DIVISION OF STUDENT LEARNING

1. About the EdTech Survey Conducted March/April 2014 using Survey Monkey

Explored students’ access, usage and experiences around

educational technology at CSU

Questions consistent with the 2010 EdTech Survey to enable

trend analyses

1,576 students participated

“Typical” participant was a female, under-grad, distance student

living in Australia (aligns with “typical” CSU student)

Critically: a range of measures indicate the survey was NOT

biased by students with a particular interest in technology

2. What Students WantLet’s debunk some myths...

“Students would much rather have face-to-face learning and see

online/technology-mediated learning as inferior”

Finding: 40% of internal/mixed mode students prefer online

learning above face-to-face in their on campus subjects

Finding: more than 90% of students believe that educational

technology makes learning more flexible ... in a context where

having flexibility in managing their time is important to

students

Finding: just under 80% of students report that educational

technology increases their satisfaction with learning

Educational technology is a valued part of the learning landscape

for students

2. What Students WantLet’s debunk some myths...

“Students want less technology”

Finding: distance students identified 15 technological features

or tools that are used much less frequently than they would

prefer

Finding: 84% of students would be likely or very likely to use a

learning analytics tool

Finding: 39% of students could be classified as “early

adopters” of new technology

A key challenge for us is keeping up with students’

expectations around the depth and breadth of technologies

to support their learning

2. What Students WantLet’s debunk some myths...

“Students are frustrated by the educational technologies we have

and the way we use them”

Finding: 80% of students are satisfied with the range of

technologies available for studying and communication

Finding: 75% of students believe that their lecturers are good

at using educational technology for teaching

Finding: over 85% of students report positive experiences of

Interact based on its availability, functionality and overall

experience

We’re doing good ... but need to keep building on systems and

support for how to use them to keep up with increasing

expectations

2. What Students WantAnd confirm one “myth”...

“Not all students have the same quality of internet access”

Finding: students are increasingly using wireless broadband,

3G and Smart Phones as their primary internet access (over

50% in 2014 vs 18% in 2010)

Finding: indigenous and international students are less likely

to have ADSL and more likely to use wireless broadband than

non-indigenous students

Finding: two-thirds of students a) are accessing CSU services

by mobile device and b) would like to have more services

accessible via mobile

We need to reflect the diversity of internet access and device

preferences in future educational technology developments

3. Meeting the ChallengeInteract2 a big step forward...

Interact2 offers considerable new and/or improved functionality

which aligns well with the things that students would like to see

more of

The risk: that we just offer subjects in the same old way without

taking advantage of these opportunities

3. Meeting the ChallengeMoving toward personalised learning...

We are already living in the world of “personalisation at scale”

“Personalisation at scale” in education is extremely complex

A student’s experience is comprised of “learning

moments/experiences” ... it is how we optimise these

moments/experiences for each student

We are focussing on the development of an array of analytics-

driven educational technologies that each enable particular

learning activities

Each tool developed from an understanding of what defines

quality learning for the respective activity

Each tool designed to differentiate the learning experience for

every student who uses it in order to optimise their learning within

that activity

DIVISION OF STUDENT LEARNING

3. Meeting the ChallengeMoving toward personalised learning...

Tools developed to create, capture, analyse and feedback analytics

about student learning to enable adaptation at three-levels:

I. Synchronous adaptation of the learning activity to personalise

the experience and promote deep learning

II. Adaptation in Student Learning Behaviours and

Characteristics (eg develop meta-cognitive skills, deeper learning

strategies and learner dispositions)

III. Adaptation in teaching and learning design (augmenting

evaluative data with direct measures of learning)

This is what we are calling Adaptive Learning and Teaching

The tools are already “out of the lab and into the field”

The plug: Looking to establish an Adaptive Learning and Teaching

Community of Practice for those interested in embracing these

opportunities. Contact Simon Welsh, [email protected]
