When you think of the month of January, do thoughts of the
New Year and a list of resolutions come to mind? There is a
lot more to January than New Year's Day and making
resolutions. There are other holidays during the month, many
famous people celebrate their birthday in January and many
historic events took place during the first month of the year.
January comes from the Latin word ianua meaning door. It is named after the god of the
doorway, Janus (Ianuarious). January is known as the door to the year and is the first
month of the year in the Gregorian calendar. For a long period of European history, the
start of the New Year occurred in March. It is one of the seven months that has thirty
one days. On average, it is the coldest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere
while in the Southern Hemisphere January is a summer month the equivalent of July.
Sometimes the Saxons called January the wolf month because hungry wolves would come
into their towns searching for food this time of year.
Garnet, the birthstone for January, signifies eternal friendship
and trust. Garnet, derived from the word granatum, means
seed, and is called so because of the gemstone's resemblance to
a pomegranate seed. References to the gemstone dates back to
3100 B.C., when the Egyptians used garnets as inlays
jewelry. Most garnets are deep red in color. However, there are
several varieties of garnets with colors ranging from pink, to
orange, brown, black and even green.
The flower for the month of January is the carnation. It is
one of the world's oldest cultivated flowers dating back to
ancient Greek and Roman times. The carnation symbolizes
love, fascination and distinction. The hidden message of the
Birth Flower, the Carnation, so favored during the Victorian
era varied according to color:
Color Red - My Heart Aches For You
Color Pink - I'll Never Forget You
Color Yellow - You Have Disappointed Me
A striped carnation conveyed the secret message – I wish I could be with you
5
Birthdays from January 1st through the 19th fall under the sign
of Capricorn. Capricorns are both ambitious and determined:
they will get there. Life is one big project for these folks, and
they adapt to this by adopting a businesslike approach to most
everything they do. Capricorns are practical as well, taking
things one step at a time and being as realistic and pragmatic as
possible. The Capricorn-born are extremely dedicated to their
goals, almost to the point of stubbornness.
January 20th through the 31st birthdays fall under the sign of Aquarius.
These folks are humanitarian, philanthropic and keenly interested in
making the world a better place. Along those lines, they'd like to make
the world work better, which is why they focus much of their energy on
our social institutions and how they work (or don't work). Aquarians are
visionaries, progressive souls who love to spend time thinking about how
things can be better. They are also quick to engage others in this
process, which is why they have so many friends and acquaintances.
January Holidays and Observances
The most well known holiday of the month is January 1st, New
Year's Day. Basically, an old man or even Father Time is the symbol
of the year that is coming to a close. And, a baby then becomes the
symbol for the New Year ahead. These serve as metaphors for
death of one calendar year and the birth of a new one.
Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday is January 15th. The federal
holiday honoring Dr. King's birthday is the third Monday in
January each year.

January President’s Article Happy New Year and may 2014 bring you and your family good health and good times. It’s always a good reminder to see the television report another snow storm in our northern lands. That’s a good part of the reason we chose Florida either full-time or as a snowbird. I have fond memories of “fun in the snow” and memories that I wish to forget regarding winter weather. It’s so much easier to turn to our busy life and activities in this warmer location. I am concluding my year as President and must applaud the work of your Board of directors and all the volunteers who helped make Lake Hammock village what it is. I thank those who have helped and those who have challenged the Board to do better. I wish the new Board much success. The Board is conducting a survey which will help guide them in providing activities as well as directing your concerns to park management. If you miss the deadline, don’t worry, your suggestions are still welcome. The legal fund committee, chaired by Lee Emery, is currently studying strategies to amend the structure of this fund. There is a possibility that a recommendation will be ready for the Annual Meeting. If so, a flyer describing the amendment will be sent to all park residents. The Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 21st at 7:00 p.m. to be able to vote, HOA dues ($15.00) have to paid by January 11, 2014. And for the new year, I leave you with this thought: “Each New Year, we have before us a
brand new book containing 365 blank pages. Let us fill them with all the forgotten things from last year – the words we forgot to say, the love we forgot to show and the charity we forgot to offer”
Peggy Toney Horton Sincerely, Dave Lennox

We spend January 1 walking through our lives,
room by room, drawing up a list of work to be
done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to
balance the list, we ought to walk through the
rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for
potential.

Every man should be born again on
the first day of January. Start with a
fresh page. Take up one hole more in
the buckle if necessary, or let down one,
according to circumstances; but on the
first of January let every man gird
himself once more, with his face to the
front, and take no interest in the things
that were and are past.
