Hymn: TiS 165

1. Praise our God, the great creator, world evolving through his might, darkness shattered by explosion, filled his world with life and light.

2. Great inventors splitting atoms energy and power extend, firing rockets, space exploring, search his light which has no end.

3. King of kings beyond our vision, none could tell what he might be; in the image of his Father Jesus came, and we can see.

4. Still he calls, for us to follow, dare to travel by his side, facing danger, find adventure, take his light to be our guide.

5. Poet, artist and composer capture colour all ablaze, words of splendour tell the story, Light of all the world we praise.

William Murray Bulman 1927– and Inga Bulman 1935– alt.

Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison (How Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Everliving God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life: give us grace to love one another, to follow in the way of his commandments, and to share his risen life; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Acts 7.55-60 55 But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 ‘Look,’ he said, ‘I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!’ 57 But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. 58 Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ 60 Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this, he died. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm 31

The response is sung first by the choir and then by the congregation. Thereafter it is sung by the congregation after each verse.

The verses are sung by the choir.

Response: (all)

Verses (sung by choir)

1. By your saving power deliver me, bend down your ear and hear me; come quickly, Lord, come quickly to my rescue. Response

2. Be a rock of refuge to save me, be a strong fortress to shield me; Lord, lead and guide me for your own name’s sake. Response

3. Set me free from the net spread to catch me, for you, O Lord, are my safety; into your hands my spirit I commit. Response

4. Faithful God, your grace has saved me; in love you saw my affliction and tended me in my deep distress. Response

Second Reading: 1 Peter 2.11-25 11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul. 12 Conduct yourselves honourably among the Gentiles, so that, though they malign you as evildoers, they may see your honourable deeds and glorify God when he comes to judge. 13 For the Lord’s sake accept the authority of every human institution, whether of the emperor as supreme, 14 or of governors, as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right. 15 For it is God’s will that by doing right you should silence the ignorance of the foolish. 16 As servants of God, live as free people, yet do not use your freedom as a pretext for evil. 17 Honour everyone. Love the family of believers. Fear God. Honour the emperor. 18 Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle but also those who are harsh. 19 For it is to your credit if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. 20 If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, where is the credit in that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God’s approval. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. 22 ‘He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.’ 23 When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 619

1. Have faith in God, my heart, trust and be unafraid; God will fulfil in every part each promise he has made.

2. Have faith in God, my mind, though oft your light burns low; God’s mercy holds a wiser plan than you can fully know.

3. Have faith in God, my soul, his cross for ever stands; and neither life nor death can pluck his children from his hands.

4. Lord Jesus, make me whole; grant me no resting place until I rest, heart, mind and soul, the captive of your grace.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 14 beginning at the 1st verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 1 ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ 5 Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ 6 Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’ 8 Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ 9 Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church and on web)

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: 457 1. The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord: she is his new creation by water and the word; from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

2. Elect from every nation yet one o’er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth: one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses with every grace endued.

3. Though with a scornful wonder the world sees her oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, ‘How long?’ and soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.

4. Through toil and tribulation and tumult of her war she waits the consummation of peace for evermore, till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blessed, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.

5. Yet she on earth has union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give to us the grace like them, the meek and lowly, in heaven to seek your face.

Samuel John Stone 1839–1900 alt.

Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.

Final Hymn: TiS 624

1. Christ be my leader by night as by day; safe through the darkness, for he is the way. Gladly I follow, my future his care, darkness is daylight when Jesus is there.

2. Christ be my teacher in age as in youth, drifting or doubting, for he is the truth. Grant me to trust him, though shifting as sand, doubt cannot daunt me; in Jesus I stand.

3. Christ be my Saviour in calm as in strife; death cannot hold me, for he is the life. Nor darkness nor doubting nor sin and its stain can touch my salvation: with Jesus I reign.

From Fr Graham: Recently I have read 3 books by the Norwegian author, Åsne Seierstad, one Grozny, the other two on Baghdad. “The Angel of Grozny” is a stunning book on the life inside Chechnya during the 1990’s and early 2000’s. She writes through the eyes of a widow who cares for war orphans – a compelling story of deep compassion and humanity in a sea of bloody and brutal savagery perpetrated against the Chechen people. Her works on Baghdad is equally compelling. They are not an easy read as they open our eyes to some of the realities of life in difficult parts of the world. Yet they are a great insight into the heights to which the human spirit can reach in difficult and dangerous circumstances. After reading such books, one appreciates more fully the good fortune we have to live in Australia with our freedoms, often taken for granted. Whatever faults we might see in our democratic system we certainly live in one of the safest places on the planet. As Christians we should work for the common good of all, both here and abroad – supporting e.g. the development work of A.B.M.A. and Anglican Overseas Aid. In our prayers we ought to remember people living under cruel regimes and give thanks for all the blessings we have. It is remarkable how often people living in dangerous places feel the warmth of the prayerful support of those who pray for them. In Christ, Fr Graham HOLY TRINITY KEW - “When 2 or 3 are gathered …….” Home Group Meetings The next Sunday Home Group will be held on Sunday 25 May 2014 between 2:00 to 4:00 pm at 54 Swinburne Avenue Hawthorn Vic 3122. GOVERNMENTS, BUDGETS AND TRUST A statement by Bishop Philip Huggins, Bishop of the Northern and Western Region of the Diocese of Melbourne and Chair of the diocesan Social Responsibilities Committee. It is extraordinary to see Governments make a principle of trust, then undermine this principle. Trust is fundamental to civilised human existence. We are not a species that functions instinctually. We rely on shared symbols, principally language, to coordinate our interactions as social beings. We have to be able to rely on each other’s words in order to function. As people of faith, trusting in God’s Word is at the heart of Christians’ lives. God’s trustworthiness is our peace. We particularly need those with power to be predictable and trustworthy. Our reliance on their words is crucial to personal and social well-being. What they say before an election shapes our vote. This is the essence of a democracy. Hence it is extraordinary, with both sides of Parliament affirming the importance of trust, that both then relativise this, pleading special circumstances – the former Labor Government over the carbon tax (and gambling reform); this Coalition Government, over budgetary matters, has broken its promises. Around the world, we see the consequences when trust in a Government collapses. Social order disintegrates, states fail and people suffer. Democracy is a precious flower needing the best of our nurturing. It is essential that those with power are trustworthy. This Government has broken the trust it was given at the election. This is a matter of huge significance. It sits alongside the consequences of cuts, which now amplify disadvantage. Our Parliament needs to recover a readiness to be trustworthy or our democracy will be threatened.
