Yanco Public School Working Bee We had a very productive three hours at our working bee last weekend. Thank you to all families who were able to attend and assist in improving the appearance of our school grounds. The gardens at the entrance of the school were tidied, garden rubbish removed, the garden boat painted, bark chips placed in garden areas and books covered. The soccer posts will hopefully be installed in the next couple of weeks. A big thank you to Darrel Garth for moving scoops of bark chips and soil for us on Saturday morning. A second working bee for 2019 will be planned in Term Three. Sport Skills with Yanco Agricultural High School K-6 participated in sport skills activities with students from Yanco Ag on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. YPS students are enjoying the opportunity to commence their day with various games and ball skills activities. It has been great to see positive behaviour from our students during these activities. Our next session will take place in Week 7 on Wednesday, June 12th 2019.

I am thrilled to say, that all students receiving learning support are continuing to present with positive ‘can-do’ attitudes – a great way to approach any task! Several new activities (pictured below) have been introduced in recent weeks. The beauty of many of these activities is that students experience learning as a fun thing to do. If parents and carers would like a copy of any of these activities for children to play at home, please just ask. Remember….the more times we practice, the better we get.

Today in gymnastics we learnt how to do lots of different animal walks. We did partner sit ups and team work games. It was great getting taught by Miss Wright By Taylor Griffiths

Ice-cream, crystals, tornados and explosions! This fortnight in Science rotations, we have been conducting some simple yet exciting experiments that students can recreate at home on a budget!Who’s hungry?! Students started off by collecting a bag of ice and adding rock salt. This makes the ice even colder as ice water has a lower freezing point than regular water. Students then combined cream, vanilla and sugar in to a smaller bag which was then placed inside of the ice bag. Then the shaking begins! The more the students shook their bag of cream, the thicker their ice-cream became. We finished off by throwing it in the freezer for a few minutes to make sure it was perfectly chilled. Yum! Crystals came next but why make 1 kind when you can make 2! The first batch used boiling water and borax combined in a glass Voss bottle (so that we can see them growing) and a skewer so that the crystals will climb up towards the top. These simple crystals take a few days to form so we have left them in a safe place where they won’t be bumped. The other batch used Epsom salts and boiling water combined in a Voss bottle (again so that we can see it. Also…plastic containers melt from the hot water as we learned in the first week!). Once again we placed a skewer inside. However, these crystals require cold temperatures to grow so we placed them in the fridge overnight and waited for the magic to happen! Spinning tornados in a bottle is something we have all done as kids. All you need is a clear bottle and water that you shake around in a circle to get the water spinning. But did you know that adding some dishwashing detergent makes these super fun tornados even better! And finally, a simple yet exciting experiment…Mentos and Coke…with a twist! We all know Mentos and Coke causes an explosive reaction, but what about other fizzy drinks? Well this fortnight, we put it to the test! Turns out that Lemonade and Raspberry drinks work just as well, if not better. Simply take the lid off of a bottle of fizzy drink and throw in some Mentos. In a matter of seconds you will see the tower of fizzy goodness exploding out the top of the bottle. If you would like to try these experiments at home, head to the links below for the measurements and lists of ingredients. Have fun and stay safe! Remember, NEVER eat anything made in science unless you have checked with an adult first and ALWAYS wash your hands after an experiment.
