The mission of the Center for Puppetry Arts® is to touch lives through the art of puppetry.

The Center uses the art form of puppetry as a means to provide educational experiences that encourage creativity, support school-day learning, fuel holistic development, and provide accessible,

hands-on opportunities to participate in arts activities. The Center’s live puppetry performances, interactive workshops, and guided museum tours provide creative arts experiences to students

that aren’t available in classrooms while also providing teachers with opportunities to infuse the arts into their curriculum goals.

Vincent AnthonyThe Barbara and Bill Wylly Executive Director

This year has been one of the most transformative and exciting years in the history of the Center. Our mu-seum expansion is well under way. New galleries, a renovated entryway and expanded atrium are all part of the plans. Numerous other upgrades to our existing facility will enhance our patrons’ overall experience of the Center and will enable us to touch countless more lives through the power of puppetry, taking the Center to a new level locally and nationally.

Through all the exciting renovations we continue to deliver the quality programming our patrons have grown to expect over the past 35+ years. Our Museum programming alone has included seven film screen-ings, four special exhibitions, a live event—Puppetry vs. Animation Smack Down—and guided and group tours.

We produced original and award-winning work. Our production of Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat, which opened our Family Series, was the first known professional adaptation for the puppet stage of this beloved clas-sic story. The Center’s co-production with Flying Carpet Theater of New York of 1001 Nights: A Love Story About Loving Stories won rave reviews and was nominated in every category for which it was eligible for the Suzi Bass Awards, Atlanta’s theater awards. Our work in Theater for Young Audiences continued with Shake a Tale Feather with Mother Goose. We also presented an impressive array of guest artists from across the country and around the world including the Periferia Teatro de Titeres of Murcia, Spain, Canada’s Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, and the Frisch Marionettes of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Our New Directions Series for adult and teen audiences presented established, award-winning puppetry as well as engaging work by new and emerging artists. The Sandglass Theater of Putney, Vermont presented D-Generation: An Exaltation of Larks, an innovative, fascinating look into the complex, emotional world of people living with dementia. The Center also presented the restaging of an original work, Anne Frank: Within and Without, which Broadway World called “a truly beautiful re-telling of perhaps the most famous teenager account of life as a European Jew during the Holocaust,” which was adapted by Center Associate Producer Bobby Box in collaboration with the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust. We also continued our long tradition of nurturing young talent, we presented the 2014 National Puppet Slam and XPT, our Xperimental Puppetry Theater.

The Center’s Education Department continues to generate an irresistible variety of programming to engage people of all ages. From our Create-A-Puppet workshops to Discovery Days and our Explore Puppetry Series for Juniors and Adults, our Teaching Artists provide one-of-a-kind interactive experiences either at the Center with our Onsite Programming or with our an array of Outreach Offerings.

As we countdown the days to the opening of our expanded Museum, read on to learn about the rich, diverse programming your support helped us provide in 2014 and 2015. Believe me when I say, we wouldn’t be here without you.

Thank you for your support!

With gratitude-

dear friends & supporters,

center company performances

This year the Center offered audiences new, original work from the Center as well as performances from some of the best international puppet artists in the world. The Center’s Head Puppeteer, Amy Sweeney, made her debut as a writer and director with her adaptation fo Shake a Tale Feather with Mother Goose.

This Theater for the Very Young production offered company members an opportunity to expand into other creative roles as Jason Hines designed the puppets and puppeteer, composer Dolph Amick, composed and original score. With puppet companies from Canada and Spain, the Center’s commitment to showcasing the best of puppetry from all over the world was on full display this season. Periferic Teatro de Titeres of Murica, Spain presented Guyi-Guyi: The Other Ugly Duckling. This intimate, heartfelt work was al about a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, the understanding that we are more than what others see. The table-top performance used ingenuous design techniques to transform the stage during the performance and superior vocal skills to tell the story of a crocodile accidentally born into a duck family.

In August, the Mermaid Theater of Novia Scotia, Canada brought The Very Hun-gry Caterpillar and other Eric Carle Favorites to the Center’s Mainstage Theater. Mermaid Theater’s painstaking dedication to authentic adapations of Carl’s be-loved stories bring his written word and images to life as though they came directly from the page. The production is a dazzling display of choreography and precision movement. At over 30 years old, the Mermaid Theater’s expertise and commitment to excellence is the kind of programming the Center strives to bring audiences every season.

visiting artist performances

The award-winning story of Anne Frank: Within & Without returned to the Center this season with a reimagined set and additional puppets.

Directed by Mia Hirsch, this year’s cast and crew visited the GA Commision on the Holocaust and worked with the Executive Director Sally Levine about the best, most produc-tive way for the cast to approach the talbacks that took place after every performance.

XPT: Xperimental Puppetry Theater By Various Artists

xperimental puppetry theater (xpt) XPT is a long-running Center program that invites professional and emerging artists to explore and experiment by creating original puppet theater for adult audiences. Artists sub-mit their innovative ideas and, once chosen, work with other XPT participants of various ar-tistic backgrounds and talents to bring their vi-sion to life. After three intense months of col-laboration and creation, the teams present their work onstage for one weekend only. Every per-formance concludes with a talkback between the audience and the artists.

Eric Bass of the Sandglass Theater of Putney, Vermont took Center audiences into the complex and compelling worldof people living with dementia and memory loss.

Bass worked with people living with dementia in “time slip” workshops. Participants looked at pictures and were en-couraged to create stories and characters based on the pic-tures, engaging the creative parts of their brains.

Inspired by the stories from workshops, Bass created dis-tinctive characters that brought dignity to those suffering and insight into the important issue of living with memo-ry loss. Ultimately, the production was about the power of play, joy, and communication.

discovery days Select Tuesdays in September and October 2014 became “Discovery Days” at the Center for Puppetry Arts as patrons enjoyed intimate, interactive programs that highlighted puppet traditions in cultures across Africa and Asia. Activities included From Story to Stage (an interactive storytelling/puppetry experience), Puppet Creation Station (a puppet-building workshop inspired by the Center’s popular Create-A-Puppet Workshops), Discovery Cart (an interactive, mobile Museum experience bringing to life community and/or theatrical celebrations found in the cultures of focus), and Discovery Trek (a specialized tour of the Museum exhibits). Appropriate for guests of all ages, the program was tailored each day to suit the educational and artistic needs of the patrons in attendance. Though patrons of all types enjoyed Discovery Days, home school and scout groups in particular were excited by the intimate and in-depth nature of the programming and several days were SOLD OUT!

georgia health foundation grantA Georgia Health Foundation Grant provided scholarships to serve over 2,300 Georgia students from Title I, rural, and underserved schools. To deliver this programming, Georgia Partnership for TeleHealth (GPT) provided free access to their high-speed network to allow the Center to deliver live interactive puppet shows through the use of the school’s telemedicine carts. This provided a stable, high quality videoconferencing connection to deliver content from the Center’s Movin’ and Groovin’ HEALTH Series. In addition, Rollins School of Public Health at Emory created curriculum tied to Georgia educational standards and the Department of Education through Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) involved their Early Childhood Education and Health Science Pathway students in the experience!

“The instructor presented the materials in such a fun and energetic way that the students were learning without realizing it was a learning activity. Some parents have shared with their teachers that the information also rolled over into home conversations. The child friendly language made

that type of conversation happen because the students could relate to it.”

sensory-friendly programmingOn February 8, 2015, the Center was proud to offer its first Sensory-Friendly Programming day. It allowed guests with Autism Spectrum Disorder to experience a sensory-friendly performance of Rainforest Adventures, as well as sensory-adjusted Create-A-Puppet Workshops and Museum exhibits. Center staff members were trained by the Emory Autism Center in preparation for this special day.

Several alterations were employed in the theater to create a comfortable setting for guests with ASD, such as a pre-show demo, house lighting on but dimmed, consistent sound levels and lower volume of the show soundtrack, freedom for children to talk and to leave their seat if necessary, a quiet zone in the lobby, and permission for guests to bring quiet, contained snacks and beverages to enjoy during the performance. In the Create-A-Puppet Workshop rooms, there was less sensory stimulation and slightly simplified puppet designs. Museum exhibits featured brighter lighting and additional staffing.

Building on the success of and positive feedback about the February event, a second experience around Paul Bunyan and the Tall Tale Medicine Show was presented on May 3, 2015, and plans are underway to expand the initiative in coming seasons.

The Center for Puppetry Arts offers a variety of workshops and residencies to allow learners of all ages (preschool through adult) and all experience levels (from beginner to professional) to explore and enjoy the art of puppetry. Workshops for school-age children support educational standards and enhance classroom learning, and all work-shops can be customized for any lesson plan and any audience! Popular workshop offerings include Artist-in-Residence Experience, Discovering Puppetry in Other Cultures (An International Puppet Presentation), Preschool Puppetry Playshop, Corporate Puppet-and-Team Building Workshop, Puppet Factory, Puppet Invention Workshop, Puppet Manipulation 101, and Puppetry as Theatre Art.

Highlights of outreach programming in 2014-2015 include experiences for/with:- Savannah Summer Theatre Institute - Puppeteers of America’s Southeast Puppet Jamboree Regional Puppetry Festival- The Atlanta Parent Block Party- Dalton High School Drama Department- Emory University Department of French & Italian- Fernbank Museum of Natural History- The Educational Theatre Association- Miami University (OH) Department of Theatre - Johns Creek High School Drama Department- Forsyth County Public Library System- Out of Hand Theater- Roswell Cultural Arts Centerand dozens of schools, libraries, and community centers across the region.

Of special note: In the summer of 2014, the Center’s Education Department was delighted to present a series of puppetry classes at the Alpharetta Senior Center as a part of programming for a Fulton County North South Outreach Initiative grant. Sessions included Discovering Puppetry in Other Cultures, Shadow Puppet Creation, Storytelling with Rod Puppets, and Family Puppet Day. During these fun and engaging classes, the seniors learned about puppetry around the world, built different types of puppets, performed scenes inspired by photographs of

favorite memories, and shared their puppetry experiences with family members.

camp kudzuEach summer Jeff Domke, the Center’s Education Program Coordinator, is a Guest Artist at Camp Kudzu, a residential camp that provides education, recreation, and peer-networking programs for Georgia children living with Type 1 diabetes.

Domke conducts puppetry workshops on the history, construction, and manipulation of different puppet styles, techniques, and forms. Each workshop offers an opportunity for the camper to create a unique puppet that allows the camper to learn, grow, and explore through puppetry. Workshops also promote a high self esteem and a sense of being in control – important traits to encourage in campers as one of the hallmarks of diabetes and other serious illnesses is that children often feel a lack of control over their environments and lives. In the summer of 2015, Kudzu campers created parade-style puppets that were featured in camp celebrations and as the opening procession for the Camp Kudzu talent show!

volunteer & internship programsvolunteer & intern programThe Volunteers and Interns of the 2014-2015 year spread their energy and enthusiasm all over the Center to have one of the most successful years to date. During this time, 105 volunteers and 20 interns gave approximately 6,140 hours to help put together thousands of puppet kits, greet visitors, and be the support system for every department. The statistics show that volunteer participation has risen 17% from the previous year, which also means volunteers have impacted our organization by $142,816 as estimated by IndependentSector.org ($23.36 per hour).

Volunteers are the life force of the Center! Every day they illustrated a commitment beyond the hours they served to use the power of puppetry to make our community a better place. Volunteers could be seen assisting in the Create-a-Puppet Workshop, manning the information desk in the museum, or helping to seat patrons for performances. They helped out in every aspect of the Center, but beyond their everyday impact, some volunteer highlights included: earning $4,500 for education supplies by participating in the Adopt-a-Mile Marathon program, volunteering at special events such as Patron Appreciation Parties and our new sensory-friendly programming, helping to clean out and organize a badly needed storage area, the many hours spent training to give tours as a part of our Museum Docent program, a volunteer group of registrars who helped to catalog the new Henson objects, and volunteers who participated in the 2014 Halloween parade.

The Center Internship program continued to thrive this year. Performance Interns acted as understudies for the Center’s productions of Dr Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat and Rainforest Adventures. The Puppet Building, Electrics, and Performance Internships allowed the Center to encourage young artists to investigate the art of puppetry as a career. The internships available in Development, Marketing, and the Museum offered interested individuals the opportunity to see our non-profit in action while exploring their own ambitions. These educational internships continue to be a way for the Center to connect to the next generation of puppet enthusiasts and continue to support our mission.
