From campaigns to social media,

SustainMobility uses various

avenues to reach out to our

members and the communities

we serve, encouraging individuals

to re-think the way they commute.

The Smart Commute Mississauga program, kicked off Bike

Month 2013 by partnering with The City of Mississauga,

Metrolinx and the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee to

bring together the 7th annual Bike to Work/School Day Event.

On May 27th, students and staff from ten secondary schools,

residents and civic leaders were invited to cycle to Mississauga

Celebration Square. Attendees enjoyed an electrifying BMX

stunt show put on by Craz-E-Crew, a free pancake breakfast,

and a chance to win a Daymak Paris Lithium E-bike and other

prizes. The 2013 event was our biggest event to date. More

than 600 cyclists participated in the event.

In addition to the public bike ride event, Smart Commute

Mississauga workplaces also hosted 13 Bike to Work Day

events during Bike Month 2013, encouraging employees

to use pedal power instead of horsepower. More than 275

employees participated in the events, proving that cycling

is an easy, efficient and healthy mode of transportation.

The support and participation of our sponsors: Hatch Ltd.,

Whole Foods Market - Square One, Daymak Inc, and Boss

Promotions helped make Bike to Work Day 2013 our most

successful event to date.

Clarkson Secondary School

Gordon Graydon Secondary School

Rick Hansen Secondary School

Thomas L. Kennedy Secondary School

Erindale Secondary School

Cawthra Park Secondary School

Glenforest Secondary School

John Fraser Secondary School

Steering Youth in the Right Direction

Regular physical activity reduces the risk of various chronic diseases while improving mental, emotional and physical health. Sadly, only 7% of Canadian youth

get the recommended daily minimum of 60-minutes of

moderate to vigorous physical activity, leaving the majority

of Canadian youth exposed to the damaging effects of a

sedentary lifestyle.

That’s why every year Smart Commute Mississauga

encourages students from local high schools to participate

in the Bike to School Day event . We hope that our high energy event will encourage students to embrace cycling as a viable and fun commute option, while strengthening physical activity patterns in youth to help them develop a disposition for lifelong physical activity.

Pollution Probe’s Clean Air Commute Week is an annual week-long campaign that encourages workplace commuters to choose

more sustainable modes of transportation rather than driving to work alone. In 2013, employees from Hatch Ltd., Holcim

(Canada) Inc., LoyaltyOne, MMM Group Limited, University of Toronto Mississauga, and Transat A.T. Inc participated in the event,

improving local air quality and reducing local traffic congestion.

There’s more than one way to beat traffic. During this week-long campaign solo drivers are encouraged to discover their

commuting options. The campaign coincides with International Car Free Day, encouraging commuters to leave their cars at

home and use sustainable transportation options like walking, cycling, carpooling and public transit. We had 35% of employees

at Smart Commute Mississauga workplaces make a change to their commute mode during Smart Commute Week. As well,

47% of employees at Smart Commute Pearson Airport Area workplaces made a change to their commute mode during Smart

Commute Week.

Smart Commute Mississauga and Smart Commute Pearson Airport Area’s annual WIN it ALL this FALL campaign aims to increase

awareness of the online ride-matching tool. This annual campaign encourages employees to share a ride to and from work,

and celebrate the savings associated with carpooling.

Smart Commute workplaces are recognized for their

achievements in helping us accomplish our goal of

reducing single occupancy vehicle travel through

sustainable transportation choices. We value their

dedication, determination and innovation, and celebrate

their success.

The Smart Commute Awards, hosted by Metrolinx, is an

annual event that highlights and celebrates employers

for outstanding commitment in supporting sustainable

transportation options amongst their employees. Since

2007, sustainable transportation leaders from across the

Greater Toronto Hamilton Area gather to celebrate and

recognize forward-thinking organizations for promoting

sustainable commuting at their workplaces during the Smart

Commute Awards. This year, Smart Commute Mississauga

stole the show with three of our exceptional workplaces

and one outstanding individual being recognized for their

achievements.

Not once, not twice, not even three times- Hatch Ltd. won

its 4th Smart Commute Employer of the Year Award. Hatch

Ltd. (Hatch) has shown immense dedication and leadership

in the Smart Commute program. Since joining the program

in 2007, Hatch has reduced single occupancy travel to the

workplace by 16 per cent. Hatch was honoured this year with

the Smart Commute Mississauga Employer of the Year Award

for its outstanding commitment, leadership and innovation

in implementing the Smart Commute Program. This isn’t

the first time Hatch was acknowledged for their sustainable

commuting initiatives. Hatch was honoured with the award

in 2007, 2009, and 2011, and was also recognized as Regional

Employer of the Year in 2009.

Hatch has taken the initiative to develop several independent

ideas to promote sustainable commuting such as a Carpool

Incentive that rewards carpoolers with $2.50 per passenger

per one-way trip; a Cycling Incentive that rewards employees

who cycle to work $2 per day and an installation of electric

car charging stations.

Smart Commute Mississauga Employer of the Year Award Goes To Hatch Ltd.

“Sustainable commuting is critical to the culture at Hatch, and Smart Commute has been a valuable tool

in helping us achieve this. Hatch has more employees than ever participating in sustainable commuting

initiatives and we are looking forward to achieving outstanding results in the future.”

− Andrew Tohn, Commuting Initiatives Team, Hatch Ltd.
