Jinja is the second largest town in Uganda, Africa. It is the second busiest commercial center in the country, after Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city. Jinja was established in 1907. Before 1906, Jinja was a fishing village that benefited from being located on long-distance trade routes. The origin of the name “Jinja” comes from the language of the two peoples (the Baganda and the Basoga) that lived on either side of the River Nile in the area. In both languages “Jinja” means “Rock”.

GETTING THERE AND AWAY

Jinja lies along the surfaced Nairobi–Kampala road, 82km east of Kampala and 131km west of Tororo. The journey in a private vehicle takes almost two hours. On the outskirts of Jinja, the road from Kampala crosses the Owen Falls Dam, shortly after which it reaches a roundabout where a right turn leads to the town centre and a left turn to Bujagali. Regular minibus-taxis (Ush8,000) run between Jinja taxi park and Kampala’s old taxi park throughout the day. The larger and safer coaster buses (Ush5,000) run to Jinja bus park. Buses to Mbale leave the bus park between 06.00 and 08.00. Later travellers must head out to the police barracks roundabout on the Jinja bypass to catch buses travelling between Kampala and locations east. (Extracted from Bradt Guide to Uganda)

I write stories for performance to wider audiences with future prospects that include addressing the persistent lack of documentation of the rich African oral literature. I have dedicated a significant part of my time in creating works and working with organizations that bridge the cultural divide between Western and Southern/African cultures. My work also involves identifying ways of expression across cultures and other art genres; investing in training and education. I work towards increasing advocacy for performance work across borders. I am very excited to be a part of DOADOA this year!

I’ve been producing music for the last 15 years working with Grammy, Brit and Mobo award winners. Recently when working abroad in emerging creative communities in Africa and Eastern Europe, I became extremely interested in sustainable socioeconomic development from a cultural perspective. As a response SoundThread was founded as an international music production organisation, advocating for skills training and authentic production and business innovation supporting self-sustainable creative economies. We partner with likes of the British Council, Hivos, Goethe and the BBC along with various agents managers and labels to run successful projects throughout Africa and Europe, working with wonderful music and inspirational people.

MODERATORS

Born in 1984, Joel Sebunjo is an instrumen-talist and singer from Uganda. Although unassuming and gentle in his nature, Joel makes for no ordinary musician. It is in West Africa where he found amongst other local instruments the Kora; a 21-string harp built from calabash and covered with cow skin. Although Joel plays several instru-ments, he is most well known today for his performance with the Kora. He brought this western African instrument to eastern Uganda, to «marry the two cultures». Inspired by Africa and life’s virtues, Joel has produced one album: ‘The Ghanda Man Crossroads’. Available online and for sale when on tour, Joel realizes his music is cer-tainly not mainstream. Instead his music is of traditional African personality. To Joel, Africa is the Future!

The Santuri Safari is a new collaborative project that focuses on the innovative role of the DJ in promoting and sharing music in East Africa. East African DJs are radio broadcasters, club performers, cultural connectors, community repre-sentatives, and artists. They are curators for youth culture and serve as important voices for their own communities and beyond. DJs play a pivotal role in mod-ern cultural expression and can help build bridges between generations and musical styles.

Having been kickstarted at Sauti za Busara festival in February 2014, DJs,

producers, and other music industry professionals will now gather at DOAD-OA in Jinja to push for a new movement in electronic music with strong cultural identity, rooted in the East Africa region. This time the participating DJs are: DJ Bad Cat (Uganda), DJ Ivo (Uganda), DJ Rachael (Uganda), Saint Evo “The Myth” (Kenya), DJ Twendwa (Kenya) and Dunga (Kenya/Tanzania). It is with great sadness that we announce that the legend of Benga Ochieng’ Nelly (1943 - 2014) from Kenya - who was to perform at the closing night of DOADOA - died last week. The Friday 9th of May showcase evening will be a different one without him. We pass on our condolences to his family and the Ketebul Music team and wish them all strength in these difficult times.

Ochieng’ Nelly was born Nelson Ochieng Orwa in 1943 in South Nyanza. He began playing the guitar in his teenage years after being taught and inspired by the pioneering Congolese Musician Adolf Banyore.Ochieng’ got his first guitar in 1961. He travelled widely through Uganda, Congo and other African countries. He developed his own unique playing style that was later a big influence to the sound of The Ogara Boys Band, and Benga music in general. Benga music by The Ogara Boys Band and other subsequent Kenyan benga Bands, went on to influence Congolese musicians who derived from it ‘soukous,’and Zimbabwean musicians who derived from it, ‘sungura.’

Tribute to he pioneering father of Benga1943 - April 29th 2014

Nelly worked with his Congolese mentor for a while before joining The Ogara Boys Band in 1962. Together the trio started and developed a unique sound that got the name Benga, in 1963. In 1966, Nelly left Ogara Boys Band to pursue his career elsewhere. He briefly collaborated with another Benga legend, George Ramogi.Ochieng’ Nelly has produced several songs such as: Monica Abio, Ombua Akelo, Celestine Juma, and Samuel Aketch among others. His story is featured extensively in the Ketebul Music produced documentary: Retracing the Benga Rhythm.Through Ochieng’ Nelly’s music, the legend of Benga of the yester years, still lives on.

May his soul rest in peace.

Lawrence Okello Ochoko Oketch is a son to Alex Oketch a Japadhola of Abongiti-Tororo.

Okello perpetuates a more than centenary history. He is the last born son of a long lineage of Oketch’s, master singers and agile string pluckers.Okello is potentially the best percussionist and instrumentalist when it comes to Ugandan instruments He knows all the codes and secrets of most traditional Instruments. He estimates there reach, for posterity, but he makes his own music and he is the kind of artist who researches and reproduces the lost work of his illustrious ancestors. His father, Oketch, passed him this knowledge since he was a child, and transmitted to him his entire patrimony. Since then Okello has emancipated himself without ever breaking that link, renewing his instrument’s approach while refining his knowledge of the art and of the good manners of storytelling. This young man is just as firmly rooted in his family’s earth as he is opened to other’s

possibilities. In 2014, he is fructifying all the experiences he acquired on the sinuous path that leads towards artistic blossoming.
