    O Holy Apostle Philip,

    Intercede with the merciful God

That he may grant our souls forgiveness of sins.

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory for Ever! + Slava Isusu Christu! Slava i vo Viki!

From the Fathers of the Church

    St. John Cassian

In order to understand more fully what is meant by this, we should look at the problem in thefollowing way. Gluttony tries to destroy self-control; unchastity, moderation; avarice, voluntary

poverty; anger, gentleness; and other forms of vice, their corresponding virtues. But when thevice of pride has become master of our wretched soul, it acts like some harsh tyrant who has

gained control of a great city, and destroys it completely, razing it to its foundations. The angelwho fell from heaven because of his pride bears witness to this. He had been created by God andadorned with every virtue and all wisdom, but he did not want to ascribe this to the grace of theLord. He ascribed it to his own nature and as a result regarded himself as equal to God. The

prophet rebukes this claim when he says: You have said in your heart: I will sit on a highmountain; I will place my throne upon the clouds and I will be like the Most High. Yet you are a

man, and not God (cf. Is 14:13-14). And again, another prophet says, Why do you boast of

your wickedness, O mighty man? and he continues in this same vein (Ps 52:1). Since we areaware of this we should always repeat to ourselves the words of the Apostle: Yet not I, but the

grace of God which was with me (1Cor 15:10), as well as what was said by the Lord: Without

Me you can do nothing (Jn 15:5). We should also bear in mind what the prophet said: Unlessthe Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it (Ps 127:1), and finally: It does not

depend on mans will or effort, but on Gods mercy (Rom 9:16).

    YEAR OF FAITH

THE CHURCH IS A PLACE OF HEALING Part II

The Samaritan man had compassion on the man who was beaten and robbed by the thieves. In a

similar way, Christ looks upon all people and has compassion for them because they were in

distress and scattered(Mt. 9:36).The man poured wine on the victims wounds to cleanse them,

and also oil for healing. Christ poured out His blood to cleanse us from our sins, and He pours

upon us the oil of healing. Then the Samaritan lifted up the man, and placed him on a beast of

burden. Christ lifted us up when He took up and bore the Cross and carried our sins and our

sorrow. The man was brought to an inn where he was cared for until he recovered. Christ bringsmankind into the Church. The Church community is the place in which Christ heals us by His

word and through the sacramental Mysteries. There He also strengthens us by our fellowship with

one another. (Fr. Anthony Hernandez, Office of Religous Education, Eparchy of Phoenix)
