Hymn: TiS 361 1. The day of resurrection! earth, tell it out abroad; the passover of gladness, the passover of God: from death to life eternal, from earth up to the sky, our Christ has brought us over with hymns of victory.

2. Our hearts be pure from evil that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of resurrection light; and listening to his greeting may hear, so calm and strong, his own ‘All hail’ and, hearing, may raise the victors’ song.

3. Now let the heav’ns be joyful and earth her song repeat, the whole world shout in triumph her living Lord to greet; let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend, for Christ the Lord has risen, our joy that has no end.

John of Damascus c.675–749 tr. John Mason Neale 1818–66 alt.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Sentence: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1.3

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison (How Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Risen Christ, whose absence leaves us paralysed, but whose presence is overwhelming: breathe on us with you abundant life; that where we cannot see we may have courage to believe

that we may be raised with you. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Acts 2.14a, 22-32 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 22 ‘You that are Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves know— 23 this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. 24 But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. 25 For David says concerning him, “I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken; 26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover, my flesh will live in hope. 27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One experience corruption. 28 You have made known to me the ways of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.” 29 ‘Fellow Israelites, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Foreseeing this, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, saying, “He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption.” 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm 16

1. I set the Lord before my eyes, and look in longing to him. Christ calls me daily to arise from fear and anxious striving. At my right hand he always moves, the path through darkened places shows, his hold is firm, consoling.

2. The one who takes the fear from death turns darkness into dawning; my spirit and my mind give birth to praises fresh each morning. All nightly fears will now depart, for hope secure within the heart is found with Christ’s appearing.

Second Reading: 1 Peter 1.1-12 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,To the exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 who have been chosen and destined by God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit to be obedient to Jesus Christ and to be sprinkled with his blood:May grace and peace be yours in abundance. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, 7 so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that was to be yours made careful search and inquiry, 11 inquiring about the person or time that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated, when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for Christ and the subsequent glory. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things that have now been announced to you through those who brought you good news by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look! Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 386

By your kingly power, O risen Lord, all that Adam lost is now restored: in your resurrection be adored.

1. Sing the joyful Easter cry, sound it to the souls in prison, shout our triumph to the sky: sing Christ risen, sing Christ risen.

2. Sing the joyful Easter cry, let all times and peoples listen: death has no more victory, sing Christ risen, sing Christ risen.

3. Death has lost and life has won; every newborn soul we christen has the Father’s child become: sing Christ risen, sing Christ risen.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 20 beginning at the 19th verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ 24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’ 26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’27 Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’28 Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ 29 Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’ 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord, PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church)

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Final Hymn: TiS 391

1. Come, God’s people, sing for joy, shout your songs of gladness, for the hope of Easter day overcomes our sadness. Come with all God’s people here, who with true affection join again to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.

2. Years before, as Moses led Israel’s sons and daughters from their bonds to exodus through the Red Sea waters: so the living Lord of life speaks through our baptism of the new life which we share with him who is risen.

3. That first Easter he arose, his disciples greeting; Christians now in every place still their Lord are meeting. Christ, who died for all the world, in his death brings healing; and his rising from the grave is God’s power revealing.

GENERAL NOTICES

High Altar Memorial Flowers: are given in Memory of Sheila Rankine from Barbara, Shirley and Margaret. Birthday: Don Watkinson (Wednesday), Melvie Holliday (Friday),

Philippa Allen (Friday). Anniversary: John & Lynne Carmichael (Thursday) This morning we welcome Rev. Harry Kerr who is our Celebrant and Preacher. Fr. Harry has had extensive experience in both the Church of Ireland and The Diocese of Melbourne, he is active in “Pax Christi”. From Fr Graham: Many of you would have been involved in Anzac commemorations over this long weekend. It is an important time for all of us for a variety of reasons. For those who have served it was a life changing experience; sadly for many in a very negative way. Many veterans who have returned from both Iraq and Afghanistan have severe post traumatic injury; as a community we will need to provide adequate support for them and their families. Over the years I have had all sorts of involvements with returned service personnel, Commemorative Services, funerals, back to’s etc. It has been a privilege to listen to their stories and listen to their hopes for a better world for their children and grandchildren. As Christians we must always look for the peaceful path, the way of reconciliation, seeking to avoid conflict, which should always be the last resort. As we continue to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, we must look at his example as the Prince of Peace, and allow that to inform our thinking and acting. Easter Blessings, Graham.
