As tenacious as any Seahawk, Wagner College enjoys a bucolic perch atop Grymes Hill overlooking Manhattan and the other boroughs of New York City. Founded in 1883 as a Lutheran proseminary, Wagner has evolved to become an independent resi-dential liberal arts college enrolling a ca-pacity of over 2,000 students. The location of the College above the gateway to one of the world’s greatest financial and cultur-al capitals was the work of alumnus Frank Sutter who convinced the College’s Board of Trustees to relocate Wagner here from Rochester in 1918. In this, the Rev. Sutter and the trustees were extraordinarily pre-scient. Their wisdom provided Wagner with a distinct geographical advantage over all other all liberal arts colleges in the coun-try. Wagner is New York State’s southern-most college and its 105 park-like acres represent the highest elevation on the eastern seaboard from Maine to Key West Florida.

The College’s signature curriculum – the Wagner Plan for the Practical Liberal Arts – capitalizes on the best of a traditional, suburban, liberal arts college campus and the infinite array of educational opportunities afforded by New York City. Students intern in the world’s leading financial institutions. They observe and experience diversity from the sophisticated workings of the United Nations to melting pots of multicultural neighborhoods. They circulate in the city’s unparalleled creative environment of museums, media, and performing arts. This is their laboratory. They immerse themselves and are inspired by the city’s sheer energy.

The contrast between the frenetic life of the city and the almost pastoral setting of the campus is the perfect metaphor for the melding of experiential and theoretical education that is the hallmark of The Wagner Plan. In small learning communities, students and faculty explore the conceptual foundations of the arts, humanities, and sciences. The faculty challenges students to consider new ideas, to master

new skills and technologies, and to reflect and draw meaning from what they have experienced in and out of the classroom.

A lush canopy of mature maples and oaks shades Wagner’s 105-acre campus of manicured lawns and gardens; historic and modern buildings; and sweeping views of Manhattan, Brook-lyn, and New York Harbor. In early 2009, former U.S. President Bill Clinton recognized Wagner College and President Richard Guarasci, at the second annual Clinton Global Initiative University. Wagner was cited for the Port Rich-mond Partnership, an innovative program that will focus the school’s community resources in an effort to improve quality of life in a specific Staten Island neighborhood.

Movie companies have frequently used the campus as a classic college setting, most recently for a movie titled “School of Rock” starring Jack Black (Shallow Hal). The picturesque campus was also used in a fall 2001 televi-sion series, The Education of Max Bixford, starring Rich-ard Dreyfus and as the site of a prospective private mili-

tary school in the HBO series, The Sopranos.

Wagner’s unique location offers students a campus setting that feels hundreds of miles away from anywhere, while actually only a ferry ride away from the professional and cultural riches of the world’s most dynamic

city - New York City

Since the adoption of the Wagner Plan in 1997, enroll-ment has increased by nearly 40 percent and student quality as measured by high school average and SAT scores have improved as well. Once largely a commut-er campus, now 82 percent of all undergraduates live on campus in residence halls that offer “million dol-lar” views. Though continuing to serve students from metropolitan New York, the college draws most of its enrollment from beyond the immediate region.

By every measure – enrollment, endowment, and na-tional reputation – Wagner is ascending the ranks of America’s strongest small colleges that blend the lib-eral arts with a commitment to service and preparation for the professions.

Campus life includes the array of sports provid-ed by an NCAA Division I program which is housed in a 93,000-square-foot sports center featuring an exten-sive fitness center, an indoor NCAA swimming pool and a basketball arena. A football and track & field sta-dium showcases a variety of playing fields throughout the campus including baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer venues.

Wagner’s alumni include Broadway Tony award win-ners, movie stars, film producers, playwrights, and For-tune 500 CEO’s including the chairman of GE Invest-ments, the chairman of Dupont Europe, the chairman Emeritus of The Oppenheimer Management Company and the chairman of the New York Power Authority.

Visitors to and residents of New York City alike en-joy access to a rich and diverse array of museums, cul-tural organizations, arts performances, sports teams, societies and attractions. Some of the best and most famous attractions in the world call New York City home. We encourage you to find out more about them, so that you can plan a visit to what is one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world. To get to Man-hattan from Staten Island, you can take a ride on the world-famous Staten Island Ferry, a well-recognized icon of New York City transportation, and incidentally, a free ride into the heart of New York City.

In the his 32nd year as Director of Athletics and Head Football Coach at Wagner College, the relentlessly energetic and optimistic Walt Hameline continues to amass an astounding record of achievement and consistency.

On Nov. 6, 2010, Hameline became just the eighth active Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) coach to win 200 games with a 31-20 victory over Monmouth and ranks 66th (tied) on the all-time NCAA wins list (any level). In addition, he is one 36 coaches to win 200 games at one

school. He will enter the 2013 season with an overall record of 213-127-2 (.626) over his 32-year head coaching career at Wagner.

In 2012, hameline enjoyed a banner season, one that featured a 9-4 record, a nine-game winning streak, the school’s first Northeast Conference (NEC) Football Title, a 31-20 NCAA FCS Playoff win over No. 24 Colgate, followed by a gallant effort in a 29-19 defeat at No. 4 Eastern Washington. Following the season, Hameline was bestowed with three “Coach of the Year” honors. In November, he was named 2012 NEC Coach of the Year, and in january was named National Coach of the Year by the College Sporting News and the College Sports Journal. Hameline also had the distinction of being named one of 20 finalists for the prestigious Eddie Robinson National Coach of the year award. following the 2012 cam-paign, the longtime Colts Neck, NJ native had the honor of inducted into the New Jersey Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame.

While his coaching resume is immense, Hameline has been equally effective as an administrator. Under Hameline’s lead-ership, the Seahawk athletic department has undergone an ambitious expansion in both sport offerings and facility improvements. In the spring of 2002, Wagner introduced women’s water polo to its slate and the Seahawks now feature 20 sport offerings.

Known for his keen vision and boundless enthusiasm, Hameline was influential in establishing the Seahawk Golf Clas-sic, now in its 22nd year, and the Seahawk Club, a pair of intitiaves aimed at increasing funds for the scholarship endow-ment and complete financial support for the athletic department.

Most recently under Hameline’s direction, thanks to the generosity of one of his former offensive lineman Marc Lebo-vitz, Wagner College Stadium was the beneficiary of a striking new state-of-the-art scoreboard in 2010. Lebovitz, a member of the Seahawks’ 1987 Division III National Championship football team and a 1991 Wagner graduate, is now a highly-successful New Jersey businessman. The scoreboard represents a major facility upgrade for the Seahawk foot-ball program while other Wagner teams benefitting from the scoreboard include women’s soccer, men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse.

In 2006, the Wagner College Stadium field was resurfaced with a state-of-the-art Field Turf playing surface. This multi-purpose surface was is also used for football, women’s soccer and lacrosse. In 1997 Hameline governed the opening of Wagner’s football stadium and outdoor track & field facility and was instrumental in erecting the Spiro Sports Center in the spring of 1999 - a 93,000 square-foot building which houses a 2,100-seat, multi-purpose arena, a six-lane swimming pool, team locker rooms and all athletic department offices. In 1995, Hameline oversaw the opening of new athletic fields at the base of Grymes Hill to house additional teams. This multi-sport facility is presently home to the Seahawk softball team which, in 2007, underwent a vast reconstruction.

Hameline’s overall coaching ledger includes five ECAC Championships, three NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NCAA Division III National Championship — all told, 10 post-season appearances in 29 seasons. Hameline won his 175th career game - all at Wagner with a come-from-behind victory over St. Francis (PA) in the 2005 season finale. He became the winningest coach in Wagner College history in 1990. The highlight, of course, is the 19-3 win over heavily-favored Dayton in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the 1987 NCAA Division III National Championship. Against one of the toughest schedules in the nation, Hameline’s Seahawks rolled to a 13-1 record, winning more games than any college football team in America. The team earned the school’s second Lambert Trophy, symbolic of football superiority in the East among Division III schools, and ECAC Team of the Year recognition. Hameline was honored by many organizations including the Chevrolet National Coach of the Year.

The 60-year old administrator, has been a key developer of the Northeast Conference, serving on numerous committees and served as president of the league. Eight years ago, Hameline was honored for his playing, coaching and adminis-trative achievements when he was inducted into the Utica Sports Hall of Fame. In addition, Hameline was given the All-America Football Foundation Johnny Vaught Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.

An outstanding defensive back at Brockport State, Hameline received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical educa-tion in 1975, and went on to earn his Master’s Degree in education from the University of Albany in 1977.

Hameline resides in Colts Neck, NJ, with his wife, Debbie, and their daughters Kristen and Kelly.

ABOUT THE NEC...Northeast Conference History:

When the Northeast Conference (NEC) was fi rst established as the ECAC-Metro Conference back in 1981, the league’s founders had one goal in mind: to create a competitive NCAA Division I men’s basketball conference for unaffi liated schools on the Eastern seaboard. A single-sport entity at its inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations over the past three decades, having transformed itself into a burgeoning 12-member, 23-sport conference.

The NEC and its member institutions are committed to providing opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in the classroom. Likewise, the Conference continually strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for athletic success, academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement.

The remarkable success story of the conference began to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports. Three years later, a change of name was in order and the Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship continuing to grow over the next 25 years, the NEC now enjoys qualifi cation or play-in access to 14 different NCAA Championships (baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, fi eld hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball).

Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since its inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Robert Morris, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner remain part of the current 12-school alignment. They are joined by Monmouth (admitted in 1985), Mount St. Mary’s (1989), Central Connecticut State (1997), Quinnipiac (1998) and Sacred Heart (1999). NEC expansion continues with the addition of Bryant University in 2012 as the league’s 12th member, which will give the league a six-state geographic footprint with access to such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence.

NEC member institutions now compete in 23 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, fi eld hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

Northeast Conference Website/TelevisionMore widely-recognized than ever, the NEC continues to expand its new media initiatives to cater to a growing fan base.

The Conference has embraced social media with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages, all of which have attracted loyal followings. The NEC also provides its fans with NEC On The Run podcast segments, weekly NEC Notebook spots (that also air on Sports Radio 66 WFAN in New York City and ESPN Radio 1250 in Pittsburgh) and video blogs. To further enhance its multimedia efforts, the league launched satellite website, www.northeastconference.tv, last fall. The site serves as the league’s webcast hub and offers an event archive dating back two years. A women’s basketball regular season Game of the Week along with ten conference championships (men’s and women’s soccer, fi eld hockey, volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball and baseball) made up the 2009-10 webcast package. The Conference also plans a summer relaunch of its offi cial website, www.northeastconference.org.

To supplement one of the premier regional basketball television packages in the country, the conference also produces a football package and a preseason basketball show entitled NEC Countdown to Tipoff. Over the last fi ve years, the Conference has televised nearly 150 events, as the league’s coverage area expanded to over 50 million homes. Along with fl agship station MSG Network, other regional television partners include MSG Plus, FSN-Pittsburgh, MASN, NESN, Fox College Sports, Cox Cable and the Connecticut Sports Network. In 2010, ESPN broadcast the men’s basketball championship game for the 23rd straight year, while ESPNU carried the women’s championship game, marking the third year in a row the women’s contest reached a nationwide audience.

MATT POSKAYHead Coach

SECOND SEASON

Matt Poskay, an All-American midfi elder who played on two National Championship teams at the University of Virginia following a storied high school career, and the 2010 MVP of the Major Lacrosse League, enters his second season at the helm of the Wagner men’s lacrosse program.

The future appears to be a bright one for the Seahawks. In the fi rst season under Poskay, the former Virginia All-American, National Champion and current Major Lacrosse League All-Star, Wagner was much improved in the fundamentals of the game and played a much crisper, more competitive brand of lacrosse.

On January 27, 2012, the 29-year old Poskay had the distinction of being the youngest inductee ever into the New Jersey Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

The highwater mark of Poskay’s maiden season was a scinitllating come-from-behind 11-8 win over NEC foe Sacred Heart on April 14. Wagner punctuated a rousing comeback with a game-ending 5-0 run, highlighted by clutch goaltending from Nicholas Gibaldi, who would go on to earn NEC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his 20-save effort.

Individually, midfi elder Nick DePhillips, one of Poskay’s new recruits last year and a transfer from Ohio State, earned Second-Team All-NEC honors.

For the two seasons prior to coming on board at Wagner, Poskay served as an assistant coach at Drew University in his native New Jersey where he helped the Rangers to a pair of winning seasons.

Prior to his stint at Drew, Poskay served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, A.L. Johnson Regional High School in Clark, New Jersey.

It was during his record-setting playing career at Johnson where Poskay began garnering national attention. He has held the national high school record with 362 career goals for nearly a decade and also tallied 468 career points, tops in state history. On the gridiron, he was a First-Team All-State quarterback as a senior and Second-Team his junior year. He was also the starting point guard for three years on the basketball team.

“We are obviously thrilled to have Matt heading up our lacrosse program” said Hameline at the time of his appointment on June 9, 2011. “His experience at the high school, collegiate and professional levels speak for themselves. I am confi dent that Matt’s background and high energy will resonate in recruiting and help our student-athletes compete at a higher level. He’s been a winner his whole life and I believe that he possesses the ability to transmit that winning edge to our program.”

Poskay, who is the fourth-leading goal-scorer by a Virginia midfi elder, helped led the Cavaliers to national titles in 2003 and 2006. He was selected in the second round of the 2006 Major Lacrosse League Draft by the Boston Cannons following his fi ve-goal performance in the Cavaliers’ NCAA title game win over UMass.

In 2006, he led the Cannons in goals and was named the team’s Rookie of the Year. His 2007 season was even better as he was named a MLL All-Star and then preceded to win the MLL All-Star Game MVP. In 2008, he was again named to the MLL All-Star team while leading the Cannons with 34 goals. The pinnacle of his professional career came in 2010 when he was not only the MVP of the league but also the league’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Poskay graduated from the University of Virginia’s, McIntrie School of Commerce with honors in 2006. He was a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Associa-tion Scholar All-American as well as an ACC Honor Roll selection three times.

What They’re Saying About Matt Poskay

“Everyone here at Virginia is excited about this opportunity for Matt at Wagner. Matt has been successful with everything he has touched and he is one of the bright, young lights in the coaching profession. The people at Wagner are going to thoroughly enjoy getting to know Matt and this is an exciting moment for Wagner.” Lacrosse. Matt Poskay is going to be a terrifi c head coach.”Virginia Head Coach Dom Starsia

“Matt’s a great player and a quality individual. He’s had success at every level of lacrosse from youth up to professional. He’s a great teacher. He coached with us after he came back from Virginia, joining the staff at Johnson for a couple years. He’s just a great mind, a great motivator. This will be a great opportunity for him.’Former Arthur l. Johnson Regional High School Head Coach Tony Calandra

“He’s such an intelligent lacrosse mind and I’m sure that will transfer over to his being a head coach. He understands what we’re trying to do from an offensive standpoint. He reads defenses and puts himself in a position to always be a threat and that’s why he’s put up the numbers he’s had. I regard Matt as a coach on the fi eld for us. This is his second year as a captain for us as well. He not only leads but he leads by example more than anything.”Boston Cannons Head Coach Bill Daye

ANTHONY IANNELLO

Assistant Coach

SECOND SEASONFormer Bryant University standout Anthony Iannellowas named an assistant coach with the Wagner College men’s lacrosse program in June, 2011 and is entering his second season with the Seahawks.

The intense, high-energy Iannello heads the Seahawk defense.

“Coach Iannello has really anchored down the defense. All of the guys are geared into his system and what we’re try-ing to do.” said Poskay. “Anthony has that group working towards playing at a consistently high level on that end and our defense has made great strides under his leader-ship. When you see us on game day, Anthony brings a lot of enthusiasm and energy to our defense and really, to our whole team.”

While at Bryant, the Lake Ronkonkoma, NY native was selected as one of 10 fi nalists from among all Division I men’s lacrosse athletes for the prestigious Lowe’s Award, which is based on achievements in the classroom, commu-nity, character and competition.

Iannello, who starred at Sachem North High School on Long Island before matriculating at Bryant, scooped up 31 ground balls and came up with 13 caused turnovers from his long-stick midfi eld position during his senior season. For his career, he amassed 170 ground balls and 59 caused turnovers in 64 games played. He served as a team captain in both his junior and senior seasons.

While at Bryant, Iannello was involved in a host of organi-zations, including being a member of the Senior Advisory Council, a group that meets with the University President and administrators on current issues and proposals.

He was involved with the Tomorrow’s Fund where he col-lected funds from his teammates that were used to pur-chase and deliver gift s to children with cancer. Iannello also wrote sports articles for the campus newspaper The Archway and served as an intern in the Bryant Athletic Communications Department.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bryant in Com-munication while pursuing a minor in Business Adminis-tration.

Mark Stapor is entering his fi rst season as an assistant coach with the Seahawks. No stranger to the NEC, Stapor was a standout on att ack for Mount St. Mary’s from 2007 until 2011 before graduating with a degree in accounting.

At Wagner, Stapor’s main responsibilities lie on the off ensive end.

“Mark brings a new mind to the off ensive side which really helps me out and allows me the opportunity coach everybody a litt le bit,” said Poskay. “Mark’s lacrosse mind really is helping and, being a recent top player at Mount St. Mary’s, he knows what winning is all about and he obviously knows the ins and outs of each of the programs in the NEC. Having mark on staff is a real asset for Wagner Men’s Lacrosse.”

Prior to arriving on Grymes Hill, Stapor spent eight months in Manchester, England assisting in the development of lacrosse for Stockport Lacrosse Club and local schools in the Stockport area of Manchester, England.

He was also head coach of Stockport’s U-16 Boys, Assistant Coach of U-12 Boys, and Player/Coach First Team. He also helped advance the Youth Developmental Program in Stock-port by initiating school clubs and interscholastic competi-tions.

A native of Herndon, VA and a prep star at Bishop O’Connell High School, Stapor was a standout on att ack for Mount St. Mary’s, a career that was capped off by a 2011 NEC Champion-ship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

q&a with seahawk head coach matt poskayIn Matt Poskay’s initial season as Seahawk head coach, Wagner made major strides in virtually every measureable area statistically. While the Green & White notched just one win, a plethora of the contests were close, competitive aff airs. The win Wagner did manage was a memorable one as the Seahawks stormed from behind to register an 11-8 win over Sacred Heart.

The 2013 Seahawks are an extremely young team as 22 of the 31 players on the roster are either freshmen or sophomores. The class breakdown consists of: Six seniors, three juniors, 10 sophomores and 12 freshmen.

As Poskay and the Seahawks point towards the 2013 campaign, Wagner Athletics had a chance to sit down and conduct a question and answer session with the Wagner head man.

As you enter your second season as a Division I men’s lacrosse coach, how would you assess your team’s outlook now that you’ve had a chance to coach and get to know many of them?

“We’re excited as coaches and they’re excited as players. The guys are buying in, there’s no question about that. We’re in the process of changing a culture and changing the brand here. I think if we continue to grow on our recruiting base and can continue recruiting at the level that we’ve reached, we can only get bett er. We have to continue to push each other in practice, that’s where it all starts.”

What were your impressions of NEC lacrosse as you look back on last season?

“The NEC is a very competitive league, every team’s good. Towards the end of the year, when everyone’s in conference play and those conference games hold a litt le bigger weight on you, it’s very exciting. Obviously, this year with the NEC automatic bid at stake and a berth in the NCAA’s, that only adds to the drama and serves as an even bigger motivating tool for each team.”

The 2013 Seahawks are an extremely young team, how would you assess your team’s strengths and weaknesses heading into the 2013 season?

“I think the biggest thing with a young team like this is when the quote unquote “light bulb” comes on for the younger guys. Once that happens, we’re going to take a big leap forward. When they turn that corner a litt le bit, we’re going to be a much-improved team. And that’s dependent on when they get comfortable and when they feel they can make a move. We’re obviously hoping a lot of the younger guys do it sooner rather than later. I think that will go a long way in determining our success. The younger guys are following the older guys, our workhorses as we say. But when they really get on board with those guys and everyone trusts each other, I think that’s when we’ll become a particularly dangerous team.”

How about some thoughts on the 2013 Seahawk schedule.““We saw a lot of of these same teams last season and a we were in a lot of those games. We grew more comfortable as the season wore along and we got a litt le taste of what it feels like to win (11-8 comeback victory over Sacred Heart (4/14). Heading into this year, we only expect bigger and bett er things”.

“We had multiple games where we right there the whole game, where it could have gone either way,” Poskay added. We’d be in those games and the other team would invariably make a litt le run on us and we couldn’t match them. To show that we could do that and that we were right there, only helps what we are trying to do. We showed we can compete with good teams.”

Wagner will be led by four captains this season. The midfi eld tandem of Nick DePhillips and Colin O’Rourke might be the best midfi eld combo in the NEC. And your other two captains are junior goalie Nicholas Gibaldi, who is a savvy veteran, along with senior defender R.J. Derosa. Can you give us a thumbnail sketch of each of the four captains?

“Well, like you said, Nick DePhillips and Colin O’Rourke are as good as it gets. They work well together and we’re going to try to give them some more support this year. I think we have some depth on the att ack and in the midfi eld. Nick’s a First-Team All-NEC Inside Lacrosse selection and was Second-Team All-Conference last year. Those are obviously two of our guys we count on a litt le bit more than others. But, we’ve also added some depth to give them some help.”

“Taking a look at them individually, Nick is a tremendous leader for us. He made a very smooth transition in his fi rst year here (aft er transferring from Ohio St.), quickly developed into a team leader and has continued to lead us on and off the fi eld this year. He’s defi nitely taken the right steps and worked very hard in the off season and is really excited about his last go here.”

“Colin O’Rourke is a workhorse. He’s constantly gett ing bett er day by day as we expect every one to. He’s defi nitely a guy we count on a lot. Colin does so many things well and, along with Nick DePhillips, forms a terrifi c midfi eld combination for us.”

“R.J. Derosa has made great strides in all areas. I think he realized, along with a lot of our older guys, that this is his last go here. He became a senior leader and once he showed he had the ability to do that, guys started following him. He’s a great example for our younger defensemen.”

“Nick Gibaldi is now starting his third year and he’s only going to keep gett ing bett er. He’s becoming more of a vocal leader on the fi eld, the anchor down there at the defensive end, and that’s what we need. He’s helping the younger guys out, and coaching on the fi eld, and that’s all you can really ask of your goalie. Defensively, Nick holds down the fort.”
