In 2012 thousands of our girls gathered to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting. We participated in Promise Circles, sing-alongs and flash-mobs, and we began to look forward to the next century of Girl Scouts.

Members of Girl Scout Troops 21812 and 21822 decided the best way to celebrate was to visit Savannah, GA, the birthplace of Girl Scouts. Erin O’Donnell, Hailey Staunton, Kelly O’Donnell, Mairead Skelton, Megan O’Donnell and Olivia Ottenfeld knew exactly what they needed to do in order to make that trip south. They all had to sell at least 2,012 boxes of cookies.

“We set a goal, and we never gave up,” said sisters Erin, Kelly and Megan.

Through the Girl Scout Cookie program and our fall product program girls develop the “Five Skills” important in both their daily lives and their futures. Girls who participate in these unique financial literacy and entrepreneurship opportunities gain skills in money management, decision making, business ethics, people skills and goal setting.

Olivia set her 2012 cookie goal in order to take the trip she set her sights on years earlier as a Girl Scout Daisy.

“When I was a Daisy I told my mom I wanted to go to Savan-nah,” Olivia said. “Because of the money I earned from selling 2,012 Girl Scout cookies, that dream became a reality. I love seeing the world through Girl Scouting.”

Mairead found that her customer service skills helped her reach her 2012 goal. “I do what I do best by having fun and making the customer smile,” she said. “This is the secret to my success in selling Girl Scout Cookies.”

In Savannah, the girls enjoyed visiting Juliette Gordon Low’s house, a fort and a lighthouse. They also listened to ghost stories in a horse-drawn carriage, learned to kayak and saw dolphins in the ocean.

“[This is] the reason I love selling Girl Scout Cookies,” Hailey said. Together Erin, Hailey, Kelly, Mairead, Megan and Olivia sold, organized and distributed 12,078 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies.

Girls Mean Business! is an initiative designed to motivate and nurture in girls the de-sire, confidence and skills needed to lead an enterprise and become financially self-sufficient, while developing healthy self-empowerment skills. This is achieved with the proven success of Junior Achievement’s entrepreneurship and financial literacy curricula and the Girl Scouts’ success in building leaders.

Get involved in the partnership today!Volunteers can choose any of the following programs which have components of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience integrated into the information materials:

• Our Families Program (Daisies): Practical information about family members and their interdependence. Five 30-minute lessons.

• Our Communities Program (Brownies): Roles of workers in a community, the work they perform and how communities work. Five 30-minute lessons.

• JA More than Money: (Juniors): Teaches students about earning, spending, shar-ing and saving money, and businesses they can start or jobs they can perform to earn money. Six 50-minute lessons.

• It’s My Business! Program (Cadettes): Emphasizes entrepreneurship, focusing on social studies, reading and writing skills. Students use critical thinking to learn en-trepreneurial skills as they explore their career aspirations. Six 50-minute lessons.

• Success Skills Program (Seniors and Ambassadors): Provides engaging, academi-cally enriching and experiential learning sessions in work-readiness education and career perspectives. Seven 50-minute lessons.

Fall Product & Girl Scout CookiesEveryone loves Girl Scout cookies! They practically sell themselves – as long as there’s a Girl Scout standing behind the sweet treat. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is not just about cookies: it is the nation’s premier entrepreneurship program for girls. So is our fall product program. Activities help fulfill require-ments for badges featured in the Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting.

Both are an integral part of our busi-ness and economic literacy initiative, and provide finance, marketing, public speaking, and lifelong skills, along with valuable experiences that build girls’ self-confidence and help them develop their own leadership style.

Girls develop “Five Skills” when they participate in the Girl Scout Cookie and fall product program. Those skills are:• Money management• Decision making • Business ethics• People skills • Goal setting

All of the funds raised stay within the local council to benefit girls directly, through troop/group proceeds, and indirectly by subsidizing the cost of providing the Girl Scout program to every girl member.

Girl Scout troops/groups use proceeds to fund program activities they have planned such as overnight stays at camp, service projects and special trips. The remainder of the proceeds subsidizes council-wide services that provide additional benefits to girls including financial assistance, camp and facility maintenance, leadership development for adult volunteers, spe-cial initiatives in financially disadvantaged neighborhoods and other opportunities for girls.
