Genetic resources

• Economic value: making use of genetic diversity

• Practices that work or not work for making a profit from conservation

varieties, including new business models

• Possible links with consumer and quality aspects such as nutritional issues,

diversity of taste, beneficial health effects, etc

• Interlinking with genebanks and related research work





Soil organic matter content of soils and soil fertility

• Soil fertility and best practices for keeping up/enhancing organic matter

content of soils: crop and soil management in the long-term context of

the crop rotation, including farm, inter-farm and urban-rural strategies

and environmental effects

• Better use of cover cropping, genetic resources (e.g. crops with

beneficial effect on OM), soil micro-organisms for nutrient uptake

• By-products [waste] recycling and smarter use of residues on land (incl

composting, closing cycles, in the context of changing market

demands/biobased purposes etc)?

• Link with better implementation of the new cross compliance

requirement: "maintenance of soil organic matter level …"





IPM in grape and soft fruit [next focus group: vegetables & other minor uses] (focus on crops with highest residues, even if minor/specialised crops – check, eg strawberries)

• Good practices and how to implement them in different geographical contexts

• Impact of crop rotations and intercropping, early diagnosis of plant diseases and efficient selection of disease resistance , including spraying technologies, ICT, etc
