    IMPROVING LIVES,

    ONESMILEAT A TIME

JULY - I you thought June was hot, wait till thefreworks hit on the 4th! Typically the hottest month, sweat running down your back, this kind o haze andscorching heat can be oppressing to man and beast.A great, rereshing beer is Westbrook BrewingCompanys White Thai witbier. The lemongrass andginger are a nice twist to this dry and crisp summer ale.

AUGUSTPrune - Cut off brown hydrangea blooms and shape if too leggy:up to 1/3 of the height can be removed. It is also a good time to

thin the plant and remove some of the older canes.

Maintenance - Cut back summer annuals that have become too leggyand fertilize well with a liquid fertilizer. Deadhead your perennials and rosesto prolong bloom time. Continue weeding and edging your beds and borders.

On this date the Graham AME church at the corner of Wappoo Road and

Highway 61 was legally recorded at the Charleston County courthouse in

Book K, page 148. Originally the church had been called Stockhill and

was located near Old own. Te transfer of two acres of land in 1867 from

Edward and Harriet H. Frost made the move to this location possible.

SEPTEMBER - so this is what fall feels like? Ok, a few cooler evenings andsome nice breezes are extremely welcome. Its time to ease into the malts thistime of year, and move away from the lighter, golden beers of summer. Thereis nothing more American and perfect for fall than an amber ale; nearly everybrewery has one. The classic Charleston malt-leaning, red-brown, easy-goingale is Amber from Palmetto Brewing Company.

    FLASHBACK1234

    November 1916

Rene Ravenel surveyed the Crafs ract or J. M. Harrison. Te property was

over 330 acres and included a 1845 building located along the marsh o the

Ashley River. Harrison converted this structure, called a Dance Hall by amily

members, into his home. Also noted on the map was an Old Fort at the

bend in the Public Road near the approach to the New Bridge. Harrison

armed this land or many years beore he sold parcels or the development o

the neighborhoods o Moreland, Westwood and Byrnes Downs.

NOVEMBER - leaves are fallin allaround. Fires begin burning in stoves and

in backyards. Pull out the sweaters andthe hearty soups. The smoky smell, thecold nights, the darker, shorter days begfor Porter. Give thanks to England for theiramazing dark beer. A tasty twist on thestyle is the American porter, and an evenfurther bend is the addition of spicy maltin Riverdog Brewing Companys ChocolateRye Porter.

DECEMBER - here we are at the end ofthe year. Welcome winter. So how abouta winter welcome? Gatherings, family, food, holidays. Its a time to look backfondly on where we have been and whatis yet to come. Many breweries make aspecial beer just for such occasions. And,although Westbrooks decedent MexicanCake is not a winter warmer in style, whatcould be more warming for winter than a10.5% ABV spiced Russian imperial stoutwith cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, cinnamonsticks and fresh habanero peppers? Thisis phenomenal beer, what a way to end awonderful year?

JANUARYPrune - Cut back your nandinas and your hollies. It will help them bush out and be more lush or nextyear. It will also help to increase your berry production or next winter. While pruning, dont orget your

hedges such as podocarpus, viburnum, and ligustrum. While topping them, also take the time to thin them sosunlight can penetrate down into the hedge, making it uller and denser.

Maintenance - I you have not already had your soil tested, do so now. Clean up garden debris and cut backany perennials that might have turned to mush. Inspect your garden tools and sharpen or replace them as

needed.sunfower seeds, suet eeders, and mixed seed eeders. Birdbaths should be kept ull and clean.Pest Management Note whether your garden has plenty o winter interest and is attractive or birds.Seedpods let on ornamental grasses can provide both interest and ood o r the birds. Consider adding a

eeder just or sunfower seeds, suet eeders, and mixed seed eeders. Birdbaths should be kept ull and clean.
