Mission Statement

We are one with the Spirit, We are one with the Lord,

We are a renewed community of Faith

A nurturing family called to share the Lord’s message of Love, Compassion, and

Peace

From Our Priest-In-Charge

Temptation and Love My sisters and brothers, On the first Sunday of Lent, we go with Jesus into the wilderness, where Matthew’s gospel (Matthew 4:1-11) indicates that Jesus went on purpose for the sake of being tempted. After his long fast of forty days and forty nights – when Jesus is at his weakest and most vulnerable – the devil arrives to tempt him. The tempter taunts Jesus:

“Command these stones to become loaves of bread!” “Throw yourself down from the pinnacle and fly!” “Worship me and you will have power over all kingdoms of the world!”

In his classic novel, The Brothers Karamazov, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s famous character, the Grand Inquisitor, who is a 16th century Spanish cardinal during the period of the Inquisition, encounters Jesus who has returned to 16th century Seville. The Inquisitor gets a few moments alone with Jesus and is furious at Jesus for not having succumbed to the temptations in the wilderness. The Inquisitor believes that if Jesus had given in, then humans would have been given what they need: miracle (stone into bread), mystery (flying from the pinnacle), and authority (divine power explicitly governing them). The Inquisitor doesn’t have much faith in human beings; he thinks that freedom is a terrible burden and we would all be happier if, sheep-like, we were taken care of in the ways that Jesus succumbing to the temptations would have allowed (we would have been fed, “wowed,” and governed without having to think about it or work for it). Later in his novel, Dostoevsky introduces Father Zossima, a Russian Orthodox monk, who has learned how to live so that freedom and happiness are both important: we use our human freedom to direct ourselves in order to live more fully into a kind of happiness that is the consequence of knowing God deeply.

LENT 2014 Lent is a holy period of 40 days in which the church invites us to grow more fully in the knowledge and love of Christ as we remember and contemplate Jesus’ suffering and death. This can be a very fruitful time of spiritual growth, and there are many resources available to help us live more deeply into our faith. We at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Attleboro, invite you into this liturgical season of prayer and reflection, and hope for you a holy Lent.

ASH WEDNESDAY – March 5, 2014 The Imposition of Ashes and Holy Eucharist will be at 12:30PM and 6PM on Wednesday, March 5th.

LENTEN SPIRITUAL RESOURCES 1) WEEKLY BOOK GROUP: All Saints' has been invited by Grace Episcopal Church in North Attleboro to participate in its weekly Lenten book group. The group meets on Mondays in Lent (beginning March 10th) at 6:30PM for a simple supper and 7PM for a discussion of the book Blessed is She: Living Lent with Mary by Tim Perry. Here is the reading schedule:

March 10: You Have Found Favor March 17: Behold God's Slave / She Who Believed March 24: Filled with Good Things / Ponder These Things March 31: A Sword Shall Pierce Your Heart April 7: At the Foot of the Cross

2) PERSONAL SPIRITUAL PRACTICE: Our friends at the Church of the Advent, Boston, are sharing with us their Lenten booklet for parishioners, The Shape of Lent. Copies are available electronically (email Robin in the church office) or in print at the back of church. 3) SIMPLE LUNCH AND LENT REFLECTION: Sunday, March 30th, at All Saints' we'll have a simple lunch and Lenten program of prayer and reflection after church. 4) ONLINE RESOURCES: There are multiple online resources available for Lent:

a) The Society of St. John the Evangelist (the same religious order of which Bishop Tom is a member) is offering a Lenten series of daily meditations. The

series offers videos and a workbook to guide your prayer and reflection. To sign-up (it's free!), go to: http://ssje.org/ssje/lovelife/ b) Episcopal Relief and Development will be offering daily Lenten reflections that focus

on the gospel call to alleviate the suffering of hunger and thirst. To sign up: https://www.episcopalrelief.org

c) Videos For Your Soul (http://videosforyoursoul.com) will offer short videos for each of the 40 days of Lent. You can subscribe to receive the daily videos in your email.

d) Lent Madness: Lent Madness is a game (based on basketball's March Madness) that puts saints into competition with each other. It's a great and fun way to learn about the saints of our church. http://www.lentmadness.org

Bishop Calling and Election Update For the past few months, we have been praying every Sunday for the calling and election of a new Bishop Diocesan to assume the position that our current Bishop Diocesan, the Rt. Rev. M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE is leaving in September 2014. Here is an update on the process: On January 15th, the Standing Committee of the Diocese announced the five candidates for the 16th Bishop of Massachusetts. The candidates are: The Rev. Holly Antolini, Rector, St. James’s Church, Cambridge, MA; The Rev. Ronald Culmer, Rector, St. Clare’s Church, Pleasanton, CA; The Rev. Alan Gates, Rector, St. Paul’s Church, Cleveland Heights, OH; The Rev. Ledlie Laughlin, Rector, St. Peter’s Church, Philadelphia, PA; and The Rev. Sam Rodman, Project Manager for Campaign Initiatives, Episcopal Diocese of MA. In late February, the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Massachusetts announced two additional candidates: The Rev. Timothy E. Crellin, Vicar, St. Stephen’s Church, Boston; and The Rev. Canon Margaret (Mally) Ewing Lloyd, Canon to the Ordinary, Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. The additional candidates successfully submitted required signed petitions and application materials during a two-week petition period after announcement of the original slate. Both have cleared background checks. Information about the candidates is available to read in Parish Hall. For online information about the candidates, please go to: http://mabishopsearch.org/candidates_for_bishop March 14-22: “Walkabouts” with the candidates will happen at various parishes throughout the diocese. These will provide opportunities for parishioners and clergy alike to meet the candidates ask them questions, discuss your hopes and concerns, etc. Judy Little and others from All Saints’ are planning to go to the “walkabout” on March 14th at 6:30PM at St. Andrew’s Church in Wellesley. Rev. Meghan will meet us there. Other dates and places are listed online at the above website.

Loving Creator, You call us together and send us forth to be your disciples in all places. We are grateful for your leading, accompanying, and directing, as we discerned the candidates to be our next bishop. Now guide the hearts and minds of Holly, Tim, Ronald, Alan, Ledlie, Mally, and Sam, as they each discern a new call to be with us as a faithful pastor and teacher in Christ’s name. Give them courage, joy, and vision as we continue to draw closer to you. Continue to abide in us as we remain prayerfully open to the call of these candidates to serve as you lead. Make us all – candidates and people – open to your divine call, so that together our spirits may be transformed. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer for the Calling of a

Bishop Diocesan

March 23: After morning liturgy, we’ll have a parish forum at All Saints’ to discuss the candidates. April 5: At a special Diocesan Convention at the Cathedral of St. Paul, Boston, the new bishop will be elected. Canonically-resident clergy and each parish’s representatives to Diocesan Convention are eligible to vote. September 13 – Save the Date!: At Agganis Arena at Boston University, the elected candidate will be ordained to the episcopacy and immediately installed as the Bishop Diocesan. This will be a huge, festive, and exciting event for the entire diocese, and All Saints’ will definitely want to participate!

Co-Wardens’ Report Winter still holds us and so we continue to dig out and scrape off but at least when we arrive at church, we are warm!!

As we end February and look forward to the stirrings of Spring, we are busy writing grants and identifying areas within our building which we can improve and rehabilitate. One of the most obvious, sometimes frighteningly so, is our sound system. Sudden squeaks and crackles make us all jump and so it is with great hope that our request to the Case Trust/Bristol County Fund (CT/BCF) committee will allow us to purchase a new sound system that doesn’t cut off in the middle of a sermon.

In addition we also have asked the CT/BCF committee to assist us with funding for the One Family program. The outreach this program provides does such good and we hope to expand it in a way that opens our doors and hearts to many more people. Besides the larger grant funded projects, you may notice some other small ventures underway such as doors disappearing and then returning (hopefully a little better looking than when they left) and perhaps even a little scrapping and touchup painting. Please let us know your thoughts and if you possess any special talents in this regard (and may want to help). We are pleased to announce that we have signed a new rental agreement with Champion Youth and Young Champions beginning April 7th. The Champion Youth program will be offering an “Art and Illustration” class to local children in our Parish Hall. The lessons will be held on Mondays and will run for 3 hours. We will receive payment of $60 per evening. They will be responsible for set up and clean up. Children and parents will access the building by the handicap ramp. We look forward to a lengthy partnership with them.

CONFIRMATION CLASS UPDATES The Confirmation Class has been busy with field trips lately. After church on Sunday, February 16th, the Confirmands and some adult members of the parish went to Boston to attend the special gospel Vespers service to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Bishop Barbara Harris’s consecration as bishop. It was an upbeat and joy-filled service, and an excellent opportunity for our Confirmands to experience our Cathedral and meet people from across the Diocese. Before we headed to the Cathedral, we had lunch at Finagle-A-Bagel and we did a tour of Trinity Church, Boston (Copley Square), where one of the priests whom we bumped into there, the Rev. Patrick Ward, answered our questions and gave us an impromptu tour. Thank you, Rev. Patrick! Then, on Sunday, February 23th, our Confirmands went to St. Stephen’s, Boston, for the bilingual Mass. We heard readings and sang songs in English and in Spanish. It was another opportunity for our Confirmands to get to know our Church – its people, its liturgical styles, its mission and work, and its buildings – more fully.

From Our Priest-In-Charge continued from page 1 We use our freedom to choose to love, care for, and serve others, and in so doing we enjoy God. Zossima asks his fellow monks: “My brothers, what is hell? Hell is the inability to love.” Why did Jesus go, deliberately, into the wilderness for the sake of being tempted? Perhaps it was to grow in his command of his own self, his own freedom, his knowledge of God, and thus to grow in his ability and resolve to give of himself to and love others as he prepared for his ministry of healing and liberation in the world. Entering into Lent, we can reflect on freedom, happiness, temptation, and love. While a common Lenten practice is to give something up as a way of entering into Jesus’ suffering in the wilderness, perhaps the question each of us can ask ourselves is: Does what I’m self-directing myself to give up (or to take up) enhance my freedom to more fully love others? My prayer for each of you is a holy Lent in which you may enter more deeply into an understanding of the heart and mind of God made known in Jesus Christ.

In peace,

Meghan+

SPRING FAIR NEWS All Saints’ Spring Fair takes place on Saturday, April 26th from 9AM to 1PM. This year, because we’ve scheduled the Spring Fair a bit earlier than usual, we’ll hold the Fair indoors. We’ll have all our usual events: Vendors, Plants, Yvonne’s Attic, Book Room, Lunch, Bake/Coffee Shop, Raffles, and something for kids and the young at heart (we’re hoping to have the local Audubon Society come with a presentation – more info on this will be forthcoming). You can help in lots of ways. We need many hands on Fair day. Since we’ll be inside, we’ll do most of the set up on Friday, April 25th, finish up last minute things on Saturday, the 26th at 8AM before we open the doors at 9AM. And clean up starts at 1PM. We also need donations: household items such as glassware, dishes, small working appliances, baskets, jewelry, small furniture pieces, toys and games, in good, clean condition for Yvonne’s Attic (no clothing, electronics or tires please). Books, hardcover and paperback, are needed for the Book Room. Lunch donations: hot dogs, condiments, hot dog rolls, canned baked beans, chopped onions, plates, plastic cutlery, napkins, cups,12 oz. cans of soft drinks, individually bagged potato chips. Bake shop – cookies, bars, cupcakes, regular and decaf coffee, half & half, milk, sugar, hot cups. Raffles – various paper and craft items, crayons, paints, glue, to make up a craft basket for kids. Also Red Sox items to create a Red Sox basket. Liquor and wine for another raffle basket. Look for sign-up sheets in Parish Hall. Our Fairs are always fun. Please plan on joining us for a day of fellowship and friendship! Any questions? Contact Evelyn at [email protected]

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Christian Education

Our Confirmands have spent a very busy month visiting churches within our diocese and experiencing the diversity of our celebrations and traditions. They toured Trinity Church in Copley Square and then joined in the celebration at St. Paul’s Cathedral for the 25th anniversary of Bishop Barbara Harris’s ordination. Later in the month they visited St. Stephen’s in Boston’s South End neighborhood to take part in a bilingual mass. While there, the Vicar, Tim Crellin announced to the parish that he's a candidate for bishop. In all, they have enjoyed a very eventful and exciting month.

Stewardship of the Earth

“God created man in His own image, in the Image of God He created him, male and female He created them, And God blessed them; and God said to them, ‘…rule over the fish of the sea, and the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth’.”

(Genesis 1:27-28) What did God have in mind when he created us and told us to “have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over every living thing that moves upon the earth”? Did God make everything for the pleasure and comfort of humankind, to rule over only to serve our own purposes, exploit without concern for consequences? Or are we to be good stewards and servants of the earth? Since God created people in his own image, I believe he wants us to care for his creation, living creatures as well as plants and trees and the earth itself, as He would. We are to care for it like a loving parent, do what is best for it and protect it as a father or mother protects their child. God put Adam into the Garden of Eden “to cultivate it and keep it”. (Genesis 2:15). The world is our garden to cherish and keep.

This study follows others like it in which we have explored such works as The Rich and the Rest of Us by Tavis Smiley and Cornel West, and Spiritual Economics: The Principle and Process of True Prosperity, by Eric Butterworth.

Please note: The personal political, religious, and societal opinions of these authors and others whose works we explore in the future are not the focus or purpose of our study. Rather the goal of this study is to broaden the reader’s understanding of the world Jesus lived in, to share ideas, to engage our imaginations, and to gather in community. Please contact Rev. All Saints’ Episcopal Church Vestry Meeting Minutes

January 28, 2014

Present: Rev. Meghan Sweeney, Rev. Ron Tibbetts, Marian Coté, Lyn Darling, Richard DeCusati, Judy Little, Evelyn Sanford, and Barbara Boynton The meeting began at 7:00 with opening prayer led by Rev. Meghan. Minutes: Evelyn moved and Judy 2nd to accept the minutes of the December 17, 2013 meeting, as corrected. The motion carried. Stewardship Campaign Report: Judy reported that to date we have a total of 32 pledge responses and $44,354 in pledges. Financial Reports: Treasurer’s Report: Evelyn presented the Treasurer’s Report for December, the Profit & Loss statement for 2013, the monthly income/expense review, the budget vs. actual report, and the 2013 grants income vs. expenses report. Barbara moved and Judy 2nd to accept the treasurer’s reports. The motion carried. Finance Committee Report: Evelyn distributed the Proposed Budget for 2014. She then reported that the committee had decided to move $10,000 from the checking account to the Money Market account. Lyn moved to accept the transfer and Richard 2nd and the motion passed unanimously. Building and Facilities Report:

• Doors – Peter sent a bill requesting $436 for the restoration of the “eyebrow” piece above the doors. Ron suggested we take pictures of the restored “eyebrow” piece for our insurance files. After discussion, Barbara moved to pay the bill and Judy 2nd. The motion carried with Evelyn and Richard abstaining.

• Home and Commercial Insurance– Rev. Meghan and Lyn met with Home and Commercial to discuss options for upgrading our security system. It was decided to replace two motion detectors downstairs and the card reader outside of the Treasurer’s office for a cost of approximately $200. Lyn moved that we accept the security upgrades and Richard 2nd. The motion carried.

• Cobb’s Lock and Key – Lyn met with a representative from Cobb’s regarding the rekeying of the garage door. Because it is a switch key, the mechanism cannot be rekeyed and we will need a new switch plate. Lyn expects this to take place within the next week.

• Boiler Inspection – The boiler room area was inspected by Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company as part of our annual inspection. The inspector stated that all of the prior recommendations had been met and completed appropriately.

• Church Pensions Group Inspection – This group visited with Robin and left an inspection report. After reviewing it, it was decided that the form was very general and did not have any specifics that applied to our building.

Old Business: MLK Day: The event was very successful and we counted about 85 attendees. Unfortunately this event highlighted the problems we still have with our sound system. Vestry R&R Day: The vestry offered a sincere thank you to Lyn and Bill for opening their home to us treating us so royally.

One Family Report: Rev. Ron reported on the recent One Family event. Episcopal churches from Wrentham (Trinity), Bridgewater (Trinity) and Foxboro (St. Marks) participated with St. Marks providing a donation for the magician and Trinity Wrentham providing crafting supplies. Nine adults and 18 children attended. Rev. Ron suggested that he will look into communicating with New Hope and other shelters to increase attendance and awareness. Boy Scouts: Boy Scout Sunday at All Saints will take place on February 9th. Judy offered to pick up a cake to be served during refreshments. New Business: Vestry 2014: Rev. Meghan announced that the Bishop has approved the 2014 vestry. Annual Meeting: The annual meeting will take place on Sunday February 2, 2014 before the final prayer at the end of the regular church service. The agenda was discussed. Upcoming Events:

• The Confirmation Class is planning two field trips. On February 16th they will visit St. Paul’s Cathedral in Boston and on February 23rd they will visit Christ Church/Iglesia de San Juan in Hyde Park.

Rental Space/Income: Lyn reported that the Father’s Program through the Bristol County courthouse is slowly moving forward and that program materials have been ordered. Another group, Bill Metzler from Champion Youth contacted Lyn and then met with Lyn and Rev. Meghan regarding art instruction classes for young people starting in April. The parish hall would be used for three 40 minute classes beginning April 7th from 5-8pm. They agreed to pay $60/week payable monthly and expect to hold classes between 44-46 weeks per year. Rev. Meghan requested more information about their safety/CORI requirements for their staff as well as Certificates of Liability and Insurance. Judy made a motion to pursue this program once questions were answered and requirements were met. Barbara 2nd. The motion carried. Miscellaneous:

• An all parish picnic was suggested for June 22nd at the Darlings. • The VPOD schedule was circulated for sign-ups. • The Attleboro Council of Churches will be holding another fundraiser on March 22. The

cost will be $45/person. • Elevator Speech: Judy, Dana, and Rev. Meghan attended a workshop by the Hartford

Institute. Together they created a brief Statement of Identity to help parishioners explain what All Saints Episcopal truly is. The speech was edited by the vestry and Lyn made a motion to present the revised version to the parish on Sunday. Barbara 2nd and the motion carried.

Wardens: All Saints will be applying for the Green Grant again but will not need to attend the conference. We plan to ask for the maximum amount of $15,000 and use the grant for storm windows and window maintenance. Ron mentioned the windows in the vesting room specifically. All Saints will also apply for the Case Trust/Bristol County Grant. Rev. Meghan suggested that One Family could apply for a Case Trust grant and that All Saints would apply for a grant as well. These grants fund Christian outreach and so ideas were floated as to what types of outreach we want to pursue. A suggestion was made regarding meeting the needs of local homeless people. The application is due February 14th. Clergy Reports: There were no clergy reports. Additional Business: There was no additional business. Closing Prayer: Lyn closed the meeting by leading us in Prayer. The next Vestry meeting will be held on February 18th.

Respectfully submitted, Marian Coté
