DIRECTOR'S MESSAGEGENERAL INFORMATION

It is the seventh year of UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey and we expect bigger and better things from the blue and white at the Campus Ice Centre!

As we move ahead, we look to continue to provide the best staff, coaches and students at our campus with the common focus of excellence for everyone. The vision includes our campus being Canada’s leader in athletics, recreation and wellness programs, combined with top flight athletic facilities; all of which will enrich the overall post secondary experience for our students.

Our intentions are to deliver a top rated, first class varsity hockey program which becomes an annual contender in the OUA and CIS. This will build a sense of pride and community on campus and will support the successful recruitment of students. The OUA is an exciting brand of hockey and we think once you have witnessed a game, you will keep coming back.

Head Coach and Canadian hockey legend Karen Nystrom and her coaching staff are back for another season, as they look to build off the momentum generated from last season after qualifying for the OUA playoffs. The Campus

Ice Centre, aptly nicknamed the Dog Pound, is the official home of the Ridgebacks and was packed with fans of all ages last year. The twin pad arena complex, located right on campus, has a seating capacity in the main rink for 550 with standing room for another 250 and makes for an exciting atmosphere at home games! There is also an amazing restaurant on the second level (Shagwells on the Ridge) that overlooks the ice. Each Ridgeback team also has their own specially designed change room, coaching space, laundry and equipment storage.

This season we look to continue building a winning tradition at UOIT with the high caliber of coaching staff assembled, along with a highly talented roster we have in place. We can’t do it however without great fans and supporters.

We hope you enjoy year seven of UOIT women’s hockey!

LET’S GO RIDGEBACKS!

Worthington continued to make her mark with the Ridgebacks women’s hockey program in 2012-13 scoring seven goals and nine assists in 26 games; one point behind the team’s leading scorer. She is second in all-time goals scored with 34 in her career and second in overall Ridgeback scoring with 70 points. Worthington was recognized last season with the James-Baun cup, which is presented to an athlete that shows commitment, dedication, perseverance, academic responsibility, leadership, athletic success, and is a great teammate in the pursuit of excellence.

Marchese had a very successful rookie season with the Ridgebacks, earning herself the freshman of the year award for 2012-13. After leading the Brampton Jr. team in +/- before joining the Ridgebacks, she had no problem continuing her success in the OUA. She plays a key role in shutting down team’s top lines as well as anchoring the blue line on the power play. Her defensive leadership will continue to be looked upon for the 2013-14 season.

Long continues to be one of the leaders in the women’s hockey dressing room since coach Nystrom named her an assistant captain. Prior to joining UOIT, Long became a member of the Whitby Junior Wolves in the PWHL where her team had the best record in Wolves history with 19-13-1-1 numbers in 2009-10. Now a solid member and leader in the Ridgebacks line-up, Long is an active member of both the power play and penalty kill. In the 2012-13 season, Long received recognition as she received the defensive player of the year award; she also finished second overall in points for defensemen.

Dillon joins the Ridgebacks as a graduate student in the Teacher’s College Education Program at UOIT. She is coming off a four year stint with the Western Mustangs where she finished her undergraduate degree and was a pivotal member of the women’s hockey program. A forward known for her speed, Dillon was an assistant captain with the Mustangs and played in all 26 games of her final season in 2011-12. She was the leading goal scorer with 17 goals and finished second in overall points with 25 on the year. Dillon is also a former Whitby Junior player in the PWHL; she joins former junior teammates Jill Morillo and Sarah Worthington for the 2013-14 Ridgebacks season. Coach Nystrom looks forward to using Dillon’s experience in the OUA in key game situations.

Spencer proved to be a valuable asset to the Ridgebacks in her sophomore campaign as a great puck mover out of the defensive zone. She joined UOIT after a successful junior career with the Whitby Wolves. In 2010-11, Whitby won the gold medal at the Stoney Creek University showcase. The team finished fifth in the PWHL (a program high) and had a bronze-medal performance at the OWHA intermediate AA championship at York University. Spencer is a solid penalty killer for the Ridgebacks and a reliable stay at home defensemen.

Battie joined the Ridgebacks from the Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA), in Penticton, British Columbia. In her 2012-13 debut in the OUA, she led the Ridgebacks in freshmen points with six goals and four assists. She is known for her ability to find open ice on the power play as well as her speed in the offensive zone. Working hard both on the ice and in the classroom, her positive attitude and commitment to the team are leadership qualities that Nystrom looks forward to working with in the future.

LoPresti joined the Ridgebacks after a two-year junior career with the Stoney Creek Sabres of the PWHL. Before joining the Ridgebacks, Lopresti led her junior team in overtime and power play goals in 2011-12. As a rookie with the Ridgebacks, she clocked a lot of power-play and penalty kill time and will continue to be relied upon in these specialty team situations. Lopresti is well known as a speedy forward with a quick shot, as well as a physical presence racking up 24 penalty minutes on the season.

Morillo is one of the most decorated athletes in UOIT history. She is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 50 goals and 39 assists in 106 games. In 2011-12, the Ridgebacks captain became the first UOIT student-athlete to win a CIS major award, as she was named the recipient of the Marion Hilliard Award. She was also named an OUA all-star and CIS all-Canadian. Morillo has also won several other awards including UOIT overall athlete of the year, overall freshman of the year, team MVP, top offensive player, CIS Academic all-Canadian and OUA all-Rookie.

Forchielli joined the Ridgebacks after a successful run with the Stoney Creek Junior Sabres. In eight playoff games, Forchielli scored a team-high four goals and four assists. She recorded 60 points in 88 games in two seasons in the PWHL. As a Ridgeback in the 2012-13 season, Forchielli immediately made an impact finishing second in freshmen scoring. Her ability to walk off the wall and her quick shot allotted her six goals and two assists on the season. She will be looked upon this season for creating opportunities on the power-play.

Moynes joined the Ridgebacks from the Belleville Bearcats where she had a successful run as a stay at home defenseman. Moynes brings a good size and physical play to her game on the blueline. Moynes is also the only Ridgeback to play both defense and forward as Nystrom is looking to use her speed and hard work up front for the 2013-14 year. Moynes is known for her positive attitude as well as her work ethic.

Cavell joins the Ridgebacks line-up after a successful minor hockey career with the Edmonton Thunder. The Edmonton native was the captain of the Thunder and led the league in assists. The Thunder qualified for the Esso Cup (Female National Championship) three years in a row where Cavell won silver and two bronze medals with her squad. She was featured as one of the top 10 players to watch by Hockey Canada. The power forward scored five out of the ten game winning goals in the Thunder’s playoff run this past season. Cavell was named player of the game in the Esso Cup in both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. She brings size and speed to the Ridgebacks lineup this season, and will be looked upon for her powerful shot in key power point situations.

Budden hails from Richmond, BC, where she played with the Vancouver Fusion of the Female Midget AAA league. With the Fusion, the 5’4 defender was a two-time league all-star and team captain. In 2010-11, she played in the U18 BC Cup and was a provincial camp invitee. In her 2012-13 freshman season with the Ridgebacks, she was active in one of the top defensive pairings, working alongside veteran Melissa Berney. Her tough physical play as a stay-at-home defenseman was well known as she led the team with 30 penalty minutes.

In the 2012-13 season, Gibson was the recipient of the women’s hockey leadership award as well as the Gary Polonsky leadership award. Gibson also had a standout year in 2010-11 as she was named the team’s MVP. In the 2011-12 season she was the recipient of the James-Baun cup. From day one of her freshman campaign, Gibson had the dedication and positive attitude that the coaching staff is looking for in a player.

Sisson came to UOIT from the Durham West Lightning Midget “AA” program where she had 10 goals and 15 assists. Sisson brings size and strength to the team as well as expertise on the penalty kill. She continues to be looked at as a role player and be called upon in key situations. Sisson is known for her commitment to teamwork and team goals. She came to UOIT because of the recognizable Kinesiology program and the small campus atmosphere.

Morgan has established herself as one of the Ridgebacks top penalty killers in three seasons with the team. She joined the Ridgebacks after a successful junior career with the Durham West Junior Lightning and Whitby Wolves before that. KAREN NYSTROM HEAD COACH

In 2009-10, Karen Nystrom became the second head coach of the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey program after founding head coach Gary Pitcher stepped down following the conclusion of the 2008-09 OUA regular season. He passed the torch to his assistant coach and national team hero.

Nystrom has quite an impressive hockey resume as a member of the Canadian National team for almost a decade. In her career with Team Canada, she won three World Championship titles (1992, 1994 & 1997), a 3 Nations Cup title (1996) and a Pacific Rim championship (1995). She also won an Olympic silver medal at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.

Not only has Nystrom excelled on the ice, but in coaching as well. She served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Jr. Aeros and for a U-18 team Ontario which won a gold medal. For UOIT’s first two seasons, she gained valuable experience behind the bench with the Ridgebacks as an assistant coach.

Nystrom will bring the same intensity to the Ridgeback team as she did on the ice throughout her playing career, with a focus on conditioning, team speed and aggressiveness. She is striving to build the program into one of the top teams in the country.

Perram carries an experience of over 20 years of coaching, which includes 17 years with female hockey programs. He was honoured to hold the prestigious position of Coach of Switzerland’s women’s national team for a total of three years. After returning to Canada, Perram accepted a coaching position with the Senior AAA TELUS Lightning team of the National Women’s Hockey League, and remained their head coach for six years. Most recently, he was a coach mentor for the Etobicoke Dolphins Hockey Association and coupled that experience with coaching their Intermediate AA (Junior) program.

MacIsaac is from Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He played all of his minor hockey and junior hockey on the east coast until moving to Ontario to begin his high school teaching career. He represented the St. Francis Xavier University women’s hockey program as an Ontario Scout for four years, scouting the Provincial Women’s Hockey League and midget girls hockey. He spent three years as a coach with the Mississauga Jr. Chiefs of the PWHL prior to joining UOIT. MacIsaac has also coached high school girl’s hockey for five years; winning two OFSAA championships.

Prior to joining the Ridgebacks staff, she coached five years in the Etobicoke Dolphins Hockey Association of LLGHL and one year as an assistant coach of Etobicoke in the PWHL. What separates Kuhelj from others is her genuine concern and interest in the players she recruits and comes across in the hockey industry; academically and athletically. Success to her is not simply in the players she recruits but rather their enjoyment, experienced gained and education achieved at UOIT.

The triple gym also has three electronic scoreboards, a professional quality sound system and a complete floor covering system available for non-sporting events. The large gym is also host to an elevated, 200 metre, three-lane running track.

Also part of the CRWC is an additional 13,500 sq. ft. gym. The secondary gymnasium features a curtain system to create two separate courts, two scoreboards, a media gondola and bleacher seating for 1,000 spectators.

The CRWC also includes two training rooms, a boardroom and a VIP lounge. The training rooms have multiple set ups available; from classroom, to spin classes, to a training environment. UOIT TRADITIONSGENERAL INFORMATION

Hunter the RidgebackHunter the Ridgeback was born in February 2006. Needing an identity for the Ridgebacks varsity teams, the athletic department found this dog and asked the student body to name him. After a variety of names were considered Hunter was chosen. The name Hunter represents the breed’s instincts and reputation as a hunting dog in Africa.

Hunter can be found at UOIT varsity hockey games cheering on the teams and dancing up a storm, as well as at events throughout the community. Hunter can also be seen taking part in the UOIT ‘School is Cool’ youth programs at elementary schools across the Durham Region.

Ridgebacks Nickname

The BLUE CREWThe Blue Crew has been a tradition since the first time the UOIT Ridgebacks hockey team set foot on the ice. Some of the loudest and most rowdy fans in the OUA, members of the Blue Crew can be seen on game days sporting their distinctive Blue Crew t-shirts and hard helmets.

Anyone one can be a member of the Blue Crew, all that is required is the spirit to support the Ridgebacks and an appetite to enjoy the pregame specials available to all Blue Crew members at Shagwells on the Ridge.

The Ridgeback nickname represents both the athletes and the location of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

A Ridgeback is a large and well-muscled hunting dog that is legendary for its ability and use in hunting down lions. Strong and extremely competitive by nature, the Ridgeback is also lightning quick and deftly alert while constantly paying attention to its surroundings. Known as a dominant dog with aggressive instincts, the Ridgeback moves, not only like a hunting dog, but like a dog of prey. It is strong willed and confident as well as thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities. Native to Africa, the Ridgeback is well-known for its ability to hunt large game including lions.

In addition to describing the skills and traits of UOIT athletes, the Ridgeback nickname aptly describes the majestic Oak Ridges Moraine just north of campus.

Glenn Coady (pictured) submitted the name Ridgebacks, which was selected from over 300 submissions to become the official nickname of UOIT.

FIRST PLAYOFF APPEARANCE UOIT AWARD WINNERS

The UOIT women’s hockey team reached a program high in the 2012-13 season as they made the playoffs for the first time in program history. After a growing hockey squad and competing in the OUA for five previous years, the Ridgebacks finally made it past regular season play.

The Ridgebacks posted their best numbers with a 12-16-1-2 record on the year. In a conference of 11 teams, only the top eight make it to post-season play. The Ridgebacks finished seventh in a tight point race and were paired with the nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons for their first round of playoffs. Despite a hard fought effort, the Ridgebacks were eliminated after the first round in a heart-breaking double overtime loss in their second game. Sarah Worthington scored the first ever playoff goal and Jaclyn Gibson added one as well.

“We were all devastated at the goal that was scored in overtime but we were still really proud of how hard and fast we came out of the gate in front of our home crowd,” said veteran forward Sarah Worthington. “Our fans were on a level that I have never seen before in the OUA. They deserve so much appreciation and are part of the reason why we played as well as we did; they kept the team so pumped up. Scoring the first ever playoff goal on home soil is a feeling I still get chills about; I will remember that moment for the rest of my life. After four years of being a Ridgeback, this was the team that deserved the success we had; everyone was on the same page and had the same goals.”

The women’s first ever playoff game at home was certainly a success from a fan standpoint. The team played in front of one of the largest and loudest crowds in history. Ridgeback senior and graduating goaltender Jessica Larabie made 38 saves on 41 shots as they were outshot 41-25 in the game

The Ridgebacks are already looking forward to their next playoff run.

DR. JUDY MCCAW MEMORIAL TROPHY

The Women’s Ice Hockey Championship team is presented with the Dr. Judy McCaw Trophy. Originally awarded in 1922 as the WIAU Ice Hockey Trophy, it was rededicated in 1972 by the University of Guelph in McCaw’s honour. McCaw was a feisty center forward on Guelph’s women’s hockey team. She is fondly remembered for her exceptional leadership qualities, aptitude in the classroom and her overall athletic ability. The well liked veterinarian died an untimely death in the mid 1960’s.

Vanessa Johnstone • Hockey/TennisVanessa Johnstone of the UOIT hockey and rowing teams was selected as a 2013 recipient. The event honours female student-athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports, fields of study and community involvement. For the past five years, the communications major has been a key part in UOIT’s growth as an athletic program as she was the Ridgebacks first two-sport athlete as a member of the women’s hockey and tennis program.

On the ice, Johnstone played in 105 games and scored 23 goals and 24 assists. In 2011/12, she was named the Ridgebacks women’s hockey leadership award winner. Another highlight included scoring two goals in the inaugural OUA Outdoor Classic at Ivor Wynn Stadium in Hamilton, Ont.

As a member of the tennis team, Johnstone played in the 2012 OUA championship hosted by the Ridgebacks. The UOIT tennis program reached new heights that year, earning their first points at the championship.

Academically, Johnstone is an OUA and UOIT academic award winner. As the marketing plan designer for a UOIT capstone project, she was in charge of creating a marketing plan for UOIT’s Diversity in Leadership Program. Throughout her five years at UOIT, she also attended a number of community programs involved with the UOIT cares program.

Christie Attwood (rowing), Shannon Galea (rowing and squash), Rikki Palmateer (hockey), Chrissy Tereshyn (hockey) and Jessica Bosse (rowing) are the Ridgebacks past recipients of the award.
