Julie Flannery-Allen and Sarah Lavin are designers who love working with people to turn design dreams into reality. They

came up with an idea to expand their work from one-on-one projects with clients, to hosting occasional “pop-up shop” sales in the Tri-State Creamery Building downtown under the business name “Zing.” Those special events were so popular they began adding additional sale days, especially leading up

to the holidays.When Julie’s brother, Michael Flannery, came back from New

York and saw the partners’ concept, he encouraged them to take the next step and look for a permanent store front. In fact, he was so confident in the business concept, he joined them as a partner.

The team went looking for just the right spot, and found it in the former Firestone building on Minnesota Avenue. This visionary

group transformed the space from automotive repair to creative wonderland and opened in November 2012.

They describe the store as “part modern home furnishings, part whimsical gifts, part creative workshops and 100 percent design-inspired.”

The name itself is certainly an indication that this is not your ordinary home décor store.

“Zing is the feeling you get when you are doing what you love or seeing something or someone you love,” says Lavin. “We are absolutely doing what we love here, and we want to help our customers find that little ‘zing’ to create a unique space at home or to share with someone else as a gift.”

to furniture selection and lighting advice. They work with a wide array of companies in order to bring one-of-a-kind items to their design clients and to the Zing store.

If you are looking for furniture for example, you can choose from traditional or modern, rustic or retro…items like turquoise desk chairs, a white rectangular ottoman or a floral covered chair with clear acrylic legs.

Looking to fill empty space on the walls? Perhaps you’d like huge watercolors featuring farm animals, a decorative shelf shaped like the United States or an old door upcycled with working clock elements.

Planning a party? Zing has everything you need like vases for your centerpiece, party napkins, colorful paper straws, glasses, fun-shaped food picks, a fish-shaped corkscrew and even aprons!

To spruce up your kitchen and dining room, you can pick new linens, retro-look kitchen timers or salt and pepper shakers, a pad of paper placemats, pastel-colored canisters that look like old milk glass or nostalgic Edison-style light bulbs.

As you wander through the store, one minute you will see things that could have come from your grandma’s house, and then the next minute you’ll feel more like you’re shopping in a fun house.

You can go from browsing through the selection of lovely notepapers and cards to the more “grown-up” gift cards (you will have to go to Zing! to read these for yourselves!).

But, Zing does carry something for everyone. They also have a great section of books, games and project kits to encourage kids to engage in creative play.

To help bring out the creative spirit in anyone, Zing hosts a variety of “Sip & Create” Workshops that walk you through creating a Quote Canvas or a Trio of Whimsy, which uses materials like paper, yarn or buttons to create that perfect pop of whimsy for your home or to share with a friend. These workshops include all of the materials, instruction, plenty of fun socializing, and a glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage.

The workshop space also includes a working kitchen area for their cooking demonstrations.

“These are really more just like fun dinner parties!” says Flannery-Allen.

All of the events are listed on the Zing website and are promoted through Facebook.

There are new things arriving at Zing all the time, says Flannery-Allen, and that is because they always want customers to find that “just right” item.

“In design, the customer’s personality is so important,” she explains. “When you are decorating your home, you are really creating your own brand, just like a business would. And, that brand is important to people. We love being part of that creative process that helps someone infuse their personality into their home.”

Did I mention the store carries pillows, wood blocks with great quotes, seasonal décor, rings, necklaces, bangles, fashion tattoos, lamps, light fixtures, rugs, fun office supplies, gift books and funky office supplies?

Ride Empowered began as a personal challenge for owner Doris Schumacher. While completing her bachelor’s

degree, raising three children, and working as an accounting professional, she decided to take up motorcycling for what she calls some “R&R.”

It was a hobby she could also share with her husband, Adam. Previously, Doris had always just been a passenger.

“I wanted to ride with him rather than behind him,” she says.Each summer, she rode on her own more and more, and

her passion for motorcycling grew. Schumacher found herself gaining confidence and letting go of the day to day stresses and fears that were controlling many aspects of her life. With this came a strong desire to start her own business.

“I knew I wanted to do something fun, creative, and unique,” Schumacher explains. “I explored several types of businesses and franchises, then it hit me while I was shopping for a leather jacket. There are few options for women motorcyclists shopping for riding gear.”

She began seeking out people, places and organizations like the local Small Business Development Center, to help her learn about starting her own business. After six months of research, planning, and pitching her ideas to creditors, Schumacher

received the financing approval and was on her way.She calls the store’s décor “rustic but edgy.”Painting the shop and glittering the floors was a family affair,

which included faux finishing each red wall with metallic glazes. Aaric Geihl from Rubbish Reborne was called in to design and construct the furnishings.

“Aaric’s creativity and construction skills really brought a truly unique appeal to the store,” says Schumacher. “He was able to construct everything we needed using mostly recycled materials like wooden cable spools, shipping pallets, the wood off an old truck bed and other miscellaneous spare parts. My ideas and Aaric’s ideas really came together in a great way. The store feels like a second home to me.”

In an attempt to provide as much variety as possible for women riders, Schumacher began seeking out top name brands as well as smaller brands. Her goal is to have something for all riders, regardless of what they ride. And yes, she adds, she even has “something for the guys.”

“Although the store is focused on women’s wants and wishes, I also have access to several lines of men’s riding gear and apparel as well; however, it’s impossible for me to keep everything in stock. Because of this, I always welcome my guests to review my

catalogs so I can order the items they’d like.”One challenge Schumacher discovered is sizing. As many

women riders are aware, several of the top brands are sized for “younger” figures, despite the fact that the majority of women riders are mothers and grandmothers.

That fact doesn’t stop Schumacher. She continually seeks out new lines and new brands so that she has a good mix of options in fit, style and price. She recently added in several new apparel items designed for full figures.

Included in her current inventory for riding gear are leather and textile riding jackets, chaps, riding boots, helmets, gloves and protective eyewear. The store also carries a few styles of Kevlar-lined denim for riders not into chaps.

Schumacher is also introducing a new line of resin-coated canvas jackets and chaps from the Icon 1000 line. She also carries Gatorskins, which are American-made, lightweight thermals used by the Navy Seals and Coast Guard because they are warmer than wool, windproof and water-resistant.

Apparel options include t-shirts and hoodies, as well as head wraps from Design Wraps, Open Road Biker Gear, and Zan Headgear.

Fun is an important element too, says Schumacher, so the

store also has riding purses, belt bags, jewelry, belts, and cute onesies and tee-shirts for little ones.

You can choose from matching motorcycle earrings and necklaces from Steel Cowgirl Apparel, a winged angel zipper pull by Hot Leathers or handmade jewelry from local artists like Rubbish Reborn and Do-OverS! Eclectic Jewelry & Crafts by Shelleen.

Schumacher also carries a line of skin care products specifically created for women frequently exposed to the sun and outside elements.

Opening Ride Empowered has already been a great adventure for Schumacher, and she is enjoying being able to tell the story behind the store’s name.

“Empowerment is a process of gaining the ability to make a change,” she says. “That might be through education, freeing yourself of fears, standing up for yourself, or succeeding at a goal or challenge. One of the main things I advocate for is a better image of motorcyclists. I advocate for women, for education and safety, and for support of all riders and enthusiasts.”

Schumacher’s advice to everyone is simple: “Whatever you ride, ride empowered.”

For more than 75 years, Americans have been celebrating June Dairy Month.

First created in 1937 as a way to help distribute extra milk when cows started on pasture in summer months, June Dairy Month’s rich history continues today with communities, companies and people from all over the country recognizing it in a number of ways.

There have been many changes in the dairy industry in those seven decades, and the founders of June Dairy Month likely could never have imagined the variety of cheese, yogurts, and other dairy products available in today’s grocery store dairy cases. But one constant is the important role of dairy in healthy diets and lifestyles. Together, milk, cheese and yogurt deliver nine essential nutrients in a variety of tasty, affordable and convenient options.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends three daily servings of low-fat and fat-free milk and milk products for those ages nine and older. On average, Americans are currently consuming about two dairy servings a day. Adding one more serving of dairy can help fill some of America’s nutrient gap.

Dairy foods make sense when it comes to managing a family’s budget. At about 25 cents a glass, milk is a nutritional bargain. Adding milk instead of water when preparing eggs, oatmeal, soups, side dishes and baked goods is a cost-effective way to add a nutritional boost to dishes that families already enjoy.

Dairy foods are also some of the most

fresh and locally-produced options in the supermarket. On average, it takes less than 48 hours for milk to travel from the farm to the grocery store.

Dairy farm families across the country celebrate June Dairy Month with open houses, tours and special events. One South Dakota family has established its own June Dairy Month tradition with an annual Day on the Farm event. For the seventh year, the Ode family from Brandon, South Dakota, will open up their fourth generation dairy farm to the public, hosting hundreds of people for a farm tour, free meal, and children’s’ activities.

“We’re excited to open our family’s farm to anyone interested in learning more about how the dairy products they enjoy get their start,” said Doug Ode. “We’re proud of our farm’s role in providing wholesome, nutritious dairy products that help fuel a healthy lifestyle.”

The seventh annual open house at Royalwood Dairy will be held on Saturday, June 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The dairy is located at 48170 266th St., about five miles south of Brandon. Join the family for a free pancake feed and a farm tour to see how dairy farmers care for cows, protect the environment and produce a wholesome supply of milk for the dairy products we all enjoy. Children’s entertainer Phil Baker will perform at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and there will be kids make and take craft activities.

The Ode family has been involved in

dairy farming in the Brandon area for four generations. They currently milk about 260 cows and raise calves at Royalwood Dairy, which they built several years ago. They also raise crops, including corn that is fed to the cows at the dairy.

When the Davis family decided to build a new home, the move didn’t take them too far…they only had to go next

door.They had been living in a home in the southern part of Sioux

Falls, and when an opportunity came up to buy the adjacent lot, they took it.

“We weren’t even thinking about building at the time,” says Jocelyn. “We just really liked that lot.”

When they did decide to build, they took their time to plan

and collect ideas. They completed construction in October 2013.Two garages frame the house on the left and right. The left

is primarily for Jocelyn and the kids, and the right garage is for Kory. Both have their own entrances into the house, with benches and storage for things like coats, shoes, keys and kids’ school bags

The interior style is contemporary and clean, featuring greys and browns, and a mix of light wood, dark wood and metal.

The kitchen has several unique features, such as the tile wall with floating shelves that complement the opposite wall in the living room. Two narrow, rectangular windows are placed higher on the wall to let the light in yet provide a little privacy on that side of the house.

The curved island has an industrial feel with its silver metal finish that matches the metal hardware on the dark cabinets.

It’s a great space for cooking, with plenty of outlets along the back and several long, glass cylinder lights hanging above it. The black and silver stools lining the other side also make it a congregating spot when entertaining.

Two of Jocelyn’s favorite features are the built-in coffee center and the walk-in pantry, which is creatively hidden by seemingly traditional cabinet doors.

The main floor also has the laundry room just off the kitchen, Jocelyn’s office and craft room, and the master suite. Both the office and the master bedroom have doors out to a deck. A curved hall from the office leads to the master bedroom which also has the neutral-yet-warm grey and brown color scheme. Large, three-dimensional flowers hang on the wall. They look like they could be made of paper with the softness of the edges, but they are actually fabricated from metal.

Kory and Jocelyn each have their own sink and vanity in the

master bath, on opposite walls, to provide great space for moving around. The walk-in tile shower also has a small step-out space, which is another of Jocelyn’s favorite features of the house.

Well, perhaps the closet tops the list in this particular space, because she had a great deal of involvement in designing it. Built-in shelves, drawers and hanging racks form the perimeter of the closet, and that includes a floor to ceiling rack and a few extra shelves for her shoes (getting rid of shoes wasn’t an

After a workout in the sport court, the family can unwind in their theater room. You get the true movie experience here, with comfortable seating and a concessions counter along one wall, complete with a refrigerator for beverages, popcorn machine and a cabinet with a see-through front that holds the sweet treats.

Jocelyn admits that even though the main construction was completed last fall, there are still projects that are in progress.

“We know what we like, so we are just taking our time with it,” she says. “We’re making decisions with a purpose and we’ll wait on a project if needed until we know we can do it right. We love this house and plan to be here for a very long time.”

Almost Cheesecake Dessert

1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs2 tablespoons powdered sugar2 tablespoons butter, melted

Filling:4 ounces cream cheese, softened3/4 cup powdered sugar1/2 cup whipped topping1 cup cherry pie filling

In a bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, powdered sugar and butter. Press into the bottom of an 8x4 inch greased loaf pan.

Next, combine the cream cheese and powdered sugar and beat until smooth; fold in the whipped topping. Spread over the graham cracker crust and spoon the pie filling over the top. Chill for 2 hours. Serves 4-6.

Lime Fluff Dessert

1 1/2 cups crushed graham crackers1/3 cup sugar1/2 cup butter, melted

Filling: 3 ounce package lime gelatin1 cup boiling water1 1/2 packages of 8 ounce cream cheese, softened1 cup sugar1 teaspoon vanilla16 ounce carton whipped topping, thawed

Combine the first three ingredients and set aside 2 tablespoons for topping. Press the remaining crumbs into the bottom of an ungreased 9x13 inch pan and set aside. Now dissolve the gelatin and boiling water in a small bowl and cool. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the vanilla and slowly add the gelatin until combined. Fold in the topping and spoon over the crust.

Sprinkle the 2 tablespoons of crumbs over the top and over and chill for 3 hours. Serves 12-15.

Late last summer, several friends were sitting on the patio of the now-shuttered Acoustic on Sixth Street downtown.

Through the course of a couple of hours, several pitchers of sangria were shared along with a lot of laughs and old stories. As the afternoon progressed, we ordered a few appetizers, but the thing we all raved about was the sangria. And as good as the cocktails were, we began to covet the fruit that had been soaking in the wine. At the end of each glass, you were rewarded with a slice of orange or a strawberry that was made even sweeter by their marinade. It was like a cocktail and a hors d’oeuvre all in a quart-sized Mason jar.

And just the other day I saw a Bloody Mary served with a

slice of bacon along with the usual pickles, olives and celery. I’ve also seen shrimp, beef jerky and all manner of fruits and veggies adorning cocktails. Clearly, we have blurred the line between the drink and the snack, and I like this trend. I think it started innocently enough. Tropical drinks started showing up with fruit salads under their tiny umbrellas. The olives in martinis went from being stuffed with the standard pimento to garlic, jalapeños and even almonds. Many years ago, when a good friend and I discovered blue cheese stuffed olives in the martinis at the bar in the lobby of the Knickerbocker Hotel in Chicago, we thought we had found heaven. Hours later, the bartender told us he was out of blue cheese and we were forced

and artisanal garnishes, we never know what we may find accompanying our drinks. At the Sirio Ristorante in Las Vegas’ Aria hotel you can order a vodka drink called Bring Home the Bacon. And it brings more than just bacon. The drink is made with beef bouillon and is garnished with three olives; one is deep-fried and bacon-wrapped, one of the others is stuffed with prosciutto and the last olive is filled with a mixture of cream cheese and bacon. Of course at $14, it’s more than many South Dakotans would expect to pay for dinner, not just a drink. But Vegas is all about excess, right? That’s why The Seablue Restaurant at the MGM Grand has a martini made with super-premium vodka and Beluga caviar, all yours for a mere $275. How much do you tip the server when the drink cost that much?

I have turned that table and made a cocktail out of an appetizer. If you’re looking for something different, try soaking cherry tomatoes in vodka, Worchester sauce and Tabasco. After four or five days in the fridge, dust them with a little celery salt and you can eat your Bloody Mary. Or inject fresh strawberries

with a little rum and make strawberry daiquiri poppers. Nobody ever said alcohol needed to be served in a glass!

The idea of food and drink combos isn’t new. Tapas in Spain was originally small treats that were used to cover your glass of wine to keep the fruit flies out. So an entire genre of food was created to solve a simple problem. In my humble opinion, that’s a much tastier solution than the covered beer steins in Bavaria.

How far can this go? Well, a pub out in the mall, like many other bars around the country, may have taken it too far. It serves something called The Stadium. It starts with a Bloody Mary and then adds a hotdog slider, a hamburger slider and big soft pretzel with a little plastic cup of cheese. A slider is a great idea, but the pretzel and cheese really seem like overkill. Other establishments around the country have added all manner of food to their Bloody Marys, up to and including pizza. That is definitely too far.

But this gets me thinking, if I were to garnish a Manhattan with a stick of chislic, you couldn’t really call it a Manhattan any more. Perhaps we’ll need to call that a Sioux Falls. Hmmm… off to the kitchen, I’ve got some cooking to do!

I have been asked this one question so many times that I thought it deserved an entire column dedicated to answering

it. The question is, “What is the difference between Shiraz and Syrah?” The simple answer is, “Nothing.” Thanks for reading; see you next month…

Seriously, Shiraz and Syrah are the same grape; they just differ in nomenclature. Shiraz has a long and rich history, working its way to be the 6th most popular grape variety in the world, and the most commonly grown red wine grape in Australia.

In France, in 1968, there existed only 2,700 acres of Syrah vineyards, in the traditional appellations of northern Rhône. After the wines of northern Rhône were rediscovered by wine writers in the 1970s, plantings expanded considerably. This trend received an extra boost in the 1980s and 1990s, when influential wine writer Robert M. Parker, Jr. started to award very high scores, up to the “perfect” score of 100 points, to wines of some Rhône producers. The popularity of Australian Shiraz on the export market may also have played a role. In 1988, total French plantings stood at 27,000 acres, and the 1999 viticultural survey found 50,700 acres of Syrah vineyards. France thus has the world’s largest plantings of Syrah.

The Shiraz grape was introduced into Australia in 1832 by James Busby, an immigrant who brought vine clippings from Europe with him, and it is almost invariably called Shiraz. Today it is Australia’s most popular red grape, but has not always been in such favor. Many factors, including the success of brands like Lindemans, Jacob’s Creek, and Rosemount, were responsible for a dramatic expansion of plantings during the 1980s and

1990s; a similar trajectory occurred in California; however, the biggest factor in this expansion during the 1990s was a federal government tax subsidy to those planting new vineyards.

In the United States, wine produced from the grape is normally called by its French name, Syrah. However, in cases where winemakers choose to follow a New World style, similar to Penfolds Grange, they may choose to label their wines as Shiraz. Under American wine laws, either name may appear on the label. Syrah first appeared as a wine grape in California in the 1970s, where it was planted by a group of viticulturists who called themselves the “Rhône rangers.” Although most plantings of the grape are in California, there are increasing amounts of it being grown in Washington state.

Shiraz is a very vigorous growing grape. It produces large bunches of anywhere up to 130 berries per bunch. They are long and loose bunches with very good disease resistance. Shiraz does very well in cool climates and thrives in warm spring weather to produce a strikingly peppery wine. Syrah goes very well with beef and other hearty foods. It also goes well with Indian, Mexican, and other spicy foods. This wine is rich and full, and should be served from a large glass at 64˚ F.

No matter what you call it, Syrah/Shiraz is a great varietal for any occasion. Whether you need a light and fruity Shiraz from southeastern Australia for some patio wine, or an elegant Côtes du Rhône to go with a great rack of lamb, Syrah/Shiraz is a diverse and lovely wine. Carpe Vino!

The gorgeous scenery of Kentucky is home to an array things to see and do, including horse farms, distilleries, and

more. Known as the “Horse Capital of the World”, Lexington is a city not to overlook. With equestrian fascination and pride in historical heritage, the city of Lexington was once home to famous figures like legendary politician Henry Clay and the unforgettable Mary Todd Lincoln. Their classic dwellings are still maintained as impressive tourist attractions.

Just north of Lexington, the Kentucky Horse Park sits on 1200 acres and is an educational theme park and equestrian sports center offering special live shows. Housing 50 different breeds of horses, this local complex pays homage to Lexington’s source of pride and tourism. With the International Museum of the Horse, visitors can view the beautiful animal via museum exhibits and

programs, horseback and carriage rides, and special shows. The park also has a year-round, 260-site campground, a restaurant, and an excellent gift shop. The Red Mile Harness Track is the place to see harness racing, where jockeys are pulled behind horses in special two-wheeled carts. It is the second oldest harness track in the world, and has staged some of the greatest equine battles in history for over 130 years. Live races are in the fall, but visitors can watch and wager on simulcasts of races 365 days a year from around the world. In April and October, Keeneland Race Course holds horse races that attract visitors from all over. A National Historic Landmark, Keeneland was constructed in 1936 and helped to restore horse racing when it was staggering. Horse sales occur throughout the year, and from March to November onlookers can observe the champions train

for the races. The Thoroughbred Center serves as headquarters for thoroughbred training in the area, and houses approximately 800 horses and two race tracks. Most farms are closed to the public, but visitors can see working races horses up close here with tours of the stables and tracks. Spanning 240 acres, there are also two race tracks and children’s theater productions here.

In addition to the horses, Lexington is known for its fine bourbon and historical attractions. Visitors can plan a Kentucky Bourbon Trail experience with a mapped out tour of several

distilling companies in the area. Start at the Town Branch Distillery, which is named after the limestone stream that runs through Lexington. The Waveland State Historic Site was constructed by descendants of Daniel Boone, and features many classical details including ionic columns and moldings. It’s 30 seconds to several minutes of dreaded discomfort: Heat rising in your neck and face, blotchy skin and beads of

perspiration. If you’re in a business meeting, you feel self-consciously

anxious. If you were sound asleep, you’re robbed of minutes or even hours of rest. You might have just left the house feeling fresh, but now you want to head back to the shower.

The unwelcome onslaughts might happen a few times a week or several times a day. To add insult to injury, the frequency and intensity of hot flashes can rise with the temperatures during the summer months.

Hot flashes can result from other conditions, such as thyroid trouble or an infection. Or, they can be a side effect of medications. Yet 75 percent of women during the years before or after menopause – i.e., perimenopause – experience this symptom, said Janell Powell, MD, with Avera Medical Group Internal Medicine Women’s Sioux Falls.

The exact cause of hot flashes is still a mystery, but it’s

thought that changing hormone levels impact the hypothalamus – the part of the brain that regulates body temperature.

Hot flashes might begin as early as the 30s and last into the 80s. Most women have them for an average of three to six years, yet more than one-third of women report moderate to severe hot flashes for 10 years. “Generally, the earlier they start, the longer they last. There’s no reliable way to know how long they will last,” Dr. Powell said.

For some women, hot flashes are a tolerable nuisance. For others, they are a major life interruption.

“Not every woman needs treatment for hot flashes. It comes down to how it is affecting your quality of life,” Dr. Powell said. There are many ways to ease hot flashes. Often, it’s a trial-and-error process of finding what solutions will work for you.

That might include avoiding those things that make hot flashes worse: Stress, lack of exercise, smoking, a high-carb diet, caffeine and excessive alcohol. “Try to identify and avoid what triggers your hot flashes,” Dr. Powell said.

Wear light, cool clothing. Keep your environment cool, especially at night. When you feel a hot flash coming on, take slow, deep breaths. Get plenty of exercise. Lose weight if you are overweight. Try meditation. Eat a healthy diet with more fruits, vegetables, protein and fiber.

Several over-the-counter remedies and supplements are on the market, including soy and black cohosh. It’s important to realize that these remedies are not FDA-approved, and potency varies. No supplements have been scientifically proven to be safe or effective. “You just want to be careful. If you wish to try supplements, start with a low dose, and see if you’re gaining any benefit,” Dr. Powell said.

Estrogen remains the most effective medical treatment.

Yet health risks have been associated with estrogen therapy. “Women can minimize these risks by taking the lowest possible dose for the shortest period of time, to get them through the most difficult time when the symptoms are the most intense,” Dr. Powell said.

There are several non-hormonal medications that can reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes, including anti-depressants at low doses. The newest medication is Brisdelle, is the first non-hormonal drug approved by the FDA for treatment of perimenopausal symptoms. It is a low dose of the anti-depressant Paxil.

Another novel therapy is a nerve block to the neck – a common treatment for pain. This therapy is more expensive, and must be

Dr. Powell advises that women address their health in its entirety in order to feel their best at midlife. This involves not only hormonal changes, but also bone health; chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes; weight management; and lifestyle choices.

“This can make the difference between surviving and thriving at midlife,” Dr. Powell said. “Steps like more exercise, reducing stress, working to improve your sleep, and eating a better diet really do help.”

The Hutton Keinroth Room

“NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.”That is the saying, created out of metal letters, hanging on

the door to Hutton Keinroth’s room. Those are great words of encouragement for this 10-year-old fan of everything having to do with airplanes.

On the wall just inside the door is a piece of his kindergarten artwork showing a big, friendly puppy – with an airplane up in the corner.

“Almost everything he has ever drawn, no matter the

assignment, has an airplane in it,” says his mom, Piper.Navy blue, denim blue and red provide the room’s palette. The

colors show up in pillows on the dark four-poster bed, lamps and in other accessories which have a vintage feel, such as stacked boxes adorned with stars and a trio of wooden dice on the nightstand.

A colorful map of the United States hangs above Hutton’s bed, and each state’s name is written in a different style of lettering. Another framed piece of art has a large red “H” with “Hutton”

below it. Among all the colorful prints on the wall is the face of a smiling boy drawn in pencil.

The portrait was created by a few years ago by a cousin, who was just 14 at the time. Piper took the paper original to Harold’s and had the store create a canvas print. That print actually turned into several canvas pieces that were shared with other family members as gifts.

Keeping watch in the room is a family of stuffed tigers, in honor of the Harrisburg school mascot. Hanging above the tigers is a framed poster with the boy’s smiling face proclaiming “Hutton for Sheriff.”

When the Keinroths lived in Minnesota, there was an individual with the last name of Hutton who was running for local sheriff. Piper took one of the red, white and blue signs, cut out a spot for their son’s picture and then inserted the sign into a bright red frame.

The real star of the room, though, is the airplane. Or rather, the collection of airplanes.

From art on the walls and the shape of a dresser lamp to the nightlight cover and a painted stool in the corner by the closet, the airplane takes center stage.

“Pregnancy and birth are normal human processes,” says Runzel. A normal, healthy birth provides many benefits. It allows babies to successfully adapt to life outside the womb with improved overall health. It also facilitates new mothers to feel physically and emotionally well and to be better able to respond to their baby’s needs.

“Our goal is to maximize a woman’s ability to handle labor and birth without intervention. We facilitate the process.”

“We do everything within our power to give mothers the birth plan they want,” Runzel says. “But we also understand that surgical intervention or other techniques may be necessary to keep mom and baby healthy. And we may have to help a mom understand why it’s necessary to make a change.”

A Man To Celebrate

As Father’s Day is fast approaching, I cannot help but being taken back twenty years ago. A picture of summer was all

around from birds’ harmonious songs to the blankets of foliage that covered every patio. In the air was the scent of charcoals roasting favorite meats, and for my grandfather it was always steak. I adored my grandfather more than I could ever explain. He was just that special. That’s why when Father’s Day came, I always did something extra fun. One year, I made him an apple pie, and he ate it even though it was part raw and not tasty. Yet, he ate it because of the mutual fondness that we carried for each other.

Father’s Day has away held a special place in my heart because my grandfather filled those shoes for me. Even though he wasn’t my father and he married my grandmother a few years before I was born, I could not have asked for a better man to guide me through life. I loved that I too, could celebrate the man who was in the front row at my graduation, the man who eventually walked me down the aisle, and who’s name is lovingly shared with my four children. A brilliant, passionate and endearing man; with or without being a father can be a fabulous reason to celebrate Father’s Day .

Now, we have new traditions and I thoroughly enjoy helping my children celebrate their father. In the past years, we have created movie montages, purchased unlimited car washes and baked a variety of sweet cakes. This year will be no different, except for how we are celebrating. We enjoy playing outside while he stands before his smoking grill with great pride. So we are planning on surprising him with new grill tools, some flavorful pellets for his grill and new exotic rubs and spices to complement his favorite meat choice, which is ribs.

We most certainly will make his favorite cake; a strawberry

creme cake adorned with fresh organic strawberries. Prepare some if his favorite side dishes that make him feel at home; especially since he was proudly born and raised in the Midwest. Potato salad, beans, fruit salad, and sauerkraut for his famed brats. The best part is making all of his favorite foods together. Then as we prepare the food, we share stories and laugh and giggle; it’s the best! Once everything is ready, we gather together, share an open appreciation for our gifts in life, especially each other.

Father’s Day

FATHer’s FooTsTepsMaterials Needed:

Light colored construction paper, sponge or paint brush, washable

paint in a separate color for each shoe, left shoe from each child,

and Dad’s left shoe.

Instructions:

Lay your construction paper down on a surface that is flat,

then lightly paint entirely over the sole of Dad’s shoe with the

sponge or paintbrush. Place the sole of the shoe down onto the

construction paper from heel to toe, as if you were walking. Make

sure all of the edges of the sole touch the paper. Put your finger

at the corner of the paper closest to the heel and lift the shoe

from heel to toe, showing your child how to make a shoe print on

the paper. Using a different color of paint, have your child do the

same steps to the sole of their left shoe. If there is more than one

child doing this craft, be sure to have the largest shoe go first, and

print inside Dad’s shoe print as if they were literally walking in

their Father’s footsteps. Let the artwork dry, then use a marker to

write a loving message to Dad and decorate as desired.

BAllooN sTress BAllsMaterials Needed:

Balloons, Play-dough, a permanent black marker, and any

decorative ribbon or note cards you want to add.

Instructions:

Blow up a balloon, then release the air a few times to help it

stretch out a bit. Stretch open the neck of the balloon, then add

Play-dough in small pieces, pushing it down to the bottom of the

balloon each time. It is easier with two people! Fill it until the

Play-dough can not be pushed down any further, then release

the neck of the balloon and tie it off, being sure to squeeze down

any Play-dough that might be caught in the neck. Let your kids

decorate the balloon however they’d like for Dad. For example,

smiley faces or a note about how much they love him.


BesT DAD TropHyMaterials Needed:

Two paper or foam coffee cups, a small square box, masking tape,

gold chenille pipe cleaners, gold craft paint, black construction

paper, white paint pen, scissors, paintbrush, and glue.

Instructions:

Glue the bottoms of the two cups together and let dry completely.

If your small box has a lid, tape it shut by covering the entire box

with masking tape. Once the glue on the cups is dry, wrap a piece

of masking tape around the middle where the two cups meet, then

paint both of the cups and the box with gold paint. Let dry. Cut

the chenille pipe cleaner in half, then bend each piece to form a

trophy handle. Insert into each side of one of the cups to create

both trophy handles. Cut the black construction paper to fit onto

the side of the box, then write “World’s Best Dad” with a white

paint pen or white paint. Glue this to the side of the box that will

be the front of the trophy. Taking the cup that does not have the

trophy handles attached, place glue along the rim and press onto

the top of the gold box. Let the glue completely dry, then fill the

trophy with Dad’s favorite candy or whatever treat you desire.

CHIlI IN A JArMaterials Needed:

Mason jar with lid, dried beans of your choice for chili

(suggestions include kidney, black, garbanzo, navy, and black-

eyed peas), spices of your choice for chili (suggestions include

cumin and chili powder), dried onions, and ribbon for decoration.

Instructions:

Pour all of your spices in 1/4 inch layers into the bottom of your

jar. Level the powder by gently knocking on the jar after pouring

the spices in. Do this same step with different kinds of beans,

alternating with light and dark colors for a more appealing look.

Continue layering your beans until the jar is almost full, then seal

the jar with your choice of decorative ribbon or string and a tag for

Dad with instructions on how to make the delicious chili of your

choice.

We all know that having a pet in your life will help you stay healthier and live longer. Now, there are always some

periods where it is stressful to have a pet, but overall, they certainly add to our lives. Interacting as a veterinarian always brings to light the variable differences in pets and the decisions made about them.

Ownership is one of the interesting conundrums of having a pet in your family. Who came up with the idea anyway? Initiation of

Who’s Pet Is It?


pet ownership usually comes from one of the spouses or parental guilt for a child’s request. It can be a well thought out idea or in other cases, an impulse. When selecting a new friend for your family, is it about style, athleticism or personality?

It can cause quite a stir in some family dynamics if a choice is made on a single trait that only benefits one person in the family. Most often, it is the “hunting dog” that is supposed to live in an apartment. It fits for the one member, but may not be exactly what everyone else was dreaming about. The pendulum can swing the other way too, where the 4 lb. poodle is not very durable when around small children.

Timing can also play a role in who loves the pet the most. If times are stressful, they can lower your blood pressure; unless a new baby has just arrived along with a puppy to housetrain! It can be hard for the stressed or overworked family member to ever bond with the new pet. It can be just too overwhelming at times.

The recent loss of a pet can also affect how we feel about the new member of the family. For some, getting a new pet the next day is the right decision. Some of us need to be kept busy. The

new pet should never have to “replace” the deceased pet. It should be a new experience with a relationship all its own. For others, they need time to grieve. It can be difficult for them to bond.

So, now the question of who’s pet is it? I laugh because in our home, it almost like a game of tag. I did not give my wife much of a choice when we were younger. She married a Vet and his Scottie, it was a package deal. When it was time for the late night walk or someone to take them out, it apparently became my pet. I would usually abide and take care of the problem.

It somehow also can become your fault for accidents, chewed up shoes and missing food from the countertops. Our current dog Piper was my son’s acquisition with the aid of his mother. I truly love that Golden Retriever, but I relish in the times I get to say, “Hey, she is your dog!” It can become a comedic pass card for who has to get up and let her out.

Weather also seems to play a role in this drama. If it is raining out tonight, we may just find out,”Who’s pet is it?” in your home!

Mammoth: Denizen of the Ice

Mammoths entered the New World approximately 1.7 million years ago and ranged through this hemisphere until their final extinction at the

end of the Pleistocene (Ice Age) about 10,000 years ago. The mammoth was the largest land mammal that existed worldwide during the last ice-age.

This life-size sculptural representation is based on an actual specimen excavated in the White River Badlands of South Dakota at the Lange/Ferguson archeological site. In life this mammoth stood 14 feet at the front shoulder and weighed approximately 9 tons (18,000 lb.).

The sculpture has been left unpainted since mammoth fur recovered in the Soviet Union confirms that these animals had a reddish-brown coat very close to the color of rust.

This sculpture is dedicated to the memory of Helen Bernice Hannas (1910-1991), an individual of wisdom and wit whose parting has left an unfilled void.

Mammoth sculptural representationThis life-size representation of an actual mammoth specimen is located next to the Archeology Lab on the campus of Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Mammoths were the ice-age relatives of modern elephants and represented the largest land mammals to have walked the earth following the demise of the dinosaurs.
