The New School of Music is a community music school located in Cambridge for students of all ages and levels. NSM offers programs in a non-competitive, student centered learning environment from professional musicians with a passion for teaching. NSM offers private and group lessons, master classes, vacation programs, seasonal family events, and a community concert series on the 2nd Sunday of the month.

The New School of Music, housed in an 1883 wooden school house, was founded in 1976 by composer, conductor, and musician Nicholas Van Slyck. True to his founding vision, NSM maintains its focus on fostering a love for and understanding of music throughout our community by making music accessible, enjoyable and a part of people’s daily lives.

NSM works on two 17 lesson terms — Fall (September-January) and Spring (January-June). By registering for lessons, both you and your teacher are committing to your weekly lesson time for the full term. Lessons can be pro-rated if you join after the first day of the term; summer term is more flexible, typically ranging from 4-11 lessons.

All lessons take place within the NSM building and require advanced registration and payment.

Musikgarten Classes

Family Music for Babies | newborn to 12 monthsIn this introductory class, we’ll sing, play, and use basic instruments to increase your baby’s curiosity about music, develop listening skills and a sense of beat, and help establish a foundation for singing and musical thought. Folk songs, finger plays, and listening exercises form the basis of this curriculum. Parent/caregiver attends class with child.

Family Music for Toddlers | ages 1-3Each week parent/caregiver and child will sing, chant, move, dance, listen, and play simple instruments together — all activities that strengthens the natural connection between music and movement. Weekly classes feature movement activities for coordination, body awareness and control, exploration of space, and instruments such as rhythm sticks, jingles, rattles, drums, and resonator bars.

Dalcroze-Eurhythmics Based Classes

Intro to Dalcroze-Eurhythmics | ages 3-4This exciting class will introduce the basics of music and movement that will aid your child in all aspects of musical study. Simple songs, movement activities, rhythm games will all be used, along with beginning Solfege patterns and basic instruments.

Listen and Move | ages 4-5Storytelling through movement, instrumentation, and vocalization form the basis for this Dalcroze-Eurhythmics inspired class. We’ll learn how music can be used to express emotions, character, and plot with listening activities and creative movement, all while developing independent thinking skills and ear training.

Sing & Move | ages 5-6A playful and stimulating environment designed to foster a love and understanding of music through song and movement. Using the Dalcroze-Eurhythmics method, children ages 5-6 will build a strong foundation in learning musical concepts, including melody, rhythm patterns, accurate pitch, reading music, tempo, and dynamics — a great introduction towards future instrumental and choir classes.

Move & Play + Group Piano class | ages 6-8This unique approach to piano lessons uses kinesthetics to allow kids to experience music with their whole bodies by applying the concepts of Dalcroze-Eurhythmics. This class is designed for children ages 6-8 as an introduction to learn the piano — a great foundation for private lessons.

Read and Move ages 6-8In this class, we will begin learning the basics of reading musical notation using movement, basic instruments, and rhythm games. With a heavier emphasis on reading, rhythm, and notation, Read and Move is perfect for the young musician hoping to gain more independence and confidence in playing and practicing. This class can be used simultaneously with private lessons to enhance music reading skills, but also appropriate for students not in private or other lessons.

Group Violin | ages 4-6Here is an opportunity to explore the world of violin in a welcoming and supportive group setting. Beginner students will learn the basics of technique, music reading, and simple tunes in this creative group class environment through musical games, movement, and ensemble playing.

Beginning Recorder | ages 5-9Recorder class is an exciting opportunity for young students to be introduced to playing a woodwind instrument. We will learn about reading music, playing music as a group, and have lots of fun doing it! We will end the term with a class performance. No previous experience with music or an instrument is required. Tuition includes the purchase of a recorder.

Beginning Piano | ages 6-8Our classes introduce a solid foundation of keyboard and music skills, including note-reading, ear-training, ensemble playing, improvisation, and composition. Children learn in a small group setting with a maximum of five students in the class. A piano or 61-note keyboard required for home practice.

Beginners Group Piano | adultsA perfect place to start your study. Less pressure for busy adults, fun, and support from the other class members. Subjects of classes will be note learning, how to practice in limited free time, beginning music theory (the language of music), some improvisation (playing without notes) with other class members..

Returning to the Piano – A Group Piano Class | adults with some previous studyPiano class for those with some previous study-no matter how long ago, it will come back! Class will focus on reading music, some group playing, and simple harmony.

Group Violin | adultsWhether you are a complete beginner or looking for a refresher course, our Group Violin class is for you. This class will cover fun music each week in an enjoyable, relaxed environment for adults while learning the proper posture, holding the violin and bow, and basic techniques. If you have had an interest but have not followed through on it yet, this is the class to try. Invite a friend and learn together!

Suzuki MethodSuzuki Private Lessons & Group Classes | all agesSuzuki’s approach to teaching music builds on the principles of language acquisition. Those principals include – early beginning, listening, love and encouragement, parental support, constant repetition, learning with other children, and learning to read. Because all children learn and master their own language, Suzuki believed all children could learn and master music in the same way.

Sing What You Love! Musical Theater Ensemble | ages 7-14Love musical theater? Love singing in a chorus? Let’s combine the two! Come have a blast singing your favorite musical theater songs in a new, exciting way. Everything from Annie, to Into the Woods, to Wicked is a possibility. Learn and improve upon basic vocal techniques, harmonizing, and acting/performance skills along the way! Class culminates in a final performance with a full band!

Sing What You Love! Popular Music EnsembleSection 1 for kids ages 9-14 | Section 2 for teens ages 14-18 | Section 3 for adultsCome be a part of this fun, collaborative musical community where you get to sing the songs you love and get exposed to other great music! Learn and improve upon basic vocal techniques, ear training, and harmonizing skills along the way! Class culminates in a final performance with a full band.

NSM Gospel/Soul Choir | adultsCome have a blast singing a mixture of Gospel and Soul music! Think Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary all the way to Sam Cooke. Improve basic vocal techniques and harmonizing skills along the way. Open to all — just come prepared to have fun, put yourself out there, and truly sing from your soul! Class culminates in a final performance with a full band!

The Living Instrument and How It Works Opportunities take place throughout the year for students to perform for and learn from guest artists on various instruments, voices, and additional topics of interest including, “The Living Instrument and How it Works” with vocalist Emily Romney. Summer Vocal Chamber Music Course for AdultsThis summer course offers adult singers an opportunity to expand their performing experience and repertoire with Vocal Chamber Music. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced music theory classes will be offered Saturday afternoons. Subjects include ear training, solfege, music analysis, four part writing, counterpoint, and composition techniques. A wide variety of musical genres will be explored. Prerequisite: one year of study on an instrument.

Training Choir | ages 5-7This ensemble will be an un-auditioned group consisting of children aged 5-7 years of age. Children will be introduced to the fundamentals of choral singing in using their voices to make music. They will focus on building the necessary skills of pitch-matching, listening, and rhythm.

Repertory Ambassadors | ages 8-13This ensemble is open by audition only and is intended as the next step in the process of vocal skill and musicianship. Emphasis will be on proper vocal technique, sight reading skills and musicianship. Singers will explore and perform secular, sacred, and popular music as well as music from different cultures and genres. This ensemble will exhibit the highest level of music making and choral singing.

Young Ambassadors | ages 14-18This ensemble is open by audition only. It is intended as the culmination of training and preparation from within the organization. This ensemble will exhibit the highest level of music making and choral singing.

Ambassadors | ages 18+If you are an experienced singer and want to be challenged, this group is for you! Led by international choral specialist, Murray Kidd, this class will focus on music of a very high standard and spanning many time periods and styles. Concerts will include the best music of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and the modern era.

Community Chamber Music for Strings, Woodwinds, and Piano | all agesPlaying with others is a great way to improve your technique while having fun! This class will place students of similar experience in small groups to explore the chamber music repertoire. Each ensemble will be formed based on experience and instrumentation, working in groups of two to four students in each ensemble, they will be coached by one of our fabulous NSM faculty members.

Meet, Play & Eat! A Monthly Chamber Group Meeting | adultsAll adult pianists, strings, and woodwind players are welcome to join us in a monthly gathering of chamber music playing. The afternoon will culminate with a group gathering that will include a light reception and an opportunity for participants to perform the pieces they have worked on.

Scottish Fiddle | all agesLearn great Scottish tunes and authentic Scottish articulation. Class is open to all ages; minimum of 2 years of violin study needed to join.

Cello Choir | ages 5-18Come revel in the gorgeous sound of an all-cello ensemble! Play familiar pieces from the Suzuki repertoire, as well as to learn new music and develop technique as a group then participate in end-of-term performance for family and friends. All levels of cellists are welcome, no placement audition needed.

Preparatory String Orchestra | ages 7-12This ensemble is the perfect opportunity for young string players to gain experience playing as orchestral musicians! Participants will develop reading skills, learn how to follow a conductor, and have fun playing in a large ensemble! There will be a performance at the end of the semester. Placement audition required to help with ensemble formation.

String Chamber Orchestra | ages 13-18This is a wonderful opportunity for experienced strings players, a chance to explore the chamber orchestra repertoire. We will focus on instrumental technique, reading skills, and ensemble experience. There will be a performance at the end of the semester. Placement audition required to help with ensemble formation.

Flute Choir | all agesFlute choir provides a wonderful chance for flutists of all ages to come together to explore the diverse repertoire for this ensemble and develop technique as a group. There will be at least one performance by the ensemble at the end of each term. All levels of flutists are welcome, but a basic knowledge of reading music is recommended.

Recorder Ensemble | adultsThis Recorder Ensemble class is for adults of all levels, including beginners. This ensemble is an easy way for adults to experience a life-long joy of music making. A great class to take with a friend and meet new ones!

Woodwind Chamber MusicSection 1 for Beginners ages 9-13 | Section 2 for Intermediate/Advanced Ensembles ages 13-18Playing in a small ensemble is a wonderful opportunity to develop technique on your instrument while exploring new repertoire and working with others. Each ensemble will be formed based on experience and instrumentation and will consist of no more than 4 students. Each ensemble will work toward at least one performance at the end of the term.
