver for the overall success of any project,” said AECOM’s Andrew Wilson, executive director, project and construction management, China.

AECOM employees in China were recognized by Caterpillar for achieving zero incidents in one million hours worked during 2011 and 2012.

BP recognizes AECOM for safety in remediation

AECOM has received six consecutive Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Performance Awards from BP Remediation Management for outstanding performance. One of AECOM’s largest global clients, BP presents this prestigious award to contractors that annually achieve 10,000 hours worked without a recordable injury.

The award represents 1.2 million hours worked by 700 AECOM employees across hundreds of projects under challenging work and natural environmental conditions. Working across three continents, AECOM’s award-winning environmental group assisted BP with projects in Australia, Italy, New Zealand, Turkey and the United States — involving retail site closures, refinery product-recovery systems and off-shore spill response.

The achievement was made possible by a number of safety innovations developed by the team. These included a new way to control or reduce vapor emissions from product-recovery wells to meet regulatory requirements; participation in behavior-based safety for observations, near misses and management site visits; and a customized HSSE management system that integrates AECOM’s requirements, policies and procedures across multiple BP divisions into one unified system.

“This great safety achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment by our account team around the world — from field employees and project managers to senior management safety sponsors,” said AECOM’s Galen Cooter, BP global HSSE manager. “We exceeded BP’s requirements with safety mindfulness, planning, hazard and risk identification, assessment, as well as sharing HSSE best practices across multiple locations and site conditions.”

Office renovations: The intersection between safety and sustainability

Working toward AECOM’s overarching goal of reducing the environmental impact of our operations, the company’s Safety, Health & Environment (SH&E) team has played a major role in implementing SH&E procedures during office renovations in Asia. The team’s work across offices in Greater China — including Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Taipei — has resulted in zero incidents reported since renovations were completed in 2012 and 2013.

Specifically in AECOM’s Shanghai office, the SH&E team acted as project coordinator for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) application processes, including evaluating requirements; coordinating with sustainability consultants; managing documentation; and implementing environmental, energy-saving and waste management programs during office renovations. The office was recognized with the gold certificate for LEED.

Promoting health, safety and social responsibility across the Middle East

Every year, AECOM’s Middle East Safety, Health & Environment (SH&E) team runs a month-long campaign to raise awareness about major health concerns and key safety issues. Kicked off with a quiz testing employees’ health and safety knowledge, the team’s latest initiative highlighted the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle — specifically focusing on maintaining a healthy heart and minimizing the risk of cancer.

The SH&E team organized lunchtime “Brown Bag” sessions centered on safety while working at height, and held presentations where specialized doctors provided basic health checks and taught employees about the symptoms and preventative measures associated with cancer and heart conditions. Training materials were also dispersed to offices across the region, including posters and health and nutrition guides.

The initiative integrated AECOM’s view that promoting health and safety is critical even beyond the workplace. In addition to holding a competition for employees’ children to produce artwork illustrating sports and fitness, healthy eating, and working at height, the campaign included a charity casual dress day to raise money to furnish and equip a playroom at a children’s hospital in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.

“At AECOM, we understand that safety isn’t limited to the workplace,” said AECOM’s Steve Wood, director, SH&E. “It was inspiring to take our efforts a step further by working with children through the art competition and the fundraiser.”

The money raised allowed AECOM to provide the pediatric oncology ward at Tawam Hospital with decorations for the treatment rooms, as well as tables, chairs, laptops, toys and puzzles for the waiting area . The SH&E team also organized a party in the ward, featuring a clown, a balloon bender and face painting. Forty children and their families attended and received gifts such as MP3 players and toys.

Already hailed as one of the world’s largest “greenfield” port-development projects, Qatar’s New Port Project (NPP) will span a 26.5-square-kilometer (10.2-square-mile) area — including the new port, a modern Naval Base for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces, and a new canal for the planned Qatar Economic Zone 3. With an annual general cargo-handling capacity of six million 20-foot equivalent units (1,766,000 tons), the US$7.4-billion project will serve as a major gateway to Qatar and an important catalyst for the country’s export industry.

Since 2008, AECOM has served as program manager — combining its industry-leading, global transportation and program management practices with local design experts to provide risk management, procurement, construction supervision, cost management, program safety, and quality assurance/quality control for the project, while regularly reporting project progress to senior government leaders, ministries and stakeholders.

Responsible for overseeing more than 3,500 workers involved in the construction phase, AECOM’s core safety, health and environment philosophy — that proper identification, elimination and minimization of risks can prevent all injuries — has been critical to NPP’s continued progress.

The project’s considerable technical complexity, coupled with Qatar’s unrelenting heat, continue to present significant health and safety challenges. Yet, AECOM remains dedicated to implementing a strong safety culture on site, achieving 10 million hours worked without a lost-time incident and being honored with AECOM’s Impactus Award for Safety Excellence.

The existing port, located in the heart of the city, is currently a major bottleneck to the development of Qatar. The new port aims to better position the country to benefit from the expected regional growth in container and vehicle carrier traffic as well as general cargo traffic.

Tim Verdon, AECOM’s NPP program manager, said the project will encourage Qatar’s development by creating an economic hub vibrant with international trade. “The new port will quadruple importation volumes — allowing Qatar to meet its obligations to deliver the stadiums, hotels and infrastructure required for the World Cup in 2022.”

Upon completion of the first stage of the project in 2016, the project will be a vital component of Qatar’s budding economic infrastructure.

Safety from the start at Central-Wan Chai Bypass project, Hong Kong

As an exemplary safety performing project site, the US$3.6-billion Central-Wan Chai Bypass (CWB) project is one of the largest-scale projects supervised by AECOM in Hong Kong.

Intended to alleviate existing traffic congestion and accommodate anticipated traffic growth upon its commissioning, the 4.5-kilometer-long (2.8-mile-long), dual-three-lane trunk road will include a 3.7-kilometer-long (2.3-mile-long) tunnel running along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island to link Central and North Point.

Given the project’s enormous scale and complexity, AECOM’s Safety, Health & Environment (SH&E) team has played a key role ensuring the safety of construction workers, site staff and the general public. The team aims to foster a positive safety culture by enhancing site safety and health awareness and encouraging the adoption of safe work practices.

AECOM and the client signed a joint safety charter with the contractors — dedicating themselves to improving the safety level of the site environment by investing more resources into the welfare and training of workers, as well as by implementing various safety guidelines set out by the Hong Kong Construction Industry Council. A mentor system and safety performance management tools were also put in place to teach safety and hazard identification skills.

“Working safely in construction is one of the core competencies of a professional engineer in Hong Kong,” said Eric Wong, senior resident engineer for SH&E on the project. “As engineering consultants and construction supervisors, AECOM’s people understand that work safety is everyone’s responsibility, and work closely with the contractors to achieve the ultimate goal of zero accidents at construction sites.”

As a testament to the success of AECOM’s safety initiatives, the CWB has received numerous awards from Hong Kong

government agencies, industry organizations and clients, including the following:

Rebuilding Queensland’s flood-damaged road network

Safety is job number one with U.S. Navy

AECOM has achieved more than 147,000 hours of environmental engineering, technical consulting and program management services with zero safety incidents — while working at 58 facilities for the U.S. Navy and Marines across 26 states, as well as the Guam and Puerto Rico territories.

Since the beginning of a new contract in September 2011, more than 250 AECOM employees have worked safely to support the U.S. Navy’s Environmental Restoration and Munitions Response Programs. The team provides environmental-remedial investigation and planning services for cleanups at sites, harbors and ranges under its five-year, US$200-million Comprehensive, Long-Term Environmental Action Navy (CLEAN) contract.

According to Ken Vinson, senior vice president and Navy CLEAN program manager: “Many of the foundations of AECOM’s current safety program were laid over a number of years in collaboration with the U.S. Navy’s safety program. Historically, AECOM demonstrated a stellar safety performance record under the earlier U.S. Navy Pacific CLEAN contracts, where over an eight-year period our program staff worked 1 million hours without an Occupational Safety and Health Administration recordable injury. We are committed to continuing excellent safety performance.”

During the past four years, Queensland, Australia’s road network and transport infrastructure was damaged more than any other state government asset due to cyclones and significant flooding. In 2011, AECOM was selected by Transport Main Roads Queensland to manage the Transport Network Reconstruction Program (TNRP) for the Brisbane Metropolitan and Darling Downs regions.

Due to information technology availability restraints, Program Safety Manager Brogue Rinebarger, who works with AECOM’s water and infrastructure services group, created and implemented an innovative “safety roadmap” procedure. This provides all field employees with a “one-stop shop” for safety policies, procedures and information — including project-specific safety procedures focusing on fatigue management, working alone or in a remote location, as well as vehicle and driver safety.

“As a contract administrator on a multitude of projects on the TNRP, I was impressed to see genuine safety leadership supporting a meaningful safety culture,” said AECOM’s Adrian Derbyshire, program manager, water and infrastructure services. “This culture successfully influenced behaviors at all levels — from management to field personnel — and promoted a far-reaching dedication to safety, resulting in all employees getting home safely to their loved ones.”

Several of the training packages AECOM has provided to its client and contractors are now utilized across the state — with one currently being considered for a government safety award nomination.

“As a safety advisor on the TNRP, I have faith that my AECOM colleagues will continue to remain true to our Safety For Life values,” said AECOM’s Mark Randell, field safety officer, water and infrastructure services. “I am proud of the support they have shown me and look forward to further success on the project as our employees continue to put safety at the forefront of all of their work.”

In addition to safety achievements, AECOM’s team has successfully accomplished the following:

– Finalized 152 of 203 flood reconstruction projects; – Reconstructed more than 350 kilometers (218 miles) of roads with 400 kilometers (249 miles) still to be completed; and

– Delivered AU$640 million (US$599 million) worth of overall work from a total budget of AU$1.1 billion (US$1.03 billion).

The project is set for completion in 2014.

Marking milestones in South Shamkha

Creating a world-class safety system

AECOM’s team working on the South Shamkha infrastructure project near Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, recently reached a safety milestone of five-million work hours without a lost-time incident.

The Abu Dhabi Municipality presented a certificate of achievement on behalf of the team to AECOM’s John Kiernan, construction manager, and Ajith Kumar, engineer, safety, health and environment, during a ceremony hosted on the site.

AECOM has been providing construction supervision for the South Shamkha site since August 2011. The area is previously undeveloped land allocated for the construction of 12,500 villas, a central business district and community facilities. The work has also included building roads, street lighting, irrigation and sewer systems, as well as firefighting and telecommunication networks.

“This is a fine example of living our Core Value of Safety for our own employees as well as those that we can influence in our industry and communities,” said AECOM’s David Barwell, chief executive, Middle East. “Congratulations to the team on their achievement. Well done to everyone involved.”

AECOM is assisting a major U.S. state agency to develop a World-Class Safety System (WCSS). This ongoing multi-year project involves a comprehensive assessment across 20 agency divisions and offices to evaluate the current state of health and safety.

The assessments reviewed industrial hazards, injury and illness prevention programs, emergency and fire prevention, and safety communications. AECOM’s team also conducted a comprehensive review of leading global safety management systems to determine best practices and identified 12 attributes for the system. Working closely with agency leads, the team conducted a gap analysis and developed a three-year road-map and prioritized implementation plan to reduce safety risks, ensure compliance with applicable safety requirements and build the overall WCSS.

Currently, AECOM assists with implementation — creating the required written safety programs and plans, policies and procedures, communications and training. Training programs include injury illness and prevention, emergency actions, fire prevention, ergonomics, defensive driver safety, cardiopulmonary resuscitation/automated external defibrillator, hazard communication, chemical hygiene/lab safety, confined space operation, personal protective equipment, hazardous waste operations and emergency response waste site work, fall protection, hazardous waste handling/generation, and U.S. Department of Transportation hazmat transport.

Safety Stars at AECOM recognized for outstanding safe behavior

AECOM’s employees around the world build a “Safety for Life” culture.

The Safety Star Recognition Program is awarded to employees, teams or groups that demonstrate attitudes and behaviors that support outstanding safety, health and environmental performance. The objective of the Safety Star Recognition is to publicly recognize and thank those who shine in their commitment to our Core Value of Safety. AECOM’s Safety Star recognition program has recognized more than 260 Safety Stars through the first three quarters of fiscal year 2013. Our Safety Star Recognition is a very important component of our efforts to strengthen our safety culture and encourage positive safety attitudes and behaviors. It all starts with individuals and teams giving their best efforts to support the SH&E programs that have been put in place to create a safe working environment.

AECOM’s South Africa team wins DEKRA award

DEKRA, a leading services organization committed to long-term safety, quality and environmental protection, recently presented AECOM’s team in South Africa with an international award for outstanding achievement — recognizing the company’s implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of its safety, health, environmental and quality (SHE-Q) management systems, as well as excellence in compliance to standards in the consultants’ category.

DEKRA has been the South Africa team’s certification body for the past 13 years. Following their annual audit in 2012, the auditors were impressed by AECOM’s policies and procedures and nominated the company for the award.

AECOM’s Joslyn Pillay, SHE-Q manager, was also awarded a certificate of recognition for her significant contribution to ensuring that the accreditations are effectively and efficiently maintained.

“One of our greatest obligations as a company is to create a safe work environment for all our employees,” said AECOM’s Indresen Pillay, chief executive, Africa. “As such, it is particularly rewarding to see AECOM being recognized for its excellence in SHE-Q. Safely capping contaminated sediment in Brazil

Near the Presidente Vargas steel plant in Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, effluent releases and oil spills contaminated river sediment in an outfall channel and the adjacent Paraíba do Sul River with pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyl, as well as metals. As the National Steel Company (CSN) works to control source contamination, AECOM was selected to create an easily removable interim solution that would isolate contaminated sediments and provide erosion control.

To meet the client’s needs, AECOM partnered with Allonda to design an innovative, temporary sediment cap — using modular-woven geotextile bags filled with clean, coarse sand, combined into pallets with an underlying layer of non-woven geotextile. Designing the first riverine capping project in Brazil required significant interaction with regulatory agencies as it presented a new type of remedial action that hadn’t previously been reviewed or permitted in the state. The project successfully met all permitting requirements; combatted project challenges such as high river flow velocities, fluctuating water levels and limited shoreline access; and saved both design and construction time.

The method allowed the team to determine the necessary safety measures to prevent and mitigate risks. Focusing on keeping employees safe, AECOM worked with contractors to develop specific health and safety plans and emergency plans, which were ultimately reviewed and approved by CSN. An expert safety technician was also involved in the project and held daily meetings with the contractors and clients to help address upcoming project issues.

With a total capping footprint of more than 1,000 square meters (10,764 square feet), project installation was completed within approximately two months using divers and a specially designed deployment barge. Following source-area control, the project’s modular construction features will be considered for partial preservation and/or adaptation as part of the long-term remedy.
